Florida Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez blasted the Cuban regime shortly after news hit the wires that Cuban border guards aboard a vessel had fired on and killed four people and injured six on a U.S.-linked speedboat off Cuba's north coast. The Cuban Embassy in the U.S. did not specify the exact timing of the incident in its X post.

"The dictatorship in Cuba has just attacked a boat from Florida & murdered those on board," Gimenez wrote on X, adding, "This regime must be relegated to the dust bin of history!"

This incident is especially significant because it could provide the Trump administration with enough cover to intensify pressure on the communist regime in Havana, which the administration appears to view as already near collapse.

The key question now is how the federal government frames the narrative around the maritime incident, whether it uses it to shape public opinion, and whether this marks the early innings of a new narrative that supports future intervention to topple the communists in Havana.

Outrage In Sacramento: California Parole Board Grants Release Of Serial Child Rapist

The California Parole Board’s decision to release a serial child molester who used candy and toys to lure children as young as three years old has sparked outrage from victims, prosecutors, and law enforcement officials.

David Allen Funston, 64, was convicted in 1999 of sixteen counts of kidnapping and child molestation after a horrific crime spree in Sacramento County, during which he kidnapped, raped, and beat eight children aged 3 to 7.

The judge described him as “the monster parents fear the most” and sentenced him to three consecutive life terms plus 20 years.

Funston was recently granted parole under California’s Elderly Parole Program, which allows inmates over 50 who have served at least 20 years to be considered for release.

He was initially denied parole in May 2022 but was granted suitability for release in September 2025.

Governor Gavin Newsom (D.) requested a review of the decision and the Board of Parole Hearings reaffirmed it on February 18, 2026.

Newsom did not override the decision.

Former prosecutor Anne Marie Schubert, who prosecuted Funston in what she called “the worst child predator case I’ve ever seen,” has urged the state to screen him for the Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) program, which would allow civil commitment to a state hospital instead of public release.

“He was hunting for young children,” Schubert, now a victim’s rights advocate, told the Modesto Bee.

“It boggles the mind. He’s the poster child for why sex offenders should be exempt from elderly parole.”

Former Polish intel chiefs charged over ‘Israeli spyware’ use

The ex-heads of Poland’s domestic and military intelligence are being prosecuted for alleged use of the software without proper clearance

The former directors of Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) and the Military Counterintelligence Service (SKW) have been charged for allegedly using Pegasus spyware, the national prosecutor’s office has announced.

After Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government took over in late 2023, it launched multiple inquiries into the alleged use of the controversial software developed by the Israeli-based NSO Group. The new authorities have claimed the program was widely used by the former Law and Justice (PiS) government to spy on opposition politicians. Former officials, however, have insisted the accusations are politically motivated.

The head of the ABW, Piotr Pogonowski, and the ex-chief of the SKW, Maciej Materka, are both now facing accusations of breaching their official duties, the prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday. The charges, which carry a penalty of up to three years behind bars, are related to the alleged use of Pegasus without proper clearance and “without checking whether this system meets the requirements of information protection,” the prosecution said. Both former officials have denied any wrongdoing and refused to testify, it noted.

Ex-Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro has also been implicated in the Pegasus scandal. Last September, he was detained and brought before a parliamentary commission investigating the use of the Israeli-made spyware. He admitted initiating the purchase of Pegasus. Ziobro claimed it was used to “pursue criminals, not political opponents” and was overall a “good decision.”

Shortly after the hearing, the ex-minister faced 26 criminal charges, including embezzlement of state funds, leading a crime group, and interfering with tender offers. Ziobro had his immunity waived and an arrest warrant was issued in November last year, while he was in Budapest. The politician denied all charges, opting to stay in Hungary and receiving political asylum there early in January.

First identified in 2016, Pegasus software has been the centerpiece of multiple high-profile scandals worldwide, with officials repeatedly caught using it for questionable goals. The program is designed to target iOS devices and is believed to be capable of call snooping, reading text messages, location tracking, collecting passwords, and other malicious activities.

NED leader cut off in Congress after boasting of ‘deploying’ 200 Starlinks to Iran amid violence

The National Endowment for Democracy’s president, Damon Wilson, bragged to a House committee of his group’s aggressive efforts to spark unrest in Iran, including by smuggling Starlink terminals and fashioning anti-Iran narratives for the media.

Damon Wilson, the head of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), was interrupted by a member of Congress during a House oversight hearing on February 24 after revealing that his agency “began supporting the deployment [and] operation of about 200 Starlinks early on” amid the violence which swept through Iran last month.

Before he could finish the sentence, he was cut off by the ranking member of the House Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs, Rep. Lois Frankel, who told Wilson: “You know what, I’m going to interrupt you – we’d better not talk about it.”

Wilson’s comments had been prompted by a question from Frankel, who requested details of what appears to be a new and apparently secret initiative by the State Department to provide Starlink terminals to Iranians.

Wilson appeared to take credit for both the recent unrest and Iran and subsequent media framing of the chaos. “What we’re seeing today, the Endowment has been making investments over years that have ensured that there have been secure communications, including Starlinks… that allowed information to go both in and out of the country,” he stated.
