America-Israel's Operation Epic Fury entered its 12th day, with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicating that the most intense phase of U.S. strikes is expected on Wednesday. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes against Gulf neighbors, as Goldman's foreign affairs chief warned of a growing risk of regional spillover (read here). Overnight, market attention centered on energy, with the IEA reportedly proposing its largest-ever emergency crude release to combat Brent and WTI prices, which have reached triple-digit territory.

 

"The most fighters, the most bombers, the most strikes. Intelligence more refined and better than ever. So that's on one hand," Hegseth said. "On the other hand, the last 24 hours have seen Iran fire the lowest number of missiles they've been capable of firing yet."

 

Around 0900 ET, the IEA is expected to announce plans for a massive crude release into the market to cap Brent and WTI prices, which surged near $120 per barrel at the start of the week. In a note to premium subscribers, we outlined several problems that could arise and why any such release would only offer temporary relief.

An FBI agent's newly released testimony undercuts top Justice Department official BruceOhr'sdenial of a conflict of interest between his Trump-Russia efforts and his wife’s work for Fusion GPS, producer of the discredited Steele dossier.

The agent, Michael Gaeta, told congressional probers that Ohr had pressed him to make sure the FBI was “doing something” with the dossier. According to Gaeta, Ohr pushed Steele's collection of memos alleging nefarious ties between the Trump campaign and Russia in part because Ohr’s wife Nellie worked for the same company that had hired ex-British spy Christopher Steele.

 

Gaeta's testimony was released last week along with 56 other Trump-Russia interviews conducted by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. He recalled an August 2016 phone call from Ohr.

 

“August, he calls me and says, ‘Have you seen this stuff from Steele?’ – Chris or Steele, whatever he says. I said yes,” Gaeta recalled. “And so now I assume he had either spoken to Steele or had seen him. I didn't know, and I didn't ask.” Ohr, the agent said, wasted no time in making a request: “And he goes, ‘We just want to make sure – we, or me and my bosses – want to make sure the FBI is handling it and doing something about it.’”

 

Gaeta told Ohr, “I am putting it in the hands of this unit at headquarters who's going to look at it.”

 

“Okay, good,” was Ohr’s reply. “We just want to make sure.”

 

Gaeta’s description of Ohr’s active role in pushing the dossier contrasts with Ohr’s testimony before Congress describing a more disinterested role as intermediary between the FBI and his wife’s employer, which was hired by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign. Asked if his role represented a conflict of interest, Ohr said it did not because “I was not part of the investigation.”

UK: Boy, 16, arrested after girl is stabbed at school

 

Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy after a teenage girl was stabbed at a secondary school.

 

The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries after the incident at Thorpe St Andrew School, near Norwich, on Wednesday.

 

Pupils were told to switch off their phones and hide under their desks when the school was put into lockdown at about 10:25 GMT, the BBC has been told.

 

Norfolk Police said the boy was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily with intent after searches of the area.

 

He was taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

 

Officers said they did not believe the incident was linked to an antisemitic hate crime reported at the same school on Thursday.

Laundry Lane has remained shut since the incident, attended by armed police.

 

In response to a Norfolk Police post on Facebook, parents said they had limited information and were concerned for their children's safety.

 

Alice MacDonald, the Labour MP for North Norwich, said the stabbing was both "incredibly serious and deeply alarming".

 

Posting on X, she wrote: "Immediately, we need to give the police time to ensure that everyone at the school is safe.

 

"My thoughts are with all of them and their families, especially the victim who has been taken to hospital."

 

The MP said her office was trying to learn what had happened.

 

The secondary school, which was rated Good in its 2025 Ofsted inspection, also has a sixth form.

 

Broad Horizons Education Trust, which runs the school, told the BBC it was unable to comment further at this stage.

 

East of England Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.

UK: First Peter Mandelson files to be published on Wednesday

Documents relating to Lord Peter Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador to the United States will be released on Wednesday.

 

Cabinet minister Darren Jones said a “big number” of the documents will be released, although it is only expected to be a fraction of the papers demanded by Parliament.

 

Last month, MPs ordered the Government to release tens of thousands of documents relating to Lord Mandelson’s appointment in 2024 after questions over how the peer was vetted and what was known about his links to paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

 

The Prime Minister has insisted Lord Mandelson “lied repeatedly” to No 10 about his relationship with Epstein, before and during his tenure as ambassador.

 

Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Mr Jones will confirm the release of the first set of documents – those which have been cleared for publication by the police investigating Lord Mandelson – in a Commons statement.

 

The timing of the release has led to accusations from the Conservatives that the Prime Minister is attempting to “dodge questions” about Lord Mandelson’s vetting by publishing the documents after PMQs.

 

Shadow Cabinet Office minister Alex Burghart said: “His fingers are all over this.

 

“He’s already admitted that he knew about Mandelson’s ongoing relationship with Epstein when he appointed him.

 

“Time and again his judgment has been found wanting.”

 

But Mr Jones told Times Radio: “We were always teed up to report in early March with the first tranche of documents, which is what we’re doing this afternoon.

 

“Because I run the Cabinet Office, at the centre of government, it was always my responsibility to give those updates to the House of Commons and statements always come after Prime Minister’s Questions.”

 

The release of the documents was ordered when MPs backed a “humble address” motion tabled by the Tories, a rarely-used manoeuvre which compels the Government to act.

 

Some files will be withheld for national security or foreign relations reasons, but the final say over which documents are redacted rests with Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee.

 

The Government has also agreed a framework with the Metropolitan Police on which documents can be released without prejudicing the ongoing police investigation into Lord Mandelson.

 

Mr Jones told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “On the specific issue of Peter Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador to the United States, the Prime Minister has apologised for his appointment and said that it was a mistake.

 

“The documents that will be published today later to Parliament will provide full transparency about the appointments process, bar one document that has been held back by the Metropolitan Police because of an ongoing criminal investigation.

 

“The Prime Minister said that we only really knew of the depth and extent of Peter Mandelson’s ongoing relationship with Jeffrey Epstein once documents had been published by first Bloomberg and then the United States Department of Justice.

 

“As soon as those documents became available, and it became obvious that Peter Mandelson had lied to the Prime Minister about the depth and extent of his relationship, he was sacked as ambassador the United States very promptly.”

 

On Sky News, Mr Jones said: “It’s a big number of documents. Government takes its responsibility to be transparent to Parliament really seriously.

 

“And of course, on this issue of Peter Mandelson and his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, we all have a shared interest in bringing some accountability and transparency to these these issues.

 

“So the first tranche will be published this afternoon. A second tranche, they will come later, because there’s been further work that we’ve had to do across Government in response to the humble address, which is not quite ready.

 

“And we have two other processes that take a bit of time, given the live criminal investigation with the Metropolitan Police and the role of the Intelligence and Security Committee in Parliament has some oversight of it.”

 

Lord Mandelson was arrested on February 23 on suspicion of misconduct in public office, having been accused of passing sensitive information on to Epstein during his time as business secretary.

 

He was subsequently bailed, but later released from his bail conditions, although he remains under investigation.

We all knew this was coming… but today I heard about it actually happening.

 

A seed stage company backed by a well known VC openly admitted (in a board deck) that their strategy is to get access to a large incumbent’s software from a customer, clone the entire thing using Claude Code, and offer it at 90% less.

 

Not “build something better.” Just copy it and offer it for less.

 

The VC endorsed this as the GTM strategy. And even wrote back in writing that it was a good idea.

 

Using a customer’s licensed access to reverse engineer a product and clone it is ethically bankrupt. I don’t know how else to put it.

 

It likely violates terms of service. It may violate trade secret law as well (but I’m certainly not a lawyer).

 

And a reputable VC putting this in writing in a board deck is genuinely insane.

 

But it’s going to happen anyway.

FBI Discovers ‘Suspicious Activities’ on Its Own Networks

The Federal Bureau of Investigation addressed a cyber incident Thursday, saying that it had discovered “suspicious activities” on its networks.

 

“The FBI identified and addressed suspicious activities on FBI networks, and we have leveraged all technical capabilities to respond. We have nothing additional to provide,” the bureau said in a statement, according to CBS News.

 

The targeted networks are known as the “digital collection system,” according to sources close to the matter.

 

“Documents obtained by a Freedom of Information Act [request] by the Electronic Frontier Foundation decades ago described the FBI’s ‘Digital Collection Systems Network’ as a suite of software that is used by the bureau to conduct a wide range of surveillance activities, from wiretaps to pen registers, which are surveillance tools that record phone numbers, IP addresses, signaling, and other information, in real time,” according to CBS.

 

CNN also reported on the suspicious activity and noted that the FBI is investigating the matter thoroughly.

 

It described the investigation as being related to a system used “to manage wiretapping and foreign intelligence surveillance warrants as part of investigations.”

 

“Officials are working to determine the seriousness of the incident,” the network said.

 

It pointed out that hackers are constantly trying to gain access to the agency’s data, but added it’s rare for such a breach to be publicly acknowledged.

 

“It’s not clear whether the latest ‘suspicious activity’ uncovered by the FBI is connected to the serious Salt Typhoon breach attributed to Chinese intelligence that affected a variety of U.S. government networks,” the outlet added.

 

“Suspected Chinese hackers are believed to have infiltrated private sector communications providers and targeted national security networks.”

 

This news comes just two days after the FBI and Department of Justice announced the dismantling of what it called “one of the world’s largest hacker forums.”

 

“The Department of Justice announced today the seizure of the LeakBase database, one of the world’s largest online forums for cybercriminals to buy and sell stolen data and cybercrime tools,” a Wednesday news release read.

 

The DOJ release cited a recently unsealed affidavit that said LeakBase had over 142,000 members and more than 215,000 messages

 

“Available on the open web and in English, the forum had an enormous and continuously updated archive of hacked databases including many from high profile attacks, including hundreds of millions of account credentials,” it explained.

 

“LeakBase allowed forum users to sell the information from stolen databases, including data illegally obtained from U.S. corporations and individuals, and offered credit and debit card numbers, banking account and routing information, usernames and associated passwords which could facilitate additional account takeovers, as well as other sensitive business and personally identifiable information.”

 

“Hiding behind a screen does not shield cybercriminals from accountability,” said Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls of the FBI Salt Lake City field office.

 

He added, “This international operation demonstrates the strength of our global alliances and our shared commitment to disrupting platforms that facilitate the theft of data and the victimization of innocent people and organizations worldwide.

 

“Together, we will continue to identify, dismantle, and hold accountable those who seek to profit from cybercrime, no matter where they operate.”

Is this a cosmic monster ready to devour an unsuspecting galaxy? Thankfully, that is not the case. The red “monster” shown in the featured image is Cometary Globule CG 4, 1,300 light-years away in the Constellation Puppis. CG 4 is a molecular cloud, where hydrogen becomes cold enough to form molecules that can be brought together by gravity to create stars. The shape of CG 4 resembles that of a comet, but its head is 1.5 light-year in diameter and its tail is 8 light-years long; for comparison, the distance from the Earth to the sun is only 8 light-minutes. Astronomers believe that the tail of a cometary globule could have been shaped by a nearby supernova explosion or by irradiation from hot, massive stars. Indeed, CG 4 and other nearby globules point away from the Vela Supernova Remnant, at the center of the Gum Nebula. The edge-on spiral galaxy, ESO 257-19, is more than a hundred million light-years beyond CG 4, and is completely safe from the “monster”.

The Justice Department posted a trio of FBI interviews with a woman who alleged President Donald Trump sexually assaulted her when she was a young teenager after she was introduced to him by Jeffrey Epstein.

 

The woman’s central allegation, according to FBI summaries of her interviews with investigators, known as FBI 302s, is that Trump hit her after she bit his penis when he attempted to force her to perform oral sex.

 

The three files come as Democrats are investigating whether the department purposefully withheld materials that included sexual assault allegations against Trump.

Trump has denied wrongdoing in relation to the Epstein allegations and he hasn’t been charged with a crime in connection with them.

 

There’s no evidence to suggest Trump took part in Epstein’s sex trafficking operation. Many of the materials released by the Justice Department lack substantiation or context.

 

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the allegations “completely baseless accusations, backed by zero credible evidence, from a sadly disturbed woman who has an extensive criminal history.”

 

“The total baselessness of these accusations is also supported by the obvious fact that Joe Biden’s department of justice knew about them for four years and did nothing with them — because they knew President Trump did absolutely nothing wrong. As we have said countless times, President Trump has been totally exonerated by the release of the Epstein Files.”

 

In the files, dated betweenAugust and October 2019, the woman, whose name is redacted, alleges that when she was between 13 and 15 years old, Epstein took her to either New York or New Jersey, where, “in a very tall building with huge rooms,” he introduced her to Trump. Trump, she said, “didn’t like that I was a boy-girl,” which the interview notes interpreted to mean tomboy.

 

The woman said other people were present, but she couldn’t recall who. (Are you kidding me, a girl would absolutely remember all around her, and would have recruited them to verify this stupid story) Trump asked them to leave the room, then said “something to the effect of, ‘Let me teach you how little girls are supposed to be,’” according to the interview notes. Trump then unzipped his pants and put her head “down to his penis,” she recalled in the interview. She said she “bit the shit out of it.” In response, she said he pulled her hair and punched her on the side of her head.

“Get this little bitch the hell out of here,” the woman recalled him saying. At that point, she said, people reentered the room. The FBI interviews don’t contain information about how the incident ended or how the woman exited the encounter.

In one of the interviews, the woman disclosed that she had begun working with attorneys and “wanted to be upfront” about “her pending civil case in the event the agents determined a conflict of interest could occur.”

 

The woman said she or people close to her received a series of threatening phone calls, one of which included a message left on the phone of a co-worker but intended for her. She told the FBI she believed the calls were related to Epstein, and “stated under her breath that if it was not Epstein, maybe it was the ‘other one.’” When agents pressed her on who she meant, she said Trump, according to the interview notes.

A drone struck a major US diplomatic facility in Iraq on Tuesdayin suspected retaliation by pro-Tehran militias over the US-Israeli war on Iran, the Washington Post reports, citing an unidentified security official and an internal US State Department alert.

 

The strike hit the diplomatic support center, a logistical hub for US diplomats near Baghdad airportandIraqi military bases, the Post reports.

The two married December 31, 2020 in New Jersey – around the same time that Habba began working for Trump and just one year after her divorcefrom her first husband Matthew Eyet, with whom she shares two children.

 

Habba and Reuben did not have children together during their five-year marriage.

 

Habba exploded onto the scene as Trump's personal attorney between his first and second presidential terms after they met at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf club. She quickly became a recognizable face in Trump world, and a fierce MAGA loyalist.

 

She was a firebrand on the 2024 campaign trail and was known for her amped up rally speeches and sparkly attire.Then she served a brief stint as Counselor to the President for the first few months of Trump's second term.

 

He appointed her to be interim Attorney for the District of New Jersey – her home state – but she was unable to get the support from lawmakers that she needed to be placed in the position permanently.

 

Instead, Trump placed her at the Justice Department where she is currently serving as Senior Advisor to Attorney General Pam Bondi for all US Attorneys.

 

During this entire time, her marriage was falling apart.

 

One source familiar with the divorce said it was amicable and not at all messy, although confirmed it was Habba who initiated the divorce and filed the papers in New Jersey court.

 

'If there's one thing I know about Alina Habba, it's that she doesn't take s**t from anyone,' they told the Daily Mail. 'She's famously described herself as a 'feisty Jersey girl,' and anyone who's met one knows exactly what that means.'

Former Harvard President Larry Summers will resign from his academic and faculty appointments at Harvard at the end of the academic year, relinquishing his University Professorship — Harvard’s highest faculty distinction — and remaining on leave until that time, a Harvard spokesperson confirmed to The Crimson.

 

Summers also resigned Wednesday from his role as co-director of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School, a position he has held since 2011, according to the spokesperson. He will not teach or take on new advisees.

 

The resignation marks an extraordinary unraveling for Summers, long one of the most influential figures in American economics. His career spanned prize-winning research, service as United States Treasury Secretary, and the presidency of Harvard.

 

In a statement to The Crimson, Summers wrote that the decision to leave was “difficult” and that he remained “grateful to the thousands of students and colleagues I have been privileged to teach and work with since coming to Harvard as a graduate student 50 years ago.”

 

“Free of formal responsibility, as President Emeritus and a retired professor, I look forward in time to engaging in research, analysis, and commentary on a range of global economic issues,” he added.

 

Summers’ standing began to collapse after a cache of emails disclosed in November revealed details of a long-standing personal relationship between Summers and convicted sex offender Jeffrey E. Epstein.

 

The correspondence revealed that Summers regularly exchanged messages with Epstein about women, politics, and Harvard-linked projects over at least seven years — staying in contact as late as July 2019, the day before Epstein’s final arrest.

 

The blowback was immediate and fierce. After the initial release of the emails, Summers said he would continue teaching. But as more correspondence was reviewed, he announced he would step back from public commitments and leave his teaching post. In the days that followed, Summers stepped down or parted ways with a slew of organizations, including the New York Times, Bloomberg, and OpenAI.

 

Shortly thereafter, the American Economic Association — the profession’s foremost academic organization — issued a lifetime ban against Summers.

 

In response to the revelations, Harvard launched a formal review of Summers’ ties to Epstein as part of a broader re-investigation into the University’s historical connections to the disgraced financier. The probe also encompasses other University affiliates and donors implicated in the documents.

 

In late December, a second tranche of Epstein-related records released by the Justice Department revealed that Summers had been designated as a successor executor in a 2014 draft of Epstein’s will, positioning him to oversee the financier’s estate if the primary executors were unable to serve. (A spokesperson for Summers told The Crimson at the time that Summers “had absolutely no knowledge that he was included in an early version of Epstein’s will.”)

 

The correspondence between Summers and Epstein — which tallies thousands of emails and phone calls — revealed an intimacy that far exceeded the bounds of a professional relationship. Across dozens of threads, Summers sought Epstein’s advice on personal matters, including his pursuit of a romantic relationship with a woman he described as a mentee.

New Anomalies in the Isotope Abundances of 3I/ATLAS

The chemical interactions of atoms are dictated by the number of electrons they possess. The electron cloud around the atomic nucleus balances the charge of the nucleus, which is proportional to the number of protons in it.

Since the charge of the electron equals to minus that of the proton, the number of electrons in a neutral atom equals the number of protons and dictate the chemical behavior of the atom. However, atomic nuclei can also contain neutrons which are electrically neutral.

Stable nuclei often have comparable number of protons and neutrons but they can have variants with a surplus or a deficit of a few neutrons. Isotopes are atoms with nuclei that have identical number of protons but different number of neutrons.

The relative abundance of different isotopes of the same element depends on local production channels, such as exploding stars of different masses, the distance to the nearest historic merger of neutron stars or bombardment of nuclei by energetic cosmic-rays.

 

The Solar System formed out of a cloud of gas that was uniformly enriched by the same local processes.

As a result of this specific origin, the isotopes found on Earth, other Solar System planets, asteroids or comets, have similar isotope ratios and serve as fingerprints of Solar System materials.

Whereas the relative abundances of elements can be modified by chemical reactions which select some of them relative to others, the isotopes abundance ratio of a specific element can only be modified by nuclear processes which require temperatures in excess of ten million degrees, not found on planets, asteroids or comets.

 

Two new papers (posted here and here) report today about anomalous isotope abundances in the material that makes the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS.

The first paper, led by Martin Cordiner, reports that isotope measurements of 3I/ATLAS with the Webb telescope reveal a composition unlike any Solar System body.

The water in 3I/ATLAS is enriched in deuterium — an isotope of hydrogen (one proton) whose nucleus contains a proton and a neutron, at a level of D/H = (0.95 ± 0.06) percent, which is more than ten times higher than in known comets.

In addition, the 12C/13C isotope ratios (141–191 for CO2 and 123–172 for CO) exceeds typical values found in the Solar System, as well as nearby interstellar clouds and protoplanetary disks.

Such extreme isotopic signatures indicate formation at freezing temperatures below 30 degrees Kelvin in a relatively metal-poor environment, early in the history of the Milky Way galaxy.

Astronomers refer to elements heavier than hydrogen and helium (both of which are relics of the Big-Bang), as `metals’. When interpreted in terms of models for chemical evolution, the carbon isotopic composition implies that 3I/ATLAS formed 10–12 billion years ago.

Hence, 3I/ATLAS is interpreted in this paper as a fragment of an ancient planetary system with a low metallicity.

 

The second paper, led by Cyrielle Opitom, reports the measurement of carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios in 3I/ATLAS from observations of the cyanide (CN) molecule, based on observations with the Very Large Telescope in Chile.

The data implies a 12C/13C ratio of 147(+87/-40) and a 14N/15N ratio of 343(+454/-124). The 14N/15N ratio is more than twice above the value of about 150 usually measured for solar system comets.

The 12C/13C is marginally higher than the values usually measured for solar system comets and in the interstellar medium. Similarly to the first paper, the authors here conclude that their measurements might indicate an origin from an old, low-metallicity star.

 

However, both papers do not realize that a low-metallicity origin for 3I/ATLAS generates untenable tension with its inferred mass and abundance.

Analysis of the latest data from the Hubble Space Telescope on 3I/ATLAS (reported here), suggests a nucleus radius of about 1.3 kilometers and a number density of about 0.007 per AU cubed (where AU is the Earth-Sun separation).

This implies 30 trillion objects and a total mass of 100 Earth masses within the volume of the Oort cloud out to 100,000 AU around the Sun — which is roughly half way to the nearest star, Proxima Centauri.

 

Only a tenth of all stars in the Milky-Way’s thick disk has a metallicity that is 10 times below the solar value (as discussed here).

By restricting the source population of 3I/ATLAS to these low-metallicity stars, I find that each of these low-metallicity stars must produce 1,000 Earth masses in objects the size of 3I/ATLAS.

Most of the material in the gas plume around 3I/ATLAS is made of carbon or oxygen based molecules (as reported here), suggesting that the object is made of heavy elements, considered as metals.

 

This mass budget calculation requires the production of 0.003 solar masses in 3I/ATLAS-like objects per star. However, solar mass stars with a tenth of the solar metallicity have only 0.002 solar masses in heavy elements within them.

In addition, their planetary systems which serve as the natural birth sites of interstellar objects, are expected to originate from debris disks that contain at least ten times less mass than the host star.

On top of that, one expects a mass spectrum of ejected interstellar objects with at least ten times more mass in objects with masses that are orders of magnitude different from that of 3I/ATLAS (as discussed here).

 

This calculation implies that low-metallicity stars miss the required mass budget by at least three orders of magnitude and cannot account for the interstellar population of 3I/ATLAS-like objects even if they ejected all their heavy elements to interstellar space.

The more data we get about 3I/ATLAS, the more puzzling it looks. As Forrest Gump said in the 1994 film: “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”

Retail gasoline prices have already risen sharply in March, now averaging $3.60 per gallon, the highest since at least 2024.

 

Still, any inflationary pressure stemming from current energy price volatility is largely supply-driven and is expected to quickly subside once combat operations wind down.

More Spacewalk Preps, Advanced Research as Cargo Craft Readies for Departure

The Expedition 74 crew continued its spacewalk preparations on Tuesday while keeping up vascular health research and artificial intelligence studies.

Mission managers have also given the go for the departure of a U.S. cargo spacecraft from the International Space Station this week.

 

NASA flight engineer Jessica Meir tried on her spacesuit today with assistance from fellow NASA flight engineer Jack Hathaway inside the Quest airlock. The duo confirmed that the spacesuit is airtight and properly configured and assessed its comfort and mobility.

Afterward, flight engineers Chris Williams of NASA and Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) joined the pair and called down to mission controllers for a spacewalk procedures review.

Earlier, Williams prepared a helmet for installation on a spacesuit while Adenot trained to use the Canadarm2 robotic arm to support the spacewalkers.

 

Meir and Williams are preparing for an upcoming spacewalk to ready the orbital outpost for a new roll-out solar array.

The duo will spend about six-and-a-half-hours in the vacuum of space installing a modification kit and routing cables on the port side of the orbital outpost for the future roll-out solar array.

The station’s seventh roll-out solar array will be installed on a later spacewalk to augment the main solar arrays’ power generation capabilities.

 

Cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev joined each other again on Tuesday and applied sensors to their forehead, fingers, and toes that sent their blood flow data by Bluetooth adaptor to a laptop computer where it was recorded for analysis.

Doctors will use the biomedical data to understand how living in space affects vascular health.

 

Kud-Sverchkov also cleaned and inspected the Zvezda service module’s ventilation system.

Mikaev took turns with Roscosmos flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev continuing to test artificial intelligence tools as a way to improve crew operations and communications with mission controllers.

Fedyaev earlier spent time inside the Nauka science module replacing orbital plumbing components, inspecting its ventilation system, and measuring the airflow.

 

Mission managers have approved the departure of Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL spacecraft for 7:05 a.m. EDT on Thursday after nearly six months attached to the Unity module.

Robotics controllers will remotely command the Canadarm2 to uninstall Cygnus from Unity then release it into Earth orbit for a fiery, but safe reentry above the South Pacific Ocean two days later.

Curiosity Blog, Sols 4825-4831: Exploring the Borderlands

Earth planning date: Friday, March 6, 2026

 

Curiosity is in the last stage of its exploration of the spiderweb-like boxwork unit. This stage consists of exploring the eastern and southern borders of this terrain.

There were two multi-sol plans assembled this week. The previous plan put Curiosity at a site on the eastern extent of the boxwork unit with bedrock that allowed for brushing and in-place measurements with APXS and MAHLI of the bedrock target “Infiernillo.”

The ChemCam also took a LIBS chemical measurement of this target as well as a nodular-rich piece of bedrock assigned the name “Humahuaca.”

MAHLI was tasked to image a pitted vertical rock face which was dubbed “Timboy Chaco” (part of which is shown in the MAHLI color image accompanying this report).

Mastcam color mosaics and ChemCam Remote Micro-Imager (RMI) mosaics were also collected to characterize nearby terrain including a butte to the south and the geologic contact between the boxwork terrain and the adjacent layered, light-toned unit.

 

A midweek drive put the rover even closer to the eastern edge of the boxwork unit and set it up for two or more drives to the southern edge of the boxwork.

The workspace present for Friday planning included bedrock exposures and a dark-toned float rock.

The float rock was large enough for in-situ observation by APXS, and it was also targeted for up-close imaging by MAHLI and a measurement by ChemCam to observe its reflectance properties.

Some other dark float rocks observed by Curiosity in the past year have been hypothesized as being stony meteorites (chondrites).

 

Measuring the chemistry and reflectance of this dark rock, named “Thola,” will allow the team to determine if it is native to Mars or a meteorite from beyond.

The Friday plan also included ChemCam remote chemistry measurements of the smooth bedrock target “Valle Fertil” and a nodular bedrock target “Norte Grande.”

The plan also included Mastcam mosaics of light-toned bedrock across the eastern contact of the boxwork unit to assess sedimentary structures and determine stratigraphic relationships, observations of smaller troughs in the regolith, and other mosaics of nearby ridges as well as a two-frame mosaic of the dark float rock Thola and another dark-toned pebble.

 

The plan concludes with a drive toward the southern border of the boxwork unit. Given that this southern contact is approximately 100 meters (about 109 yards) away, it will likely require two drives.

WASHINGTON (7News) — A van drove through a security barricade near the White House on Wednesday morning, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and U.S. Secret Service (USSS).

Around 6:37 a.m., D.C. police officers responded to the vicinity of the White House to assist Secret Service after the van drove through the temporary security barrier in the area of Madison and H Streets, Northwest.

Authorities confirmed there were no injuries, and the driver was apprehended. The person is currently being questioned and criminal charges are pending, USSS said.

Iran has sent at least 11.7 million barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz since the war began on Feb. 28, all of which were headed to China, Samir Madani, co-founder of TankerTrackers.com, told CNBC on Tuesday.

 

The firm monitors vessel movements with satellite imagery, allowing it to capture vessels that would otherwise go undetected if their tracking systems are switched off. Many vessels have “gone dark” after Tehran threatened to attack any vessel attempting to pass through the waterway.

 

Shipping intelligence data provider Kpler estimates around 12 million barrels of crude oil to have passed through the strait since the war started. “Given that China has been the primary buyer of Iranian crude in recent years, a significant share of these barrels could ultimately head there,” said Nhway Khin Soe, crude analyst at Kpler, adding that confirming the final destination for these vessels had become increasingly challenging.

 

China’s National Energy Administration did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comments.

 

The Strait of Hormuz,the narrow waterway that has been critical to the transportation of about one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas, has seen shipping traffic slow to a trickle since the war started last month, with tankers largely avoiding the besieged waterway.

 

Oil tankers transiting through the Strait “must be very careful,” a spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in an interview with CNBC’s Dan Murphy on Monday.

 

Three of the six tankers captured on satellite imagery that have departed Iran since Feb. 28 were Iranian-flagged, said Madani.

 

As oil prices have soared on supply disruption fears, U.S. President Donald Trump told Fox News’ Brian Kilmeadethat ships stranded near the passageway need to “show some guts” and push through the channel. “There’s nothing to be afraid of, they have no Navy, we sunk all their ships,” Trump said.

 

Alternative exports outlet?

 

Kharg island terminal, located about 15 miles off the coast of mainland Iran, has long been the country’s primary oil export facility, handling around 90% of its crude exports before tankers travel through the Strait of Hormuz.

 

Now, Iran has also resumed loading tankers at the Jask oil and gas terminal along the Gulf of Oman, south of the Strait of Hormuz, which could add additional capacity to crude shipments.

 

An Iranian vessel was loading 2 million barrels of crude oil — only the fifth such loading there in the past five years, according to TankerTrackers.

 

The renewed activity at Jask signals that Tehran is exploring alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz, though the extent to which it can serve as a viable route for shipments remains uncertain, said Soe.

 

The Jask oil facility — Iran’s only crude export outlet on the Sea of Oman that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz entirely —has rarely been used as it appears far less efficient.

 

Loading a single Very Large Crude Carrier, a class of supertanker built for long-haul oil transport, can take up to 10 days, Madani said. “It has good domestic propaganda value, but not much in terms of a logistical advantage.” For comparison, a VLCC takes about one or two days to load in the Kharg Island.

Polled were 1,000 registered voters with 93.6% definitely or very likely to vote. The party breakdown is 37% Republican, 36% Democrat, 27% Independent. Party breakdown shows broad support. The margin of error for overall results is +/- 3.2 percentage points.

Right to refuse medical treatment generally: 87.9% agree (58.8% strongly).

Overall, the poll shows very strong support (80–88%) for adult medical autonomy, the right to refuse treatment/vaccines as adults, freedom of medical speech for doctors, and protection from employment discrimination based on medical choices.

 

Majority support remains when the question involves children (school mandates 54–66%, parental refusal for dependents 66%). More noteworthy, however, these results illustrate erosion in public support for school vaccine mandates since 2019 as also seen in other surveys.

 

Retrospective judgment on Covid policies leans toward viewing them as excessively damaging. Trust in figures like Dr. Anthony Fauci and associated public health directives remain low (around 28–35%), with majorities believing guidance prioritized other interests or enabled excessive restrictions.

 

There is also broad approval for more vaccine safety research. The results reflect an electorate (especially among likely 2028 voters) that is protective of individual medical decision-making rights.
