Iran's Assembly of Experts has named Mojtaba Khamenei to replace his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country's new supreme leader, state media reported on Sunday.

Mojtaba, a mid-ranking cleric with close ties to the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, had long been viewed by elements of Iran's ruling establishment as a potential successor to his father, who was killed after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran.

The crew of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Bushehr, an auxiliary ship accompanying the warship IRIS Dena that was attacked by the United States,fled to Sri Lanka after abandoning the ship, a former Sri Lankan navy official told Iran International.

The vessel, belonging to the Iranian army’s navy, docked at the port of Colombo on March 5 due to what wasdescribed as an “engine technical malfunction,” carrying 208 naval personnel, including 53 officers and 84 officer cadets.

The former officialsaid the ship’s request for humanitarian assistance due to engine trouble was in fact a cover for a “mass escape” by the crew.

He said the crew’s decision stemmed from a deep collapse of their trust in the Islamic Republic amid the current war in Iran.

The source added that the sinking of the destroyer Dena by a US submarine further intensified this distrust, saying the incident showed the crew that the Islamic Republic does not care about the lives and fate of its forces.

The source said all 208 sailors had left the ship, were transferred to the Welisara naval base and are now under the supervision of Sri Lankan security authorities.

California US Rep. Darrell Issa to retire in move that raises stakes for GOP holding House control

Just three months after declaring “I’m not quitting,” California RepublicanRep. Darrell Issa announced Friday he is retiring instead of facing a difficult reelection campaign in a redrawn district.

“It’s the right time for a new chapter and new challenges,” Issa said in a statement.

“Serving in Congress has been the honor of my life.”

Issa, a car alarm magnate considered one of the wealthiest members of Congress,had been a chief antagonist for President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton while he served as chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Issa’s abrupt reversal injects more uncertainty in the race for Southern California’s 48th District, which was drastically reshaped in November after voters approved a new U.S. House map for California to favor Democrats.

With an incumbent out of the running, it may be harder for Republicans to hold the seat and, by extension, the party’s fragile majority in the House.

After redistricting, Issa flirted with the idea of leaving California to run for Congress in Texas. But he decided to stay put in his home state.

“I can hold this seat. I’m not quitting on California and neither should anyone else,” Issa, who represents a district anchored in San Diego County, said in a statement at the time.

California’s new congressional map, which was spearheaded by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, is intended to tip as many as five Republican-held seats to Democrats this year to offset President Donald Trump’s push in Texas to gain five seats for his party there.

Crude oil prices almost touched $110 per barrel on Sunday, after major Middle East producers cut output because the critical Strait of Hormuz remains closed due to the Iran war.

advanced 18.2%, or $16.81, to $109.48. U.S. crude oil surged about 35% last week in its biggest gain in futures trading history dating back to 1983. The last time oil prices topped $100 per barrel was after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Shortly after oil blasted past $100 at the open of trading Sunday evening, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that a gain in “short term oil prices” was a “very small price to pay” for destroying Iran’s nuclear threat.

“Only fools would think differently!” Trump added.

Kuwait, the fifth-biggest producer in OPEC, announced precautionary cuts Saturday to its oil production and refinery output due to “Iranian threats against safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.” The state-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation did not detail the size of the cuts.

Output in Iraq, the second-biggest OPEC producer, has effectively collapsed. Production from its three main southern oilfields has fallen 70% to 1.3 million barrels per day, three industry officials told Reuters Sunday. Those fields produced 4.3 million bpd before Iran war.

And the United Arab Emirates, the third-biggest producer in OPEC, said Saturday that it is “carefully managing offshore production levels to address storage requirements.” The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) said its onshore operations are continuing normally.

Gulf Arab states are cutting production because they are running out of storage space, as oil barrels pile up with nowhere to go due to the closure of the Strait. Tankers are unwilling transit the narrow waterway because they are worried Iran will attack them. About 20% of the world’s oil consumption is exported through the Strait.

Pop star Rihanna was home when a women drove up and shot at her Los Angeles residence with an AR-15-style rifle on Sunday, but no one was injured, police said.

Four rounds or fragments hit parts of the property, the Los Angeles Police Department said. The woman believed to be the shooter was taken into custody.

The shooting was reported at 1:21 p.m. at the home the singer shares with hip-hop star A$AP Rocky just outside the city of Beverly Hills, the LAPD said. It wasn't known of A$AP Rocky or the couple's children were home at the time.
