It's not just the cops, it's the DAs. Elected officials, who only care about thenumber of convictionsthat they get, and nothing else. A higher number of convictions means a better sounding campaign ad at the next election cycle. Unfortunately many teenagers get caught up in this for making selfies, and it's not going to get fixed because politicians are scared to death of revising the law, because their opponents will use it against them in the next election, accusing them of being "soft on sex crimes".

 

There's no common sense anymore, just what looks good politically, and keeps these assholes in power.
