German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has filed nearly 5,000 defamation complaints over online comments, Welt am Sonntag reported on Sunday.

The newspaper said it had obtained copies of the complaints, police files, and letters from law firms representing the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The complaints date from 2021 to February 2025, when Merz was serving as a member of the Bundestag.

The angry comments that prompted investigations included insults such as “a**hole” and “filthy drunk,” and in at least one case a search of a defendant’s home was later declared unlawful by a court.

In another case, police searched the home of an elderly wheelchair-bound woman who had called Merz a “little Nazi,” and confiscated the phone she used to communicate with doctors and caregivers.

The number of complaints makes Merz “one of the most sensitive politicians” in Germany’s history, Welt am Sonntag said.

A lawyer representing one of the defendants described the investigation as “a complete overreaction of the justice system.”

Merz’s approval rating has dropped to 22%, a record low, according to a recent Forsa poll. The coalition government has struggled with the cost-of-living crisis and has been marred by bitter infighting over immigration, as well as pension and military service reforms.

Russia Stands "Shoulder To Shoulder" With Venezuela, Blasts US War Footing

Russia on Sunday issued new statements voicing deep concern over the US force posture in the southern Caribbean, warning against any possible slide toward direct military action.

The fresh Kremlin statement said Moscow is standing shoulder to shoulder with Caracas, with a fresh appeal for the Trump administration to avoid exacerbating tensions which could lead to open and unnecessary conflict.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov criticized Washington's desire to establish unconditional dominance in the region, and decried that this has become the norm for the current administration.

He warned that "tensions are not easing" and "escalation continues" off Latin America, also after the last few months stretching back to September have seen a string of nearly two dozen deadly US attacks on alleged drug smuggling boats near Venezuela.

"This is primarily due to the desire to assert the unquestioning dominance of the United States in the region, this is a trademark of the Trump administration," Ryabkov explained.

According to more of his statement:

"We express our solidarity with Venezuela, with whom we recently signed a strategic partnership and cooperation agreement," the deputy foreign minister noted.

"We support Venezuela, as it supports us, in many areas. In this hour of trial, we stand shoulder to shoulder with Caracas and the Venezuelan leadership. We hope that the Trump administration will refrain from further escalating the situation toward a full-scale conflict. We urge it to do so."

The Kremlin in these remarks might also have in mind the just published (on Friday) US National Security Strategy and its significant refocus of America's priorities on the Western Hemisphere.

The document clearly establishes this as the top priority, saying that the US will now "assert and enforce a 'Trump Corollary' to the Monroe Doctrine."

The students were seen pushing and slapping him on the back before throwing beer over him, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The distraught boy later told police he was verbally abused and called a 'fat f***' before he managed to escape.

His mother, Trish, said he is still battered and bruised two days after he was lured to the park for a 'coming of age' ritual.

Hotline claims to have identified more than 200 alleged historical child abuse offenders in secretive Christian sect

Jillian Hishon spent 38 years of her life in a secretive sect before she was silenced and removed for marrying an outsider.

Very little is known about the group, which goes by various names including The Two by Twos or The Church With No Name.

But with an intimate knowledge of the inner workings of this fundamentalist Christian sect that operates without formal governance, Ms Hishon has devoted hundreds of hours listening to an estimated 280 victims of historical child sexual abuse from within the church she grew up in.

Her hotline, The Brave Truth, was set up in 2023 and claims to have identified over 200 alleged perpetrators across Australia and New Zealand.

Former members, including Ms Hishon who was expelled around 2012, say the scale of historical abuse is staggering.

"It's a relatively small church. In Australia, probably only about 7,500 members … so to have over 200 [alleged perpetrators] reported here that's a big number," Ms Hishon said.

In a statement, the Two by Two Church said their "fellowship is committed to the safety and wellbeing of every child, young person and vulnerable person".

It also said it would "listen to and believe survivors and take all allegations seriously".

But Ms Hishon said decades of allegations had been historically buried, allowing alleged abusers to move freely between households.

"In the last couple of years, we say this has really snowballed and it's all come out … whether ministers have known about it or not, it's been covered up in a lot of cases," she said.

A disturbed science teacher allegedly groomed an underage student through secret Google Docs messages before engaging in sexual acts with her on and off campus.

Elias Gordon Farley, a 26-year-old teacher at Donna Klein Jewish Academy in Palm Beach County, was arrested amid appalling allegations of a sexual relationship with a student.

The grimacing teacher was exposed on November 14, after the student showed an art teacher bruises and bite marks she said came from him, according to the affidavit obtained by the Daily Mail.

In it, the teen, whose name and age were not disclosed, described their relationship as a typical 'teacher-student dynamic' until it snowballed over the summer.

A Google Doc was shared between the two where they allegedly exchanged secret messages, and investigators later revealed it contained 'explicit details' about their acts and meetings.

California Sheriff Chad Bianco Says It Is ‘Time to End’ State Income Tax

Riverside County Sheriff and California Republican gubernatorial candidate Chad Bianco announced on Saturday that it is “time to end” the state’s income tax.

“It’s time to end state income tax,” Bianco wrote in a post on X. “Tax payers shouldn’t be carrying the burden for Sacramento’s special interests.”

Bianco’s website for governor of California states that some of his priorities are to “cut taxes on working families and businesses,” “stop the over-regulation of California’s economy to support job growth and business,” and to “unleash California’s energy resources to lower the price of gas and utilities.”

Bianco’s website states:

California is the most expensive state to live in America, which explains why from July 2020 and July 2023 we have lost 412,000 people to other states. It is no surprise given residents must deal with the highest income tax and most regulations of any other state. Decades of failed policies, over taxation, and regulations have are causing Californians to leave for greener pastures.

When announcing in February that he was jumping into the California gubernatorial race to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), who is term-limited, Bianco said the state’s residents deserve better than to have to deal with high taxes, increased crime, and “tent encampments in every major city.”

“We have to be brutally honest during this campaign, and that includes those in the media,” Bianco said at the time. “It is only our Democrat elected officials who are responsible for the decline of California. What is it that they have given us? Rampant crime, higher taxes, the highest cost of living in our nation, tent encampments in every major city, more fentanyl deaths, catastrophic fires, a broken homeowners’ insurance market, and people across our state are struggling to afford groceries and gas. Californians deserve better.”

On the Republican side in California’s gubernatorial race, Bianco is facing opponent former Fox News host Steve Hilton. On the Democrat side, former Rep. Russia Cancels military agreements with Portugal, France and Canada

Portugal and France both support EU proposals to use frozen Russian assets to provide loans to Ukraine amid Moscow's all-out war, now well into its fourth year.

Russia terminated decades-old military cooperation agreements with Portugal, France and Canada by decree published on Friday, according to Russian state media.

The three agreements signed between 1989 and 2000 are no longer strategically relevant, Russian authorities said.

The agreements were signed during a period of improved relations between Russia and the West following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The Canada agreement came just weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 — which effectively signalled the end of the Cold War — when Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev attempted to mend bridges with Western nations.
