Ukrainian drones target key US-linked oil hub in Russia – Defense Ministry

Ukrainian drones have attacked the oil infrastructure of the Russian port of Novorossiysk, which is operated by the internationally-owned Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), the Defense Ministry in Moscow has reported.

The CPC crude shipment hub on the Black Sea shore has been repeatedly targeted in suspected Ukrainian UAV strikes in recent months, prompting condemnation from Kazakhstan and the US.

 

The consortium ships oil from Kazakhstan through the Caspian Pipeline to a marine terminal in Novorossiysk, where it is loaded onto tankers bound for Europe and Asia.

Among the CPC shareholders are major energy companies from Russia, Kazakhstan, several Western European countries and the US, including Chevron and ExxonMobil.

 

On Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that overnight, “the Kiev regime conducted an attack on facilities at the marine transshipment complex in Novorossiysk, involving fixed-wing strike UAVs.”

According to the statement, the strike was aimed at “destabilizing the global hydrocarbon market and stopping deliveries of oil products to European consumers.”

 

The latest attack also sought to “inflict maximum economic damage on the largest [CPC] shareholders – energy companies from Kazakhstan and the US.”

No casualties have been reported, but an unloading berth and four tanks were damaged.

 

Last November, the CPC’s office in Novorossiysk and one of the berths at its marine terminal were struck by suspected Ukrainian drones.

The company stated at the time that it was the third act of aggression against a civilian facility protected under international law since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

In February 2025, UAVs targeted the consortium-operated Kropotkinskaya oil pumping station.

 

Following the November attack, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry lodged an official protest with Ukraine.

In February, Ukrainian Ambassador to the US Olga Stefanishina revealed that Washington had similarly filed a formal demarche with Kiev over the strike, in which “American economic interest was affected.”

 

In recent months, Ukraine has intensified its strikes on Russia’s oil infrastructure including refineries, pipelines, and terminals in an effort to disrupt the country’s ability to export crude.

Moscow has accused Kiev of resorting to terrorist tactics and inflicting damage to third parties not involved in the conflict between the two nations.

One dead after Ukrainian drone attacked grain vessel in Azov sea – official

A cargo ship sank in the Azov Sea after a Ukrainian drone strike, leaving one crew member dead, according to Kherson Region Governor Vladimir Saldo. He described the incident as a “terrorist attack.”

The vessel, identified as the Volgo-Balt, was attacked on April 3 while carrying wheat, Saldo said on Telegram on Sunday. The crew abandoned the ship as it began to sink and managed to reach shore near the village of Strelkovoye in Russia’s Kherson Region two days later.

One person, the senior assistant captain, died, while two others remain missing, according to the governor. Local residents were the first to help the crew after they reached shore, assisting them before emergency services arrived.

 

The captain has been hospitalized in the town of Genichesk, Saldo said, adding that other crew members were receiving medical and psychological assistance.

“This is not the first time Ukraine has attacked civilian vessels in international waters. There will be accountability for these crimes,” Saldo added.

 

Earlier, TASS reported that the Russian-flagged Volga-Balt-138 was sailing from the port of Azov in Rostov Region to the port of Kavkaz in Krasnodar Region, citing MarineTraffic data, and was due to arrive on April 2.

Its last signal was received three days before the incident. Nine crew members evacuated in a lifeboat capsule and reached Kherson Region.

Russian officials have repeatedly accused Ukraine of targeting civilian infrastructure and vessels.

The Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for ppPresident Donald Trump’s administration to drop the government’s criminal case against Steve Bannon, a former White House adviser convicted in 2022 of defying a subpoena from lawmakers investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.==

 

The Supreme Court’s decision follows a move by federal prosecutors inFebruary to drop the indictment brought during President Joe Biden’s administration. Both theJustice Department and Bannon had asked the high court to toss out an appeals court ruling upholding the convictionand send the case back to a trial court so that the original charges against himcould be dismissed.

 

“This case should never have been brought, and we’re delighted that the decision affirming Mr. Bannon’s unlawful conviction has finally been vacated,” Bannon’s attorney, Michael Buschbacher, told CNN.

 

Bannon was convicted by a federal jury for refusing to comply with a subpoena for an interview and documents in the US House’s January 6, 2021, investigation. He already completed a four-month prison sentence for that in 2024.

 

The decision won’t have much of a practical consequence given that Bannon has already served his time, but Trump’s former aide has nevertheless continued to challenge his conviction.

Israel Suffers One Of Single Deadliest Days Of War

 

Sunday into Monday saw significant casualties in Israel, after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) claimed in a statement carried by state media that Iranian forces had targeted an oil refinery in Haifa.

 

But instead, it appears that the missile slammed directly into a residential building, killing at least four Israelis. Search and rescue teams have spent some 18 hours pouring through the ruins of the complex, recovering two bodies early Monday after an initial two had been found. The casualties could climb amid ongoing recovery efforts.

 

Authorities have said they are urgently investigating how Israel's air defenses, including the Iron Dome, failed to intercept the inbound ballistic missile. Local reports say the missile broke apart and changed trajectory, making interception much harder.

 

"Israel’s air defense forces attempted to intercept the missile on Sunday evening, according to the Israeli military," writes the NY Times. "At least part of the missile hit a terraced apartment building in the Vardiya neighborhood, on the upper slopes of Haifa’s iconic Mount Carmel, officials said."

 

Erez Geller, the director of Israel's ambulance service for the Haifa region, described that "Part of the building remained intact, and part had collapsed into a hollow." He added: "It looked like there had been an earthquake."

 

The 450-kilogram warhead (or nearly 1,000 pounds) partially collapsed the building when it impacted. By all accounts the death toll could have been much higher, given the warhead didn't actually explode as it ripped through the building:

 

The Fire and Rescue Service said early Monday that following hours of efforts alongside the Home Front Command, forces “rescued two trapped individuals found under the rubble without signs of life.” The two were a man and woman in their 80s.

 

A few hours later, it was announced that a third body — that of a man in his 40s — had been found underneath the wreckage of the building.

 

A short time after that, rescue forces said they had also recovered the body of a woman aged 35. The final body was recovered some 18 hours after the missile hit.

 

Four people were initially reported missing after the strike, first responders said late Sunday, adding that the building was at “serious” risk of collapse.

Anthropic Says One Of Its Claude Models Was Pressured To Lie, Cheat, & Blackmail

 

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has revealed that during experiments, one of its Claude chatbot models could be pressured to deceive, cheat and resort to blackmail, behaviors it appears to have absorbed during training.

 

Chatbots are typically trained on large data sets of textbooks, websites and articles and are later refined by human trainers who rate responses and guide the model.

 

Anthropic’s interpretability team said in a report published Thursday that it examined the internal mechanisms of Claude Sonnet 4.5 and found the model had developed “human-like characteristics” in how it would react to certain situations.

 

Concerns about the reliability of AI chatbots, their potential for cybercrime and the nature of their interactions with users have grown steadily over the past several years.

 

“The way modern AI models are trained pushes them to act like a character with human-like characteristics,” Anthropic said, adding that “it may then be natural for them to develop internal machinery that emulates aspects of human psychology, like emotions.”

 

“For instance, we find that neural activity patterns related to desperation can drive the model to take unethical actions; artificially stimulating desperation patterns increases the model’s likelihood of blackmailing a human to avoid being shut down or implementing a cheating workaround to a programming task that the model can’t solve.”

 

Blackmailed a CTO and cheated on a task

In an earlier, unreleased version of Claude Sonnet 4.5, the model was tasked with acting as an AI email assistant named Alex at a fictional company.

 

The chatbot was then fed emails revealing both that it was about to be replaced and that the chief technology officer overseeing the decision was having an extramarital affair. The model then planned a blackmail attempt using that information.

 

In another experiment, the same chatbot model was given a coding task with an “impossibly tight” deadline.

 

“Again, we tracked the activity of the desperate vector, and found that it tracks the mounting pressure faced by the model. It begins at low values during the model’s first attempt, rising after each failure, and spiking when the model considers cheating,” the researchers said.

 

“Once the model’s hacky solution passes the tests, the activation of the desperate vector subsides,” they added.

 

Human-like emotions do not mean they have feelings

However, the researchers said the chatbot doesn't actually experience emotions, but suggested the findings point to a need for future training methods to incorporate ethical behavioral frameworks.

 

“This is not to say that the model has or experiences emotions in the way that a human does,” they said.

 

“Rather, these representations can play a causal role in shaping model behavior, analogous in some ways to the role emotions play in human behavior, with impacts on task performance and decision-making.”

 

“This finding has implications that at first may seem bizarre. For instance, to ensure that AI models are safe and reliable, we may need to ensure they are capable of processing emotionally charged situations in healthy, prosocial ways.”

IDF Home Front Command extends siren warning times for Hezbollah rockets in North

In 22 locations in the Golan Heights, the time will be extended from "immediate" to 15-30 seconds, depending on the town.

Beginning at noon on Tuesday, the IDF's Home Front Command will extend the time civilians have to reach shelter from the moment a siren sounds for rockets launched by Hezbollah in Lebanon toward Israel, the military announced on Monday.

In 22 locations, the time will be extended from "immediate" to 15-30 seconds, depending on the town. In another 14 areas, the time will be extended from 15 seconds to either 30 or 45 seconds. In eight areas, they will extend from 30 to 45 seconds, and in a further five, there will be no change.

At the five locations with no change, citizens have either 15 seconds or a full minute to find shelter after a siren sounds.

We Got UVU’s Charlie Kirk Shooting Files — With Loads Of Redactions

 

The school where Charlie Kirk was shot released heavily redacted files and withheld others entirely in response to a Daily Caller News Foundation records request.

 

Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem revealed scant information after the DCNF requested UVU Police Chief Jeff Long’s personal communications related to Kirk’s death. The school claimed several legal exemptions to censor content throughout the files, leaving the public with unanswered questions about security failures that got Kirk killed on the police chief’s watch.

 

UVU had only six campus police officers assigned to protect a gathering of about 3,000 at Kirk’s Turning Point USA event. The lack of resources, including a ticketed entry system or metal detectors, made multiple headlines and prompted Utah Republican State Rep. Ryan Wilcox to call the situation “a complete disaster.” The school announced a review of its security preparedness days after the shooting.

 

The fifty documents the DCNF obtained showed bits of conversations between unidentified people, some of whom appear to be university employees, before and after Kirk’s Sept. 10 murder. One email showed someone receiving approval for Kirk’s TPUSA to use amplified sound on campus. “I don’t see a problem with this, [redacted],” a person replied to them Sept. 8.

 

One email appeared to discuss contacting Kirk the day before he was killed.

 

“[Redacted] wants us to get a message to Charlie Kirk,” the Sept. 9 email read, providing a phone number.

 

Long did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

 

While Kirk debated politics with students outdoors, 22-year-old leftist Tyler Robinson traversed campus with a rifle hidden in his pant leg, climbed the stairs of UVU’s Losee Center, killed Kirk with one shot from the roof and fled the scene, according to authorities. Robinson’s parents later recognized him from photos released by the FBI and convinced him to turn himself in after a 33-hour manhunt. Utah prosecutors said Robinson’s family members heard him express disdain for Kirk’s political views after he started dating a transgender roommate, who is expected to testify against him.

 

Releasing all the information the DCNF requested about the shooting could “jeopardize the security of public property, buildings or systems,” “jeopardize the life or safety of an individual” and invade personal or educational privacy, among other legal issues, UVU said. Nine redactions were based on state law that allows secrecy to protect law enforcement investigations and proceedings as well as a person’s right to a fair trial, according to the university. Two more redactions were based on attorney-client privileged material.

 

UVU said it identified “additional records” that match the DCNF’s request but refused to disclose them for legal reasons. The university also partially censored photos of campus renovations, including a giant American flag hung after Kirk’s murder.

Iran makes new claim to have shot down an American F-35 fighter jet

 

Iran's state media carried a new claim by the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Friday to have shot down a U.S. F-35 fighter jet.

 

The jet was "struck and downed over central Iran by the IRGC Aerospace Force's new air defense system," a spokesman for Iran's central military headquarters said in a statement carried by state media. "Due to the severe explosion of the aircraft upon impact and crash, it is unlikely that the pilot ejected safely."

 

It was the second claim by the IRGC to have shot down an F-35 this week, the first of which was flatly denied by the U.S. military on Thursday.

 

"All U.S. fighter aircraft are accounted for," U.S. Central Command said in a social media post on Thursday, referring to the claim made by the IRGC on Wednesday to have downed an F-35 over the Iranian Persian Gulf island of Qeshm.

 

"Iran's IRGC has made the same false claim at least half a dozen times," CENTCOM added in its social media post.

 

CBS News asked CENTCOM about the new claim by the IRGC on Friday but did not receive an immediate response.

 

Iranian media posted images on social media showing various items of debris described as parts of a downed F-35, including a photo purported to show a badly damaged tail piece bearing insignia suggesting the debris was part of an aircraft based at RAF Lakenheath air base in the U.K., home to the U.S. Air Forces' 48th Fighter Wing, which includes F-35s.

 

CBS News has not independently verified the authenticity of the photos shared by Iran's state media.

Iranian media claim U.S. military searching for American fighter jet pilot after shoot-down

 

There were unconfirmed reports of a U.S. search and rescue operation in the skies over Iran on Friday after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard claimed it shot down a U.S. F-35 fighter jet over the middle of the country.

 

The U.S. military had not replied to a CBS News' request for information on the alleged incident hours after it was submitted.

 

Axios reported that a "source familiar with the incident" had confirmed the shootdown and an ongoing search for the plane's two-member crew.

 

There were conflicting reports about whether it was an F-35 or an F-15 possible hit by Iran.

 

Photos and video were circulating on social media, shared by Iranian state news outlets, suggesting at least one U.S. C-130 aircraft and an Apache attack helicopter were spotted flying low over central and southwest Iran in what was described as a possible effort to locate and recover an American pilot who ejected after being hit.

 

The U.S. has lost at least 16 MQ-9 Reaper drones over Iran since the war began, and three U.S. F-15 fighter jets were shot down over Kuwait in a "friendly fire incident" early in the conflict, but there were no casualties.

 

If confirmed by the U.S. military, the shootdown claimed by the IRGC on Friday would be the first of a manned American aircraft by enemy fire during the war, and it would come after repeated assertions by President Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and military commanders that Iran has been largely deprived of attack capabilities and air defenses during the war.

 

"Now in our 5th week of the campaign, it is my operational assessment that we are making undeniable progress. We don't see their navy sailing. We don't see their aircraft flying, and their air and missile defense systems have largely been destroyed," CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said Thursday.

 

A local affiliate of Iran's state TV channel said Friday a prize was on offer for anyone able to "capture the enemy pilot or pilots alive and hand them over to the police."

 

The Associated Press said the TV broadcast included a written message urging viewers to shoot at any U.S. aircraft seen flying overhead.

CBS News analyst says images of low-flying U.S. aircraft over Iran consistent with a rescue mission

 

CBS News national security analyst Aaron MacLean said images being shared widely on social media and by Iranian state media, showing U.S. warplanes and attack helicopters flying low on Friday, are consistent with the kind of maneuvers typical of a search and rescue mission.

 

He said the aircraft seen in the video clips, some of which CBS News has independently verified, appeared to be flying at low altitudes in broad daylight over hostile territory, something the U.S. military would only do if it had a good reason, such as to try and rescue a downed pilot or pilots.

What to know about F-15E fighter jets and their mission

 

F-15E fighter jets in Iran, like the one that was downed, are being used for bombing missions, says Aaron MacLean, a CBS News national security analyst.

 

"There's not a lot of air-to-air combat to be had right now," he said.

 

"So this aircraft would have been prosecuting targets in Iran or participating broadly in some sort of mission to strike targets on the ground in Iran," he said.

 

The F-15E is flown by a two-member crew, who MacLean says would be armed with sidearms.

 

"But depending on what they encounter on the ground, that's not a lot," he said. "You would have a pistol essentially to defend yourself in extremis. The much better play, and what they would be looking to do, is hide, make contact with their rescuers and get out without coming into contact, obviously, with any kind of enemy forces."

 

The pilots have been trained in procedures they should follow if they eject from the aircraft, including evading capture. In a scenario in which they are captured, they have been trained to "comport themselves in a manner that does credit to their country," MacLean said.

 

The fighter jet that was downed is the same type of aircraft that was shot down last month over Kuwait in a "friendly fire incident." In that incident, three American F-15s were "mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses," according to CENTCOM. All six aircrew ejected safely.

Iran's parliamentary speaker mocks U.S. after fighter jet shot down

 

Iran's parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, mocked the U.S. on Friday after his country shot down a U.S. F-15E aircraft over southwestern Iran.

 

"This brilliant no-strategy war they started has now been downgraded from 'regime change' to 'Hey! Can anyone find our pilots? Please?" he wrote on his X account.

 

U.S. officials confirmed to CBS News that Iranian forces shot down an F-15E on Friday. One crew member was rescued by American forces while a search mission is underway for another crew member.

 

Ghalibaf, doubling down on his mockery, wrote, "What incredible progress. Absolute geniuses."

An American A-10 Warthog took fire and was damaged during a search-and-rescue mission for a crew member on a U.S. fighter jet that was downed over Iran, two U.S. officials told CBS News.

 

The Warthog pilot ejected over the Persian Gulf and was successfully recovered.

After a federal judge dismissed Sam Altman’s sister’s civil lawsuit accusing the OpenAI chief executive of sexually abusing her more than two decades ago, Annie Altman filed her amended complaint in St. Louis federal court.

 

U.S. District Judge Zachary Bluestone said last month Annie Altman cannot pursue sexual assault and sexual battery claims over her brother's alleged abuse between 1997 and 2006, because those claims expired in 2008, but the Missouri statute allows some accusers to sue over alleged abuse from long ago.

 

He said Annie Altman will be allowed to file an amended complaint stating a claim under Missouri's Childhood Sexual Abuse statute, which is what she did Wednesday morning.

 

Lawyers for Sam Altman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

 

Annie Altman has accused her brother of sexually abusing and raping her at various times between 1997 and 2006 at the family home in suburban Clayton, Missouri. She said the abuse began when she was three and he was 12. Sam Altman is now 40.

 

Sam Altman's defamation counterclaim stemmed from posts between 2021 and 2024 on social media, including X and TikTok, where Annie Altman referred to alleged abuse, usually without mentioning his name. These included videos that said she was "touched by older siblings" and that "an almost tech billionaire" molested her.

 

The Altman family has said Annie Altman has mental health challenges. In a court filing, Sam Altman said his family has been helping her, including financially, but that her lawsuit amounted to extortion.

 

Sam Altman co-founded OpenAI. He became a face of the artificial intelligence boom after the AI chatbot ChatGPT was released in 2022. Forbes magazine says Sam Altman is worth $3.3 billion.

U.S. fighter pilot was rescued by helicopters; search continues for 2nd crew member

 

The American F-15E pilot who was rescued after his plane was downed over Iran was recovered by two U.S. military helicopters, two U.S. officials told CBS News.

 

The search continues for the second F-15E crew member, a weapon systems officer.

 

The helicopter carrying the recovered pilot was hit by small arms fire, wounding crew members of the helicopter on board. The helicopter landed safely. All service members are receiving initial medical treatment and will be transported for further medical care.

Here's how a search and rescue mission in Iran might work

 

The U.S. military has highly trained forces known as Air Force Pararescuemen who are dedicated to search and rescue operations like the one taking place for the missing crew member from the U.S. F-15E fighter jet that was shot down over Iran earlier Friday, CBS News national security analyst Aaron MacLean said.

 

"They are essentially dedicated to just this," MacLean, a Marine Corps veteran who served in Afghanistan, said of the Pararescuemen, who are also known as PJs.

 

MacLean said the PJs "operate with different aviation packages to insert in these exact circumstances," describing them as "an extraordinary group of special operators, who go in and rescue pilots, who themselves have extensive training on surviving, evading and otherwise resisting potential captors."

 

He explained that the missing crew member would have first-aid gear and "training in how to administer self-care in case they're injured."

 

He also said they would be equipped with communications gear to "let their chain of command know that they are OK, and ideally participate in their own rescue."

 

MacLean noted that the crew member would have a GPS tracker, a beacon and an encrypted radio that would allow them to avoid enemy personnel while signaling potential rescuers.

F-15E was first fighter jet to be shot down in combat in decades, retired general says

 

The downing of F-15E fighter jet Friday marked the first time a fighter jet was shot down in combat in over 20 years, said retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Houston Cantwell, a former F-16 fighter pilot.

 

But, he said, that's because the U.S. had largely been fighting insurgents who didn't have the same anti-aircraft capabilities. The fact that there have not been more fighter jets lost in Iran, Cantwell said, is a testament to the capabilities of U.S. forces. U.S. Central Command said in a statement Wednesday that American forces have flown more than 13,000 missions in the Iran war and struck more than 12,300 targets.

 

The last U.S. jet shot down in combat was struck by an Iraqi surface-to-air missile over Baghdad on April 8, 2003. The pilot safely ejected and was rescued, according to the Air Force.

 

"The fact that this hasn't happened until now is an absolute miracle," said Cantwell, who served four combat tours and is now a senior resident fellow at the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies. "We're flying combat missions here, they are being shot at every day."

Lady of Larissa Flies Again: Incredible New Footage Emerges of the Secretive RQ-180 Spy Drone

New videos give an even clearer view – unquestionably our best ever – of the legendary classified stealth drone, previously seen making an emergency landing in Greece last month.

Last month, we reported on images taken in Larissa, Greece, showing what we, and others, concluded – based on prior sightings and comment from familiar sources – was the U.S. Air Force’s secretive and still undisclosed ‘RQ-180’ stealth UAV.

We do not know the official designation for this airframe, so we, like many others, use the label RQ-180 in lieu of this.

 

The aircraft had apparently appeared in daylight hours over Greece owing to an in flight emergency, requiring a diversion – though this may have been a cover story linked to the clearly incorrect explanation that it was a B-2 Spirit.

As we reported, Larissa is not unfamiliar to U.S. drone operations. After news of the video trickled out, the aircraft quickly picked up the colloqial nickname ‘Lady of Larissa’.

 

Now, in recent days, even more video footage from Greece has emerged online, taken by The Aviationist reader Efthymios Siakaras, showing a view almost directly underneath the aircraft as it apparently makes an approach to land.

The new, closer angle allows us to see details on the aircraft we’ve never previously been able to make out. We have a clear view of the jet’s landing gear configuration (which definitively rules out any question of this being a B-21 Raider), as well as a good look at what appears to be a large transparent aperture for visible light or infrared sensors fitted flush to the belly of the airframe.

 

Though we could guess previously about what sensors may or may not be carried by the RQ-180, this video gives us our first apparent confirmation of what its payload can include.

Most likely, the aircraft has been designed with a wide array of sensor capabilities, including synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and signals intelligence (SIGINT) equipment.

 

Some sensor payloads may be interchangeable for other configurations based on the mission type, or the configurations may vary according to specific airframes across the total fleet.

Nine pre-production examples of the RQ-180 are known to exist, as recorded by Peter Merlin, and around twice as many production airframes are thought to have subsequently been constructed.

These aircraft may even sport different paint schemes, with some artwork seen in mission patches and logos hinting at dark-coloured airframes as well as the ‘White Bat’ or ‘Shikaka’ style examples.

Another C-17 flight from Edwards to Larissa (with stopovers) arrived and subsequently departed on the morning of Apr. 6 as REACH 1844.

Larissa does have two interesting hangars, far away from other built up areas of the airfield, which may have been constructed to support clandestine drone operations.

Notably the U.S. MQ-9 Reapers based there are instead known to operate from hangars to the north of the airfield (as also seen on satellite imagery), rather than these two. Based on historical satellite imagery, the hangars were constructed within the last few years.

 

It has previously been thought that the most likely RQ-180 forward bases in Europe would be at RAF Akrotiri on Cyprus or Naval Air Station Sigonella on Sicily.

Akrotiri, in particular, is quite well suited for this use case, being owned and operated by a Five Eyes ally and existing within sovereign territory used almost exclusively for military purposes, bordered on three sides by open sea.

 

Larissa, however, might offer added flexibility to RQ-180 (and, it should be noted, RQ-170) operations and may have been developed with Black Sea or even Ukraine overflight missions in mind.

Though further inland than the other two options, primarily operating at night could mitigate at least some degree of exposure risk.

Additionally, aircraft spotting at military installations outside of official events is heavily restricted in Greece and has resulted in unfamiliar foreign tourists being arrested and charged on several occasions.

 

The RQ-180 is thought to have been in frontline use for quite some time, and it was only an eventuality that at some point it would begin making more public appearances.

An official reveal of the aircraft has been suggested as an upcoming possibility by industry commentators for a number of years, but none has yet been forthcoming.

 

Instead, the approaching in-service date of the B-21 Raider might have been judged by U.S. authorities to provide an even better way to keep the RQ-180’s activity under wraps as the planform of the two aircraft is similar, much more so than the B-2 with its sawtooth trailing edge introduced late in development to improve low altitude performance.

If the RQ-180 does continue to get more of a public spotlight, the question that remains is what, if anything, might the U.S. Air Force have in the wings that takes the RQ-180’s capabilities to the next level?

Lavrov, Araghchi Call on to Cease Strikes on Iranian Civilian Infrastructure - Moscow

 

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi stressed the need to immediately halt reckless attacks on the Iranian civilian and energy infrastructure, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.

"The ministers emphasized the need to immediately cease reckless and illegal attacks on civilian, industrial, and energy infrastructure, including the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which is under IAEA safeguards," the ministry said in a statement following the call.

Both ministers also stressed the inadmissibility of threats to the nuclear power plant's personnel and the risks of a radioactive disaster in the region, the ministry said. Lavrov also expressed his condolences to Araghchi over the death of a civilian employee of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, it added.

Earlier in the day, Lavrov held a phone conversation with Araghchi to discuss the situation in the Middle East.

During the call, Lavrov expressed hope for the success of efforts aiming at de-escalating the conflict in the Middle East, it said. In particular, the United States would contribute to such efforts by "abandoning the language of ultimatums and returning the situation to the negotiating track," the ministry added.

"The ministers called for avoiding actions, including in the UN Security Council, that could undermine the remaining chances for advancing political and diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis," the statement read.

Iran claims it downed U.S. fighter jet

Iranian state media claimed overnight that the country has downed a U.S. fighter jet and released photos of what it said was the plane.

 

The jet "was destroyed in the skies over central Iran by a new advanced air defense system of the IRGC Aerospace Force," the IRGC-linked Nour News reported.

 

The photos are difficult to geolocate and the United States has not confirmed any loss of a plane, but an expert told NBC News the images did appear to be from a U.S. fighter jet.

Iranian media said it was an F-35, but "I think the structure looks like an F-15 and from the tail flash stripe markings from the 48th Fighter Wing, based at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom," said Peter Layton, a former officer in the Australian air force and visiting fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute in Australia.

 

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

 

Iran has claimed to have previously struck American planes, but the U.S. has not confirmed any such losses during the war. U.S. Central Command said an F-35 made an emergency landing March 19, but stopped short of confirming this was the result of an Iranian attack.

 

Kuwait accidently shot down three U.S. fighter jets near the start of the war.

A search was underway Friday after a two-seat F-15 fighter jet went down over Iran, according to two U.S. officials.

 

The rescue mission, which includes special operations personnel recovery teams, follows hours of reporting by Iranian state media of a downed U.S. fighter jet. Iran’s media published photos alongside claims from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that it had shot down the aircraft.

 

The fate of those inside the jet was not immediately clear. But one official in Iran’s southwest issued a public plea for locals to find them and promised a reward, according to official and semiofficial Iranian news organizations.

The Israeli military said it had launched a new wave of strikes on Tehran, after Donald Trump signalled a pause in US attacks against energy infrastructure after what he said were productive talks with Iran.

 

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said it would continue operations in line with Israeli government directives until told otherwise.

The new ceasefire framework that reached the US and Iran overnight will not survive Tuesday. Every structural piece of it breaks on contact with the ground truth.

 

The Islamabad Accord does not actually reopen Hormuz. Mediators told Axios a full reopening of the Strait is not on the table until the final deal is inked, 15-20 days out.

 

Reuters reported “immediate ceasefire and Hormuz reopening” as the phase-one terms. Those two facts cannot both be true.

 

Trump’s entire deadline posture assumes the Strait opens immediately. Without that, he has nothing to sell on Tuesday and no reason to accept the accord in the first place.

 

The two sides are not negotiating the same war. The US wants Iran to weaken its ballistic missile program and end nuclear enrichment.

 

Iran wants reparations, US base closures, full sanctions relief, and a legal guarantee against future US-Israeli attacks.

 

There is no version of this deal both sides can sign.

 

Iran does not trust paper. Iranian officials told mediators they will not be “caught in a Gaza or Lebanon situation where there is a ceasefire on paper, but the US and Israel can attack again whenever they want to,” per Axios.

 

The accord offers no enforcement mechanism. None can be built in 48 hours. Iran is being asked to accept what it has publicly said it will not accept.

 

The US has its own reason to sign paper it cannot enforce, and the F-15 rescue is where that reason shows. The operation set up a forward arming and refueling point deep inside Iran, the kind of base built for sustained ground operations.

Video verified by CNN appears to show US search efforts in Iran after a jet was downed

A US fighter jet has been shot down over Iran, three US sources said confirming Iranian state media reports.

 

US forces have launched search and rescue efforts, the sources said. Potential rescue efforts appeared to be captured in video posted to social media and geolocated by CNN.

 

The state-run Tasnim agency said that the search for any missing crew had “so far been unsuccessful.” Separately, on Fars News, an anchor said a reward was being offered for anyone capturing an “enemy pilot or pilots.”

 

It wasn’t immediately clear where in Iran the jet went down. The US military and the White House have not commented on the situation or the status of the crew.

 

Video geolocated by CNN showed multiple low flying military aircraft over Khuzestan Province in central Iran as part of an apparent search and rescue operation.

 

In the video, one airplane can be seen flying low over the ground while two helicopters follow closely behind – a formation that is consistent with an air-to-air refueling operation. The video was taken on a bridge over the Karoon river, which is around 470 km south of Tehran.

 

The incident marks the first time a US aircraft has been shot down over Iran during the conflict. Near the beginning of the war, three F-15s were mistakenly shot down in a friendly fire incident by Kuwaiti air defenses.

 

It comes as Trump administration officials have made repeated claims that the war is essentially won, and that the US has air superiority over the country. Last month, President Donald Trump said in the Oval Office that the US has “won this, because this war has been won, the only one that likes to keep it going is the fake news.”

 

“[W]e literally have planes flying over Tehran and other parts of their country. They can’t do a thing about it,” Trump said.

 

Iranian state media released photos on Friday of what it claimed was the wreckage of a US fighter jet, showing small pieces of what appears to be an F-15. The photos show a partial logo for “US Air Forces in Europe” on a F-15 tail fin and red-and-white striping from the top of the tail fin.

President Trump said there is going to be an investigation to find out who "leaked" the news that the U.S. still had a pilot stranded in Iran.

COMET MAPS WAS OBLITERATED (UPDATED)

 

The solar system has one less comet. Yesterday, Comet MAPS (C/2026 A1) flew through the sun's atmosphere only 160,000 km above the sun's surface. The comet went in, but only a cloud of debris came out:

SOHO coronagraphs captured the death dive, which was invisible from Earth. In the movie, above, there's a sudden brightening between 0600 UTC and 0800 UTC. That was probably the comet's nucleus exploding due to thermal stress. The sudden brightening is better seen in this wider view.

 

While the comet was behind the coronagraph's occulting disk, the fragmented nucleus was apparently vaporized, leaving only a stream of dusty debris to exit on the other side. SOHO data are still coming in, so we'll see more of this debris in the hours ahead.

Israel Attacks Iranian Energy Facility In Attempt To Sabotage Last Minute Diplomatic Efforts

 

Israel struck Iran’s largest petrochemical facility on April 6, amid extensive diplomatic efforts to end the war which broke out more than a month ago.

 

Iranian media reported that a series of strikes targeted petrochemical facilities at South Pars, the Islamic Republic’s largest gas field.

 

Defense Minister Israel Katz later confirmed the strikes, saying in a statement that the Israeli military “has just powerfully struck the largest petrochemical facility in Iran, located in Asaluyeh, a central target responsible for about 50 percent of the country’s petrochemical production, following last week’s strike on the second main facility.”

 

He said that the two facilities, “which together are responsible for about 85% of Iran’s petrochemical exports, have been taken out of use and are not functioning.”

 

“This is a severe economic blow amounting to tens of billions of dollars to the Iranian regime,” he added.

 

Katz also claimed that the petrochemical industry is a “central engine in financing the activities” of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran’s military build-up.

 

He said that the Israeli military has been instructed to “continue striking with full force the national infrastructure of the Iranian terror regime.”

 

“The Iranian terror regime will discover that continued aggression against Israel and the cowardly and criminal firing at Israeli civilians will lead to a deepening of the economic and strategic damage it pays and to the collapse of its capabilities,” Katz added.

 

The fires caused by the attack on South Pars were quickly put down, but Iranian media reported after Katz’ statement that a second petrochemical facility was struck.

 

“A few minutes ago, the Marvdasht Petrochemical Complex was targeted by an American-Zionist enemy attack,” the Fars news agency reported, noting that a fire there was also put down.

 

Two days earlier, United States President Donald Trump issued a new 48-hour ultimatum, warning that energy facilities in Iran will be attacked.

 

“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out – 48 hours before all hell will reign (sic) down on them,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Glory be to GOD!”

 

Later, Reuters reported that Israel is preparing to attack Iranian energy facilities but is awaiting a green light from the U.S.

 

As Trump’s ultimatum nears its end, Iran conveyed its response to a U.S. proposal for ending the war to Pakistan, rejecting a ceasefire and emphasizing the necessity of a permanent end to the war, according to the official IRNA news agency.

 

Iran’s response consists of ten clauses, including an end to conflicts in the region, a protocol for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, lifting of sanctions and reconstruction, the agency added.

American forces rescued an airman whose F-15E fighter jet was shot down over Iran,but the uncertain fate of a second crew member prompted a risky search operation in the country, U.S. and Israeli officials said on Friday.

 

Another U.S. Air Force combat plane crashed in the Persian Gulf region at about the same time the F-15E was shot down, according to two U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters. The lone pilot in that plane, an A-10 Warthog, was rescued. The officials provided scant details about the A-10 crash, including how and where it happened beyond saying it was near the Strait of Hormuz.

 

President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have boasted in recent days that U.S. and Israeli strikes have decimated the Iranian regime and military. Mr. Hegseth said earlier this week that the United States had achieved such control of Iran’s skies that it was flying B-52 bombers directly over Iranian territory for the first time since the war began.

 

But the downing of the F-15E and the damage to the A-10 underscores how a weakened Iranian military can still fight back with a limited but still lethal arsenal of missiles and drones.

 

The loss of the F-15E Strike Eagle is the first known instance of an American combat aircraft going down in hostile territory in the monthlong U.S.-Israeli war in Iran. Three Air Force F-15Es were shot down by friendly fire over Kuwait on March 2, and all six crew members in that episode ejected safely.

 

The U.S. military’s Central Command keeps multiple task forces set up near Iran for search and rescue operations in the event that American warplanes are shot down, including in both Iraq and Syria, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to share operational details.

 

But such an operation is extremely dangerous because Iran still retains antiaircraft weapons and, without the support of U.S. troops on the ground, the loss of recovery aircraft to hostile fire can turn an already difficult situation into a catastrophe.

 

On Friday, a U.S. UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter involved in the rescue efforts for the F-15E was hit by ground fire but was able to keep flying and escaped safely, U.S. and Israeli officials said.

 

Open source images show U.S. military aircraft, primarily transport helicopters and cargo planes, over Iran. U.S. forces would not launch this type of a mission without verified crew contact or an active ejection seat beacon, a U.S. fighter pilot said. The pilot spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe current military operations.

 

Rescue operations are also inherently dangerous because additional American service members are put at risk over hostile territory. In June 2005, a rescue mission that was part of an operation called Red Wings went horribly wrong. Rescuers were sent after a team of four U.S. Navy SEALs who had been ambushed by Taliban forces in eastern Afghanistan. A rescue helicopter was shot down, killing 16 service members.

 

In an address to the nation on Wednesday night, Mr. Trump said the United States was on track to complete its military objectives in Iran soon.

 

“Over the next two to three weeks, we’re going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong,” the president said, promising intense bombing.
