Farmland Shock: Georgia Grower Drops 3,000 Acres, Warns of Unplanted Ground in 2026
Georgia: Crop producer Alex Harrell said that generational growers are either cutting back, quitting, falling into Chapter 12, or grasping at straws. He said that farmers are reducing land where crops are grown due to commodities prices that have gone in the tank. Fertilizer, chemical, and machinery costs have risen 300% over a short period of time. Growers in the Midwest have an advantage over those in the Southeast as irrigation is more vulnerable, deer and wild hogs cause damage and there are other regional problems. When farmers walk away, the cropland is unused, which may lead to shortages.
