He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

Because, basically what it boils down to is I don't believe that a person that breaks into a house should be allowed to stay in the house they broke into, with the house owner on the hook for all the expenses to house them in the house they broke into, just so the people that broke the law to break into the house can be given the same "due process" a citizen receives just to delay for as long as possible their removal from the house. 3I/ATLAS and R2 SWAN Are Behaving The Same Way

November 28, 2025

Two objects in our solar system are displaying strikingly similar characteristics, and the timing has observers asking questions.

3I/ATLAS, the interstellar visitor that has been tracked for months, and R2 SWAN, an object that appeared seemingly out of nowhere, are both glowing green, both displaying sunward-facing tails, and both positioned on opposite sides of Earth at the exact same time.

R2 SWAN was discovered on September 11th, 2025, by Ukrainian astronomer Vladimir Bezugly while examining images from the SWAN instrument aboard the SOHO spacecraft.

According to reports, what made this discovery unusual was the timing. Bezugly found the object just one day before it reached its closest approach to the Sun on September 12th, at a distance of approximately 75 million kilometers, which is half the distance between Earth and the Sun.

The object had been hidden behind the Sun’s glare, sitting within 30 degrees of the Sun between August 8th and September 13th, making it too close for most telescopes to observe.

Within days of discovery, R2 SWAN’s brightness surged from magnitude 11 to 7.4, with its tail stretching an astonishing 2 degrees across space. Its apparent behavior veered away from everything seen in decades of comet tracking.

Both R2 SWAN and 3I/ATLAS display a distinctive greenish glow, which comes from diatomic carbon, also called C2, a gas that glows under sunlight.

While this is normal comet behavior, both objects have also displayed what appears to be sunward-facing tails.

According to a paper published through the Astronomers Telegram in November, R2 SWAN’s anti-tail formation resulted from larger dust particles that remain near the orbital plane and project as a sunward-pointing feature when viewed from certain angles. However, with most comets this anti-tail is an optical illusion based on viewing geometry.

According to Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, 3I/ATLAS’s sunward jet is not an optical illusion, which makes it stand out from thousands of known comets.

Geophysicist Stefan Burns noted that R2 SWAN is becoming more and more similar to 3I/ATLAS day by day, with both objects strategically positioned in what some have described as a pincer maneuver, a military term for flanking from both sides.

Per analysis from NASA’s Peter Veres, highlighted by Avi Loeb, these two objects came from completely different directions. R2 SWAN originated from the direction of the Aquarius constellation, while 3I/ATLAS arrived from Sagittarius near the galactic center.

They are two completely separate objects that happen to be in our solar system at the same time.

R2 SWAN is now fading as it moves away from the Sun and Earth, and its fragmentation means it may become even harder to observe in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, 3I/ATLAS continues its journey toward Jupiter with a closest approach to Earth coming on December 19th.

The question remains: why are we seeing so much activity in our solar system right now? Is this statistical noise, or are we finally paying attention to what has always been there?

Comet C/2025 K1 ATLAS continues to amaze us. This morning, we spotted a new fragment, with hints for a possible second one.

The image above comes from the sigma-clipping combination of 12, 60-second unfiltered exposures, remotely taken with the Celestron C14+Paramount ME+SBIG ST-10XME robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project in Manciano, Italy.

In the image above we see a new fragment just in front of the brightest component, with hints of a possible second one (or a cloud of debris) just after the latter.

We will continue monitoring this comet.

PURDY: Yeah. Every time a soldier goes out on patrol, elected leaders who put them out on - in uniform on the streets have to ask themselves, is this worth it? And I can't think of a reason why, after seeing this attack, that any elected leader would say, this is worth it. We know that if crime is an issue, that a local elected official should be putting out law enforcement officers.

There are over 100,000 federal law enforcement officers who can do this job better than the National Guard. And they should be the ones out there stopping crime, not putting our service members, especially from outside of the district, into D.C.

MARTÍNEZ: So considering, Christopher, as you just admitted, that you're wondering if it's worth it, the president also ordered 500 more troops to be deployed to D.C. I mean, would more make a difference somehow?

PURDY: No, no. Unfortunately, these troops are coming in, they're going to escalate the situation. The president only knows how to escalate in this environment. What would be helpful is if governors took a look at their forces and forces that they volunteered to go to D.C. and see, is this really the best use of my National Guard? And I'd hope that they'd reconsider this deployment and bring them back.

World’s first commercial space science satellite launched successfully

The first private space science satellite set to study the impact of flares from stars has been launched into space and is now in orbit, the company behind it has said.

Blue Skies Space, a space science data company headquartered in London, said its satellite was launched on a Space X Falcon 9 in California at 6.45pm on Friday.

The company said the satellite, which is the size of a microwave and is called Mauve, is equipped with a microscope and will observe stellar flares and exoplanets.

Blue Skies Space will share the data Mauve collects to research institutions which are part of its subscription service, including Boston and Columbia universities.

“Mauve will open a new window on stellar activity that has previously been largely hidden from view,” said Professor Giovanna Tinetti, chief scientist at Blue Skies Space.

“By observing stars in ultraviolet light, wavelengths that can’t be studied from Earth, we’ll gain a much deeper understanding of how stars behave and how their flares may impact the environment of orbiting exoplanets.

“Traditional ground-based telescopes just can’t capture this information, so a satellite like Mauve is crucial for furthering our knowledge.”

Dr Marcell Tessenyi, chief executive of Blue Skies Space, added: “Our vision is to make space science data as accessible as possible.”

Satellites capture aftermath of Ethiopian volcano's 1st eruption in recorded history

Hayli Gubbi volcano in Northern Ethiopia erupted on Sunday (Nov. 23) for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, causing havoc in villages nearby. Satellite imagery detailed billowing plumes of pale ash stretching across the arid region.

Before Sunday, the volcano's last known eruption roughly coincided with the beginning of our current Holocene Epoch, when the last ice age came to close after 2.6 million years.

No deaths have been reported from Hayli Gubbi's eruption, but villages located in the remote district of Afdera became caked in ash, impacting both homes and livestock, AP reports.

Abedella Mussa, a health official for the Afdera district, told AP that mobile medicinal services were dispatched from the Afar region to help the kebeles (neighborhoods) impacted by the eruption.

The massive clouds of ash that erupted 8.7 miles (14 km) into the sky drifted to Pakistan and Northern India, causing flight cancellations for a few days during the week, and began moving toward China.

Atalay Ayele, a seismologist and researcher at the Institute of Geophysics, Space Science and Astronomy at Addis Ababa University, told Reuters that Ethiopia is home to about 50 active volcanoes.

"At any time, these volcanoes can be active or can show manifestations of activity," Ayele said in the Reuters report.

While there were no scientific forecasts for the event, locals told Al Jazeera reporters that they had noticed a little smoke coming from Hayli Gubbi in the days leading up to the eruption.

Hayli Gubbi's eruption isn’t the first time Ethiopia has seen volcanic activity this year. Erta Ale volcano in the Afar region, known for decades of continuous volcanic activity that has created an ongoing lava lake, saw reports of a dense black cloud rising from the volcano in mid-July 2025.

Hayli Gubbi’s activity this week has reportedly ceased as of Friday (Nov. 28).

Madonna begs Pope Leo to visit Gaza 'before it’s too late'

Father Nandino Capovilla, 63, a priest in Marghera, near Venice, landed at Ben Gurion Airport on 11 August to take part in a “Pilgrimage of Justice” organised by the Catholic peace movement Pax Christi.

Pope Leo XIV gives British Crown perpetual honor and special chair at papal basilica

King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla, are preparing for a state visit to the Vatican next week that will bring the British Crown and Holy See closer than they have been since the 16th century.

Charles and Camilla will meet with Pope Leo XIV on Thursday as part of a state visit to Vatican City. The two world leaders will dialogue on two levels — as heads of sovereign states and supreme authorities within their respective religious institutions.

They will pray together in the Sistine Chapel alongside Catholic and Anglican clergy — the first such ecumenical service of its kind in over 500 years and a breakthrough that a Buckingham Palace spokesperson described as “historic.”

“It will mark a significant moment in relations between the Catholic Church and Church of England, of which His Majesty is Supreme Governor, recognising the ecumenical work they have undertaken and reflecting the Jubilee year’s theme of walking together as ‘Pilgrims of Hope,'” the spokesperson said of the trip.

“It marks a historic moment in the journey of reconciliation between our Churches,” said Archbishop Flavio Pace, the secretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity at the Vatican. “It celebrates how far we’ve come-and offers hope for the future.”

Pope Leo XIV will also be dusting off a long-dormant place of honor for the British royal within the diocese of Rome, though modified and qualified to reflect his status as supreme governor of the schismatic Church of England.

Following his visit to the Sistine Chapel and meeting with Pope Leo XIV, Charles will be escorted to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls — one of four major papal basilicas in Rome. It is the burial place of St. Paul, one of the founders of the Catholic Church alongside St. Peter.

The basilica is named for its extraterritorial status. It belongs to the Holy See but sits outside the ancient Aurelian Walls of Rome.

Papal basilicas have traditionally been associated with a royal patron. King Felipe VI of Spain is the protocanon of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, as were his predecessors. French President Emmanuel Macron is the honorary canon of the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran, a role the presidency inherited from the French monarchy.

The Benedictine monastery attached to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls once enjoyed patronage from the British Crown, dating back to seventh-century Saxon kings who provided funds to Rome for the upkeep of St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s tombs.

This relationship was ultimately shattered by the English Reformation.

VATICAN CITY (CNS)—Celebrating Christmas is important and beautiful, Pope Francis said, but he asked people to spend less on their celebrations this year and donate the savings to help the people of Ukraine.

As he has done at his general audiences since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, the pope asked pilgrims and visitors Dec. 14 to express their “closeness to the martyred Ukrainian people, persevering in fervent prayer for these brothers and sisters of ours who are suffering so much.”

“Let’s reduce the level of Christmas spending a bit; let’s have a simpler Christmas with more modest gifts. Let’s send what we save to the people of Ukraine, who are suffering so much.”

“Brothers and sisters, I tell you, they are suffering so very, very much in Ukraine,” the pope said.

“I want to draw your attention to Christmas, which is coming, and to the festivities,” he said. “It’s beautiful to celebrate Christmas and have parties, but let’s reduce the level of Christmas spending a bit; let’s have a simpler Christmas with more modest gifts.”

And, the pope said, “let’s send what we save to the people of Ukraine, who are suffering so much.”

People in the country are hungry and cold, he said.

Space Force trainees to be first to graduate in new dress uniform

A group of Space Force trainees was the first basic training class to receive the service’s new dress uniform and will wear it during a graduation ceremony next month at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Air Force Base.

The trainees were fitted for the uniforms last week at Lackland’s clothing issue in advance of the Dec. 18 ceremony, according to the 37th Training Wing, which oversees basic military training for the Space Force at the Texas Air Force base.

The uniforms feature a dark blue jacket that buttons diagonally from the Guardian’s right shoulder and a tie of the same color. It is matched with a collared shirt and a gray skirt or pants.

The Space Force, which has roughly 9,400 members, announced in September that sizing for the service’s first dress uniform would begin by the end of the year after the uniform spent about four years in development.

Since Space Force’s establishment in 2019, its members have primarily worn the Air Force’s dress uniform.

“Our service dress uniform represents the unique identity of Guardians, blending heritage with a modern design that reflects our unity and mission,” Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman said in a statement.

“From the start, Guardian feedback shaped its design and fit. I know the force will wear it with pride.”

Guardians are not yet required to order the uniform, and a mandatory wear-date is still pending, according to the service.

Once the uniform is widely issued, Space Force officials will give members one year to order the uniform and prepare for its full implementation.

The first opportunity for pre-orders went to recruiters, training instructors, December graduates of the Reserve Officer Training Corps, Honor Guard members, White House social aides and senior leaders.

Online ordering should open to all in January with delivery expected in June, the service said.
