But power grid asset owners and operators have “growing concern” around “unmanned aircraft systems,” or UAS, attacks and their “ability to protect critical assets and infrastructure,” the North American Electric Reliability Corp. said in a report this week.

The report was an assessment of NERC’s 8th biennial electric grid security exercise — GridEx VIII — held in November to evaluate grid security, including the resilience of the North American electric system in the face of a coordinated attack from a nation-state adversary.

Hundreds of organizations stress-tested emergency preparedness protocols and game-planned responses to hypothetical scenarios. In one of those scenarios, multiple UAS targeted a switchyard at a nuclear generating station and a transformer station.

The report said participants noted that there is a “variety of guidance” from different government agencies on drones regarding what laws and regulations apply to detection, and what technologies can be legally deployed.

Collaboration between industry and government partners would allow for a better understanding of the concerns that [asset owner or operators] maintain related to [drones] and how the government can support [asset owner or operators] during impending and active threats,” it said.

“Currently, utilities leverage detection capabilities to establish baseline traffic near critical assets but are limited to engaging with [drones] only after they are safely on the ground, which is often too late.”

Drones have become ubiquitous in modern warfare, from Ukraine to the Middle East. The United States military is finding drones a difficult threat to counter — and even well-funded electric utilities do not have the budget of the U.S. military.

Democrat NJ Gov. Mikie Sherrill Signs Law Banning ICE Agents from Wearing Masks, DHS Vows Not to Comply

Democrat New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed legislation this week banning law enforcement, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, from wearing masks, leaving then vulnerable to targeted harassment.

The governor signed SCS for S3114 and 3216/A1743, which, according the March 25 press release, “Requires law enforcement officer[s] to reveal facial identity during certain public interactions and to present sufficient identification prior to arresting or detaining person.”

In a statement describing the bills she signed, Sherrill said, “These bills underscore that here in New Jersey, we still follow the Constitution and uphold the rule of law.”

“My focus as governor remains on keeping the public safe,” she continued before taking a dig at President Donald Trump, describing ICE agents as “untrained” and “unaccountable.”

“As we’ve seen across the country, Donald Trump’s untrained, unaccountable, masked ICE agents are putting people in danger,” she said.

“That’s why in New Jersey, we are protecting our communities — strengthening our protections, banning ICE agents from wearing masks, and protecting residents’ privacy from federal overreach,” Sherrill added.

This has remained a sticking point when it comes to the partial government shutdown as Democrats have demanded reforms to ICE, taking issue, specifically, with the use of masks.

“Senate Democrats want to ban ICE officers from wearing masks so their left-wing street militias can dox the officers and terrorize the officers’ wives and children at their homes,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) said on Wednesday, offering further perspective on day 40 of the Senate battle over funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

On Thursday the shutdown reached day 41.

A DHS spokesperson told NBC10 regarding the New Jersey law, “Sanctuary politicians attempting to ban our federal law enforcement from wearing masks is despicable and a flagrant attempt to endanger our officers.”

DHS made it clear that it will “not abide” by what it described as an “unconstitutional ban.”

“The Supremacy Clause makes it clear that New Jersey’s sanctuary politicians do not control federal law enforcement,” the spokesperson continued, describing the law as “irresponsible, reckless, and dangerous.”

The DHS spokesperson emphasized the importance of ICE agents wearing masks, reminding Americans that it protects them from targeted harassment, highlighting “a more than 1,300 percent increase in assaults, 3,300 percent increase in vehicular attacks, and an 8,000 percent increase in death threats against them.”

“ICE officers wear face coverings for one reason: to protect themselves and their families from real-world threats, including agitators,” DHS said. “The danger is not hypothetical.”

Judicial Watch’s Historic Day at the Supreme Court

Judicial Watch was at the Supreme Court on Monday fighting for a critical legal determination:Election Day is a day—not five days, not a week, not a month.

“This is the most important Supreme Court election integrity case in a generation,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “The pandemic spread of states counting late ballots received after Election Day is a flagrant violation of long-standing federal law that not only encourages voter fraud but also severely undermines public confidence in our elections. The Supreme Court now has a critical opportunity to restore a fundamental guardrail to the election process.”

More than fifteen states allow late-arriving ballots to be counted. Judicial Watch asked the Supreme Court to uphold a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, which struck down as unconstitutional a Mississippi law allowing election officials up to five days to count mail-in ballots received after Election Day. Mississippi appealed, arguing that late-arriving, postmarked ballots were permissible.

The original JW lawsuit, brought behalf of the Libertarian Party of Mississippi, was later consolidated with a similar challenge by the Republican National Committee and others. At the court on Monday, former U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement made the historic opening statement on behalf of Judicial Watch’s Libertarian Party client. “All agree that elections for federal office have to end on the day of the election specified by Congress,” Clement said. “…Nonetheless, Mississippi insists ballots can trickle in days or even weeks after Election Day.”

JW’s brief to the Supreme Court makes the case for a single Election Day. There is no historic foundation for counting ballots arriving after Election Day, JW notes, the opportunities for fraud are endless, and public confidence in elections is eroded.

“The whole point of the federal Election-Day statutes is to set a single uniform day for the election,” the brief notes. “Allowing ballots to trickle in days or weeks after Election Day is antithetical to that basic goal.”

Congress set an Election Day, not an Election Week or an Election Month. “Through the federal Election-Day statutes, Congress exercised its constitutional authority to set a uniform time for federal elections to occur. Text, historical practice, precedent, and common sense all demonstrate that those statutes set the deadline by which ballots must be submitted and received. Simply put, the ballot box closes on Election Day, and ballots that are not received until days or weeks after the date specified by Congress arrive after Election Day and should not be counted.”

It’s been a busy year for Judicial Watch at the Supreme Court. In January, the court granted standing in a historic case JW filed on behalf of Congressman Mike Bost and two presidential electors. The case challenges an Illinois law allowing the counting of ballots received up to fourteen days after the election.

Some election officials are not waiting. On Thursday, the New York Times reported that election administrators in some states had already begun “planning for a world where all ballots must arrive by Election Day.”

US President Donald Trump has singled out Australia while accusing a string of allies of failing to help secure the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The president continued his criticism of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who he said had offered to send aircraft carriers to help the US when the "war was already over".

"I said, 'Oh, that's wonderful. Thank you very much. Don't bother, we don't need it,'" the president said to a ripple of laughter in the room.

The aircraft offered by the UK were "toys compared to what we have," he added.

His criticism comes as the president insisted Iran should negotiate a deal, while also repeating threats that the US would be Iran's "worst nightmare" if it chose not to agree to the 15-point peace plan presented by the US earlier this week.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles rejected the president's characterisation of Australia's response to the Iran war.

The IDF could soon collapse if there is no solution to the shortage of manpower, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir warned in remarks during a security cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.

“I am raising 10 red flags before the IDF collapses into itself,” Zamir said during the cabinet meeting, The Jerusalem Post confirmed.

IDF sources also told the Post that there is tremendous concern due to the severe manpower shortage, especially amid the ongoing war.

Even in peacetime, Israel would still need more soldiers – not fewer – on the border in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank, the sources said.

Before Operation Roaring Lion, the government was rapidly advancing controversial legislation that was said to enforce haredi conscription.

Critics argued the proposed bill was a political measure intended to appease the haredi parties in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition and would not effectively enforce conscription.

Haredi draft bill 'set aside' amid war

Netanyahu announced at the beginning of Operation Roaring Lion that the draft bill would be “set aside” for unity reasons and would not be advanced during the war.

Opposition politicians sharply criticized the government in response to Zamir’s remarks, warning that the lack of preparedness and enforcement of haredi conscription could lead to a major security crisis in the country.

Members of the Yesh Atid Party sent a letter to Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairperson MK Boaz Bismuth, demanding that he convene an emergency session to discuss ways to expand the IDF's ranks.

The haredi draft bill was being advanced by Bismuth’s committee.

The Yesh Atid letter notes that the stalling of the haredi conscription is not a political dispute but a security danger that rises to the level of pikuach nefesh (a matter of saving life).

“After we have warned many times, it is no longer possible to ignore this. The chief of staff’s remarks point to an internal collapse within the IDF stemming from the lack of conscription and the burden on reservists,” the letter adds.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) stated that “In the next disaster, the government won’t be able to say ‘We didn’t know.’ It bears responsibility. This is on its head.”

Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman called to draft everyone and said that the government has become accustomed to ignoring warnings before a disaster, as he referenced the October 7 massacre.

Former prime minister Naftali Bennett also slammed the government. “What are you waiting for, for heaven’s sake?” he asked.

He added that a government dependent on Shas Party leader Arye Deri and United Torah Judaism leader Yitzhak Goldknopf “is incapable of providing security.”

Blue and White Party leader Benny Gantz said that while the government was promising to “change the Middle East” and win the war, it was promoting mass draft evasion and “doesn’t even ensure there will be soldiers to actually win.”

“You will not be able to sweep this disgrace under the rug; you will not be able to say ‘we didn’t know’ when the next disaster arrives,” he added.
