Galaxies in the River: NGC 1300 and NGC 1297

 

Spiral NGC 1300 and elliptical NGC 1297 are galaxies that lie on the banks of the southern constellation Eridanus (The River). At 70 million light-years distant or more, both are members of the Eridanus Galaxy Cluster. About 100,000 light-years across, at lower left in this sharp, galaxy group photo NGC 1300 is seen face-on with a prominent central bar and grand, sweeping spiral arms. Like other spiral galaxies, including our own barred spiral Milky Way Galaxy, NGC 1300 is thought to have a supermassive central black hole. A contrast in appearance and slightly more distant, NGC 1297 is the roughly spherical large elliptical galaxy near the top of the frame. With little active star formation, elliptical galaxies are composed of older populations of stars and are likely he result of multiple collisions and mergers with spirals.

I had the same error when I tried to grab tomorrow's deltas.

I've seen this in the past.

I expect the site will be back up again later, based on previous experience.

This is why I post deltas (from QAgg) and posts (from QAlerts) so we can at least have something, if one of the sites is down.

As of now I've got all the posts archived for all 365 days, so if both sites go down we'll have those.

I've noticed that each day that the numbers of posts is different from the numbers of deltas, it's the number of posts that is greater, so we will always have the deltas in there, among the posts mentioning certain days.

For now, though, QAlerts is working, and I bet QAgg will go back up later.

Leesburg explosion: Loud noise and flash of light reported across Loudoun County, Virginia; โ€˜meteor or thunder?'

Residents of Leesburg, Virginia, reported a loud explosion on Friday night. Many took to X to describe a sudden boom accompanied by a flash of light. Leesburg is located in Loudoun County, Virginia.

 

Residents share details

One person wrote, "It was brief, loud, rattled my house (east Leesburg, near lansdowne) and may have been accompanied by a flash of light but I canโ€™t say that for sure. And it happened at exactly 10:49."

Another added, "I heard it and felt it (short, a second maybe) in eastern part of Leesburg."

 

A third resident reported, "I heard/felt it. Right at 10:49. Loudoun Police are searching different areas around Leesburg for the source, but nothing yet. Police scanners indicate that they are searching and still investigating."

Another person added, "A loud boom was heard by my household and many others in Leesburg about 40 minutes ago. Per scanner traffic, the noise was heard all over central and western Loudoun County."

 

Investigative reporter A.J. Perez also shared updates on X, writing, โ€œFiretrucks and other rescue vehicles circled for more than 20 minutes looking for the source.

They eventually decided to set up a temporary control center near the courthouse. After meeting for about 10 minutes, they left with no answers. Note: Thunderstorms are in the area.โ€

 

Perez added that neighborhood platforms such as Ring Neighbors and Nextdoor were flooded with speculation such as โ€œsonic boom, thunder (incl. a superbolt, earthquake, meteor, a missile, natural gas explosion.โ€

"Some saw a flash of light simultaneous to the boom," Perez wrote on X.

Local authorities have not yet released a statement, and the cause of the reported explosion remains unknown.

Astronomers keep finding new moons of Jupiter and Saturn

A multitude of new moons have made their presence known around Jupiter and Saturn, bringing their population of moons to 101 and 285, respectively.

The new discoveries also bring the total number of known moons orbiting planets and dwarf planets in the solar system to 442 โ€” and that's not including the many moonlets accompanying various asteroids or small Kuiper Belt objects.

 

The newly found moons โ€” four for Jupiter and 11 for Saturn โ€” were announced by the Minor Planet Center, which is the clearing house for astronomical discoveries of asteroids, comets, centaurs and, indeed, moons.

None of the newly discovered moons are very large, averaging about 1.9 miles (3 kilometers) in diameter. They have very wide orbits, far wider than the larger moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and are exceedingly faint, between magnitude 25 and 27.

(For context, our moon sits at magnitude -12.6.) This puts them well beyond the range of backyard telescopes.

 

Instead, it took intense observations from some of our largest ground-based telescopes to snag them.

The four new moons of Jupiter were all found by astronomers Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science and David Tholen of the University of Hawaii, using the 6.5 meter Magellanโ€“Baade telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile and the 8-meter Subaru telescope atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii.

 

Meanwhile, the 11 new moons of Saturn were uncovered thanks to a team led by Edward Ashton at the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics in Taiwan.

They used the 3.5-meter Canadaโ€“Franceโ€“Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea. This comes after Ashton led a team to discover 128 new moons of Saturn as recently as 2025.

 

Both Sheppard and Ashton in particular are prodigious discoverers of moons in the solar system, with over 200 each to their name, many of them being co-discoveries.

While Jupiter is lagging behind Saturn in the moon stakes by quite a large number, Europa Clipper and the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) missions, currently heading to Jupiter, could redress the balance when they arrive in the Jovian system in the early 2030s.

 

To summarize, the current tally is that for the planets, Earth has one moon, Mars has two, Jupiter has 101, Saturn has 285, Uranus has 28 and Neptune has 16 while Venus and Mercury have none.

For the dwarf planets, Pluto has five, Eris has one, Makemake has one, Haumea has two and Ceres has none.

The new moons of Jupiter were announced in Minor Planet Electronic Circulars MPEC 2026-F09, F10, F11 and F12, and the 11 new moons of Saturn were declared in MPEC 2026-F14.

It is not totally clear as to when or how this will be implemented โ€“ i.e. atop NASA.gov, a new part thereof, or something else. A โ€œNASA Strategic Planโ€ is mentioned โ€“ but which one are they talking about?

NASA has not actually had a current โ€˜strategic planโ€™ for a while and they are usually not a โ€˜planโ€™ or โ€˜strategicโ€™ when a document with that name is posted online. Also unclear is whether PAO/OCOMM will do this or some other TBD organization.

It certainly sounds interesting โ€“ but NASA has a really spotty track record when it comes to understanding the audiences it should be serving outside of its front door and how to serve them. Just sayinโ€™.

 

Update: NASA Goddard and Johnson have links that to pages that include โ€˜front doorโ€™. Thatโ€™s fine, but where does the agency as a whole tell all of its audiences what it can do for them โ€“ without a geographical bias focusing on one center but not others?

Eric Swalwell โ€œNannygateโ€ Explodes: DHS and FEC Complaints Allege Illegal Alien Employment and Misuse of Campaign Funds for Childcare

On February 16, 2026, I filed two well-documented federal complaints against Congressman Eric Swalwell, one with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS/ICE), and another with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Together, these filings raise serious questions about whether Swalwell engaged in illegal patterns of conduct that reflect his disregard for federal law and a potential abuse of campaign funds for personal benefit.

 

At issue are two distinct but closely related allegations: first, that Swalwell continued employing a foreign national nanny illegally for two years after her legal work authorization expired; and second, that he illegally used campaign funds to cover what appear to be ongoing personal childcare expenses totaling more than $300,000.

 

Taken together, these allegations suggest a sustained pattern in which legal requirements were well understood by Swalwell, and then ignored for personal gain. I published both complaints on SwalwellisDisqualified.com.

 

The DHS/ICE Complaint: Alleged Employment of an Unauthorized Worker

 

In 2022, Eric Swalwell and his wife employed a Brazilian national, Amanda Barbosa, as a live-in Au Pair under the J-1 visa program. Barbosa resided in the Swalwell household and provided full-time childcare for their three young children. In 2022, Barbosa was paid approximately $46,929.70 for her services by Swalwellโ€™s campaign under โ€œChildcare for Campaign Eventsโ€.

 

Critically, Barbosaโ€™s J-1 visa, and thus her legal authorization to work, expired at the end of December 2022. The Swalwells were fully aware of this deadline. In fact, earlier in 2022, they attempted to secure permanent work authorization for Barbosa by filing a federal labor certification (ETA-9089), which required a formal job posting in The Washington Post. Their advertisement outlined a demanding, full-time nanny position which included:

 

taking care of 3 kids & help satisfy kidsโ€™ physical, emotional, intellectual, & social needs

assist w/care of dog, organize kidsโ€™ play activities, drive kids to appts & activities

household cleaning &laundry, prep kidsโ€™ meals, Mon to Fri, 7A to 4P, Wknd work time

The Swalwellโ€™s permanent work authorization application was denied by the Department of Labor.

 

The FEC Complaint: Campaign Funds for Personal Childcare

 

The second complaint, filed with the Federal Election Commission, addresses a separate but equally serious issue: whether Eric Swalwell illegally used campaign funds from donors to pay for his regular personal childcare expenses.

 

Federal election law is clear under 52 U.S.C. ยง 30114(b): campaign funds may not be converted to personal use. Campaign funds may only be used for expenses that arise directly from campaign activity and would not exist otherwise. Personal expenses, those that would exist regardless of candidacy, are strictly prohibited.

 

In 2022, Swalwell sought formal guidance from the FEC on whether he could use campaign funds to pay for childcare. The Commissionโ€™s response to Swalwell was explicit: such expenses are permissible only if they are tied to specific campaign events and are properly documented. As allege in my complaint, Swalwell disregarded that guidance and instead subsidized his candidateโ€™s personal household expenses.

 

Abuse of Office for Personal Gain by Eric Swalwell

 

Taken together, my DHS and FEC complaints outline a consistent pattern:

 

Swalwell at first sought to comply with the law (labor authorization application, request for FEC advisory opinion)

Then the law said โ€œnoโ€, imposing clear limitations (denial of work authorization, denial of regular childcare expenses)

But Swalwellโ€™s conduct continued anyway, in violation of the legal decisions and in blatant disregard of the law

Employing a foreign national without valid work authorization, if proven, would reflect a willingness by Swalwell to ignore immigration and labor laws that public officials are sworn to uphold. Despite being a former deputy district attorney, Eric Swalwell appears to have a problem with immigration law. In his campaign for governor of California, he vows to expel ICE, while working to defund DHS in congress.

In August 18, 2018, Joe was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency. He graduated with Field Training Class 35, completed Paramilitary Certification, and deployed as a Paramilitary Operations Officer to Northern Africa. How Open NASA Data on Comet 3I/ATLAS Will Power Tomorrowโ€™s Discoveries

The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS will soon leave our solar system, never to return, but the observations of the comet will live on in NASAโ€™s public data archives.

More than a dozen NASA science missions turned their instruments to observe the comet, which is only the third identified object to be visiting our solar system from interstellar space.

 

How open data first captured 3I/ATLAS

The NASA-funded ground-based ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) survey telescope in Rio Hurtado, Chile first discovered 3I/ATLAS July 1, 2025.

However, queries to another NASA data archive revealed that the comet first appeared on camera long before its official identification in July.

 

NASAโ€™s TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite), which scans the sky for planets outside our solar system, has a wide field of view that happened to capture 3I/ATLAS in May 2025.

This allowed astronomers to better track the cometโ€™s trajectory and understand more about its path through the solar system. TESS data is publicly available in the NASA-funded Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST).

 

โ€œNASAโ€™s scientific data archives are a gold mine of discoveries waiting to be made,โ€ said Kevin Murphy, chief science data officer at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

โ€œThe early observations of 3I/ATLAS from the TESS mission represent just one example of the exciting insights our open data can reveal.โ€

 

Uncovering comet composition

Decades of observations have given scientists a good idea of the usual chemical makeup and structure for comets formed within our solar system, but because 3I/ATLAS formed elsewhere, scientists anticipated this comet would have different characteristics.

To date, few, if any, comets have been observed by as many spacecraft as 3I/ATLAS, and combining data from these different missions can deliver powerful new insights.

 

For example, researchers discovered the relative water, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide production rates of 3I/ATLAS differed from typical comets.

They found this result by combining spectral data from NASAโ€™s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) Mars orbiter with infrared observations from NASAโ€™s James Webb Space Telescope and SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) mission.

NASAโ€™s commitment to open science makes it easier than ever to work with data from different sources.

For example, the agencyโ€™s Planetary Data System sets standards that guide planetary science missions to store their data in the same format. It also develops tools that can work across data from several different missions.

 

โ€œOpen science, as a set of principles, has been pushing us as research communities and NASA to make data more accessible,โ€ said Thomas Statler, lead scientist for Solar System Small Bodies at NASA Headquarters, who coordinated the agencyโ€™s observation campaign for 3I/ATLAS.

Data from SPHEREx, including its observations of 3I/ATLAS, can be accessed through the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive (IRSA). Data from MAVEN is available through the Planetary Data System. Webbโ€™s observations can be found in the MAST archive.

 

Future research

In the short term, scientists and researchers will be able to use 3I/ATLAS data to learn even more about the cometโ€™s structure and composition. However, the impact of NASAโ€™s observations will have effects far beyond this one target.

Humans only recently developed technologies capable of spotting interstellar objects passing through our solar system.

The first one ever detected, โ€˜Oumuamua, was discovered in 2017, but scientists estimate an interstellar object may pass through our solar system about once per year. With the advent of ever more powerful telescopes, these discoveries will become much more common.

 

As we become more aware of interstellar objects, scientists will increasingly be able to compare and contrast interstellar objects with each other and understand them as a group.

The amount of data collected about 3I/ATLAS means this comet could become an important part of the context for understanding interstellar comets for the rest of time. This makes it even more beneficial for that data to be available for everyone to access.

โ€œThirty-five years from now, when astronomers have seen another thirty-five yearsโ€™ worth of data on interstellar comets, they're going to be asking different questions,โ€ Statler said.

โ€œThe way we leave a legacy so scientists of the future can answer the questions of the future is by having these data here and preserved for them to use.โ€

Week Wraps with Health Research and Spacewalk Closeout Procedures

Health research and final spacewalk closeouts wrapped up the week for the Expedition 74 crew members aboard the International Space Station as they gear up to receive a cargo delivery next week.

 

Understanding how the human body reacts to space is key to ensure crews thrive on future longer-duration missions.

Residents aboard the orbital complex often collect biological samples for ground teams to analyze, helping pinpoint microgravity-induced changes in the human body.

To facilitate this work, NASA astronauts Jack Hathaway and Jessica Meir collected and analyzed blood samples in the morning for the Venous Flow experiment, which examines how spaceflight affects blood flow.

Afterward, Hathaway guided an ultrasound scan on Meir to examine her cardiovascular system.

 

Later on, the duo was joined by NASA astronaut Chris Williams and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot to review procedures for a future spacewalk and meet with ground teams once more for another debrief following the conclusion of Wednesdayโ€™s seven-hour, two-minute spacewalk.

Williams worked in some time to power on the stationโ€™s free-flying robots, Astrobee, for future operations before moving onto spacesuit work, charging the batteries and configuring them for stowage.

Adenot removed the impact shields on the suits and completed an array of other tasks throughout the day, including hatch seal inspections and computer battery swaps.

 

In the Roscosmos segment, flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev enjoyed a day off.

His colleagues, Commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and flight engineer Sergei Mikaev conducted maintenance and swapped batteries on a few testing instruments that monitor materials for cracks and corrosion.

Afterward, Mikaev moved into the Zvezda Service Module to conduct inspections with the instruments and then completed a round of computer software updates.

Kud-Sverchkov moved throughout the orbital complex during the day to photograph and video his crewmates working to document life aboard the space station.

 

On Sunday, March 22, the unpiloted Progress 94 cargo spacecraft, loaded with nearly three tons of food, fuel, and supplies, will lift off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 7:59 a.m. EDT.

After a two-day trip, Progress will dock to the Poisk moduleโ€™s space-facing port around 9:34 a.m. Tuesday, March 24. NASA will provide live coverage of both launch and docking NASA+, Amazon Prime, and the agencyโ€™s YouTube channel.

NASA begins contracting process to potentially relocate Space Shuttle Discovery to Houston

NASA is beginning the process of potentially relocating Space Shuttle Discovery from the Smithsonian in Virginia to Houston.

The federal space administration is requesting feedback from stakeholders and industry experts on a proposal for contract bids to move the historic spacecraft.

 

The proposal is a draft, not a finalized request for contract bids. NASA is asking for any feedback to tweak and clarify a final request for proposals.

The draft, which does not mention Discovery by name, would likely target the space shuttle. In 2025, Congress allocated funding in the Trump administration's โ€œOne Big Beautiful Bill Actโ€ to relocate Discovery from Virginia to the Space Center Houston, a nonprofit near NASAโ€™s Johnson Space Center.

 

Representatives from NASA, the Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston did not immediately return request for comment Friday.

"My law authorizing and funding the Space Shuttle Discovery's movement to Houston is being set into motion thanks to NASA's announcement, and I applaud [NASA] Administrator [Jared] Isaacman for keeping this process moving," Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican who has co-led the effort to relocate the space shuttle, said in a statement.

"Today is real progress in our mission to bring Discovery home, and I look forward to welcoming the shuttle home to Space City soon."

 

Discovery is one of just a few remaining vehicles from NASAโ€™s Space Shuttle Program.

Supporters of the move said its being at the Smithsonian meant the federal government had jurisdiction over its location, as opposed to the other space shuttles, which are located at nonprofit facilities across the country.

Last fall, the Smithsonian and NASA warned that moving Space Shuttle Discovery may "have to undergo significant disassembly to be moved" and that "disassembling the vehicle will destroy its historical value.โ€

Senators Cornyn and Ted Cruz, another Texas Republican, both pushed back against the Smithsonian, even calling for a Department of Justice investigation into the museum.

 

The draft proposal for contract bids includes a line that gives the federal government the right to "require intact transportation concepts that avoid disassembly, cutting, structural breakout, or permanent alteration of the item being transported" because of the "national significance" of the artifact.

"When such requirements are identified in a task order," the draft reads, "Contractors shall demonstrate how their approach preserves artifact condition and prevents transport-induced damage to structural hard points, exterior surfaces, thermal protection systems, or other historically significant features."

 

Technicians and advocates criticizing the potential move have cited Discovery's thermal protection system (TPS) as susceptible to damage.

Each spacecraft has a TPS that keeps it from withstanding immense heat โ€” as much as 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit โ€” when it reenters the Earth's atmosphere.

โ€œItโ€™s cutting-edge technology,โ€ Olga Bannova, a professor at the University of Houston who researches space architecture, told Houston Public Media last fall.

โ€œWithout it, the shuttle program wouldnโ€™t happen, right? It wouldnโ€™t be successful. So, itโ€™s an absolutely critical component.โ€

 

The draft also includes a requirement that any successful contractor should come up with an Artifact Protection Plan, "describing environmental protection systems, protective coverings, corrosion protection measures, vibration mitigation methods, contamination control procedures, and handling precautions necessary to protect historically significant aerospace artifacts during transportation operations."

The โ€œOne Big Beautiful Bill Actโ€ was signed into law in July, allocating $85 million to move Discovery. Some critics of the deal, including Democratic Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine of Virginia and Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, the latter of whom flew Discovery as an astronaut, have called for the Senate Appropriations Committee to block that funding.

 

In December, Isaacman, newly sworn in as NASA administrator at the time, cast some doubt on the prospects of relocating Discovery.

โ€œMy job now is to make sure that we can undertake such a transportation within the budget dollars that we have available and of course most importantly ensuring the safety of the vehicle,โ€ he said.

โ€œAnd if we canโ€™t do that, you know what, weโ€™ve got spacecraft that are going around the moon with Artemis II, III, IV, and V. One way or another, we are going to make sure the Johnson Space Center gets their historic spacecraft right where it belongs.โ€

WASHINGTON โ€” Navy Chief Petty Officer Shannon Mary Kent wasnโ€™t supposed to be in Syria.

 

Last year, the 35-year-old mother of two was slated to attend a clinical psychology doctoral program near Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

 

But an obscure Navy rule and a previous bout of cancer derailed those plans and led to her fifth combat deployment instead. She was killed less than two months later.

 

Now, her family wants to finish the fight started by Kent to undo the regulation.

 

โ€œThe regulation still hasnโ€™t been fixed and thatโ€™s something weโ€™re working on now,โ€ said Joe Kent, 38, her husband and father to their two children. โ€œWeโ€™d like to change it in her honor.โ€

 

Shannon Kent, along with 18 others, including another U.S. servicemember, a Defense Intelligence Agency civilian and a Defense Department contractor, were killed Jan. 16 by a suicide bomber at a restaurant in the Syrian city of Manbij. She was the first female U.S. servicemember killed in Syria since the U.S.-led coalitionโ€™s campaign against Islamic State began there in late 2014.

 

Kent was part of a small, secretive cryptologic intelligence community. She was based out of Fort Meade, Md., and part of the Navyโ€™s Cryptologic Warfare Activity 66, a unit within Cryptologic Warfare Group 6 that focuses on national, strategic and tactical level intelligence, military officials have said.

 

โ€œShe was doing intelligence legwork. They most certainly were not going out to lunch,โ€ Joe Kent, a retired Green Beret warrant officer, said of his wifeโ€™s last moments. โ€œThey wanted to run down every last bit of ISIS.โ€

 

Kent was due to return to the United States by April. She had hoped to attend Officer Development School in June, followed by her postponed academic plans as part of her commissioning program in August.

 

Last year, the Navy essentially disqualified Kent from pursuing her doctoral studies because she previously had thyroid cancer.

 

โ€œIf we are healthy enough to deploy worldwide, why are we not healthy enough to pursue officer programs?โ€ Shannon Kent wrote in an April 2018 letter to the then-chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the late Arizona Republican John McCain, who died in August.

 

Joe Kent remains stunned at the Navyโ€™s denial.

 

โ€œIt is pretty unbelievable she was considered physically fit to be deployable and โ€ฆ for a special operation in Syria, but not for a classroom to be a psychologist,โ€ he said.

 

Last week, Kentโ€™s family wrote to Adm. William Moran, vice chief of naval operations, to ask for his help to change the rule that they contend has blocked some enlisted personnel from becoming officers.

 

The family met Moran at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware when Shannonโ€™s remains were returned Jan. 19 from overseas. Kent is slated to be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia in the coming weeks.

 

โ€œBefore she is laid to her final rest, Chief Kentโ€™s family requests that you make this change happen,โ€ her father-in-law, Christopher Kent, wrote Moran on the familyโ€™s behalf in a Jan. 24 letter.

 

The Navy said the regulation is under review, but no final decision has been made.

 

โ€œThe Navy mourns the loss of a great sailor and offers condolences to her family,โ€ said Lt. Cmdr. Shawn Eklund, a Navy spokesman. โ€œThe office of the vice chief of naval operations did receive correspondence from her family and has asked the chief of navy personnel to review the regulation regarding the physical examination standards for enlisted sailors seeking a commission.โ€

The VICTUS DIEM exercise was comprised of two stages: a tabletop exercise (TTX) demonstration of a rapid space vehicle processing timeline in late 2025, and a rapid launch Field Training Exercise (FTX) in early 2026.

The rapid payload processing TTX demonstrated spacecraft arrival operations, checkouts, mating, and encapsulation which were completed in under twelve hours.

The rapid launch FTX executed a 36-hour simulation to practice and advance responsive launch protocols required to execute a TacRS space mission within a threat scenario.

 

VICTUS DIEM successes came as the result of direct collaboration with Space Launch Delta 30 (SLD 30) and Space Accessโ€™s Rocket Systems Launch Program (RSLP) throughout the various components of the exercise.

โ€œAt the Western Range and SLD 30, we play an important role in supporting these exercises,โ€ said USSF Col. James T. Horne, III, SLD 30 commander and director of the Western Launch and Test Range.

โ€œWe did the tabletop exercise to establish the command relationships between the various entities that have to execute the mission.

We set that up like a Joint Task Force, leveraging the way we conduct combat operations to work through all the relationships so that we can go from an urgent need to liftoff quickly.โ€

The collective efforts throughout VICTUS DIEM facilitated the relationships necessary to further develop the TacRS program.

SpaceXโ€™s Falcon 9 is targeting the launch of 29 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

Rocket Lab launches private Japanese 'Strix' satellite

Rocket Lab launched an Earth-observing radar satellite for the Japanese company Synspective on Friday (March 20).

 

An Electron rocket topped with one of Synspective's Strix satellites lifted off from Rocket Lab's New Zealand site on Friday at 2:10 p.m. EDT (1810 GMT; 7:10 a.m. on March 21 local New Zealand time), on a mission called "Eight Days a Week."

 

Friday's launch is the eighth that Rocket Lab has conducted for Synspective, which helps explain the mission name.

 

The Tokyo-based company is building "a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging constellation over Japan that provides data for urban development planning, construction and infrastructure monitoring and disaster response," Rocket Lab wrote in a mission description.

 

Rocket Lab has been the sole launch provider to date for the Strix constellation, whose first satellite went up in 2020. ("Strix," in case you were wondering, is a widespread genus of owls.) Synspective has booked another 20 Electron launches, including "Eight Days a Week," to finishing assembling the constellation by 2029, according to Rocket Lab.

 

"Eight Days a Week" is the 77th launch to date for the 59-foot-tall (18-meter-tall) Electron, which debuted with a test flight in May 2017.

 

Rocket Lab has also launched seven missions with HASTE, a suborbital version of Electron that allows customers to test hypersonic technologies in the space environment.

 

Payload deployment of the StriX satellite occurred about 50 minutes after launch, placing the spacecraft in low Earth orbit.

Connecticut Democrats recently rushed through an emergency anti-fraud law requiring bottle redemption centers to collect a copy of a personโ€™s driverโ€™s license when they cash in more than 1,000 cans or bottles in a day โ€” a document demand that Republicans say undercuts the partyโ€™s attacks on voter-ID rules.

Earlier this month, an emergency certification bill, SB 299, was introduced by top Democratic leaders in the state's legislature. It was later passed in both chambers in late February and was signed by Gov. Ned Lamont, a Democrat, on March 3.

It requires people wishing to recycle cans for money to present a copy of their driver's license, put in place because the state has had issues with non-residents crossing their border to take advantage of it's higher return rate of 10 cents a can instead of five cents. The issue was reportedly causing the state to lose significant revenue.

Meanwhile, the state still does not require its residents to present a driver's license, or some other form of formal identification. Instead, residents wishing to vote simply have to attest, under penalty of the law, that they are a citizen of the United States.

Additionally, both of Connecticut's senators, Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., recently voted against advancing the SAVE Act earlier this week, which Republicans introduced to pass stricter photo-ID requirements for voting in federal elections, including a national proof-of-citizenship requirement for anyone wishing to register to vote.

Nearly 300 Ukrainian drones shot down overnight โ€“ MOD

A total of 283 Ukrainian fixed-wing kamikaze drones have been shot down by air defenses overnight, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

In recent weeks, the Ukrainian military has ramped up its long-range attacks on targets in Russia. Many of the incoming unmanned aircraft have been intercepted while heading towards Moscow and its suburbs.

 

The latest drone barrage was intercepted across multiple regions, including Bryansk, Smolensk, Kaluga, Belgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, Volgograd, Tula, Ryazan, Kursk, Saratov, Samara, Tatarstan, Crimea, and Moscow Region, according to the Russian military.

Earlier on Saturday, Saratov Governor Roman Busargin said the Ukrainian drone barrage had inflicted minor damage on residential houses in Engels, the city located across the Volga River from the regional capital.

 

Several houses in Engels had their windows partially broken. There were no casualties, according to the preliminary evaluation. All the emergency services are working at the scene,โ€ the governor stated.

Later in the day, the defense ministry reported that they had shot down an additional 54 drones across Russiaโ€™s western and southwestern territories.

 

Ukraine has routinely attacked Russia using UAVs in recent months, targeting critical infrastructure, manufacturing facilities, and residential areas in what Moscow has described as desperate โ€œterrorist attacksโ€ meant to compensate for the frontline setbacks Kievโ€™s military has been suffering.

Russia has retaliated with a long-range strike campaign of its own, targeting dual-use infrastructure, including power grid facilities, and military sites in Ukraine.

Moscow has maintained that it never targets purely civilian sites.

Kiev has the means to round up people evading the military draft, tracking them through banking transactions and use of digital services, Ukrainian lawmaker Solomia Bobrovskaya has suggested.

According to estimates recently voiced by newly appointed Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov, around two million potential recruits were on a wanted list for draft evasion, while some 200,000 active-duty troops had gone AWOL.

The Ukrainian draft system has long needed an overhaul, Borovskaya told the Telegraf outlet in an interview on Thursday, arguing that forced mobilization efforts and punitive measures had effectively stopped working.

 

โ€œUnfortunately, the parliament passed a law taking a harsher approach and increasing criminalization for deserters. We raised prison terms from 8 to 10 years, effectively sentencing them to longer terms than murderers or terrorists.

My point is the โ€˜stickโ€™ policy alone is not working,โ€ Bobrovskaya stated.

 

The authorities should take a more flexible approach to deserters, the lawmaker suggested, examining the reasons behind soldiers going AWOL, casualties sustained by their units, and so on.

At the same time, the MP suggested that Kiev actually has the means to track those citizens who had gone into hiding to escape the draft. โ€œI believe itโ€™s possible. Everyone uses information, electronic, and financial services and transactions,โ€ Bobrovskaya stated.

 

The compulsory military drive, enforced by Kiev to compensate for combat losses, has grown increasingly chaotic and violent over the years.

The process has become colloquially known as โ€˜busification,โ€™ a term describing the process of violently shoving recruits into minibuses commonly used by enlistment officials.

 

Numerous videos circulating online show draft officers brawling with potential recruits and onlookers in the streets, breaking into vehicles and homes, and on some occasions, even resorting to the use of military-grade weapons in their standoffs with civilians.

According to estimates voiced by Ukrainian lawmaker Vadim Ivchenko, the current recruiting scheme โ€œgives approximately 8-10%โ€ of the personnel needed by the army despite all the violence.

Moreover, fewer than one in ten Ukrainians are currently joining the military voluntarily, Ivchenko claimed, arguing that it was impossible to abandon forced mobilization practices.

Ukraineโ€™s Air Defense Forces successfully intercepted 148 of 154 Russian drones in a large-scale attack that began Friday evening, March 20, Ukrinform reported

 

The assault involved multiple drone types โ€“ primarily Shahed-type UAVs alongside Gerbera and Italmas variants โ€“ launched from five locations across Russian territory and occupied Crimea. About 90 of the 154 drones were Shahed aircraft.

 

Ukrainian aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups coordinated the defense.

 

Still, five drones struck four locations, with debris scattered across seven additional sites as of 8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 21.

 

The attack targeted power facilities across Ukraine.

 

In the Chernihiv region, a strike on a facility in the Nizhyn district early Saturday left most of the region without electricity. Power engineers began emergency repairs, with critical infrastructure switching to backup sources.

 

In the Mykolaiv region, overnight attacks caused temporary outages in several settlements, though power was restored by morning. The region faced a similar assault on March 19.

Iraq has declared force majeure on all oilfields developed by foreign oil companies after military operations disrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and halted most of the country's crude exports, three energy officials told Reuters.

 

Basra oil production was cut by approximately 70%, from 3.3 million barrels per day to around 900,000 barrels per day.

 

Force majeure declared

Iraq's Oil Ministry sent a letter dated March 17, seen by Reuters, stating that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely affected by "unprecedented military activity," causing storage capacity to reach its limits.

 

"The international partners were unable to nominate tankers to lift crude, preventing exports despite the state oil company SOMO being ready to load shipments," the letter said.

 

โ€œBased on the situation, the ministry ordered a full shutdown of production at affected concession areas, with no compensation arising from the measure under contract terms," the letter noted.

 

The ministry said the scale-back would be reviewed periodically depending on regional developments, and invited international companies to urgent talks to agree on essential operations, costs, and staffing under force majeure conditions.

 

Basra output slashed from 3.3M to 900,000 BPD

Iraq's Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul Ghani said crude production at Basra Oil Company has been cut to 900,000 barrels per day from 3.3 million barrels per day after exports from the country's southern ports were halted.

"The produced quantities are being directed to operate domestic refineries," the ministry said.

 

The drop in production and exports is set to strain Iraq's already fragile finances, as the state relies on crude sales for nearly all public spending and more than 90% of its income.

 

Ceyhan route resumed, oil prices surge

On Wednesday, Iraq's North Oil Company announced the resumption of oil exports through the Turkish port of Ceyhan after shipments had been suspended since 2023,as Baghdad seeks alternative export routes amid mounting risks to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

A building in Dimona collapsed as a result of an impact from an Iranian munition on Saturday evening after sirens sounded in southern and northern Israel.

Israeli media reported that the shrapnel potentially hit a school in the southern Israeli city.

Magen David Adom teams are treating some 20 people with mild injuries at various locations in Dimona. Notably, a 10-year-old child is in moderate condition.

The Bazan refinery in Haifa Bay has long been a source of environmental concern. The latest round of Iranian missile fire has now placed those concerns in a wartime context.

An Iranian missile strike near Israelโ€™s largest oil refinery ended without a hazardous leak, but for Marcelo Sternberg, professor of climate change ecology at the School of Plant Sciences and Food Security at Tel Aviv University, the outcome should not be mistaken for reassurance.

โ€œItโ€™s actually a time bomb,โ€ he told The Media Line, warning that the real danger lies not only in what happened, but in what nearly did.

Israelโ€™s foreign intelligence agency, the Mossad, called on Saturday for Iranians with access to information on the Islamic Republicโ€™s nuclear industry to contact it.

The Mossadโ€™s call comes after Iran claimed that US and Israeli strikes had hit the Natanz nuclear facility earlier in the day. The IDF subsequently told The Jerusalem Post that it was not aware of an Israeli strike on the facility.

Nevertheless, destroying Iranโ€™s ability to approach nuclear capability is one of Jerusalem and Washingtonโ€™s goals in their campaign against Tehran.

Robert Mueller, the former FBI director for more than a decade who later served as special counsel in the investigation into Russiaโ€™s interference in the 2016 election, died on Friday, according to two people familiar with the matter. He was 81.

 

The cause of death was not immediately known, but Mueller had been suffering from Parkinsonโ€™s disease for years, the people said.

The United States has deployed multiple MQ-9 drones alongside around 200 troops to Nigeria to provide intelligence and training support to the Nigerian military in its ongoing fight against insurgents across the northern region.

According to Reuters on Saturday, the deployment was requested by Nigerian authorities to help identify, track, and respond to terrorist threats in the region.

โ€œWe see this as a shared security threat,โ€ a U.S. defence official told Reuters, underscoring that the mission is limited to intelligence collection and advisory support.

 

Major General Samaila Uba, director of defence information at Nigeriaโ€™s Defence Headquarters, confirmed that U.S. forces are operating from Bauchi airfield in the northeast.

โ€œThis support builds on the newly established U.S.-Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, which continues to deliver actionable intelligence to our field commanders.

Our U.S. partners remain in a strictly non-combat role, enabling operations led by Nigerian authorities,โ€ he said.

 

The MQ-9 drones, sometimes called Reaper drones, are capable of loitering at high altitude for more than 27 hours and can perform both intelligence gathering and strike missions.

The US and Nigerian officials clarified that the aircraft currently in Nigeria are being used exclusively for surveillance. โ€œOur US forces are helping Nigeria identify, track and respond to terrorist threats,โ€ Uba said, without elaborating on specific operations.

 

The deployment comes amid escalating violence in Nigeriaโ€™s northeast and northwest. On March 16, suicide bombers attacked a garrison town in the northeast, underscoring the continued threat from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

โ€œWe continue to assess that these organisations will seek opportunistic targets and may attempt to demonstrate relevance through high-visibility attacks,โ€ Uba said.

 

The Nigerian military said the duration of the current U.S. deployment will be determined in agreement with its American partners.

The mission underscores an intensifying focus on intelligence-sharing and capacity-building in response to evolving insurgent threats across northern Nigeria.

 

The United States deployment follows American airstrikes on Christmas Day, ordered under President Donald Trump, targeting ISIS-linked terrorist elements in northwest Nigeria.

The Federal Government confirmed that the strikes were part of a coordinated security partnership with international allies aimed at combating terrorism and violent extremism.

 

In February, PUNCH Online reported that the United States had deployed roughly 200 troops to Nigeria to provide training and operational support to the countryโ€™s military in its fight against Islamist militants.

An American military official said that the deployment came weeks after President Trump criticised Nigeria for failing to protect Christians from terrorist attacks.
