Nearly 300 Ukrainian drones shot down overnight – MOD

Updated 21 Mar, 2026 16:00

A total of 283 Ukrainian fixed-wing kamikaze drones have been shot down by air defenses overnight, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

In recent weeks, the Ukrainian military has ramped up its long-range attacks on targets in Russia. Many of the incoming unmanned aircraft have been intercepted while heading towards Moscow and its suburbs.

The latest drone barrage was intercepted across multiple regions, including Bryansk, Smolensk, Kaluga, Belgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, Volgograd, Tula, Ryazan, Kursk, Saratov, Samara, Tatarstan, Crimea, and Moscow Region, according to the Russian military.

Earlier on Saturday, Saratov Governor Roman Busargin said the Ukrainian drone barrage had inflicted minor damage on residential houses in Engels, the city located across the Volga River from the regional capital.

Several houses in Engels had their windows partially broken. There were no casualties, according to the preliminary evaluation. All the emergency services are working at the scene,” the governor stated.

Later in the day, the defense ministry reported that they had shot down an additional 54 drones across Russia’s western and southwestern territories.

Ukraine has routinely attacked Russia using UAVs in recent months, targeting critical infrastructure, manufacturing facilities, and residential areas in what Moscow has described as desperate “terrorist attacks” meant to compensate for the frontline setbacks Kiev’s military has been suffering.

Russia has retaliated with a long-range strike campaign of its own, targeting dual-use infrastructure, including power grid facilities, and military sites in Ukraine.

Moscow has maintained that it never targets purely civilian sites.

Ukraine could force 2 million draft dodgers ‘out of the shadows’ – MP

Updated 20 Mar, 2026 22:15

Kiev has the means to round up people evading the military draft, tracking them through banking transactions and use of digital services, Ukrainian lawmaker Solomia Bobrovskaya has suggested.

According to estimates recently voiced by newly appointed Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov, around two million potential recruits were on a wanted list for draft evasion, while some 200,000 active-duty troops had gone AWOL.

The Ukrainian draft system has long needed an overhaul, Borovskaya told the Telegraf outlet in an interview on Thursday, arguing that forced mobilization efforts and punitive measures had effectively stopped working.

“Unfortunately, the parliament passed a law taking a harsher approach and increasing criminalization for deserters. We raised prison terms from 8 to 10 years, effectively sentencing them to longer terms than murderers or terrorists.

My point is the ‘stick’ policy alone is not working,” Bobrovskaya stated.

The authorities should take a more flexible approach to deserters, the lawmaker suggested, examining the reasons behind soldiers going AWOL, casualties sustained by their units, and so on.

At the same time, the MP suggested that Kiev actually has the means to track those citizens who had gone into hiding to escape the draft. “I believe it’s possible. Everyone uses information, electronic, and financial services and transactions,” Bobrovskaya stated.

The compulsory military drive, enforced by Kiev to compensate for combat losses, has grown increasingly chaotic and violent over the years.

The process has become colloquially known as ‘busification,’ a term describing the process of violently shoving recruits into minibuses commonly used by enlistment officials.

Numerous videos circulating online show draft officers brawling with potential recruits and onlookers in the streets, breaking into vehicles and homes, and on some occasions, even resorting to the use of military-grade weapons in their standoffs with civilians.

According to estimates voiced by Ukrainian lawmaker Vadim Ivchenko, the current recruiting scheme “gives approximately 8-10%” of the personnel needed by the army despite all the violence.

Moreover, fewer than one in ten Ukrainians are currently joining the military voluntarily, Ivchenko claimed, arguing that it was impossible to abandon forced mobilization practices.

Ukrainian Air Defense Repels Massive Russian Drone Assault

March 21, 2026, 12:17 pm

Ukraine’s Air Defense Forces successfully intercepted 148 of 154 Russian drones in a large-scale attack that began Friday evening, March 20, Ukrinform reported

The assault involved multiple drone types – primarily Shahed-type UAVs alongside Gerbera and Italmas variants – launched from five locations across Russian territory and occupied Crimea. About 90 of the 154 drones were Shahed aircraft.

Ukrainian aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups coordinated the defense.

Still, five drones struck four locations, with debris scattered across seven additional sites as of 8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 21.

The attack targeted power facilities across Ukraine.

In the Chernihiv region, a strike on a facility in the Nizhyn district early Saturday left most of the region without electricity. Power engineers began emergency repairs, with critical infrastructure switching to backup sources.

In the Mykolaiv region, overnight attacks caused temporary outages in several settlements, though power was restored by morning. The region faced a similar assault on March 19.

No casualties were reported.

Expert warns Haifa refinery is ‘time bomb’ despite limited damage in Iranian strike

The Bazan refinery in Haifa Bay has long been a source of environmental concern. The latest round of Iranian missile fire has now placed those concerns in a wartime context.

An Iranian missile strike near Israel’s largest oil refinery ended without a hazardous leak, but for Marcelo Sternberg, professor of climate change ecology at the School of Plant Sciences and Food Security at Tel Aviv University, the outcome should not be mistaken for reassurance.

“It’s actually a time bomb,” he told The Media Line, warning that the real danger lies not only in what happened, but in what nearly did.

The Bazan refinery in Haifa Bay, which sits close to densely populated neighborhoods, has long been a source of environmental concern.

The latest round of missile fire has now placed those concerns in a wartime context. Prof. Sternberg emphasized that, according to available information, “the damage was not major,” adding that “it’s actually very lucky that the main refinery of petrol in Israel was not very highly damaged.”

But that sense of relief, he suggested, is fragile and temporary, particularly given the facility's strategic importance.

Israel's Mossad calls on Iranians to share information on Islamic Republic's nuclear industry

“If you have access to information in the field of the nuclear industry, talk to us,” the Mossad wrote on its Persian-language Telegram channel. “With us, your future is guaranteed."

Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, the Mossad, called on Saturday for Iranians with access to information on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear industry to contact it.

“If you have access to information in the field of the nuclear industry, talk to us,” the Mossad wrote on its Persian-language Telegram channel. “With us, your future is guaranteed. Contact us through a secure channel.”

The Mossad’s call comes after Iran claimed that US and Israeli strikes had hit the Natanz nuclear facility earlier in the day. The IDF subsequently told The Jerusalem Post that it was not aware of an Israeli strike on the facility.

Nevertheless, destroying Iran’s ability to approach nuclear capability is one of Jerusalem and Washington’s goals in their campaign against Tehran.

At Rishon Lezion impact site, Katz says Iran's strikes a 'war crime'

Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Saturday that Israel would continue its campaign against Iran for as long as necessary, stressing that the operation would not be halted by the upcoming Passover holiday.

Talking to reporters at a missile impact site in Rishon Lezion, Katz said Israel’s ability to press ahead depends in large part on the resilience of the civilian home front, and said the fighting would continue until its objectives are met.

“The strength of the home front is what allows us to keep going, and we will continue until the objectives are achieved,” he said.

Katz said 11 impact sites had been identified in the city, and accused Iran of using weapons that amount to a war crime. Katz added that such conduct was consistent with what he described as the behavior of a terror regime.

IRGC aerospace chief faces internal criticism over battlefield absence

Revolutionary Guard Aerospace Force commander Majid Mousavi has come under criticism from senior IRGC officials for being absent during ongoing clashes and leaving his forces without leadership, sources with knowledge of the matter told Iran International.

The main criticism, according to the sources speaking to Iran International on condition of anonymity, centers on the commander’s lack of presence on the ground at a time when operational pressure has significantly intensified since the start of the war in late February.

Sources say that as casualties have mounted within the Aerospace Force—responsible for missile and drone launches—Mousavi’s absence has been cited as a key factor contributing to the deteriorating situation.

Aerospace Force operators have described the operational conditions as highly dangerous, with each missile launch mission carrying extreme risk and, in some cases, likened to near-suicidal operations, according to the informed sources.

At the same time, sources say families of some personnel have filed complaints with senior IRGC authorities, saying that the commander did not maintain an effective presence under dangerous conditions and that forces were effectively left without adequate support.

Iran threatens to disrupt Bab al-Mandeb Strait if US invades Kharg Island

Any US military action against Iran’s Kharg Island could trigger a sweeping escalation, including disruption of security at the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait as well as further attacks on regional energy facilities, the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News said citing a military source.

The source said that if Washington follows through on threats to invade the strategic oil hub, Iran would respond with measures “unprecedented” compared to developments over the past three weeks of conflict.

The source warned that targeting other critical waterways, including the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea, is among the options under consideration by Iran and its allied forces, suggesting the confrontation could expand well beyond the Strait of Hormuz.

The source said an attack on Kharg could temporarily disrupt Iran’s oil production and trigger retaliatory actions against energy infrastructure across the region, escalating risks for global markets.

He also said that US forces would be unable to secure the island in the event of an attack and could face losses “unprecedented since World War II,” underscoring the potential scale of escalation.

US deploys drones, 200 troops to Nigeria for intelligence support — Report

March 21, 2026 2:43 pm

The United States has deployed multiple MQ-9 drones alongside around 200 troops to Nigeria to provide intelligence and training support to the Nigerian military in its ongoing fight against insurgents across the northern region.

The operation is strictly focused on surveillance and advisory support, with no US personnel embedded in frontline units and no drone airstrikes being conducted.

“The U.S. military has multiple MQ-9 drones operating in Nigeria alongside 200 troops to provide training and intelligence support to the military,” U.S. and Nigerian officials told Reuters.

According to Reuters on Saturday, the deployment was requested by Nigerian authorities to help identify, track, and respond to terrorist threats in the region.

“We see this as a shared security threat,” a U.S. defence official told Reuters, underscoring that the mission is limited to intelligence collection and advisory support.

Major General Samaila Uba, director of defence information at Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, confirmed that U.S. forces are operating from Bauchi airfield in the northeast.

“This support builds on the newly established U.S.-Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, which continues to deliver actionable intelligence to our field commanders.

Our U.S. partners remain in a strictly non-combat role, enabling operations led by Nigerian authorities,” he said.

The MQ-9 drones, sometimes called Reaper drones, are capable of loitering at high altitude for more than 27 hours and can perform both intelligence gathering and strike missions.

The US and Nigerian officials clarified that the aircraft currently in Nigeria are being used exclusively for surveillance. “Our US forces are helping Nigeria identify, track and respond to terrorist threats,” Uba said, without elaborating on specific operations.

The deployment comes amid escalating violence in Nigeria’s northeast and northwest. On March 16, suicide bombers attacked a garrison town in the northeast, underscoring the continued threat from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

“We continue to assess that these organisations will seek opportunistic targets and may attempt to demonstrate relevance through high-visibility attacks,” Uba said.

The Nigerian military said the duration of the current U.S. deployment will be determined in agreement with its American partners.

The mission underscores an intensifying focus on intelligence-sharing and capacity-building in response to evolving insurgent threats across northern Nigeria.

The United States deployment follows American airstrikes on Christmas Day, ordered under President Donald Trump, targeting ISIS-linked terrorist elements in northwest Nigeria.

The Federal Government confirmed that the strikes were part of a coordinated security partnership with international allies aimed at combating terrorism and violent extremism.

In February, PUNCH Online reported that the United States had deployed roughly 200 troops to Nigeria to provide training and operational support to the country’s military in its fight against Islamist militants.

An American military official said that the deployment came weeks after President Trump criticised Nigeria for failing to protect Christians from terrorist attacks.

The report noted that the troops were expected to strengthen Nigeria’s counterterrorism capacity, particularly through training programs and intelligence support.

White House Unleashes Coast-To-Coast Crackdown On Rogue Drones, With $100K Hits

March 21, 2026

Federal officials are moving from politely worded advisories to a far tougher stance on illegal drone flights, rolling out new rules, congressional penalties and fresh counter-drone units to track down reckless or malicious pilots.

The stepped-up response is aimed at protecting stadiums, critical infrastructure and major 2026 events, and it raises the pressure on everyone from weekend hobbyists to commercial operators.

What The Task Force Ordered

The Federal Task Force to Restore American Airspace Sovereignty came out of an executive order signed last June, with a mandate to coordinate detection, geofencing and training across federal agencies and to recommend both technical fixes and rule changes for unmanned aircraft systems.

The order also tells agencies to publish NOTAMs and temporary flight restrictions in formats that work with drone geofencing tools and to pursue creation of a national counter-UAS training center, according to The White House.

FAA Has Ramped Up Enforcement

The Federal Aviation Administration says it has tightened its enforcement posture and now treats operations that endanger the public, bust restricted airspace or support other criminal activity as clear triggers for formal legal action.

In recent years the agency has brought civil penalty cases and certificate actions, and it is warning operators that fines and license suspensions are firmly on the table under the updated policy, per the FAA.

Congress, The $100K Figure And Who It Hits

On Capitol Hill, last year’s legislative work and current bills have expanded counter-UAS authorities and layered in new enforcement tools.

Language in the SAFER SKIES / NDAA package authorizes civil fines of up to $100,000 for unauthorized counter-UAS actions and ratchets up penalties when drones are used to facilitate other crimes, as detailed on Congress.gov.

DHS Gears Up For America250 And The World Cup

The Department of Homeland Security has launched a Program Executive Office for Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Counter-UAS and is closing in on a roughly $115 million purchase of detection and mitigation tools designed to secure venues for America250 and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to reporting by Nextgov.

FEMA grant programs and other federal funding streams are being tapped to put detection and response systems in place across host jurisdictions.

Military And Interagency Guidance

The Pentagon’s Joint Interagency Task Force-401 has issued guidance and planning materials to help military installations and public venues shore up defenses against small UAS threats, pushing for layered protection and a whole-of-government playbook.

The task force documents highlight detection, attribution and advance planning for mass-gathering sites, according to CUAS Hub.

What This Means For Local Pilots And Venues

For hobbyists and commercial drone operators, the practical checklist has not changed but the risk of ignoring it has: comply with Remote ID, register your drone, review NOTAMs and temporary flight restrictions, and get waivers for any restricted operations. Local event organizers and property owners should be ready for closer coordination with federal teams and quicker deployment of detection gear.

Headlines like the Dallas Express portrayal of a “zero-tolerance” crackdown reflect the sharper tone in some agency and military messaging, although actual legal outcomes still hinge on specific statutes and prosecutorial calls.

The emerging system blends administrative, civil and criminal tools.

FAA enforcement can lead to civil fines and certificate actions, Congress has directed stiffer sentencing when drones are used to commit other crimes, and the SAFER SKIES language authorizes civil enforcement and $100,000 fines for unauthorized counter-UAS moves.

It is important to note that the $100,000 figure in the statutes targets certain unauthorized mitigation efforts and specific statutory violations, not every stray recreational flight, according to the text on Congress.gov.

We will keep tracking agency rulemakings and on-the-ground deployments and will update this article as new federal guidance and implementing regulations come out.
