“There are organizations that say they care about their workers,” says Clark Musto, “but Johnson & Johnson didn’t just say it. They proved it.”

 

For a workplace to be truly diverse and inclusive, it should not only attract talent from many different backgrounds, but also work to retain that talent and help make them feel they belong.

 

According to Musto, who transitioned from female to male, Johnson & Johnson not only talks the talk but walks the walk when it comes to supporting its transgender employees.

 

For Musto, who works for Janssen Pharmaceuticals, part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, that meant not only being protected by a harassment-free workplace policy, but also benefiting from a documented company process for helping employees transition that encompasses support from mentors across the company.

 

For International Transgender Day of Visibility, we sat down with Musto to hear more about his brave story of deciding to come out as transgender.

 

‘You have the backing of the entire company’

 

At my last job, I was co-lead of the LGBTQ group. The company was quite progressive, but their insurance policy followed a common gatekeeping policy: If you want to move forward with gender-affirming surgery—for me, it was getting my breasts removed, known as top surgery—you needed to undergo at least one year or more of hormone replacement therapy first for the procedure to be covered by insurance.

 

This tends to deter people from going through with the surgery. Gender is a spectrum and identities include more than just being male or female, so there are many people in the community who do not identify in the gender binary, and who do not feel that hormone therapy is right for them.

 

The requirement certainly deterred me. I wasn’t ready for hormone replacement therapy, but I also couldn’t see myself living with that part of my body anymore.

 

Then, in February 2017, I was introduced to Johnson & Johnson through an LGBT-specific recruiting event called Lesbians Who Tech. I talked to an openly gay gentleman from the company’s HR team who told me about all of the company’s great LGBTQIA+ benefits—including fertility, adoption and surrogacy assistance for same-sex couples and transition policies—and encouraged me to apply if I found a position I felt qualified for.

 

Sure enough, I applied for a clinical research manager position, and got the job!

 

When I called my new health insurance company as a Johnson & Johnson employee, they told me that being on hormones for a year before surgery wasn’t a requirement—which meant that I could have hormone treatment and top surgery at the same time, so I could get everything done at once. I hung up the phone and thought: Wow, this can actually happen for me!

Since the introduction of the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012 as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2013, there has been a surprising amount of attention to the fear of the American public being subjected to propaganda. The Act would remove the restriction currently in place that bans the dissemination of government material produced for overseas consumption from being made available to the American public. Let’s ask a lot of questions.

 

For a moment, let’s assume this is true and assert that the American public will be subjected to the same “propaganda” as issued by the U.S. Government overseas. What is it exactly that we are worried about? Are we to assume that the messages we issue overseas are somehow unfit for the American public? If so, why is that? Is the information untrue? If it’s untrue, then it’s disinformation, and I don’t want that broadcast in my name—so let’s fix it.

 

Edward R. Murrow, the often-quoted father-figure of American public diplomacy and first head of the U.S. Information Agency, remarked on what makes good propaganda:

 

…truth is the best propaganda and lies are the worst. To be persuasive we must be believable; to be believable we must be credible; to be credible we must be truthful. It is as simple as that.

 

Now, let’s assume the American public will be able to access all the information the United States publishes for foreign consumption online. Actually, we don’t need to assume this, because it is already true. Practically any Google search of an international or foreign policy issue generates results from Voice of America, which technically, under Smith-Mundt, Americans aren’t legally allowed to receive—it’s essentially legally codified censorship. In fact, I would argue that it’s a violation of the First Amendment, as it restricts freedom of the press. Foreigners can view it, but Americans aren’t allowed to? Smith-Mundt is outdated, ineffective, disabling, and arguably unconstitutional.

 

Making information readily available, propaganda or not, subjects it to more scrutiny and analysis directly by the people who are paying for it in the first place. It creates more transparency and accountability, and eliminates the domestic media as an intermediary. Should we rely completely on private media to decide what government-produced information we should or should not be issued? Why should we let CNN or Fox News decide for us? Doesn’t putting the information out there for public viewing make the private news we rely on more responsible for debating it? Shouldn’t we be able to know what we are broadcasting or publishing overseas?

 

So again, let’s assume that our foreign “propaganda” will be made available for domestic consumption. In today’s increasingly skeptical, informed, and interconnected society, who’s to say that such propaganda could be effectively used for nefarious purposes? This material should be available for scrutiny.

  1. Among the wonderful technological discoveries which men of talent, especially in the present era, have made with God's help, the Church welcomes and promotes with special interest those which have a most direct relation to men's minds and which have uncovered new avenues of communicating most readily news, views and teachings of every sort. The most important of these inventions are those media which, such as the press, movies, radio, television and the like, can, of their very nature, reach and influence, not only individuals, but the very masses and the whole of human society, and thus can rightly be called the media of social communication.

 

  1. The Church recognizes that these media, if properly utilized, can be of great service to mankind, since they greatly contribute to men's entertainment and instruction as well as to the spread and support of the Kingdom of God. The Church recognizes, too, that men can employ these media contrary to the plan of the Creator and to their own loss. Indeed, the Church experiences maternal grief at the harm all too often done to society by their evil use. Hence, this sacred Synod, attentive to the watchful concern manifested by the Supreme Pontiffs and Bishops in a matter of such great importance, judges it to be its duty to treat of the principal questions linked with the media of social communication. Switzerland freezes assets of Venezuela’s Maduro and his inner circle

 

The measure is said to ensure that "any illicitly acquired assets cannot be transferred out of Switzerland in the current situation", the Swiss government said

 

Switzerland has frozen all assets belonging to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and individuals from his close circle, the Swiss government said.

 

"The Federal Council decided to freeze any assets held in Switzerland by Nicolas Maduro and other persons associated with him with immediate effect," the statement reads.

 

The measure is said to ensure that "any illicitly acquired assets cannot be transferred out of Switzerland in the current situation." The Federal Council added that the asset freeze targets individuals who have not previously been sanctioned in Switzerland and will not affect members of the current Venezuelan government. Colombian president vows to ‘take up arms’ if US attacks

 

President Donald Trump has not ruled out a military operation against Colombia, saying that it “sounds good”

 

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has vowed to “take up arms” in the event of a US attack.

 

His statement followed multiple threats from President Donald Trump in the wake of Saturday’s US attack on Venezuela and the abduction of its leader, Nicolas Maduro.

 

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, the US president accused Petro of orchestrating the cocaine trade and hinted that he could soon also be removed. When asked if the US would launch a military operation against Colombia, Trump replied: “sounds good to me.”

 

In an X post on Monday, Petro promised to resist.

 

“Although I have not been a military man, I know about war and clandestinity. I swore not to touch a weapon again since the 1989 Peace Pact, but for the Homeland I will reluctantly take up arms again,” he said.

 

Prior to being elected Colombia’s first left-wing president in 2022, Petro was part of the M-19 communist guerrilla group, which agreed to lay down arms and join mainstream Colombian politics in the late 1980s.

 

According to Petro, he has cracked down on the cocaine trade in the country during his term.

 

“I stopped the growth of coca leaf crops and began a great voluntary crop substitution plan by the coca-growing peasant,” he said, arguing that his airstrikes against local cartels needed surgical precision to avoid killing children and peasants, so as not to swell the ranks of Colombian insurgency groups.

 

After Trump’s drug-trafficking accusations and the threat of military intervention, Petro said he demanded that every military officer “who prefers the flag of the US to the flag of Colombia” resign.

 

Following condemnation by Colombia and Cuba of the US attack on Venezuela, Trump also made a veiled threat against the Caribbean island, claiming that it “is ready to fall.”

 

Moscow has condemned the US “armed aggression” against Venezuela, and demanded that Washington release the country’s legally elected president and his wife.

US forces deployed more than 150 aircraft to eliminate air defenses, clearing the way for helicopters to insert troops who then moved on to President Maduro’s location.

 

After Maduro and his wife were abducted, President Trump and top administration officials praised the operation, citing both the lack of US casualties and the total secrecy surrounding it, including from the media.

 

"The coordination, the stealth, the precision, the very long arm of American justice - all on display in the middle of the night," Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said.

Ten days later, on 12/29/25, Anthony's best friends, his personal trainer and his strength and conditioning coach were both killed in a car crash in Nigeria that Anthony and the now-arrested driver survived.

 

Anthony and his friends were in Nigeria to visit Anthony's family for the holidays. The driver was reportedly driving at excessive rates of speed on known-to-be-dangerous Nigerian roads, attempted a pass, and smashed into a commercial truck stopped on the roadside, which apparently is not an uncommon sight there. There was also a report of a blown tire in their Lexus SUV before the crash.

A long-serving Queensland Police employee has been granted bail after allegedly posting highly offensive and antisemitic messages online, including comments made in response to the Bondi massacre.

 

A Queensland Police Service employee with 25 years’ service has been accused of posting a series of antisemitic and offensive messages online, including comments allegedly made in response to material connected to the Bondi Beach terror attack.

 

Muamer Nukic (50), appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday after being arrested earlier the same day.

 

He faces 41 counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence and has not entered plea.

 

The court heard the alleged posts were made across several social media platforms over a period of almost two years, with police claiming some messages were supportive of acts of violence, including the Bondi massacre.

 

One alleged post was made in response to a Threads user discussing Islamic extremism alongside an image of Matilda, the 10-year-old girl killed in the Bondi attack.

 

Prosecutors allege Nukic responded: “Zionist scm f*k off!!!”.

 

Another alleged comment was directed at an image showing a before-and-after photograph of what appeared to be a female Israeli Defence Force soldier who had lost her legs.

 

Nukic is accused of replying back to the post: “Happy birthday legless b****” followed by a tongue-out emoji.

A large explosion initially under mysterious circumstances has rocked Iran. Regional media has identified the location of the blast, which released a small mushroom cloud high into the air, in Amol, northern Iran. The timing couldn't be worse, as it unleashed some degree of panic in the country when it happened Monday afternoon.

 

It reportedly occurred at Kalleh dairy factory, which is one of the largest dairy producers in Iran, with the mayor of Amol telling Mazandaran Broadcasting Agency that the fire and explosion was sparked by accident due to repairs and a welding fire.

 

The smoke in the blast aftermath could be seen from several miles away, and news of it spread fast both within Iran and around the world, resulting in rapid speculation that it may have been connected to the ongoing wave of protests.

 

Some pundits have denounced that the industrial blast is being directly related to anti-government, economically-driven protests. The timing seems unfortunate, but the natural questions arise concerning the possibility of sabotage.

 

Currently, all eyes are on the US and Israeli reaction to the ongoing protests - now just over a week in progress, after President Trump pledged that he would "rescue" Iranians and potentially "hit" Iran "very hard" if authorities begin shooting protesters.

 

As for these persistent protests, so far at least 12 people have died, including at least one member of the security forces.

With things on edge, and as Tehran leaders remain under pressure from the West, even the instance of a simple industrial accident - if this narrative indeed proves accurate, comes at the worst of moments.
