Ukraine attacking Russian gas pipeline to stop deliveries to Europe – Defense Ministry

Gazprom has reported drone strikes on the TurkStream pipeline infrastructure in Krasnodar Region

Kiev has been deliberately attacking the infrastructure of the TurkStream gas pipeline in an attempt to halt deliveries to European consumers, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

The statement comes after pipeline operator Gazprom reported on Wednesday that the Russkaya compressor station in southern Krasnodar Region, which serves as the starting point for supplies through the TurkStream, came under attack overnight.

The company said the Beregovaya and Kazachya compressor stations were also targeted the day before, adding that its facilities in southern Russia were attacked 12 times in the past two weeks.

On Wednesday, the Defense Ministry confirmed the attacks, saying: “the Kiev regime, in order to stop gas supplies to European consumers, launched another attack using strike aircraft-type UAVs on the infrastructure of the Russkaya compressor station.”

The ministry stated that four Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russian air defense systems in the airspace adjacent to the station, two more were intercepted by fighter aircraft, and three were destroyed by mobile fire teams.

The TurkStream transports Russian gas to Türkiye via the Black Sea, with one line dedicated to the Turkish market and another supplying countries in Southern and Southeastern Europe.

Last month, President Vladimir Putin said Russia has become aware of plans to attack the TurkStream and Blue Stream trans-Black sea gas pipelines, adding that the goal is to jeopardize the peace process to end the Ukraine conflict.

Spain removes ambassador from Israel

Madrid has permanently terminated the diplomatic position as the rift with West Jerusalem deepens over the attack against Iran

Spain has permanently withdrawn its ambassador from Israel, formally downgrading the level of diplomatic relations with the country.

The long-strained relations between Madrid and West Jerusalem have deteriorated amid the ongoing US-Israeli war against Iran.

Spain is the only Western nation that has strongly condemned the attacks. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said his nation will not be “complicit in something that is bad for the world simply out of fear of reprisals from someone.”

The decision to terminate the position of ambassador to Israel was announced on Tuesday. It was proposed by Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares and backed by the Council of Ministers, the government said. The country’s mission will now be led by a charge d’affaires for the foreseeable ‌future, it added.

The now-former ambassador, Ana Maria Salomon Perez, was recalled to Spain last September amid a diplomatic row with Israel prompted by Madrid’s decision to ban ships and planes carrying weaponry to Israel to fuel its campaign against Hamas in Gaza.Israel denounced the ban as “anti-Semitic.”

'Scientists' Dump 65,000 Liters Of Chemicals Into Ocean In Geoengineering Experiment

Critics slam risky Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement trial as potential ecological disaster

In a move that’s raising alarm, researchers have poured 65,000 litres of sodium hydroxide into the Gulf of Maine, claiming it’s a step toward combating climate change through geoengineering.

With unknown effects on marine life, many are worried this experiment reeks of tinkering that could backfire.

The trial, dubbed the LOC-NESS project, took place off the Massachusetts coast last August, with scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution leading the charge.

They argue that boosting ocean alkalinity could suck more CO2 from the atmosphere, turning it into harmless baking soda.

Yet, as globalist agendas push these unproven fixes, freedom-loving skeptics see it as another layer of control over nature without public consent.

Over four days, the team added the alkaline chemical, tagged with red dye for tracking, to waters 50 miles off Boston. “These early results demonstrate that small-scale OAE deployments can be engineered, tracked, and monitored with high precision,” said principal investigator Adam Subhas of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. “We need independent, transparent research to determine which solutions might work.”

The method, known as Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE), aims to mimic and accelerate the ocean’s natural CO2 absorption.

As the document details, the oceans already trap around 38,000 billion tonnes of CO2 as dissolved sodium bicarbonate. By resetting the pH with sodium hydroxide, the scientists boosted it from 7.95 to 8.3—matching pre-industrial levels—and measured 10 tonnes of carbon entering the water immediately.

In the best-case scenario, they estimate the dump could absorb about 50 tonnes of carbon over a year, equivalent to the yearly emissions of five average citizens.

But that’s a drop in the bucket compared to industrial outputs, and it doesn’t address the hypocrisy of governments preaching emission cuts while funding these chemical interventions.

Critics aren’t buying the hype. Gareth Cunningham, Director of Conservation and Policy at the Marine Conservation Society, told the Daily Mail: “These approaches are resource-intensive and their ecological impacts are still poorly understood.” He added: “Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement is a short-term fix that doesn’t address the behaviours driving climate change and ocean acidification.”

Microsoft on March 10 filed an amicus brief backing Anthropic’s lawsuit against the Department of War, seeking a court order to temporarily stop the Pentagon from labeling Anthropic as a supply-chain risk.

Anthropic filed the suit on March 9 after the Pentagon designated it a supply chain risk to national security, a label that would hinder the Pentagon and its contractors from using Anthropic’s artificial intelligence technology in their work for the U.S. military.

The designation stemmed from Anthropic’s rejection of the Pentagon’s request for unrestricted access to its Claude models over concerns that the technology could be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. The Pentagon has denied that it planned to use Claude for such purposes.

In its amicus brief filed March 10, Microsoft said it was directly affected by the Pentagon’s designation of Anthropic because it uses Anthropic’s technologies in products made available to the Pentagon.

The tech giant said that a temporary block on the designation would “enable a more orderly transition and avoid disrupting the American military’s ongoing use of advanced AI.”

Microsoft warned that U.S. warfighters could be hampered “at a critical point in time” if companies are required to immediately alter existing product and contract configurations used by the Pentagon.

It also warned that putting the Pentagon’s designation of Anthropic into immediate effect will have “broad negative ramifications for the entire technology sector and the American business community.”

Microsoft said the Pentagon gave itself a six-month period to transition services away from Anthropic’s technologies but did not provide the same transition timeline for contractors that use Anthropic products.

“Should this action proceed without the entry of a temporary restraining order, Microsoft and other government contractors with expertise in developing solutions to support U.S. government missions will be forced to account for a new risk in their business planning,” it stated.

“Should companies choose to forgo the opportunity to work with the U.S. government due to the attendant risks, the U.S. government, its missions, and the people it serves would lose access to state-of-the-art technological solutions,” Microsoft said.

The Pentagon said it does not comment on ongoing litigation.

One of the world’s biggest sports agencies rebranded Monday amid revelations about its founder’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein and salacious emails he sent to Epstein’s accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell.

Casey Wasserman, a top Democratic donor, Clinton family fundraiser, and chairman of the 2028 Olympics Organizing Committee, founded the Wasserman Media Group in 2002. But emails exchanged between Wasserman and Maxwell in the early 2000s quickly surfaced in the Justice Department’s Epstein Files release in late January, prompting his exodus from the company and a rebrand.

“As of today, Wasserman is rebranding as THE TEAM,” the company said on its website Monday. “For 24 years, this company has been shaped by our work, our people and our unifying belief in the power of sports, music and entertainment. That philosophy remains the foundation of who we are — and where we are going. We go forward as we always have: Together.”

Wasserman and Ghislaine’s email correspondence, in which they discussed personal meetings, real estate, and exchanged risqué messages, unfolded over a decade before she was convicted of sex trafficking crimes.

In one 2003 exchange, Wasserman wrote to Maxwell, “I think of you all the time. So, what do I have to do to see you in a tight leather outfit?”

In turn, Maxwell offered to give Wasserman a massage that could “drive a man wild”.

Maxwell sent another message hinting at a future visit with Wasserman, and whether it would be foggy enough “so that you can float naked down the beach and no one can see you unless they are close up?”

Wasserman replied, “or something like that.”

Wasserman also confirmed that he flew on a 2002 trip with a Clinton Foundation delegation that used Epstein’s plane, notoriously dubbed “Lolita Express.”

A Ukrainian strike on the Russian city of Bryansk using UK-made long-range Storm Shadow missiles would have been impossible without the direct involvement of British military specialists, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

The regional governor, Aleksandr Bogomaz, initially said the attack on Tuesday killed six people and injured 42, slamming the bombardment as an “inhumane terrorist act.”

On Wednesday, he reported that the death toll had risen to seven, while confirming that the strike had involved Storm Shadow missiles.

Peskov said on Wednesday the missiles “couldn’t have been launched without British specialists.”

He added that the strikes again show the necessity of the continued military campaign against Ukraine, as its success will ensure that “these barbaric actions by the Kiev regime don’t continue.”

“One of the goals is to demilitarize Kiev and strip it of the ability to carry out attacks like this,” Peskov stressed.

Ukraine has taken responsibility for the strike, claiming it was targeting a local microelectronics factory. Media reported that the attack came during a shift change at a local factory, when some employees were heading to the exit.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, seven British cruise-missiles were used in the attack. The UK and other nations backing the Ukrainian government “bear full responsibility” for civilian casualties in Bryansk, it said in a statement on Wednesday.

London is “prepared to bring the conflict to a new level in terms of damage and loss of life” using Ukrainian “puppets,” it added.

The ministry said the UN must react to the incident, stating that “silence will be taken as encouragement of criminal actions” of the Ukrainian government and its foreign backers.

Governor Bogomaz announced a day of mourning in Bryansk, saying that 20 people remain in local hospitals, while nine of the most severely injured have been transported to specialized medical facilities.

Storm Shadow cruise missiles are launched from the air and have a range of up to 560 km. Bryansk is located just over 100 km from the Ukrainian border and is internationally recognized as Russian territory.

Kiev has been deliberately attacking the infrastructure of the TurkStream gas pipeline in an attempt to halt deliveries to European consumers, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

The statement comes after pipeline operator Gazprom reported on Wednesday that the Russkaya compressor station in southern Krasnodar Region, which serves as the starting point for supplies through the TurkStream, came under attack overnight.

The company said the Beregovaya and Kazachya compressor stations were also targeted the day before, adding that its facilities in southern Russia were attacked 12 times in the past two weeks.

On Wednesday, the Defense Ministry confirmed the attacks, saying: “the Kiev regime, in order to stop gas supplies to European consumers, launched another attack using strike aircraft-type UAVs on the infrastructure of the Russkaya compressor station.”

The ministry stated that four Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russian air defense systems in the airspace adjacent to the station, two more were intercepted by fighter aircraft, and three were destroyed by mobile fire teams.

The TurkStream transports Russian gas to Türkiye via the Black Sea, with one line dedicated to the Turkish market and another supplying countries in Southern and Southeastern Europe.

Last month, President Vladimir Putin said Russia has become aware of plans to attack the TurkStream and Blue Stream trans-Black sea gas pipelines, adding that the goal is to jeopardize the peace process to end the Ukraine conflict.

Putin did not publicly attribute the alleged plot to a specific party, saying it would be discussed behind closed doors with the Federal Security Service (FSB) board.

In October, FSB chief Aleksandr Bortnikov warned that Ukraine and the UK were jointly preparing an attack on TurkStream.

Gas and oil infrastructure in the Black Sea has repeatedly come under Ukrainian attacks amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The attacks involved long-range drone strikes against various facilities ashore, as well as repeated attempts to target Russian naval vessels patrolling the pipelines with sea drones.

Russian President Vladimir Putin keeps a vacation home in Sochi, though he reportedly no longer travels there due to safety concerns.

While Sochi sounded air raid alerts several times between March 10 and March 11, Proshunin has reported no casualties. By his account, air defense downed one drone over a residential home, causing a fire but not injuring residents.

"The opponent's attacks today have imposed adjustments to our usual life as residents of Sochi, and as guests of the resort," Proshunin wrote.

"Because of this, solidarity and the correct reaction of residents and guests of the city are very important. I ask all to maintain peace and observe safety rules. The threat on Sochi territory remains."

While this recent attack is extensive, this is not the first time Ukrainian strikes have reached Sochi.

In August, a Ukrainian drone hit a Sochi oil depot, starting a fire. A reported Ukrainian drone strike on Sochi overnight in September coincided with Putin's working visit to the city.

Israel Says It’s ‘Too Late’ for Peace Talks, Lebanon War Will Continue Even if Iran War Ends

Israel has rejected Lebanon’s recent proposals for negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing Israeli invasion, declaring that it is “too late” for talks and that the war must continue until Hezbollah is completely militarily destroyed.

US envoy Tom Barrack reportedly supports the Israeli decision to continue the war, saying the two sides have “nothing to discuss.” Israel even indicated that the war against Lebanon, which was launched alongside the war against Iran, would continue even if the Iran war was in some way resolved.

The Israeli Army is reportedly preparing for Lebanon to be a protracted war. They are said to be keen on expanding their military occupation of southern Lebanon and some nations, like France, are offering to help disarm Hezbollah with an eye on preventing this war from escalating into a further humanitarian crisis.

Multiple Israeli strikes have been reported across Lebanon, including an attack in the town of al-Numairiyah that killed a family of eight. A strike on a car in Tyre District killed another two people. None of the slain have been identified as specific targets of Israel. Strikes were also reported around Beirut.

Ground troops also reportedly carried out “targeted raids” against Hezbollah forces in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has reportedly escalated the number of rockets fired against northern Israel as the Israeli attacks increase, sirens were reportedly active in the Haifa area.

Israel and Hezbollah’s last war ended in November of 2024 with a ceasefire, while a ceasefire that was meant to end cross border attacks and see Israel withdraw its ground troops from Lebanese soil. Though Hezbollah stopped firing rockets from the start of the ceasefire until the past week when the new war erupted, Israel had been launching near-daily attacks on Lebanon for months, and never actually withdrew its troops.

Former Greenville CEO, Employees Indicted in Multi-Million Dollar Health Care Fraud Scheme

GREENVILLE, S.C. — A federal grand jury in Greenville returned a 16-count indictment, presented by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, charging Kevin S. Murdock, 56, Thomas C. Lee, 56, both of Greenville, and Vidhya V. Narayanan, 45, of Atlanta, for health care fraud and conspiracy to commit health care fraud.

The indictment alleges that Murdock owned and operated Premier Medical Laboratory Services, headquartered in Greenville. Lee and Narayanan were both high-level employees of Premier. Premier offered diagnostic testing services for medical providers, including but not limited to COVID-19 testing. The defendants devised a multi-part scheme to fraudulently generate revenue from health care benefit programs related to the pandemic. This included submitted false claims to the federal government for individual tests when in truth the tests had been pooled together for combined, faster processing and for manipulating test processing software. As a result, the defendants billed for tests that virtually worthless and ineligible for reimbursement. The conspiracy to defraud healthcare benefit programs generated millions in fraudulent proceeds.

The defendants each face a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and three years of supervised release to follow the term of imprisonment.

Murdock previously agreed to a consent judgment of $27,544,460, acknowledging there is a likelihood he would be found liable in the civil action brought against him by the United States and the States of Colorado, Georgia, and South Carolina for violating the False Claims Act, the Georgia False Medicaid Claims Act, the Colorado Medicaid False Claims Act, and the South Carolina Medical Assistance Provider Fraud Statute.

The case was investigated by the FBI Columbia Field Office and the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Watkins is prosecuting the case.

Mexican Transnational Criminal Organization Co-Leader Gets 30 years in Federal Prison, $500K Money Judgment for Deadly Alien Smuggling Operation

DEL RIO, Texas – A Mexican national was sentenced in a federal court in Del Rio Monday to 365 months in prison for his leadership role in a conspiracy to transport hundreds of illegal aliens, resulting in at least one death, announced U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas.

According to court documents, Pedro Luis Martinez-Jaquez, 36, of Piedras Negras, was a leader in an alien smuggling organization (ASO) that operated in southwest Texas from at least January 2021 through July 2022. Martinez-Jaquez and another co-conspirator supplied and organized the illegal alien loads and crossed them into the U.S. for the first leg of their journey. In one instance, Martinez-Jaquez called a co-conspirator, Miguel Angel Rivera, and said that one of the illegal aliens being transported had “passed out” and that he would “deal with it.” A search of Rivera’s phone during the investigation revealed photos of the alien, who was deceased.

Martinez-Jaquez’s phone number was found to be linked to the ASO via WhatsApp messages with Rivera, Rivera’s sister Luz Rivera, and co-conspirator Erica Aracely Carmona. A subsequent search of Martinez-Jaquez’s residence resulted in the discovery of 74 phones, 14 of which were seized. The remaining 60 phones were suspected to belong to illegal aliens who had been transported into the U.S. The majority of the 285 audio messages between Martinez-Jaquez and Luz Rivera referenced pickup coordination, as well as the storage and harboring of illegal aliens. ICE Homeland Security Investigations learned that the ASO was charging $9,500 per illegal alien to be smuggled into the U.S., with half of the proceeds going to Martinez-Jaquez.

The ASO smuggled more than 500 illegal aliens and generated over $4.7 million in proceeds between January 2021 and July 2022. Throughout their operation, the ASO used custom made “tow-behind” trailers to transport illegal aliens. The ASO began using an 18-wheeler with a false compartment inside the tractor trailer that held up to 40 aliens, but that trailer was interdicted by federal law enforcement on the first smuggling attempt.

Martinez-Jaquez was named in an initial indictment on Aug. 17, 2022, and in a superseding indictment on Feb. 28, 2024. He was arrested March 8, 2024, and on Nov. 26, 2024, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens resulting in death. In addition to the 30-year imprisonment, Chief U.S. District Judge Alia Moses ordered a $500,000 money judgement.

“Martinez-Jaquez is one of the most prolific facilitators of alien smuggling in the last decade,” said U.S. Attorney Simmons. “Over the course of an 18-month operation, he made hundreds of thousands of dollars transporting illegal aliens into the United States. The work we have done to secure the border over the last year has made it very difficult for ASOs like this one to operate and enrich themselves while endangering the lives of those they smuggle. This is a fight worth having, and it is one in which we, in the Western District of Texas, will continue to engage.”

Co-conspirators Evan John Herrera and Miguel Rivera were sentenced in May 2025 to 151 months and 216 months in federal prison, each with credit for time served. In January, Carmona was sentenced to 132 months in prison. The final defendant, Jose Eduardo Rodriguez Moreno, is scheduled to be sentenced on March 25.

IDF confirms death of top Hezbollah commander

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed on Tuesday it had eliminated the commander of Hezbollah’s Nassar Unit, one of the Iranian-backed terror organization’s three units operating in Southern Lebanon.

Hassan Salameh was killed in a targeted overnight Israeli Air Force strike in the Jwaya area of the Tyre District on Sunday, the IDF said.

Salameh was appointed commander of the Nasser Unit following the elimination of his predecessor, Abu Talib, in a June 2024 airstrike in the same area, the military noted.

Salameh was a senior terrorist who throughout the years served in key positions, including as the commander of Hezbollah’s Khaim region and the deputy operational commander in the Nassar Unit, it said.

He “operated extensively against the State of Israel and to advance numerous terror attacks against Israeli civilians,” it continued.

“The IDF is operating with determination against the Hezbollah terrorist organization following its decision to deliberately attack Israel on behalf of the Iranian regime,” concluded the military, adding: “The IDF will not tolerate any harm to the residents of the State of Israel.”

According to the Alma Center, a research group specializing in security threats in the north, operatives of the Nasser Unit since the start of the war on Oct. 7, 2023, carried out “numerous attacks against Israel, and many of the Hezbollah casualties belong to these units.”

Iranian-backed Hezbollah began firing rockets and UAVs at Israel on the morning of March 2, in retaliation for Israel’s targeted killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. He was killed in the opening shot of “Operation Roaring Lion/Epic Fury” against the regime on Feb. 28.

In response to the terror organization’s violation of the U.S.-brokered Nov. 27, 2024, ceasefire deal, Jerusalem launched an aerial campaign against Hezbollah, in addition to ordering IDF troops to advance and take control of additional areas in Lebanon to halt cross-border fire.

IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin told reporters at a briefing on Tuesday evening that the military was seeing attempts by Hezbollah to “increase its rocket fire toward the communities of the north while expanding the range of its attacks” to central Israel and beyond.

“Hezbollah is suffering heavy blows. We are deepening the damage to its capabilities with each passing day and increasing the pressure on it. The fire it is carrying out in order to harm Israeli civilians is a clear response to this,” said Defrin.

Throughout the day on Tuesday, the IDF struck over 80 Hezbollah sites across Lebanon, including Hezbollah headquarters, in addition to missions to thwart launches toward at Israeli territory, he stated.

“IDF troops are locating and striking infrastructure in Lebanon’s south,” Defrin said, adding: “We will continue to deepen our forward defense and our hold on key commanding points in Southern Lebanon.”

IDF Col. Avichay Adraee, from the Arab Media Branch in the Israeli military’s Spokesperson’s Unit, on Wednesday morning called on residents of six Lebanese villages to evacuate ahead of strikes.

“For your safety, you must evacuate your homes immediately,” Adraee tweeted, addressing Lebanese noncombatants in Yatar, Al-Qlailah, Kafra, Jabal al-Butm, Majdal Zoun and Al-Haniyeh.

“The IDF does not intend to harm you,” he stated, warning that anyone located near Hezbollah operatives or infrastructure was “putting their life at risk” and that any house used by Hezbollah would be targeted.

“To protect your lives, evacuate your homes immediately and move to an area north of the Litani River,” he said, adding: “Be advised: any movement southward may endanger your lives.”

On Tuesday, the IDF struck what it described as a “Hezbollah terrorist organization command center” in the area of Tyre in Lebanon’s south.

Meanwhile, the IDF completed an additional wave of strikes in Dahieh, Beirut’s Hezbollah stronghold, targeting the group’s command centers and weapons storage facilities, it announced on Wednesday morning.

Prior to all strikes, measures were taken to “mitigate the risk of harm to civilians, including advance warnings, the use of precision munitions and aerial surveillance,” according to the military statement.

Israeli strikes on oil storage facilities near Tehran over the weekend temporarily turned the Iranian capital into a fire-lit “hellscape,” with long-term environmental and health damage expected.

Though Israel claimed that the targets were military, Iran said the effects are comparable to chemical warfare on civilians. Even supporters of the US-Israeli regime-change war expressed unease.

On the night of Saturday to Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces struck oil infrastructure sites in and near Tehran, including at least four major fuel reservoirs.

The operation “significantly deepens the damage to the military infrastructure of the Iranian terrorist regime,” the Israeli government said.

Footage from Tehran shows massive fires with black fumes billowing.

In some cases, fuel apparently spilled into drainage systems and later ignited, sending long lines of flames along the streets. Eyewitnesses described the scenes as infernal.

Iran cannot participate in the 2026 World Cup following airstrikes against the country by the United States and Israel, the Iranian sports minister said Wednesday.

"Given that this corrupt government assassinated our leader, under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup," Ahmad Donyamali reportedly told Iranian state television.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in the first day of attacks. He has since been succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei.

Iran was due to play two matches in Los Angeles in June against New Zealand and Belgium, respectively before facing Egypt in Seattle in their final group stage match.

However, their participation was thrown into doubt after the U.S. and Israel began launching airstrikes on Feb. 28.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino had posted on social media overnight that U.S. President Donald Trump had assured him that Iran would be "welcome" to compete.

Trump said earlier this month he "really didn't care" if Iran played at the World Cup, but Infantino insisted Trump was supportive of the team being involved after a meeting between the two men.

"This evening, I met with the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump to discuss the status of preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and the growing excitement as we are set to kick off in just 93 days," Infantino posted.

"We also spoke about the current situation in Iran, and the fact that the Iranian team has qualified to participate in the FIFA World Cup 2026. During the discussions, President Trump reiterated that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States.

"We all need an event like the FIFA World Cup to bring people together now more than ever, and I sincerely thank the President of the United States for his support, as it shows once again that Football Unites the World."

However, Iranian officials had already begun to express doubts over whether their team should go to the World Cup.

"What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope," Iran's top soccer official Mehdi Taj, a vice president of the Asian Football Confederation, said last week.

FIFA's rules around what would happen if Iran were to withdraw are vague, but it is possible that one of Iraq or the UAE might take their place in Group G.

Meanwhile, six members of Iran's delegation have been granted humanitarian visas following the team's exit from the Women's Asian Cup football tournament in Australia.

Five players had initially sought asylum, and Australia's home affairs minister Tony Burke confirmed that a further player and one member of the team's support staff had since also indicated their desire to remain in the country.

He said one of those two individuals later changed their mind and decided to return to Iran.

There have been concerns over the team's safety on their return after the players chose not to sing the national anthem before their first match at the Asian Cup against South Korea.

That drew criticism from supporters of the Iranian regime. The team did sing and salute in their second and third group games.

Trump had called on Australia to grant asylum to the entire Iranian team and said the U.S. would do so if Australia did not.

A drone strike hits school and medical center in southern Sudan, killing 17, mostly schoolgirls

CAIRO (AP) — An explosive-laden drone blamed on Sudanese paramilitaries struck a secondary school and a health care center in southern Sudan Wednesday, killing at least 17 people, mostly schoolgirls, a hospital official and a medical group said.

At least 10 people were wounded in the strike in the village of Shukeiri in the White Nile province, according to Dr. Musa al-Majeri, director of the Douiem Hospital, the nearest major medical facility to the village.

Al-Majeri told The Associated Press three girls suffered serious injuries; two of them underwent surgeries at the hospital while the third was evacuated to the capital, Khartoum.

The war-tracking Sudan Doctors Network reported the strike first, saying those killed included two teachers and a health care worker. The group said there was no military presence in the village.

Both the medical group and al-Majeri blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for the strike. The RSF didn’t respond to a request for comment.

“This horrific crime represents a continuation of the violations committed by the RSF in the White Nile,” said Dr. Razan Al-Mahdi, a spokeswoman for the medical group, adding that the paramilitaries attacked several civilian facilities in the past two days, including a student dormitory and a power station.

The strike in the village of Shukeiri in the White Nile province was the latest deadly attack in Sudan’s nearly three-year war.

Sudan slid into chaos in April 2023 when a power struggle between the military and the RSF exploded into open fighting in Khartoum and elsewhere in the country.

The devastating war has killed more than 40,000 people, according to U.N. figures, but aid groups say that is an undercount and the true number could be many times higher.

The fighting has centered in the sprawling Kordofan region, where deadly attacks, mostly by drones, were reported daily.

The war has been marked by atrocities including mass killings, gang rapes and other crimes, investigated by the International Criminal Court as potential war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The most recent atrocities happened in October when the RSF and its Janjweed allies overran the Darfur city of el-Fasher. The RSF attack there bore “ hallmarks of genocide,” according to United Nations-commissioned experts.

At least 6,000 people were killed in three days in October in el-Fasher, the U.N.’s Human Rights Office said.

KHARTOUM: A pick-up truck carrying dozens of people to a funeral in Sudan’s southern Kordofan region was hit by a drone strike, killing 40, a medical source at the local hospital told AFP on Wednesday.

Sudan has for nearly three years been gripped by a war between its regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, killing tens of thousands and displacing millions more.

Kordofan is currently the fiercest battlefield, where near-daily drone strikes kill dozens at a time.

“Yesterday, 40 people, mostly women, were killed when their pick-up truck was hit by a drone strike on the road between Abu Zabad and El-Fula,” two towns in Sudan’s West Kordofan state, a medical source at Abu Zabad Hospital said, requesting anonymity for his safety.

“They were on their way to El-Fula for a funeral, which is why several members of the same family died,” Abu Zabad resident Hamad Abdallah added, saying they had all been “buried in the same place.”

Abdallah had on Sunday helped bury 20 people, including four relatives, after another drone strike blamed on the army hit the local market.

Neither Abdallah nor the medical source was able to say who launched the latest strike, which came just hours after another killed seven people including three children in the South Kordofan city of Dilling.

Deadly drones

The Kordofan region, home to oil deposits, arable land and the RSF’s most powerful paramilitary allies, connects the RSF’s strongholds in the Darfur region with the country’s army-controlled east.

The RSF controls West Kordofan and has for months pushed eastwards, in an attempt to recapture Sudan’s central corridor.

The army has pushed back, breaking paramilitary sieges on two key cities and attempting to cut off the RSF’s supply link with Darfur.

In their battle for territory, both sides have relied on advanced drone warfare, drawing frequent condemnation from the United Nations and suggesting healthy supply routes from their foreign backers.

An army drone strike on Sunday on the South Darfur state capital Nyala killed 11 people and wounded 20, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

The local RSF-allied administration said the army attack had struck a market in the city, where the paramilitary has declared a parallel government.

MSF said “drone strikes are being carried out in all areas of Sudan, by all warring parties, with civilians being killed and injured.”

Since the war broke out in April 2023, both sides have been accused of war crimes including targeting civilians and indiscriminately shelling residential areas.
