President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed Venezuela, Gaza, and issues of trade and defense industry in a telephone conversation with US leader Donald Trump.
"The leaders discussed bilateral relations in the political sphere between Turkey and the United States, cooperation in the defense industry, the steps required to be taken in order to reach the target volume of trade between the two countries, as well as regional and global issues, including the situation in Gaza and Venezuela," the office of the Turkish president said after the conversation.

Switzerland freezes assets of Venezuela’s Maduro and his inner circle
The measure is said to ensure that "any illicitly acquired assets cannot be transferred out of Switzerland in the current situation", the Swiss government said
Switzerland has frozen all assets belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and individuals from his close circle, the Swiss government said.
"The Federal Council decided to freeze any assets held in Switzerland by Nicolas Maduro and other persons associated with him with immediate effect," the statement reads.
The measure is said to ensure that "any illicitly acquired assets cannot be transferred out of Switzerland in the current situation." The Federal Council added that the asset freeze targets individuals who have not previously been sanctioned in Switzerland and will not affect members of the current Venezuelan government. "The asset freeze is in addition to the sanctions against Venezuela that have been in place since 2018 under the Embargo Act," the statement says.

Colombian president vows to ‘take up arms’ if US attacks
President Donald Trump has not ruled out a military operation against Colombia, saying that it “sounds good”
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has vowed to “take up arms” in the event of a US attack.
His statement followed multiple threats from President Donald Trump in the wake of Saturday’s US attack on Venezuela and the abduction of its leader, Nicolas Maduro.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, the US president accused Petro of orchestrating the cocaine trade and hinted that he could soon also be removed. When asked if the US would launch a military operation against Colombia, Trump replied: “sounds good to me.”
In an X post on Monday, Petro promised to resist.
“Although I have not been a military man, I know about war and clandestinity. I swore not to touch a weapon again since the 1989 Peace Pact, but for the Homeland I will reluctantly take up arms again,” he said.
Prior to being elected Colombia’s first left-wing president in 2022, Petro was part of the M-19 communist guerrilla group, which agreed to lay down arms and join mainstream Colombian politics in the late 1980s.
According to Petro, he has cracked down on the cocaine trade in the country during his term.
“I stopped the growth of coca leaf crops and began a great voluntary crop substitution plan by the coca-growing peasant,” he said, arguing that his airstrikes against local cartels needed surgical precision to avoid killing children and peasants, so as not to swell the ranks of Colombian insurgency groups.
After Trump’s drug-trafficking accusations and the threat of military intervention, Petro said he demanded that every military officer “who prefers the flag of the US to the flag of Colombia” resign.
Following condemnation by Colombia and Cuba of the US attack on Venezuela, Trump also made a veiled threat against the Caribbean island, claiming that it “is ready to fall.”
Moscow has condemned the US “armed aggression” against Venezuela, and demanded that Washington release the country’s legally elected president and his wife.

“The Saturday morning arson attack on critical electricity infrastructure in southwest Berlin cut power to nearly 50,000 homes and businesses, and renewed scrutiny of a long-running sabotage campaign by the left-wing ‘Vulkangruppe’.
The group claimed responsibility for the fire, which destroyed several high-voltage cables near the Lichterfelde heat and power station and triggered one of the most severe blackouts the capital has experienced in years.”
In a lengthy statement circulated online and called credible by police, the Vulkangruppe said it had deliberately targeted affluent neighborhoods, to "cut the juice to the ruling class."
The group framed the attack as an act of protest against fossil fuel energy use and the growing power demand created by AI data centers, which it said had accelerated climate change and expanded mass surveillance. The statement included an apology to less wealthy residents caught up in the blackout but it expressed no sympathy for wealthy homeowners left without electricity.
The impact of the attack quickly spread beyond the areas the group said it had intended to target. Hospitals, care homes for the elderly and high-rise building residents who rely on elevators were impacted. Cell phone networks failed in some districts and commuter rail services were disrupted. Police used loudspeakers mounted on patrol cars to inform residents, and some schools delayed reopening after the Christmas and New Year's holiday break.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the arson attack as an "absolutely unacceptable" act of terrorism. He warned that assaults on energy infrastructure endangered lives and placed enormous strain on the city's emergency services.

The two largest US newspapers learned in advance of the secret US raid to abduct Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, but chose not to publish what they knew to avoid endangering US troops, Semafor reported on 4 January, citing two people familiar with the matter.
Despite their hostility toward US President Donald Trump regarding domestic issues, the New York Times (NYT) and Washington Post cooperated with his administration ahead of the operation to attack Venezuela.
US forces deployed more than 150 aircraft to eliminate air defenses, clearing the way for helicopters to insert troops who then moved on to President Maduro’s location.
After Maduro and his wife were abducted, President Trump and top administration officials praised the operation, citing both the lack of US casualties and the total secrecy surrounding it, including from the media.
"The coordination, the stealth, the precision, the very long arm of American justice - all on display in the middle of the night," Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said.
Trump approved the assault at 10:46 pm Friday. Though aware of the decision, the NYT and Washington Post waited several hours before reporting it because the White House had warned that doing so would expose US troops performing the operation to danger.
However, the decision also showed disregard for the lives of Venezuelans.
US airstrikes accompanying the commando operation killed 40 people, including civilians and military personnel, a senior Venezuelan official told the NYT on Saturday.
One strike targeted a three-story civilian apartment complex in Catia La Mar, a poor coastal area just west of the Caracas airport, killing an 80-year-old woman, Rosa González, and seriously wounding a second person.

A long-serving Queensland Police employee has been granted bail after allegedly posting highly offensive and antisemitic messages online, including comments made in response to the Bondi massacre.
A Queensland Police Service employee with 25 years’ service has been accused of posting a series of antisemitic and offensive messages online, including comments allegedly made in response to material connected to the Bondi Beach terror attack.
Muamer Nukic (50), appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday after being arrested earlier the same day.
He faces 41 counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence and has not entered plea.
The court heard the alleged posts were made across several social media platforms over a period of almost two years, with police claiming some messages were supportive of acts of violence, including the Bondi massacre.
One alleged post was made in response to a Threads user discussing Islamic extremism alongside an image of Matilda, the 10-year-old girl killed in the Bondi attack.
Prosecutors allege Nukic responded: “Zionist scm f*k off!!!”.
Another alleged comment was directed at an image showing a before-and-after photograph of what appeared to be a female Israeli Defence Force soldier who had lost her legs.
Nukic is accused of replying back to the post: “Happy birthday legless b****” followed by a tongue-out emoji.
