The issue has taken on new urgency recently. The Department of Homeland Security reportedly urged U.S. energy companies to increase security in response to potential threats from Iran, which has successfully used drones to target American military personnel and assets since the U.S. and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28.

 

But power grid asset owners and operators have “growing concern” around “unmanned aircraft systems,” or UAS, attacks and their “ability to protect critical assets and infrastructure,” the North American Electric Reliability Corp. said in a report this week.

 

The report was an assessment of NERC’s 8th biennial electric grid security exercise — GridEx VIII — held in November to evaluate grid security, including the resilience of the North American electric system in the face of a coordinated attack from a nation-state adversary.

 

Hundreds of organizations stress-tested emergency preparedness protocols and game-planned responses to hypothetical scenarios. In one of those scenarios, multiple UAS targeted a switchyard at a nuclear generating station and a transformer station.

 

The report said participants noted that there is a “variety of guidance” from different government agencies on drones regarding what laws and regulations apply to detection, and what technologies can be legally deployed.

 

Collaboration between industry and government partners would allow for a better understanding of the concerns that [asset owner or operators] maintain related to [drones] and how the government can support [asset owner or operators] during impending and active threats,” it said.

 

“Currently, utilities leverage detection capabilities to establish baseline traffic near critical assets but are limited to engaging with [drones] only after they are safely on the ground, which is often too late.”

 

Drones have become ubiquitous in modern warfare, from Ukraine to the Middle East. The United States military is finding drones a difficult threat to counter — and even well-funded electric utilities do not have the budget of the U.S. military.

Democrat New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed legislation this week banning law enforcement, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, from wearing masks, leaving then vulnerable to targeted harassment.

 

The governor signed SCS for S3114 and 3216/A1743, which, according the March 25 press release, “Requires law enforcement officer[s] to reveal facial identity during certain public interactions and to present sufficient identification prior to arresting or detaining person.”

 

In a statement describing the bills she signed, Sherrill said, “These bills underscore that here in New Jersey, we still follow the Constitution and uphold the rule of law.”

 

“My focus as governor remains on keeping the public safe,” she continued before taking a dig at President Donald Trump, describing ICE agents as “untrained” and “unaccountable.”

 

“As we’ve seen across the country, Donald Trump’s untrained, unaccountable, masked ICE agents are putting people in danger,” she said.

Petrol limits are HERE as Australia battles fuel crisis: How many fuel stations are running out

 

Motorists in major cities are now facing fuel limits at some petrol stations as shortages spread beyond regional areas.

 

Supply pressures that have plagued regional Australia's independent petrol stations for weeks are now washing into the country's urban markets.

 

Customers at a Shell-branded Viva station on Sydney's Northern Beaches were limited to 50 litres per vehicle, with jerry cans and external tanks banned due to shortages, The Australian reports.

 

The masthead reports that other city petrol stations are doing the same.

 

Energy Minister Chris Bowen has repeatedly insisted the supply issues are being driven by a sudden spike in demand caused by panic buying, and that rationing is not needed.

 

'We have as much fuel in Australia today as we had on the day Iran was attacked. We have had real issues, particularly in regional Australia, getting fuel to where demand has been very high,' Bowen said.

 

'We've seen very big spikes in demand. Some of that has been panic buying. Some people are trying to get ahead of expected price rises. Some farmers are stocking up, which is understandable.

 

'But the fact is, if demand suddenly jumps dramatically, whether it's for petrol, diesel or even toilet paper, supply chains come under pressure.'

Judicial Watch’s Historic Day at the Supreme Court

 

Judicial Watch was at the Supreme Court on Monday fighting for a critical legal determination:Election Day is a day—not five days, not a week, not a month.

 

“This is the most important Supreme Court election integrity case in a generation,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “The pandemic spread of states counting late ballots received after Election Day is a flagrant violation of long-standing federal law that not only encourages voter fraud but also severely undermines public confidence in our elections. The Supreme Court now has a critical opportunity to restore a fundamental guardrail to the election process.”

 

More than fifteen states allow late-arriving ballots to be counted. Judicial Watch asked the Supreme Court to uphold a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, which struck down as unconstitutional a Mississippi law allowing election officials up to five days to count mail-in ballots received after Election Day. Mississippi appealed, arguing that late-arriving, postmarked ballots were permissible.

 

The original JW lawsuit, brought behalf of the Libertarian Party of Mississippi, was later consolidated with a similar challenge by the Republican National Committee and others. At the court on Monday, former U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement made the historic opening statement on behalf of Judicial Watch’s Libertarian Party client. “All agree that elections for federal office have to end on the day of the election specified by Congress,” Clement said. “…Nonetheless, Mississippi insists ballots can trickle in days or even weeks after Election Day.”

 

JW’s brief to the Supreme Court makes the case for a single Election Day. There is no historic foundation for counting ballots arriving after Election Day, JW notes, the opportunities for fraud are endless, and public confidence in elections is eroded.

 

“The whole point of the federal Election-Day statutes is to set a single uniform day for the election,” the brief notes. “Allowing ballots to trickle in days or weeks after Election Day is antithetical to that basic goal.”

 

Congress set an Election Day, not an Election Week or an Election Month. “Through the federal Election-Day statutes, Congress exercised its constitutional authority to set a uniform time for federal elections to occur. Text, historical practice, precedent, and common sense all demonstrate that those statutes set the deadline by which ballots must be submitted and received. Simply put, the ballot box closes on Election Day, and ballots that are not received until days or weeks after the date specified by Congress arrive after Election Day and should not be counted.”

 

It’s been a busy year for Judicial Watch at the Supreme Court. In January, the court granted standing in a historic case JW filed on behalf of Congressman Mike Bost and two presidential electors. The case challenges an Illinois law allowing the counting of ballots received up to fourteen days after the election.

 

The Judicial Watch election integrity team is led by Senior Attorney Robert Popper, who previously served in the Voting Section of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. JW attorneys T. Russell Nobile and Eric Lee provide critical support for JW’s many landmark legal efforts.

 

On Monday, Tom Fitton reported from outside the Supreme Court after the hearing. The Judicial Watch team had made “historic legal arguments to preserve the idea of Election Day,” he said. Court observers were largely in agreement that a majority of the justices appeared poised to curb late-arriving ballots—though predicting what the Supreme Court will do is a fool’s errand. Some election officials are not waiting. On Thursday, the New York Times reported that election administrators in some states had already begun “planning for a world where all ballots must arrive by Election Day.”

 

A decision is expected in June.

Trump singles out Australia as he criticises allies on Iran war support

 

US President Donald Trump has singled out Australia while accusing a string of allies of failing to help secure the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

 

"Australia was not great. I was a little surprised by Australia," the US president told a lengthy cabinet meeting in Washington.

 

The criticism came before the president extended Iran's deadline to open the strait to April 6, saying he would delay strikes on energy plants as talks were "going very well."

 

Mr Trump has continued to rail against NATO countries' refusal to get involved in the conflict.

 

Australia was among multiple allies that rebuffed US requests to assist in the strait by sending vessels or troops to the region.

 

Instead, Australia signed a joint statement offering to contribute to efforts to protect the waterway, and Defence Minister Richard Marles said discussions about next steps were ongoing.

 

Earlier this month, Mr Trump called out Australia in a post to social media that lashed allies for refusing to assist the war effort, while claiming the US did "not need the help of anyone".

 

Speaking at the White House, Mr Trump repeated what amounted to a veiled threat, saying he would "never forget" which nations offered assistance and which did not.

 

The president continued his criticism of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who he said had offered to send aircraft carriers to help the US when the "war was already over".

 

"I said, 'Oh, that's wonderful. Thank you very much. Don't bother, we don't need it,'" the president said to a ripple of laughter in the room.

 

The aircraft offered by the UK were "toys compared to what we have," he added.

 

His criticism comes as the president insisted Iran should negotiate a deal, while also repeating threats that the US would be Iran's "worst nightmare" if it chose not to agree to the 15-point peace plan presented by the US earlier this week.

 

'We are playing our part'

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles rejected the president's characterisation of Australia's response to the Iran war.

 

"All we can do is respond to this situation, respond to the requests that are made of us, but doing so with a focus on what is in Australia's national interest," Mr Marles told ABC News Breakfast.

 

He said Australia had not ignored any requests from the White House.

“I am raising 10 red flags before the IDF collapses into itself,” Zamir said during the cabinet meeting, The Jerusalem Post confirmed.

 

IDF sources also told the Post that there is tremendous concern due to the severe manpower shortage, especially amid the ongoing war.

 

Even in peacetime, Israel would still need more soldiers – not fewer – on the border in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank, the sources said.

 

If the government does not add more soldiers, then there will be places with big gaps, they added.

 

There has also been no law set in place to significantly increase haredi (ultra-Orthodox) conscription into the army, contributing to the lack of manpower.

 

Before Operation Roaring Lion, the government was rapidly advancing controversial legislation that was said to enforce haredi conscription.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) stated that “In the next disaster, the government won’t be able to say ‘We didn’t know.’ It bears responsibility. This is on its head.”

 

Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman called to draft everyone and said that the government has become accustomed to ignoring warnings before a disaster, as he referenced the October 7 massacre.

 

Former prime minister Naftali Bennett also slammed the government. “What are you waiting for, for heaven’s sake?” he asked.

 

He added that a government dependent on Shas Party leader Arye Deri and United Torah Judaism leader Yitzhak Goldknopf “is incapable of providing security.”

 

Blue and White Party leader Benny Gantz said that while the government was promising to “change the Middle East” and win the war, it was promoting mass draft evasion and “doesn’t even ensure there will be soldiers to actually win.”

 

“You will not be able to sweep this disgrace under the rug; you will not be able to say ‘we didn’t know’ when the next disaster arrives,” he added.
