Man in court charged with planning to kill Dutch princesses

A 33-year-old man has appeared in court in The Hague charged with threatening the lives of two of the three Dutch princesses.

During the preliminary hearing, Anne Romke van der H denied via his lawyer that he wanted to kill princess Amalia and her sister Alexia. He was arrested in February after a hotel he was staying in called the police because he would not stop screaming about killing people from the balcony of his room, the AD reported.

Police found two axes with their names and“Sieg Heil”carved into the handles in his room, along with a note listing their names and the word“bloedbad”– although these were just three of the many words on the piece of paper, the public prosecutor admitted in court.

The prosecutor also said Van der H had said during a police interview that he believed he was in a romantic relationship with Amalia. The axes, he told police, were needed to go on survival training with Amalia.

His lawyer told the court that Van der H had “absolutely no intention of harming the princesses” and said“bloedbad 400”was the name of the“training mission in Poland”. He asked the court to release his client from custody so he could undergo psychiatric treatment, the AD said.

The court sided with the public prosecutor, who told the court that the suspect had been in a clinic last year and said that he was “not afraid to stab people”. He had also been spotted near the palace gardens, which was “serious enough” to merit being remanded in custody, the court said.

Van der H has also been charged with verbally insulting several police officers in different incidents.

The next pro forma hearing is on July 27.

National war memorial in Amsterdam daubed with red paint

The national war memorial on the Dam in central Amsterdam was sprayed withredpaint in the early hours of Monday morning, just hours before the Remembrance Day commemorations.

The monument, where the king and queen and other dignitaries will lay wreaths on Monday evening, takes center stage in the annual televised event, in which the Dutch remember their war dead with two-minutes silence.

Cleaners were out in force on Monday morning to remove the paint, which included the word“genocide”.

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema condemned the action as an “unbelievably cowardly act” in a message on social media. Prime minister Rob Jetten described it as “idiotic and completely unacceptable”.

This is especially the case on May 4, Jetten said on social media. “Today, let us be united and reflect together in silence,” he said.

There have been continued efforts by some campaigners to widen the scope of the May 4 commemorations to remember all victims of war.

Last year the monument was attacked with red paint during a large pro-Palestine demonstration in the capital.

Police said later on Monday morning they were looking for three suspects caught on camera defacing the monument.

The Netherlands remembered its war dead with two minutes’ silence at 8pm on Monday evening.

Thousands of people packed into Dam square in Amsterdam city centre for the ceremony at the national war memorial, where king Willem-Alexander and queen Maxima, prime minister Rob Jetten and other dignitaries and military chiefs laid wreaths in memory of those who died.

According to the organising committee, some 16,000 people were at the main ceremony in the Dutch capital, but there were smaller ceremonies at memorials all over the country.

A group of some 20 activists arrived at the Dam before the main ceremony but were asked by police to put away their banners stating “never again means now”.

“I don’t understand why. This is so subtle,” said pro-Palestine activist Frank van der Linde. “We do not need to disturb the peace.” Van der Linde was later escorted away by police.

The monument itself had been cleaned from the red paint which had been sprayed across its base in the early hours of Monday morning. Police are looking for three people responsible for daubing the memorial, who were caught on film cycling away from the site.

At 8pm the crowd fell silent for two minutes. As is traditional in the Netherlands, public transport came to a standstill, there were no take-offs and landings at Schiphol airport and cafes and restaurants all over the country paused serving and talking.

Earlier in the evening, Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema had called for more focus on the role of women during war. “Women are never on the sidelines, they are at the front,” she said in a speech ahead of a silent march from the Museumplein to the Dam.

“They are there as soldiers, as doctors, as journalists, as mothers, as defenders of freedom in the widest sense of the word,” she said. “And in the Netherlands, women were often the focal point of the resistance.”

Women’s bodies and sexuality still have a central role in war, she said. “Systematic rape and belittling, forced sterilisation and abortion – they all took place during the Holocaust and in countless conflicts since then.”

On Tuesday, the Netherlands celebrates Liberation Day, with parties, festivals and neighbourhood communal meals all over the country.

Norway’s largest Viking Age coin hoard has been discovered: "Truly exceptional"

The metal detectors searching for coins in a field in eastern Norway still haven’t stopped beeping.

"This is completely unprecedented," says May-Tove Smiseth. "It's absolutely incredible."

Smiseth is an archaeologist responsible for metal detector finds in Innlandet County Municipality.

When detectorists Vegard Sørlie and Rune Sætre found 19 silver coins in a field near Rena in eastern Norway, they realised their search had to stop. Archaeologists needed to be brought in.

"I jokingly said it would be nice if we found a few more coins to make the discovery even bigger," Smiseth tells Science Norway.

"But the detectors never stopped beeping!"….cut

Truly exceptional

There, they were received by professor and coin expert Svein Harald Gullbekk.

"This is extraordinary," Gullbekk tells Science Norway.

So far, it appears that the treasure dates from the end of the Viking Age. It was likely buried in the ground in Innlandet sometime around 1050, according to the professor.

"We have previously found Viking Age coin hoards containing around 2,000 coins, but never more than3,000.They have broken a barrier here. This is truly exceptional. Truly exceptional," he says.
