Highlights
• Epidemiological studies have indicated the association of PM2.5 exposure with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. • Exposure to PM2.5 induces oxidative stress, inflammation, and immune responses in humans. • PM2.5-bound chemical components exhibit greater toxicity and immunotoxicological effects. • Noncoding RNA (ncRNAs) may play a role in PM2.5-related effects through oxidative stress and gene disruption within cells. • Potential biomarkers following PM2.5 exposure include IL-4, IL-6, IL-13, TNF-α, IL-17, and IFN-γ.
