Fun fact: In the 1950s, Bell Labs basically gave away all the science, patents and production information needed to make semiconductors to any company or country that wanted it (as long as they weren't communists, natch). Bell actually held classes to teach engineers around the world the process - because as you said, there's a lot of black magic involved. AT&T was afraid that if they didn't share the technology, they would lose their government monopoly on the phone business, so the pinheads in charge decided to just give away arguably the most valuable invention in human history.
