NPR CEO Katherine Maher reportedly refused to quit her job despite calls from one of the outlet’s biggest backers as President Trump and Congress denied it funding over alleged biased coverage.

Patricia Harrison, CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, told Maher she should resign earlier this year, the New York Times reported in a flattering profile of the public radio boss.

The exchange came as Congress was gearing up to claw back a whopping $1.1 billion in funding from the public media system, which includes NPR and the CPB.

Trump argued that the nonprofit CPB’s support of left-leaning outlets like NPR violated its mandate to stay apolitical.

On a call in the spring, Harrison asked Maher if she would be willing to say anything to members of Congress or the press to “acknowledge concerns from listeners who viewed NPR’s reporting as biased,” sources told the Times.

Maher dismissed the notion of slanted coverage. Months later, Harrison told her she should quit her position “for the good of public media,” the Times reported.

Maher, who refused to quit, had a track record of rejecting claims of bias before.

The former head of Wikipedia parent Wikimedia grabbed the reins as NPR’s CEO in March 2024.

She faced backlash over past comments she made including calling Trump “racist” and blasting Hillary Clinton for using the terms “boy” and “girl” — saying the pol was “erasing language for non-binary people.”

Maher also condemned claims of bias at NPR made by longtime staffer Uri Berliner, who penned an essay on website the Free Press called “I’ve Been at NPR for 25 years. Here’s How We Lost America’s Trust.”

Berliner, a Peabody Award-winning journalist, called out journalistic blind spots around major news events, including the origins of COVID, the war in Gaza and the Hunter Biden laptop.

He also said he’d counted 87 registered Democrats and no Republicans in editorial roles and presented the findings to his colleagues at a May 2021 all-hands editorial staff meeting.

Tuesday on MS NOW’s “All In,” Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) said if he became governor in California, he would charge ICE agents and take away their driver’s licenses if they commit crimes.

Host Jason Johnson said, “What would you do if you are able to be elected as governor of California? Yes, we’ve seen over just not just one year of this new regime, that it’s the states that tend to be the strongest pushback. It’s the governors of Illinois, it’s the governor of Michigan, governor of Virginia, Maryland, everything else like that. What will you bring to the table? Because California, just by size and GDP alone, is sort of the tip of the spear. What would you bring to the table as a governor of California?”

Swalwell said, “Well, you have immense powers as governor of California and your responsibility to protect the most vulnerable in the state. So if the president is going to send ICE agents to chase immigrants through the fields where they work, what I’m going to do is make sure that they take off their masks and show their faces, that they show their identification. And if they commit crimes that they’re going to be charged with crimes, if it’s falsely imprisoning people, if it’s kidnapping, if it’s assault battery, they’re going to be held accountable. I also think if the governor has the ability to issue driver’s licenses to people in California, if you’re going to wear a mask and not identify yourself, you’re not going to be eligible to drive a vehicle in California. There’s a lot you can do, but most importantly, you have to go on offense. Otherwise, the most vulnerable in our community will always be on defense.”

Virginia Man Detained, Charged with Sending Alleged Death Threats to Grenell

A Virginia man was detained and charged with threatening to kill former Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, who serves as the president of the Trump Kennedy Center, according to a press release.

In a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, it was revealed that Scott Allen Bolger, 33, was “charged by criminal complaint with transmitting threats in interstate commerce and making false statements.”

Through the use of Google Voice, on Dec. 23, Bolger sent “a message to a federal employee” threatening “to kill the employee,” according to court documents.

Bolger also “falsely identified himself as Brian Black” to “federal task force officers” who arrived at his home to question him, according to the press release.

Per the press release:

According to court documents, on Dec. 23, Scott Allen Bolger, 33, allegedly used Google Voice, which allows a user to text message others using a phone number other than the user’s primary phone number, to send a message to a federal employee. In the message, Bolger allegedly threatened to kill the employee.

While the federal employee was unnamed in the press release, officials from the Department of Justice (DOJ) “identified Grenell” as the employee whom Bolger messaged, according to Fox News.
