OODA stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act.It's a decision-making framework developed by U.S. Air Force Colonel John Boyd. It's widely used in military strategy, business, cybersecurity, and competitive environments where rapid, effective decisions under pressure are critical. The OODA loop works like this:Observe: Gather raw data and information from the environment.
Orient: Analyze and interpret the information in the context of your knowledge, experience, culture, and goals (this is the most complex step, according to Boyd).
Decide: Choose the best course of action based on your orientation.
Act: Execute the decision, then loop back to Observe (since the situation has now changed).
The goal is to cycle through the loop faster and more effectively than your opponent or competitor, getting "inside" their decision cycle to disrupt and outmaneuver them. It’s one of the most influential concepts in modern strategy—basically the original "move fast and break things" philosophy, but from a fighter pilot in the 1970s.
