Divorced guy I've been working with the past couple of years decided to become a digital nomad satying at hostels on the cheap. He's SQL DBA and works remote. Met a Romanian girl 25 years his junior at a hostel in his continental travels and decided to visit Romania. Cleared it with the CEO to visit Romania and work. Traveled to Instanbul, Turkey. Broke up with Romanian girl when she left Turkey back to Romania. Met a couple Turkish guys, one turkish military guy and other just a guy. Made friends and went to hookah bar and drank tea. Called us and panned around showing hookah bar and guys he met. Military guy was WIDE EYED when the camera got to him. Coworker told us he was going to Cairo, Egypt next.
Called us from Egypt and showed us live vid of the pyramids you could see from his big hotel room. Obviously not a hostel. Very nice. Panned around the room and O caught a glimpse of wide eyed military guy again. In Egypt? Doesn't Turkey share a border with Iran who we're bombing the fuck out of?
Co worker signs off on Monday normal. Signs on Tues Morning normal. Tells boss at 11 via email he not feeling good and needs to lay down. Boss emails back OK feel better. 5 Mins later post a message on team slack sperging out saying he quits because of the corrupt nature of the company and that they were taking advantage of him because he was a convicted felon. We're all like WTF? I sent reply telling him DEL MSG NOW. I sent him a txt "Hey man ya there?" No response. We start shutting down all his remote access and changing PW's. Turns out he's threatening to extort the company and deploy nukes in our software. Company is panicked. Received a company wide email from his full.name@gmail.com account detailing his demands, what he was going to do whether his demands were met or not, and included some handly links to articles about his arrest none of us knew about.
Company is reacting appropriately, it's a cyber threat and many authorities are now involved.
