Jury trials scrapped for crimes with sentences of less than three years
Jury trials in England and Wales for crimes that carry a likely sentence of less than three years will be scrapped, the justice secretary has announced.
The reforms to the justice system include creating "swift courts" under the government's plan to tackle unprecedented delays in the court system.
Serious offences including murder, robbery and rape will still go before a jury, and volunteer community magistrates, who deal with the majority of all criminal cases, will take on even more work.
David Lammy said the reforms were "bold" but "necessary", but the Conservatives described the plans as the "beginning of the end of jury trials".

Billionaire Apollo Global Management co-founder Leon Black could be deposed as part of a civil lawsuit brought against Bank of America by women who accuse the bank of facilitating their sexual abuse by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, court records showed on Wednesday.
In a court filing, Manhattan-based U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff set a hearing for Wednesday at 3 p.m. EDT "concerning the upcoming deposition of Leon Black." The filing did not contain more details.
The lawsuit alleges Bank of America ignored suspicious payments by Black to Epstein. Black has denied wrongdoing and said he was unaware of Epstein's criminal conduct.
Bank of America has denied the lawsuit's allegations and said it looks forward to a full review of the facts.

League table shames worst prisons
The worst three prisons in England and Wales have been named by the Prison Service for the first time.
HMP Holloway and HMP Brixton in London, along with HMP Dartmoor in Devon, were the only three out of the 138 jails to receive the lowest score.
Although league tables of prisons have been compiled for some years, this is the first time they have been published.
Ministers hope that making the findings public four times a year will encourage struggling jails to raise their standards.
Holloway, which holds women inmates, and the male prisons Brixton and Dartmoor scored just one point, indicating a "failing" jail.
