"I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" is a post-apocalyptic short story written by American author Harlan Ellison, first published in the March 1967 issue of IF: Worlds of Science Fiction. The story won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1968 and is considered one of the most reprinted stories in the English language.
Set in a dystopian future, the narrative follows the last five humans—Ted, Benny, Gorrister, Nimdok, and Ellen—who have been kept alive for over a century by AM, a sentient supercomputer born from the fusion of global defense systems. AM, driven by hatred for humanity, subjects the survivors to endless psychological and physical torment. The story is narrated by Ted, who ultimately becomes a grotesque, immobile blob—voiceless yet eternally screaming in anguish—after killing the others to spare them further suffering.
The title, inspired by a cartoon caption from Ellison’s friend William Rotsler, encapsulates the themes of existential despair, powerlessness, and eternal suffering. Ellison uses punchcode tape symbols throughout the text representing "I think, therefore I am" ("Cogito, ergo sum"), reinforcing AM's self-awareness and philosophical torment.
