Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Deputy Director Dan Bongino recently revealed the cause behind his viral social media post last summer about being “shocked” to his “core” by the truth behind the agency’s past investigations.

During an episode of “The Vince Show” on Monday, Bongino told Vince Coglianese, the editorial director for The Daily Caller and host of “The Vince Show,” that he was prompted to post his viral social media statement after reading documents pertaining to Crossfire Hurricane, the FBI’s controversial investigation into President Donald Trump over allegations that Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election.

Last July, Bongino shared a statement on X, formerly Twitter, saying, “The Director and I are committed to stamping out public corruption and the political weaponization of both law enforcement and intelligence operations. It is a priority for us.”

“But what I have learned in the course of our properly predicated and necessary investigations into these aforementioned matters, has shocked me down to my core,” Bongino added at the time. “We cannot run a Republic like this. I’ll never be the same after learning what I’ve learned.”

During Bongino’s interview on Monday,he explained how his social media post was in reaction to documents he read about Crossfire Hurricane and how he was “blown away” at the “guardrails” that “broke down so quickly” in the FBI.

“It was basically about Crossfire. I was just reading some stuff about Crossfire,” Bongino told Coglianese. “I was blown away … I lived in this kind of tiny apartment in D.C.…And I’m sitting there, and I’m thinking to myself…I couldn’t believe it happened here. You know, Vince, like having been a Secret Service agent, a police officer, and I hadn’t been in the FBI role that long, but it had been a few months.”

“I just thought, gosh, these guardrails just broke down because of people. People are guardrails, not robots … Human beings are guardrails. You know, people are power. And I was just stunned at how many people just let this — just the incredibly poor decision-making,” the former FBI deputy director added. “It blew my mind … I got up the next day, and I just fired that out … I was really shaken by the whole thing, how these guardrails broke down so quickly. It was astonishing.”

Bongino, who left his position at the FBI earlier this month,also shared on Monday that he would likely discuss the information he discovered about Crossfire Hurricane “within reason” on his upcoming show on Rumble, which is scheduled to launch on February 2.

Former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino sat down with Vince Coglianese and recounted the Friday night in July 2025 that left him “shocked” to his “core.”

Bongino had posted on X in July that he would “never be the same” after reading documents about the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation into Trump’s 2016 campaign.The post generated more than 20 million views.

But until now, Bongino hadn’t explained what he discovered.“It was basically about Crossfire. I was just reading some stuff about Crossfire,” Bongino told Coglianese.

“And I was blown away.” Bongino was living in a small D.C. apartment when he started going through the documents that Friday night.

He thought he’d seen corruption before as a Secret Service agent and police officer.Nothing prepared him for what was in those files.

“I’m sitting there and I’m thinking to myself, ‘I couldn’t believe it happened here,'” Bongino said.

Trump Russia investigation: FBI guardrails completely broke down

The FBI launched Crossfire Hurricane on July 31, 2016, based on third-hand gossip from Australian diplomats about Trump aide George Papadopoulos.That’s the entire predicate for investigating a presidential campaign.

But it gets worse.

CIA Director John Brennan briefed President Obama in late July 2016 that Hillary Clinton approved a plan to “vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by Russian security services.”

The FBI knew Clinton’s campaign was manufacturing the Russia hoax.They opened Crossfire Hurricane anyway.

Then they lied to surveillance courts to spy on Trump campaign aide Carter Page.The infamous Steele dossier — paid for by Clinton’s campaign — formed the “essential part” of the FISA warrant application.

The FBI never told the court Clinton funded it. They never mentioned Christopher Steele was cut off as an FBI source for leaking to the media. FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith literally altered an email to hide that Page worked for the CIA. Clinesmith changed “Page is a source” to “Page is not a source” to make him look like a Russian agent instead of an American intelligence asset.

That’s not a mistake.That’s a felony. And FBI leadership approved three FISA renewals even after the investigation turned up nothing.

They kept the surveillance going for nearly a year.

FBI political weaponization: People made deliberate choices to target Trump

“I just thought, gosh, these guardrails just broke down because of people,” Bongino said. “People are guardrails, not robots.”

Not that one or two bad actors went rogue.But that dozens of FBI officials and Justice Department lawyers at every level knew it was bogus and kept it going anyway.

Special Counsel John Durham spent four years investigating Crossfire Hurricane. His 2023 report concluded the FBI launched the probe based on “raw, unanalyzed and uncorroborated intelligence” without any “actual evidence” of collusion.

Durham found the FBI “failed to act” on intelligencethat Clinton’s campaign was trying to “manipulate or influence the law enforcement process for political purposes.”

The FBI had the warning. They ignored it and targeted Trump instead.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz documented 17 major errors and omissions in the FISA applications.Every single one cut against Trump and in favor of continuing surveillance.

That’s not incompetence.That’s a pattern.

Deep State still embedded: Same FBI officials escaped consequences

“It blew my mind,” Bongino said. “I got up the next day and I just fired that out.”

“I was really shaken by the whole thing, how these guardrails broke down so quickly. It was astonishing.”

“Even now talking about it, I just remember that feeling. Like, oh my gosh, did this really happen?”

Yes, it really happened.

And most of the people who ran Crossfire Hurricane faced zero consequences.

Kevin Clinesmith — the only person criminally charged — got probation and had his law license reinstated.

James Comey’s collecting his pension and doing CNN interviews.

Andrew McCabe got his pension back after initially being fired, while Peter Strzok and Lisa Page cashed in with book deals.

John Brennan still has a security clearance.

The apparatus that tried to destroy Trump is still operational.Those same bureaucrats are still embedded in the Justice Department and FBI.

They still believe they’re above the law.And they’re already plotting against Trump’s second term.

Bongino saw the documents proving how deep the corruption goes.

He walked away from the FBI after nine months because he couldn’t stomach working alongside people who thought targeting a presidential campaign was acceptable.

Now he’s going back to his platform to expose what he learned.

Bongino announced that he’s returning to his podcast at the start of February.

He officially left the FBI on January 4 after clashing with Attorney General Pam Bondi over the Jeffrey Epstein filesand butting heads with career agents who never accepted an outsider.

Good.

The FBI needs more outsiders willing to blow the whistle.

Because the guardrails Bongino thought existed never did.The only thing protecting Americans from Deep State targeting is exposure.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

And Bongino just promised to turn on all the lights when he gets back behind the mic.

I think Trump is waiting for the last year of this term to start the prosecutions, otherwise he waste his time while they try get away. Its not over until its over.
