Russia suggests opening humanitarian border crossing with Ukraine
The move would help people to return home and families to reunite, human rights commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova has said
Russia and Ukraine should reopen a border crossing to allow people to return home and families to reunite, Moscow’s top human rights official, Tatyana Moskalkova, has suggested. (I wonder if Melania is working with her in Russia!)
Kiev closed all border crossing points with Russia and Belarus after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
“We should discuss the possibility of opening one border crossing point for Russian citizens who want to be reunited with their relatives and loved ones,”Moskalkova said in a meeting with lawmakers on Tuesday. This would help those who’d like to leave, “but no longer have the necessary documents to legally leave the country through other routes,” she said.
Moskalkova added that her office helped reunite more than 50 families in the past year.
Moscow is also in talks with Kiev about the return of Russian citizens taken by retreating Ukrainian forces from Kursk Region, she said. At least 12 Russian citizens that are being held in Ukraine’s Sumy Region do not have the opportunity to leave, and “have effectively become hostages,” she explained.
Ukrainian forces captured a number of Russians when they launched a major incursion into the Russian border region in the summer of 2024. The offensive stalled within weeks, and was fully repulsed by April the following year.
Russian officials said they received testimonies alleging war crimes committed by the Ukrainian forces during their occupation of parts of Kursk Region.
By contrast, those “Ukrainian citizens whom the Russian military rescued from shelling”have been placed in temporary accommodation centers, provided with everything they need, and are free to move around, Moskalkova said.

Senior investigators jailed in Russia in high-profile corruption case
The former high-ranking Investigative Committee and FSB officers have been found guilty of fabricating evidence in an extortion scheme
A Moscow court has sentenced half a dozen law enforcement officers, including two high-ranking Investigative Committee officials, to lengthy prison terms for fabricating evidence in an extortion scheme.
The officers werefound guilty on Monday of forming a criminal gang, bribery, and fabricating evidence. According to prosecutors, theyconspired to seize control of a major company by initiating a fabricated criminal case against its shareholders. They also demanded a 15 billion ruble ($200 million) bribe from their victims to drop the false charges.
The gang included two Investigative Committee department heads, Sergey Romodanovsky and Rustam Yusupov, both sons of senior law enforcement officials. Romodanovsky’s late father, Konstantin, led the Russian Federal Migration Service from 2005 to 2016.
Three other suspects – an investigator, an FSB officer, and a counterintelligence official – were named as accomplices. A lawyer acted as an intermediary between the gang and its victims.
All six defendants were sentenced to between 14 and 19 years in prison. They pleaded not guilty, and their lawyers have vowed to appeal the verdict.
According to investigators, the criminal group was formed in 2019 by law enforcement officials and two alleged “fixers”: Kirill Kachur, who has been designated a foreign agent in Russia, and his father, Vitaly. Both are reportedly residing outside Russia – Kachur Jr. in Montenegro and his father in the United Arab Emirates, and have been placed on an international wanted list by Moscow.
The gang targeted the Merlion Group, a major conglomerate active in fields ranging from IT to household appliances and office furniture retail. They staged an arson attack on a house belonging to the conglomerate’s former CEO and used it to launch a fabricated assassination attempt probe against its shareholders. The victims were initially detained, but their lawyers succeeded in transferring the case to the Investigative Committee’s central office, where the scheme was uncovered.
Separately, according to prosecutors, Yusupov and Romodanovsky also accepted a bribe of 109 million rubles ($1.42 million) to help suspects in another case avoid prosecution, and demanded €10 million ($11.88 million) for similar interference in a third case.

Orban hits back at Ukraine
The Hungarian PM says Kiev is trying to meddle in national elections
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused Ukraine’s VladimirZelensky of trying to interfere in Hungary’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos last week, Zelensky accused Orban – a staunch opponent of Western military aid to Kiev and the country’s entry into the EU – of “selling out European interests.” He also called for giving “every Viktor who lives off European money… a smack in the head,” apparently referring to Orban.
The Hungarian prime minister has repeatedly stated that Budapest will neither supply Kiev with weapons nor allow the transit of arms through Hungarian territory.
“Last week, Ukrainian political leaders, including the president himself, issued highly offensive and threatening messages directed at Hungary and the Hungarian government personally,” Orban said on Monday in a video message published on X.
“Our national security agencies have assessed this latest Ukrainian attack and determined that these events are part of a coordinated series of Ukrainian actions aimed at interfering in the Hungarian elections,” he added.
Orban stressed that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto was instructed to summon Ukraine’s ambassador.
Zelensky used his time in Davos to push for more financial and military aid from the EU. The Ukrainian leader called Europe a “fragmented kaleidoscope of small and middle powers,” before urging them to take harsher measures against Russia, including seizing Russian oil and selling it to buy weapons.
Earlier this week, Zelensky has called for his country to join the EU in 2027.Orban reiterated that no Hungarian parliament would vote for accession “in the next hundred years.”

US unblocks Venezuelan assets – interim president
Washington is reportedly sitting on $30 billion worth of the South American nation’s property
The US has unfrozen some of Venezuela’s impounded assets, acting President Delcy Rodriguez has announced.Rodriguez said the money will be spent on hospital equipment and power infrastructure.
Speaking on national television on Tuesday,Rodriguez said she had spoken to US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio with “respect and courtesy,” and that the unblocked funds would be used to purchase hospital equipment from the US “and other countries.”
“We are unblocking Venezuelan resources that belong to the Venezuelan people… and this will allow us to invest significant resources in equipment for hospitals,” she said. Rodriguez added that Venezuela will also purchase “equipment for the electricity sector and equipment for the gas industry”with the funds.
Rodriguez did not say what amount of assets would be released. President Nicolas Maduro claimed in 2022 that around $30 billion worth of Venezuelan assets were frozen abroad. These include oil impounded by the US and around $2 billion worth of gold frozen in the UK.
Maduro was abducted by US forces earlier this month and charged with narcoterrorism, cocaine trafficking, and firearms offenses. Rodriguez has denounced the kidnapping of Maduro, but has attempted to placate Washington – namely by allowing US companies to run the South American nation’s oil industry.
Venezuela’s oil industry was nationalized in 1976, with American contractors slapped with further restrictions by Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chavez, in 2007. Trump has repeatedly claimed that these moves amounted to Venezuela “stealing” oil infrastructure built by US firms.
Trump has warned that if Rodriguez “doesn’t do what’s right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro.”The US president spoke with Rodriguez by phone last week, and announced plans to invite her to the White House.
Rodriguez insisted on Sunday that she had enough of “Washington's orders,” and that Venezuelans alone would “resolve our differences and our internal conflicts.”Asked on Tuesday about Rodriguez’ comments,Trump replied: “I haven't heard that at all. We have a very good relationship.”( does good relationship mean something else to Trump, or does he believe VZ leadership or being truthful to him.)

Netanyahu blames Israeli deaths on Biden policy
(Part of it was Bidan’s fault but Bibi planned this killing of Jews to make it like Hamas started a war, imo)
The prime minister hassuggested that troops were killed in part due to ammunition shortages caused by a US arms “embargo”
Netanyahu blames Israeli deaths on Biden policy
Former US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested that a partial American arms “embargo” under former US President Joe Biden contributed to soldiers’ deaths during the war with Hamas. The remarks sparked angry pushback from Biden-era officials, who accused Netanyahu of ingratitude.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Netanyahu said Israel paid “very heavy prices” after the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, and argued that beyond the normal toll of combat “at a certain stage we didn’t have enough ammunition.” (Bibi giving the most pathetic excuse, ammunition was their responsibility. Not supporting Bidan at all, but this is a stupid reason by Bibi.)
Without mentioning Biden by name, he said “heroes fell” because they lacked what they needed and that “part of that absent ammunition was because of the embargo.”
In this vein, Netanyahu said the experience reinforced his push to build a stronger domestic defense industry to ensure “maximal independence” so Israel does not “run out of weapons or ammunition.”
Israeli lawyers doubted legality of Gaza attack – Reuters READ MORE Israeli lawyers doubted legality of Gaza attack – Reuters
Amos Hochstein, a senior adviser to Biden, rejected the barb, telling Axios that Netanyahu was “both not telling the truth and ungrateful to a president that literally saved Israel at its most vulnerable moment.”
He in particular pointed to more than $20 billion in US military assistance as well as other support measures, saying the only appropriate response was “thank you.”
While Biden provided strong support for Israel early after the surprise Hamas attack, in 2024 he halted some weapons shipments – particularly large aerial bombs – over concerns they would be used to pummel civilians in Gaza. At the time, Biden also acknowledged that Israel’s use of American-made weapons led to civilian casualties.
Biden also publicly described Netanyahu’s approach to the Gaza war as “a mistake,” called for a ceasefire, and said there was “no excuse” for failing to allow humanitarian aid into the Palestinian enclave. Netanyahu shrugged off the criticism, saying Biden’s approach was “hurting Israel.”
By contrast, Netanyahu has enjoyed far warmer relations with US President Donald Trump, once who called himself Israel’s “greatest friend,” though even this relationship has not been without friction. Trump in particular criticized Netanyahu for a September airstrike targeting Hamas officials in Qatar, which is a key US ally in the Middle East.
(If Bibi could have, he would have blamed Trump. It’s not like he didn’t try!)

Musk trashes ‘drooling imbecile’ Polish FMKEK
An online spat erupted after Radoslaw Sikorski accused the tech billionaire of profiting from “war crimes”
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has branded Polish ForeignMinister Radoslaw Sikorski a “drooling imbecile” in a fiery exchange on social media platform X. (I’m 1/4 quarter Polish, Elon must know we are sensitive about being called stupid. Like the joke about “how many Polish to screw in a bulb!” Actually it was funny, and being 1/4 wasn’t that bad because we were all American born. My Polish Great Grandma and Grandma were very loving and stout women. I think the women were smarter then the men. KEK and very Good cooks, excellent really)
The clash erupted after Sikorski accused Musk of “making money on war crimes”and questioned why he had not stopped “Russians from using Starlink.”
Sikorski earlier shared a report from the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW),which claimed Russian forces are increasingly using Starlink satellites operated by Musk’s SpaceX to guide drone attacks in Ukraine. ISW said that drones including BM-35, Shahed, and Molniya models are being fitted with Starlink systems to extend their range and improve accuracy.
“Hey, big man, why don’t you stop the Russians from using Starlinks?”Sikorski wrote on Tuesday.
Musk fired back on Wednesday: “This drooling imbecile doesn’t even realize that Starlink is the backbone of Ukraine’s military communications.”
The public clash is not the first between Musk and Sikorski. Last December, Musk called for the dissolution of the European Union, tweeting that “EU bureaucracy is slowly smothering Europe to death” and arguing that sovereignty should be returned to individual countries so governments can better represent their citizens.
Musk’s criticism of the bloc intensified after the EU fined X €120 million ($163 million) last week for allegedly failing to comply with transparency requirements under the bloc’s 2022 Digital Services Act. The tech entrepreneur, who is the platform’s majority owner, responded by likening the EU to “the Fourth Reich.”
Sikorski responded on social media to Musk’s call to dissolve the EU by telling him to “go to Mars.”
(You’ve got to admit, Elon is entertaining!)

BBC apologizes for failing to specify Jewishness of Nazi victims
Millions of non-Jewish people killed by the Third Reich were not mentioned at all
The BBC has apologized for failing to specify from the start that Nazi victims mentioned in its coverage of the UK’s Holocaust Memorial Day were Jewish.
Both the UK event and International Holocaust Remembrance Day are observed on January 27, the anniversary of the Red Army’s liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945.
In a news bulletin introduction, BBC presenter Caroline Nicholls said: “Buildings across the UK will be illuminated this evening to mark Holocaust Memorial Day to commemorate the 6 million people murdered by the Nazi regime more than 80 years ago.”
Similar phrasing was used by the British state broadcaster elsewhere, drawing accusations of veiled anti-Semitism and obscuring Jewish suffering. The BBC said the introductions were “incorrectly worded” and should have referred to “6 million Jewish people.”
Jews were the primary target of Nazi extermination policies. Other victims included 3.3 million Soviet prisoners of war, 1.8 million ethnic Poles, hundreds of thousands of Roma, Serbs, and people with disabilities, and tens of thousands of German political prisoners, career criminals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, gay men, and black people.
Portraying the Holocaust as exclusively a Jewish tragedy has long been used to justify the creation of the state of Israel. Figures supporting the Jewish state have previously accused the BBC of bias in covering Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, launched after Hamas’ October 2023 raid and hostage-taking. Critics say Israel used disproportionate force and likely sought to ethnically cleanse the blockaded Palestinian enclave.
Allegations of entrenched anti-Semitism in the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn helped Prime Minister Keir Starmer win the party leadership in 2020.
(This is hideously funny)

Trump-Putin photo spotted at White House
The snapshot, taken at last year’s Alaska summit,is reportedly displayed in a waiting area for official guests
A photograph of US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been hung at the White House, according to PBS correspondent Elizabeth Landers.
Landers said the image can be seen in the recently renovated Palm Room, a waiting area linking the West Wing to the executive residence, positioned above a family photo of Trump with his granddaughter.
The snapshot shows Trump and Putin walking side by side at their summit in Anchorage, Alaska, last year and appears to match the photo the US president displayed at an August press conference, which he said was sent to him by Putin.
The Palm Room is not part of public tours but serves as the main lobby for officials and journalists visiting the West Wing.
It was redesigned last September from a greenhouse-style lounge into a formal reception area with framed portraits.
While a Trump official said it is routine for photos of presidential engagements to be displayed and rotated throughout the White House,Landers’ discovery quickly drew media attention given the complicated Trump-Putin dynamic.
Since returning to office, Trump has alternated between criticizing Putin over stalled Ukraine conflict peace efforts and praising their personal rapport. Their August 2025 summit in Alaska – the first face-to-face meeting between US and Russian leaders since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 – ended without a ceasefire deal but was described by both sides as productive.
Putin has likewise portrayed his contact with Trump as constructive, presenting it as a chance to restore strained bilateral relations. He has echoed Trump’s claim that the Ukraine conflict might have been avoided had Trump remained in office, and expressed optimism about future cooperation once the conflict ends.
The photo’s appearance comes as diplomatic engagement over Ukraine continues. Last week, delegations from the US, Russia, and Ukraine met in Abu Dhabi for the first trilateral talks since 2022, aimed at advancing a peace framework.
The sides described the discussions as constructive, though territorial issues reportedly remain the main obstacle.
(I’ve never believed there was a divide with Trump and Putin, I’ve believed they are working together to flummox the DS WW!)

Russian tourists accused of trespassing on US military base – embassy
Two women were looking for McDonald’s but ended up at Camp Pendleton, according to media reports. (Does that even sound credible?)
Two Russian women are facing deportation from the US after they reportedly took a wrong turn and accidentally drove onto Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California, the Russian Embassy has said.
According to Russian media reports, the two friends, Kristina and Natasha from Samara, were on a road trip in the US last week. While driving near San Diego, they grew hungry and used a navigation app to find the nearest McDonald’s. The GPS directed them onto a route that led them directly onto the military base.
The women reportedly stopped in a parking area where they were detained by soldiers. Their car was impounded, and they have been in custody for at least three days, SHOT Telegram channel reported on Monday.
“According to the Immigration and Customs Service of the United States, as of January 26, it was granted custody of two female Russian citizens, detained after trespassing onto the territory of Camp Pendleton in California,” the Russian Embassy said on Tuesday. “At present, they are kept at a local deportation center pending repatriation.”
The embassy added that consular officials are in contact with US immigration authorities to clarify the circumstances of the incident. It also noted thatthe US State Department has still not formally notified diplomats of the Russian citizens’ detention.
Incidents of accidental trespassing at Camp Pendleton are a recurring issue, according to local sources cited by SHOT. Whether lost travelers are simply turned away or face arrest reportedly depends on the disposition of the military personnel on duty.

Question why did the base gate guard allow them in? You would think they’d have to show ID, unless they let anyone on the base. Freaking weird for sure!

Trump envoys won’t attend next Russia-Ukraine talks – Rubio
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will not travel to Abu Dhabi this weekend
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will not be present when Russian and Ukrainian officials meet in Abu Dhabi this weekend, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed.
The meeting is scheduled for Sunday,a week after the first round of three-way talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the US concluded in the same location. Although the second round has been described as another trilateral meeting,Rubio said on Wednesday that the US will play a lesser role this time around.
“There might be a US presence” in Abu Dhabi, he told lawmakers in Washington, “but it won’t be Steve and Jared.”
Witkoff and Kushner have met multiple times with officials from Moscow and Kiev, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky. Witkoff described last weekend’s trilateral sit-down as “very constructive,”while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov hailed the beginning of direct talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the US, as a “positive” step.
All sides have acknowledged that territorial disputes remain the central obstacle to any peace agreement. Moscow says a lasting deal would require Ukraine to withdraw its forces from the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, which voted to join Russia in 2022. The Kremlin has also demanded that Kiev formally recognize the new borders, including Crimea.Zelensky has repeatedly ruled out any territorial concessions.
Territory is “the one remaining item” holding up an agreement, Rubio said on Wednesday. “I know there’s active work going on to try and see if both sides’ views on that can be reconciled,” he continued, adding “it’s still a bridge we haven’t crossed.”
Putin’s top aide Yury Ushakov, who attended last weekend’s talks, told reporters before the meeting that Russia had the battlefield initiative and would achieve its objectives militarily if a diplomatic solution is not found.
https://www.rt.com/russia/631678-witkoff-kushner-abu-dhabi-rubio/
Russia has got the go to do what they want because Zelensky refused every term of peace with Russia. The US is withdrawing because the EU and Zelensky think they’ve got leverage even though they already lost the war.Guaranteed the EU, and Zelensky played cards they did not haveNow Zelensky and the EU idiots, who always overestimate their power, are cut off of American diplomacy. They wanted to bend America and Trump cave or give them more time, ==But they think, the time to fuck America by just trying to help Ukraine and EU, is freakin over. Egotists with no power do not know how to negotiate with the US, and that’s what the EU is, little egos with little power. Man they are gonna regret this! They should have taken Trump seriously at Davos. Ukraine is not more important of insulting Davos leaders.
I’m actually enjoying the EU, Ukraine with Zelensky think they still have good will from Trump and America.
They actually do not understand how Americans no longer here one word or one dollar going to Ukraine for this fake war, where all the money is stolen by EU and Ukraine leaders.
Zelensky, get this through your head 80%+ Americans do not think about you or Ukraine; they think about America and our family and people to prosper. and to get out of debt that your stupid war with Russia started, because the citizens money was intentionally sent to the thieves in Ukraine.
Ukraine has continued to be a shitstain that kills their own citizens and steal their money to keep corrupt kleptocrats happy with golden toilet.
I feel more sorrow for the people that just want a normal life, and not be killed by their government.
The only valid use of the UN is to arrest and prosecute every leader in Ukraine to war crimes against their own.

STOP THE PRESSES
‘There’s No Vision for Why It Should Exist’ Inside the Washington Post’s existential meltdown.
It’s been another terrible week for the Washington Post. The newsroom is bracing for a devastating round of layoffs, with rumors flying that some desks may be shuttered entirely.Sportswriters were stunned to learn they would no longer be attending the Winter Olympics in Italy(management later reversed course, saying a small contingent would cover the event), while the Post’s foreign correspondents have been pleading with owner Jeff Bezos to spare their department in desperate posts on X, noting the groundbreaking work they’ve done in Ukraine, the Middle East, Venezuela, and elsewhere at a time when Donald Trump’s foreign policy activity has been frenetic. For the time being, no one knows how deep the cuts will actually be,but staffers are anticipating around 100 job losses in the roughly 800-person newsroom alone. One staffer told me that “every desk is allegedly losing jobs.” The expectation is they’ll hit next week.
The ostensible reason for the layoffs is that the Post, like many other newspapers, is losing money. But unlike other newspapers, the Post is also in the midst of a demoralizing destruction of its brand that has alienated hundreds of thousands of subscribers and left even its staff unsure what the paper is trying to do, both journalistically and business-wise. “I’m increasingly finding it hard to justify the cuts from a journalistic perspective,” said one staffer. “Of course, financially, the Post is in a deep hole and I understand that. But some of that hole, if not a lot of it, is because of Jeff Bezos.”
The Post was once known for its independent accountability journalism, dating back to the Pentagon Papers and Watergate and running all the way through to January 6. It was also once known for being the foremost authority on goings-on in the nation’s capital. Now it no longer has a clear identity, a crucial component for any paper’s success, whether it’s the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal. The Post finds itself in this no man’s land largely because of a series of editorial and business decisions made outside the newsroom, at the highest level of the company — most notably, Bezos’s 11th-hour decision to pull the editorial board’s endorsement of Kamala Harris in 2024, which led to 250,000 digital readers cancelling their subscriptions in protest of Bezos’s apparent kowtowing to Trump.
The paper has tried out a new internal mission statement, “Riveting Storytelling for All of America,” to effectively replace the Trump 1.0-era motto “Democracy Dies in Darkness.” Bezos stunned the newsroom last year by remaking the ideology of the “Opinions” section “in support and defense” of “personal liberties and free markets” — a move that was interpreted as another sop to the Trump administration. “Opinions” editor Adam O’Neal essentially cleaned house upon arrival, turning the section into a MAGA-friendly libertarian outpost largely free of liberals and progressives. Some of the paper’s most prized reporters and editors, having lost faith in the Post’s journalistic mission and business, left for rival publications, further damaging the paper. And as the latest round of layoffs loomed, Bezos hit Couture Week in Paris and attended a private screening of the documentary Melania at the White House — a movie Amazon spent $40 million to produce.
Under Bezos’s leadership, CEO Will Lewis has floated a bunch of proposals to make the company profitable, few of which so far resemble anything people might actually want to buy. Meanwhile he has blamed the Post’s journalists for their plight, infamously declaring at a town hall in 2024, “Your audience has halved in recent years. People are not reading your stuff.” Now, executive editor Matt Murray, who was installed by Lewis, is singing the same tune, at least privately, telling a staffer recently that their journalism is just not resonating with readers, according to a source familiar with the discussion. “It’s like someone who slices your Achilles and then asks you why you’re limping,” one reporter said.
