Vance Tops CPAC Straw Poll as Early 2028 GOP Field Takes Shape

In 2025, Vance won the CPAC straw poll for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination.

Vice President JD Vance is the leading candidate to take the Republican nomination for president in 2028, according to a straw poll taken at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday.

Vance received 53 percent of the support of the people who attended the annual conference in Grapevine, Texas. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in second place at 35 percent. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump, Jr. came in at 2 percent each. Ted Cruz, Pete Hegseth, Rand Paul, Tulsi Gabbard, and Greg Abbott all had 1 percent support.

The poll was announced at the end of the four-day CPAC conference.

In 2025, Vance won the CPAC straw poll for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, receiving 61 percent support, and Steve Bannon took 12 percent at second place.

Vance also holds a big lead in the RealClearPolitics average of New Hampshire’s 2028 Republican presidential primary polls conducted in February and March of 2026. Vance leads those polls at 47.3 percent, with Rubio second at 17.3 percent. They are followed by Nikki Haley at 6.7 percent and DeSantis at 5.3 percent.

A presidential matchup between President Donald Trump and Haley had overwhelmingly favored Trump in CPAC’s February 2024 straw poll.

According to the poll, 94 percent of respondents said they would support Trump if a Republican primary were held that day, compared to 5 percent for Haley. Only 1 percent said they were undecided.

Trump is not eligible to run for president in 2028. The president did not attend the 2026 CPAC conference.

The recent CPAC straw poll supports earlier polling that had Vance as the leading candidate.

A September 2025 poll from YouGov showed Vance with a commanding early lead in the 2028 Republican presidential field. The survey had Vance as the top choice with 44 percent of Republican respondents, far ahead of any other potential candidate.

The rest of the field trailed in single digits, with Donald Trump Jr. drawing around 10 percent, followed by Ron DeSantis at roughly 8 percent and Marco Rubio near 4 percent.

Vance talked to Fox News’ Sean Hannity about running against Rubio in a presidential election in November 2025.

In a segment that was aired separately from the full interview, Sean Hannity said Marco Rubio was Vance’s “best friend” in the administration, and Vance agreed.

“People have asked me, ‘Do you see Marco as a rival?’ First of all, if either one of us end up running, it’s a long ways in the future and none of us are entitled to it. It would be ridiculous for me to say, ‘Marco is a rival.’ No. No. No. Marco is a colleague.”

Failure Factory

It’s a disturbing reality in some of America's public schools: diplomas are being handed out, but basic skills are nowhere to be found. One major city school system has become a national warning sign: skyrocketing budgets, stagnant or falling test scores, and a hidden practice of simply changing failing grades so students can graduate — even when they're not ready.

Today we hear from investigative reporter Chris Papst, he’s a fellow investigative reporter at Sinclair, the company responsible for this news program, and author of the book: Failure Factory: How Baltimore City Public Schools Deprive Taxpayers and Students of a Future.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman

NASA astronauts are returning to the Moon.

@POTUS took the most meaningful step forward in space since the Kennedy administration by establishing Artemis. In his second term, he signed the One Big Beautiful Bill, giving NASA the resources to execute, and now Artemis II is on the launchpad. In the days ahead, the brave crew of Artemis II will launch potentially farther into space than humans have ever gone before, nearly 250,000 miles away from Earth.

Artemis III will follow in 2027, testing one or both commercial landers in low Earth orbit, followed by Artemis IV, which will put American boots back on the lunar surface - not for flags and footprints, but to stay, to build the Moon Base.

NASA's Artemis II Q&A from Quarantine

Join us as the Artemis II crew answers questions from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, where they're in protective quarantine ahead of their upcoming flight around the Moon.

Four astronauts — three from NASA and one from the CSA (Canadian Space Agency) — make up the Artemis II crew:

NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, Artemis II commander

NASA astronaut Victor Glover, Artemis II pilot

NASA astronaut Christina Koch, Artemis II mission specialist

Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, Artemis II mission specialist

NASA's Artemis II mission is scheduled to lift off from Kennedy Space Center on April 1. The two-hour launch window starts at 6:24 p.m. EDT (2224 UTC).

After launching into space atop NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the crew will journey around the Moon and back in their Orion spacecraft, named Integrity, on an approximately 10-day mission. Artemis II will be the first crewed flight test of SLS and Orion, testing the technologies we'll need for long-term lunar exploration and human missions to Mars.
