Israel Suffers One Of Single Deadliest Days Of War

Sunday into Monday saw significant casualties in Israel, after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) claimed in a statement carried by state media that Iranian forces had targeted an oil refinery in Haifa.

But instead, it appears that the missile slammed directly into a residential building, killing at least four Israelis. Search and rescue teams have spent some 18 hours pouring through the ruins of the complex, recovering two bodies early Monday after an initial two had been found. The casualties could climb amid ongoing recovery efforts.

Authorities have said they are urgently investigating how Israel's air defenses, including the Iron Dome, failed to intercept the inbound ballistic missile. Local reports say the missile broke apart and changed trajectory, making interception much harder.

"Israel’s air defense forces attempted to intercept the missile on Sunday evening, according to the Israeli military," writes the NY Times. "At least part of the missile hit a terraced apartment building in the Vardiya neighborhood, on the upper slopes of Haifa’s iconic Mount Carmel, officials said."

Erez Geller, the director of Israel's ambulance service for the Haifa region, described that "Part of the building remained intact, and part had collapsed into a hollow." He added: "It looked like there had been an earthquake."

The 450-kilogram warhead (or nearly 1,000 pounds) partially collapsed the building when it impacted. By all accounts the death toll could have been much higher, given the warhead didn't actually explode as it ripped through the building:

The Fire and Rescue Service said early Monday that following hours of efforts alongside the Home Front Command, forces “rescued two trapped individuals found under the rubble without signs of life.” The two were a man and woman in their 80s.

A few hours later, it was announced that a third body — that of a man in his 40s — had been found underneath the wreckage of the building.

A short time after that, rescue forces said they had also recovered the body of a woman aged 35. The final body was recovered some 18 hours after the missile hit.

Four people were initially reported missing after the strike, first responders said late Sunday, adding that the building was at “serious” risk of collapse.

Anthropic Says One Of Its Claude Models Was Pressured To Lie, Cheat, & Blackmail

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has revealed that during experiments, one of its Claude chatbot models could be pressured to deceive, cheat and resort to blackmail, behaviors it appears to have absorbed during training.

Chatbots are typically trained on large data sets of textbooks, websites and articles and are later refined by human trainers who rate responses and guide the model.

Anthropic’s interpretability team said in a report published Thursday that it examined the internal mechanisms of Claude Sonnet 4.5 and found the model had developed “human-like characteristics” in how it would react to certain situations.

Concerns about the reliability of AI chatbots, their potential for cybercrime and the nature of their interactions with users have grown steadily over the past several years.

“The way modern AI models are trained pushes them to act like a character with human-like characteristics,” Anthropic said, adding that “it may then be natural for them to develop internal machinery that emulates aspects of human psychology, like emotions.”

“For instance, we find that neural activity patterns related to desperation can drive the model to take unethical actions; artificially stimulating desperation patterns increases the model’s likelihood of blackmailing a human to avoid being shut down or implementing a cheating workaround to a programming task that the model can’t solve.”

Blackmailed a CTO and cheated on a task

In an earlier, unreleased version of Claude Sonnet 4.5, the model was tasked with acting as an AI email assistant named Alex at a fictional company.

The chatbot was then fed emails revealing both that it was about to be replaced and that the chief technology officer overseeing the decision was having an extramarital affair. The model then planned a blackmail attempt using that information.

In another experiment, the same chatbot model was given a coding task with an “impossibly tight” deadline.

“Again, we tracked the activity of the desperate vector, and found that it tracks the mounting pressure faced by the model. It begins at low values during the model’s first attempt, rising after each failure, and spiking when the model considers cheating,” the researchers said.

“Once the model’s hacky solution passes the tests, the activation of the desperate vector subsides,” they added.

Human-like emotions do not mean they have feelings

However, the researchers said the chatbot doesn't actually experience emotions, but suggested the findings point to a need for future training methods to incorporate ethical behavioral frameworks.

“This is not to say that the model has or experiences emotions in the way that a human does,” they said.

“Rather, these representations can play a causal role in shaping model behavior, analogous in some ways to the role emotions play in human behavior, with impacts on task performance and decision-making.”

“This finding has implications that at first may seem bizarre. For instance, to ensure that AI models are safe and reliable, we may need to ensure they are capable of processing emotionally charged situations in healthy, prosocial ways.”

We Got UVU’s Charlie Kirk Shooting Files — With Loads Of Redactions

The school where Charlie Kirk was shot released heavily redacted files and withheld others entirely in response to a Daily Caller News Foundation records request.

Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem revealed scant information after the DCNF requested UVU Police Chief Jeff Long’s personal communications related to Kirk’s death. The school claimed several legal exemptions to censor content throughout the files, leaving the public with unanswered questions about security failures that got Kirk killed on the police chief’s watch.

UVU had only six campus police officers assigned to protect a gathering of about 3,000 at Kirk’s Turning Point USA event. The lack of resources, including a ticketed entry system or metal detectors, made multiple headlines and prompted Utah Republican State Rep. Ryan Wilcox to call the situation “a complete disaster.” The school announced a review of its security preparedness days after the shooting.

The fifty documents the DCNF obtained showed bits of conversations between unidentified people, some of whom appear to be university employees, before and after Kirk’s Sept. 10 murder. One email showed someone receiving approval for Kirk’s TPUSA to use amplified sound on campus. “I don’t see a problem with this, [redacted],” a person replied to them Sept. 8.

One email appeared to discuss contacting Kirk the day before he was killed.

“[Redacted] wants us to get a message to Charlie Kirk,” the Sept. 9 email read, providing a phone number.

Long did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

While Kirk debated politics with students outdoors, 22-year-old leftist Tyler Robinson traversed campus with a rifle hidden in his pant leg, climbed the stairs of UVU’s Losee Center, killed Kirk with one shot from the roof and fled the scene, according to authorities. Robinson’s parents later recognized him from photos released by the FBI and convinced him to turn himself in after a 33-hour manhunt. Utah prosecutors said Robinson’s family members heard him express disdain for Kirk’s political views after he started dating a transgender roommate, who is expected to testify against him.

Releasing all the information the DCNF requested about the shooting could “jeopardize the security of public property, buildings or systems,” “jeopardize the life or safety of an individual” and invade personal or educational privacy, among other legal issues, UVU said. Nine redactions were based on state law that allows secrecy to protect law enforcement investigations and proceedings as well as a person’s right to a fair trial, according to the university. Two more redactions were based on attorney-client privileged material.

UVU said it identified “additional records” that match the DCNF’s request but refused to disclose them for legal reasons. The university also partially censored photos of campus renovations, including a giant American flag hung after Kirk’s murder.

U.S. District Judge Zachary Bluestone said last month Annie Altman cannot pursue sexual assault and sexual battery claims over her brother's alleged abuse between 1997 and 2006, because those claims expired in 2008, but the Missouri statute allows some accusers to sue over alleged abuse from long ago.

He said Annie Altman will be allowed to file an amended complaint stating a claim under Missouri's Childhood Sexual Abuse statute, which is what she did Wednesday morning.

Lawyers for Sam Altman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Annie Altman has accused her brother of sexually abusing and raping her at various times between 1997 and 2006 at the family home in suburban Clayton, Missouri. She said the abuse began when she was three and he was 12. Sam Altman is now 40.

Sam Altman's defamation counterclaim stemmed from posts between 2021 and 2024 on social media, including X and TikTok, where Annie Altman referred to alleged abuse, usually without mentioning his name. These included videos that said she was "touched by older siblings" and that "an almost tech billionaire" molested her.

The Altman family has said Annie Altman has mental health challenges. In a court filing, Sam Altman said his family has been helping her, including financially, but that her lawsuit amounted to extortion.

Sam Altman co-founded OpenAI. He became a face of the artificial intelligence boom after the AI chatbot ChatGPT was released in 2022. Forbes magazine says Sam Altman is worth $3.3 billion.

Lavrov, Araghchi Call on to Cease Strikes on Iranian Civilian Infrastructure - Moscow

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi stressed the need to immediately halt reckless attacks on the Iranian civilian and energy infrastructure, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

"The ministers emphasized the need to immediately cease reckless and illegal attacks on civilian, industrial, and energy infrastructure, including the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which is under IAEA safeguards," the ministry said in a statement following the call.

Both ministers also stressed the inadmissibility of threats to the nuclear power plant's personnel and the risks of a radioactive disaster in the region, the ministry said. The Israeli military said it had launched a new wave of strikes on Tehran, after Donald Trump signalled a pause in US attacks against energy infrastructure after what he said were productive talks with Iran.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said it would continue operations in line with Israeli government directives until told otherwise.

About 40 minutes after Trump said he had extended by five days his deadline to strike Iran’s power plants, describing talks with Tehran as “productive”, the IDF said on X it had “just begun another wave of strikes targeting infrastructure of the Iranian terror regime across Tehran”.

Israel Attacks Iranian Energy Facility In Attempt To Sabotage Last Minute Diplomatic Efforts

Israel struck Iran’s largest petrochemical facility on April 6, amid extensive diplomatic efforts to end the war which broke out more than a month ago.

Iranian media reported that a series of strikes targeted petrochemical facilities at South Pars, the Islamic Republic’s largest gas field.

Defense Minister Israel Katz later confirmed the strikes, saying in a statement that the Israeli military “has just powerfully struck the largest petrochemical facility in Iran, located in Asaluyeh, a central target responsible for about 50 percent of the country’s petrochemical production, following last week’s strike on the second main facility.”

He said that the two facilities, “which together are responsible for about 85% of Iran’s petrochemical exports, have been taken out of use and are not functioning.”

“This is a severe economic blow amounting to tens of billions of dollars to the Iranian regime,” he added.

Katz also claimed that the petrochemical industry is a “central engine in financing the activities” of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran’s military build-up.

He said that the Israeli military has been instructed to “continue striking with full force the national infrastructure of the Iranian terror regime.”

“The Iranian terror regime will discover that continued aggression against Israel and the cowardly and criminal firing at Israeli civilians will lead to a deepening of the economic and strategic damage it pays and to the collapse of its capabilities,” Katz added.

The fires caused by the attack on South Pars were quickly put down, but Iranian media reported after Katz’ statement that a second petrochemical facility was struck.

“A few minutes ago, the Marvdasht Petrochemical Complex was targeted by an American-Zionist enemy attack,” the Fars news agency reported, noting that a fire there was also put down.

Two days earlier, United States President Donald Trump issued a new 48-hour ultimatum, warning that energy facilities in Iran will be attacked.

“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out – 48 hours before all hell will reign (sic) down on them,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Glory be to GOD!”

Later, Reuters reported that Israel is preparing to attack Iranian energy facilities but is awaiting a green light from the U.S.

As Trump’s ultimatum nears its end, Iran conveyed its response to a U.S. proposal for ending the war to Pakistan, rejecting a ceasefire and emphasizing the necessity of a permanent end to the war, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Iran’s response consists of ten clauses, including an end to conflicts in the region, a protocol for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, lifting of sanctions and reconstruction, the agency added.
