Missile impacts reported in central Israel as Iran launches heavy retaliation

Over 200 missiles were launched toward Israel as the joint Israel-US campaign continued to strike targets across the Islamic regime.

Sirens sounded across central Israel on Saturday during an Iranian missile attack on the country, launched in response to the joint Israeli, US preemptive strike earlier that morning.

At least 125 missiles were fired against Israel by Iran during their first barrage, with 35 entering Israeli airspace and the rest being intercepted earlier. As a result, sirens sounded in central and northern Israel.

Magen David Adom reported a direct hit on a residential building in northern Israel on Saturday morning.

According to Fire and Rescue Services, missile shrapnel impacted on a 20-story building in Tirat Hacarmel and penetrated into the 17th floor. One person was lightly injured in the strike, Hebrew media reported.

Direct hits, minimal injuries

Later Saturday, the IDF said a second barrage was underway, reminding people to adhere to public safety guidelines and remain near shelters.

Some 15 missiles were reportedly launched toward northern and central Israel in a second barrage shortly before 4 p.m., as the IDF said it was working to neutralize the threat.

Just before 5 p.m., unconfirmed reports suggested a direct hit on a residential building in a city in central Israel. No injuries were reported.

MDA said it was treating a 17-year-old who sustained light shrapnel injuries to his lower body, as paramedics were dispatched to multiple sites of reported rocket impacts across central Israel.

Pentagon Picks OpenAI To Replace Anthropic

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it has begun “the first wave of extensive missile and drone attacks” against Israel, with reports suggesting that United States bases across the Gulf were also targeted in response to the attack on the Islamic Republic that began on the morning of February 28.

In a statement, the guards said that the attacks come “in response to the hostile and criminal enemy’s aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Israel was first to announce the attack on Iran, with Hebrew media reporting the start of “Operation Lion’s Roar.” The U.S. Department of War followed up by announcing “Operation Epic Fury.” Iran, from its side, is reported to have codenamed its retaliatory operation “True Promise IV”.

Hebrew media reported that several ballistic missiles have been launched from Iran at Israel, with no immediate reports of impacts or injuries. Sirens sounded across northern and southern Israel.

While the guards only announced an attack on Israel, it became quickly clear that Iran also launched strikes against U.S. bases in the Gulf.

The U.S. Naval Support Activity in the Bahraini capital, Manama, was directly hit. Videos from there show multiple large blasts.

In addition to the strikes on Iran itself, there were reports of strikes — believed to have been carried out by Israel — against Jurf Sakhar near the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. The Iran-aligned Popular Mobilization Forces are known to be based in the area. Casualties were reported by Iraqi media.

Adding to the regional spillover of the ongoing war, AP reported that the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen had decided to resume missile and drone attacks on shipping routes and on Israel in support of Iran. One of the officials said that the rebels’ first attack could come as soon as “tonight.”

All in all, the initial retaliation by Iran is guaranteed to turn the war into a regional conflict. This was likely expected by both the U.S. and Israel.

Arab countries that came under attack could join the war on the Islamic Republic by launching their own separate military operations. With Washington and Tel Aviv eyeing regime change, Tehran likely had no other option but to fulfill its threats and attack everywhere it could reach.

Why are Americans killing and dying for Israel, again?

The US doesn’t benefit from a war with Iran in any way, but you know who does?

Israel and its US auxiliaries have attacked Iran. In terms of international law and elementary justice, things are clear beyond the slightest doubt: the attack is a war of aggression – but to be fair, in Israel’s case that hardly makes a difference anymore.

With ‘highlights’ including apartheid, ethnic cleansing, unlawful detention, torture, sexual violence, and genocide, Israel has such an extensive and constantly growing record of, literally, every crime under international law, including human-rights and humanitarian law (or the law of armed conflict), that one more or less hardly seems to matter anymore. This state is a monster, and monsters will monster as long as they can.

The US, of course, is no spring chicken either when it comes to treating international law – really, any law – as a doormat and brutally, gleefully violating the most basic ethics, the kind of simple rules normal people intuitively recognize, such as “don’t murder, lie, or steal.”
