Iran rebukes US for expecting ‘letter of surrender’

Tehran’s conditions for ending the conflict are the bare minimum, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has said

US President Donald Trump’s rejection of Tehran’s peace terms suggests that he will accept nothing short of surrender, according to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.

The US and Iran remain engaged in indirect negotiations following the fragile ceasefire announced last month after weeks of military action. Trump has repeatedly dismissed Iranian proposals as unacceptable, claiming that Tehran had suffered a military defeat and must agree to American conditions to end the crisis.

“When a party directly involved in war, blockade, sanctions, and threats of force rejects Iran’s response simply because it is not a letter of surrender, it becomes obvious that the issue is not peace but the imposition of political will through intimidation and pressure,” Gharibabadi wrote on X on Tuesday, without mentioning Trump by name.

The diplomat said Tehran’s demands – including compensation for damage caused since the US and Israel attacked Iran in late February, guarantees against future aggression, and recognition of Iran’s sovereign rights – represent “the minimum necessary for any serious and durable arrangement under the UN Charter.”

Washington has repeatedly demanded that Iran fully halt uranium enrichment, restore unrestricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and accept additional security-related conditions as part of a settlement.

Tehran, however, has insisted on maintaining control over the strategically vital waterway and preserving the maritime toll system introduced during the conflict as part of its defense strategy. It also insists that peaceful use of atomic energy is its right under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

As diplomatic efforts mediated by Pakistan stalled, the Trump administration launched a naval blockade of Iranian ports, further disrupting global energy markets.

Amid speculation that the US could resume large-scale military action, Trump warned last week that people would know the ceasefire had collapsed when they see “one big glow coming out of Iran.”

Trump’s delayed China visit underway

The US president is currently visiting China, reducing the likelihood of an immediate escalation of the Iran conflict during the trip. The visit had originally been planned for March 31 to April 2 but was postponed amid uncertainty surrounding the war in the Middle East.

More cases of hantavirus coming – WHO chief

The organization insists that the outbreak will not become “another Covid”

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that “we might see more cases” of the deadly Andes strain of hantavirus emerge in the coming days, after an 11th case was recorded.

The virus has killed three people who left Argentina on a cruise ship last month, and infected eight others. The most recent case was confirmed by the Spanish Health Ministry on Tuesday, and involves a passenger who had been quarantined in a military hospital in Madrid after traveling on the ship.

“At the moment, there is no sign that we are seeing the start of a larger outbreak, but of course the situation could change and, given the long incubation period of the virus, it’s possible we might see more cases in the coming weeks,” Ghebreyesus said at a press conference in Madrid on Tuesday.

Ghebreyesus thanked Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez for showing “compassion and solidarity” by allowing the ship, the Dutch-flagged MV Hondius, to dock at Spain’s Canary Islands on Monday. From the Canaries, passengers were evacuated to their home countries, where authorities were urged by Tedros to keep them quarantined for 42 days.

Hantaviruses are a family of viruses carried by rodents, and spread to humans through contact with their droppings, urine, or saliva. The Andes strain is the only variant known to spread from human to human, and causes hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HPS) in those it infects.

After a long incubation period of between six and eight weeks, patients typically experience flu-like symptoms that can develop into heart problems, hypertension, and buildup of fluid in the lungs and chest cavity. The Andes strain of hantavirus has a fatality rate of around 38%.

On Saturday, Tedros stressed that “the current public health risk from hantavirus remains low,” and that the outbreak would not become “another Covid.”

The MV Hondius left Argentina carrying 147 passengers and crew from 23 countries. So far, every confirmed case has involved someone who traveled on the ship. Twenty British nationals are in isolation in the UK, 14 Spaniards are quarantined at the military hospital in Madrid, and five French citizens are being monitored in Paris. One of them, a 65-year-old woman, developed serious symptoms and was placed on a ventilator on Tuesday, French authorities said. Twelve Dutch health workers have also been quarantined after incorrectly handling the bodily fluids of a hantavirus patient.

Out of 17 Americans evacuated from the ship, one who tested positive for the virus will be quarantined, while the others will be permitted to go home after a brief checkup. Tedros has warned that this approach “may have risks.”

Isreal needs to move toward a future where it moves into partnership with the United states instead of simply receiving aid, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday.

During an interview broadcast on the CBS show “60 Minutes,” Netanyahu was asked by interviewer Major Garrett if he thought it was “time for the state of Israel to reexamine and possibly reset its financial relationship to the United States? “

“Absolutely. And I’ve said this to President Trump. I’ve said it in– to our own people. Their jaws drop,” Netanyahu said in a video posted to X.

“What I’m saying is that I want to draw down to zero the American financial support, the financial component of the military cooperation that we have. Because we receive — we received $3.8 billion a year,” he said.

“I think that it’s time that we weaned ourselves from the remaining military support,” he said in the video in a section edited from a later part of the interview. In a transcript of the interview, he said his goal was to go “from aid to partnership.”

Jumping to another section of the interview, the social media post shows Netanyahu calling for a gradual change in the relationship.

“I said, let’s start now and do it over the next decade, over the next 10 years, but I want to start now. I don’t want to wait for the next Congress. I want to start now,” he said.

The transcript noted that after that comment, Netanyahu said, “But the most important thing, you know, General Keane, who was head of one of your intelligence services said, ‘Of what Israel gave to the United States just on intel, it’s worth five CIAs.’ Now, I don’t know if it’s worth five CIAs or one CIA. I respect the CIA a lot. But in tangible matters, Israel is your best ally. It’s the only one that really provides you with gems of intelligence, shares our incredible technology, appreciates every penny that you gave us, deeply appreciates it.”

“You know, if you go in Israel today, it’s not like other countries. Like, everybody’s pro-American because we appreciate what America stands for. We appreciate the aid that was given. We appreciate what is happening now. White House counterterror chief links Tucker Carlson to extremism

Sebastian Gorka has accused Carlson of joining the ranks of violent left-wing radicals

US President Donald Trump’s counterterrorism director has suggested that two of the president’s loudest critics – Tucker Carlson and Nick Fuentes – are considered potential left-wing threats by the White House.

The White House released its National Strategy for Counterterrorism last week, which labels “Narcoterrorists and Transnational Gangs, Legacy Islamist Terrorists, [and] Violent Left-Wing Extremists, including Anarchists and Anti-Fascists” as the three most pressing terror threats to the US.

The inclusion of “Violent Left-Wing Extremists” is no surprise, given that the strategy was released after three assassination attempts against Trump and the public execution of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk, and after Trump’s National Security Presidential Memorandum NPSM-7 identified “anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity” as indicators of potential “violent and terroristic activities.”

The report makes no mention of right-wing terrorism. However, a comment by its author, Sebastian Gorka, which flew under the radar last week, suggests that some of the president’s former allies are now considered national security threats.

Speaking to Breitbart editor Alex Marlow on Friday, Gorka was asked whether he regards “right-wing extremism” as “a threat at all.”

“I’m not sure that Nick Fuentes or Tucker Carlson are conservatives,” Gorka replied. “If you are lauding Sharia law, if you are saying that there are Muslim states that seem to be better qualitatively than America in terms of freedom and prosperity, I’m not sure that means you’re part of the conservative movement. So if you remove those individuals and you understand that they’re not conservatives, what’s left?”

Gorka’s comment implies that, stripped of their “conservative” credentials, Fuentes and Carlson are the kind of left-wing extremists that the Trump administration will target.

Nick Fuentes is a hardline nationalist and opponent of Trump, whose inflammatory comments – “Jews are running society, Women need to shut the f**k up, and Blacks need to be imprisoned for the most part.” – saw him banned from every major social media platform in 2020. He has since been reinstated on X, and his daily livestreams sometimes draw hundreds of thousands of viewers.

“How dare you speak that way on Easter morning to the country?” Carlson said in a monologue on his podcast. “Who do you think you are? You’re tweeting out the f-word on Easter morning.”

Trump responded by declaring Carlson an enemy of the MAGA movement, describing him as a “flailing fool” who should “see a good psychiatrist.”

Who else has Trump fallen out with?

Trump has fallen out with several prominent right-wing media personalities over the war with Iran, including Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones. In a lengthy social media post in April, he called these figures “nut jobs” and “troublemakers” who “think it is wonderful for Iran, the number one state sponsor of terror, to have a nuclear weapon.”

The era of anonymous satellite internet is rapidly ending. Two Israeli-owned companies have developed technology capable of locating and identifying users of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service.

A recent investigation revealed these firms, TargetTeam and Rayzone, exclusively market their systems to government bodies.

This technology does not hack into Starlink or intercept its traffic.

Instead, it maps the locations of Starlink terminals globally, exposing the physical locations of users connecting to the internet.

This capability addresses a growing demand from states seeking to monitor satellite communications.

"For people living under internet shutdowns, blockades and active conflict – from Sudan to Myanmar to Iran – satellite services like Starlink are often the last remaining channel to call for help, document rights violations and tell the world what is happening," Amnesty International's Security Lab stated.

Starlink has reshaped internet connectivity by providing access independent of national infrastructure.

This independence has made it an essential tool in conflict zones and areas with restricted internet access.

However, the same features that protect civilians also shield criminals and terrorist organizations.

Sales representatives for the Israeli firms noted their systems can locate vessels that turn off their transmissions.

"The ship can hide, but the crew still needs porn and TikTok," a salesman stated, highlighting the use of Starlink by drug cartels and smugglers.

TargetTeam, a Cyprus-based company owned by Israelis, developed a system called Stargetz.

Sales materials indicate Stargetz can track nearly one million Starlink terminals worldwide.

During a demonstration, the system displayed an interactive map showing terminals across the Middle East, Asia, and offshore clusters.

The dashboard claimed to monitor one million terminals providing internet to 5.5 million devices.

Approximately 200,000 of these terminals were reportedly "deanonymized," revealing identifying details about the devices or users.

Rayzone, another Israeli firm, sells a similar monitoring system.

This system is marketed as part of a suite of intelligence tools, including a big-data analytics product capable of deanonymizing users.

Rayzone's sales are overseen by Israel's Defense Ministry.

This development marks a shift from previous satellite surveillance methods.

Older systems, like Verint's "Starsky," intercepted traditional satellite phone communications.

Starlink's diffused network of low-Earth orbit satellites rendered that approach obsolete, driving firms to develop new tracking methods.

AI Safety Institute Debuts with Big-Name Backers and a Censorship Agenda

Every major speaker at the Copenhagen summit has a resume built on telling platforms what to take down.

Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute arrived at the Danish Parliament this week and the guest list is stacked with people who think you can’t be trusted to speak freely online.

Hillary Clinton, Ursula von der Leyen, former Biden Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Ofcom chief Melanie Dawes, and the head of an organization that wants to break end-to-end encryption are all gathering at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen to announce what they’d like to do next about AI and children.

The “next” part is where it gets concerning. The Youth AI Safety Institute, launched by Common Sense Media on May 5, says it will “complement efforts by regulators and policymakers to translate frameworks such as the EU AI Act, the Digital Services Act, and the UK Online Safety Act into practical protections for child-safe AI.”

Those three censorship laws represent the most aggressive government-directed speech suppression regimes currently operating in the Western world. The Institute isn’t questioning them. In fact, it wants to help implement them and push them further.

The summit, titled “Keeping Our Children and Families Safe in the AI Era,” is co-hosted by Common Sense Media, Save the Children Denmark, and Margrethe Vestager, who spent years as the European Commission’s executive vice president building the regulatory architecture that now lets EU officials order platforms to delete content.

More than 200 policymakers, tech executives, and civil society figures are expected. King Frederik X of Denmark is giving the opening address. The Duchess of Edinburgh will attend. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is on the bill.

And so is Pinterest CEO Bill Ready, whose company helped pay for the Institute’s creation.

Who’s Funding This?

The Youth AI Safety Institute is bankrolled by a mix of philanthropic donors and deep industry money.

The industry funders are Anthropic, the OpenAI Foundation, and Pinterest. All three make AI products that the Institute will evaluate and rate. The Institute says it “maintains complete editorial independence over published results.” But the structural incentive is obvious enough to name. Companies are funding an organization that will publish safety ratings of their competitors, define what “safe” means, and push governments to enforce those definitions through law.

John Giannandrea, a former senior AI executive at both Apple and Google, sits on the Institute’s Board of Advisors. So does Murthy, who has publicly advocated for digital ID systems to combat online “misinformation” and worked directly with Big Tech companies to target speech the government classified as false during the Biden administration.

Common Sense Media CEO James P. Steyer framed the project by citing the Institute’s own polling. “Eight percent—that is the share of parents across the four countries we surveyed who are confident AI companies are prioritising teen safety,” Steyer said.

“For more than two decades, Common Sense Media has built the standards, ratings and research that families trust through every major technological transformation young people have lived through, from streaming to social media. Our Youth AI Safety Institute applies that work to AI: independent standards, real testing and clear accountability for the products young people use. Copenhagen is where that mission begins in Europe.”

The polling, conducted across Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Poland by Common Sense Media, SocialSphere, and YouGov, found that 77% of parents want strong laws governing AI. The press materials use that number to argue for “stronger laws and child-centred AI governance,” which in the context of this particular coalition means more age verification, more content restrictions, and more government involvement in deciding what AI systems are allowed to say.

The content in question, however, is a depiction of Jesus Christ on the cross. When Breitbart News asked the tech giant to comment on its treatment of TruPlay, it backtracked, calling the decision an “error.”

Breitbart News spoke to Brent Dusing, the founder and CEO of TruPlay, who says it “transforms screen time with safe, bible-based games and stories,” about Google’s treatment of his company. Dusing draws a sharp comparison between Google’s treatment of TruPlay, which aims to bring gaming and entertainment to children with a specific Christian message, with its primary competitor, Roblox, which is allowed to operate without any obstacles despite showing “blood everywhere and dismembered bodies” in games on its platform. According to Dusing, Google’s AI system has been “designed with blatant intent to block Christianity.”

Google rejected @TruPlayGames from the Play Store.

EU Chief Says Bloc Looking to Introduce Law Banning Social Media for Children by Summer

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has signalled that Brussels may seek to introduce legislation for a blanket ban on social media access for teenagers throughout the entire bloc by the summer.

Speaking at the European Summit on Artificial Intelligence and Children in Copenhagen, EU boss Von der Leyen said that plans for a ban on children using social media could be put forward in the coming months.

“We are witnessing the lightning speed at which technology is advancing – and how it penetrates every corner of childhood and adolescence,” she said per Euronews.

“We all know that sustainable change does not happen overnight. But if we are slow and hesitant, it will be another entire generation of children that pays the price,” von der Leyen added.

The German politician suggested the EU’s Digital COVID Pass could serve as the basis for an age-verification app required for social media platforms. EU lawmakers have previously voted in favour of using the EU’s corona pass app as the framework for the bloc’s incoming Digital Identity Wallet, which is said to be on track for release later this year.

However, according to Euronews, some member states have expressed hesitancy about using the same platform for age verification, given that it would be much more widely used and the ongoing privacy concerns over the app.

Alternatively, the bloc could adopt a model similar to that being mooted in France, which is likely to mandate social media companies, such as Instagram and TikTok, to perform age verification themselves later this year for children under 15.

It is unclear at what age the Commission is aiming to ban social media use; however, other countries, such as Australia and Indonesia, have recently imposed bans on children under 16.

The EU’s unelected governing body has already created a panel of experts to study the impacts on children of social media, including addiction and anxiety, and potential ways to prevent such outcomes.

“Without pre-empting the panel’s findings, I believe we must consider a social media delay. Depending on the results, we could come forward with a legal proposal this summer,” von der Leyen said.

On top of considering a ban for children, Brussels has already invoked its Digital Services Act censorship apparatus to scrutinise social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat to determine whether they are doing enough on their own to safeguard children.

Companies which fall afoul of the censorship act face fines of up to 6 per cent of their annual worldwide turnover and could even be banned entirely from the bloc for continued violations.

Kiev Forces Spotted With China’s Latest MANPADS (Photos)

China’s latest FN-16 man-portable air defense system (MANPADS) has made a surprise appearance in Ukraine with Kiev forces.

It features an infrared, ultraviolet dual-spectrum seeker with better all-aspect attack capability and better resistance against electronic countermeasures. It has an engagement range of six kilometers, and an altitude of four kilometers.

It is unclear how exactly Ukraine received the MANPADS. One possibility is that they were supplied by Pakistan, Bangladesh or Cambodia, which are the only known operators other than China.

Another possibility is that the United States supplied the FN-16s to Ukraine after seizing a shipment of the system somewhere.

Last month CNN reported, citing U.S. intelligence assessments, that China is preparing to deliver new air defenses, specifically MANPADS, to Iran in a matter of weeks. SouthFront speculated at the time that the systems in question could be the FN-16.

Soon after the report, President Donald Trump said that the military intercepted a ship carrying a “gift” to the Islamic Republic from China.

While there is no evidence backing this theory, the fact that Ukraine openly showed off the new MANPADS indicates that it didn’t get them by its own efforts.

Still, it is important to note that this is not the first time Kiev forces have been spotted with Chinese-made MANPADS. Just last year, Ukrainian soldiers were seen armed with FN-6, an older version of the FN-16 but still very capable. Although the FN-6 features an older generation infrared homing seeker, it still has a very similar engagement range and altitude to the FN-16.

The FN-6 is more widely available, especially in the Middle East and North Africa where it could even be found on the black market.

In any case, the fact that such advanced MANPADS are already finding their way to Ukraine, whose black market mainly exports to Europe, is very worrying to say the least.

Former Tennessee Sheriff’s Deputy Pleads Guilty to Production of Child Sexual Abuse Material

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Johnathan Nathaniel Allen, 27, of Chattanooga Tenn., has pleaded guilty to production of child sexual abuse material.*

Evidence obtained in the investigation revealed that in September 2024 Allen used accounts on Reddit and Text Me to contact a 13-year-old girl in South Carolina.

Allen posed as a 14-year-old boy named “Josh” on the applications and pressured the minor to produce sexually explicit material at his request. At the time, Allen was 25 years old and had been a deputy with a county sheriff’s office in Tennessee since 2021.

On Reddit, Allen navigated to a forum that referenced teenagers in the title. He started a conversation with one of the minors and then directed the conversation to text messages. There, Allen used a virtual phone number he obtained through the TextMe platform. The minor showed Allen pictures of her stuffed animals and he “begged,” according to evidence, for pictures of the minor. He told the minor she could trust him and that he would not share the files. Allen caused the production of sexually explicit content depicting the minor. Allen told the victim that he was proud of her, and that she learned something new she could do. He requested additional sex acts, and he told her to delete the messages so no one else would see them.

When agents searched Allen’s home, they found a phone with Reddit, Text Me, and the fake “Josh” identity. Agents also found 19 communications on Allens’ phone with the minor, including numerous calls to the minor after law enforcement had seized the minor’s phone. Data from the Reddit and Text Me account, including pictures shared by the user, all resolved to Allen. Agents also found clothes in Allen’s bedroom that “Josh” was wearing when it shared sexually explicit images on the platform. One of the pictures shared by the Reddit user when posing as a teenager was a picture of Allen when he was younger.

“This outrageous criminal conduct, especially from someone sworn to protect society’s most vulnerable, its children, will be met with the full force of the federal government,” said U.S. Attorney Bryan Stirling for the District of South Carolina. “We’re grateful to the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the York County Sheriff’s Office and the Hamilton County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Office for their work to bring this defendant to justice.”

Allen faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years and up to 30 years in federal prison. He will also be required to register as a sex offender, he faces a fine of up to $250,000, restitution, and a term of up to lifetime supervision to follow the term of imprisonment. United States District Judge Sherri A. Lydon accepted the guilty plea and will sentence Allen after receiving and reviewing a sentencing report prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.

Administrator of charity program for Virginia state employees sentenced for stealing over $1.5M

RICHMOND, Va. – A Texas woman was sentenced today to four years in prison for stealing more than $1.5 million from the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC), the officially sanctioned non-profit charity fundraising program for Virginia’s more than 120,000 state government employees. This case is part of the Trump Administration’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.

According to court documents, from 2017 through 2023, the Virginia Department of Human Resources Management employed Linda Natelle Brown, 43, of Houston, to administer the CVC. The CVC promised that Virginia state government employees could safely and easily donate to their preferred causes throughout the year via credit card payments, mailed checks, and by payroll remittances deducted directly from employee paychecks. Brown was supposed to steward these funds and make corresponding payments to charities designated by donors.

Between January 2019 and August 2023, Brown embezzled more than $1.5 million of the over $5.3 million donated by state government employees. Instead of paying the charities designated by donors, Brown stole this money for personal spending.

For example, Brown paid $10,400 in fraud proceeds for a plastic surgery procedure. Brown also used stolen charity funds to pay for a “fish pedicure” spa in Las Vegas. She fraudulently used charity funds for multiple flight tickets to destinations around the country, stays at luxury hotels, a luxury apartment in Houston, designer clothing and shoes, beauty and cosmetic products, and food and alcohol.

Brown also concealed her embezzlement from the CVC by attempting to replenish the funds she had stolen with a $494,469 U.S. Small Business Administration-backed business loan, which Brown obtained by making false statements to the lender.

The Court entered a money judgment forfeiture order of $1,581,161.

Perfectus Aluminum Inc. and Related Companies Agree to Pay $549.5 Million to Settle False Claims Act Allegations Relating to Evaded Customs Duties

LOS ANGELES – California-based companies Perfectus Aluminum Inc., Perfectus Aluminum Acquisitions LLC and four affiliated warehousing companies have agreed to pay a total of $549.5 million to resolve allegations that they violated the False Claims Act by knowingly and improperly evading, or conspiring to evade, antidumping and countervailing duties owed to the United States on aluminum extrusions imported from the People’s Republic of China (China).

“The President’s America First Trade Policy defends this country’s national and economic security and ensures compliance with trade laws, including the payment of tariffs intended to level the playing field for U.S. manufacturers,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “Those who try to game the system harm American businesses and workers and will be brought to justice.”

To enter goods into the United States, an importer must declare, among other things, the country of origin of the goods, the value of the goods, whether the goods are subject to duties, and the amount of duties owed. Antidumping duties protect against foreign companies “dumping” products on U.S. markets at prices below cost, while countervailing duties offset foreign government subsidies. During the relevant time period, aluminum extrusions from China were subject to both antidumping and countervailing duties.

South Puget Sound former financial advisor sentenced to three years in prison for stealing nearly $1 million from elderly client

Misled widow promising her better investment returns while stealing from her bank accounts

Seattle – A 57-year-old Fox Island, Washington, man was sentenced late yesterday in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to three years in prison for his scheme to steal from an elderly client who trusted him as a financial advisor, announced First Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd. John S. Winslow was indicted just over a year ago on four counts of wire fraud, two counts of mail fraud, four counts of money laundering, and four counts of making and subscribing a false tax return. Winslow was a financial advisor at a national financial services firm until he was fired following revelations he had stolen over $920,000 in life savings and inheritance from a former client, a widow in her 70’s. “This crime was personal,” U.S. District Judge Tiffany M. Cartwright. “Mr. Winslow had a longstanding relationship with this victim.”

“Over about four years, this defendant stole more than $900,000 from an elderly victim. First, he ingratiated himself with the victim. He took her grocery shopping and bought her flowers and chocolate. Then, he took advantage of her trust, her cognitive decline and isolation,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd. “He used the victim’s funds to live with luxuries – buying an island home, installing a hot tub, and purchasing a new car. All the while, the victim scrimped and lived on a limited budget. This prison sentence holds him accountable.”

“Lies, deceit, and fraud are not things that should be associated with any financial advisor trusted to protect a client’s hard-earned money. However, Mr. Winslow chose exactly these things when he callously stole from his client,” said Special Agent in Charge Carrie Nordyke, IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), Seattle Field Office. “IRS-CI will continue to pursue justice against those who choose to commit such financial crimes.”

According to records in the case, Winslow moved funds out of the victim’s brokerage accounts with the financial services firm and into her outside bank account in multiple transactions. He did this to conceal his fraud by placing the victim’s funds outside of the firm’s surveillance system. From the victim’s outside bank account, the funds were transferred into Winslow’s bank account, again in multiple transactions. Winslow used his trusted status with the victim to further the fraud. He falsely claimed to the victim that if she transferred money to him, he would repay her at a higher interest rate than what she was getting from her banks. He visited the victim at her home and instructed the victim to call the bank and put the call on speaker. He then told the victim what she should tell the bank. Winslow then used the victim’s funds for his own benefit.

Former Gymnastics Coach Pleads Guilty to Production of Child Sexual Abuse Material

Hattiesburg, MS – A former gymnastics coach pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to three counts of production of child sexual abuse material after he secretly videotaped gymnasts in the bathroom of the gym where he coached.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Sean Gardner, 39, of West Des Moines, Iowa, used his access to children as a gymnastics coach in Purvis, Mississippi to surreptitiously record minors changing clothes and using the bathroom. The investigation began after reports were made to the U.S. Center for SafeSport alleging that Gardner, while working as a gymnastics coach, engaged in inappropriate conduct involving minor athletes. SafeSport forwarded the allegations to law enforcement, which led to a joint investigation by local and federal authorities.

During the execution of a search warrant at Gardner’s Iowa residence, law enforcement seized multiple electronic devices. A forensic examination revealed numerous images and videos depicting minor children – some under the age of 12 – in states of undress that appeared to have been recorded using a concealed camera. Investigators determined that several of the recordings were made in a restroom at a gym in Purvis, Mississippi, where Gardner previously worked. The evidence included multiple files dated as early as 2017 and 2018, and investigators identified several of the minors depicted as former gymnastics students.

Gardner pleaded guilty to three counts of production of child sexual abuse material. He is scheduled to be sentenced on October 14, 2026, and faces a maximum penalty of 90 years in prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Former New York State Judge and Brooklyn Real Estate Investor Charged with Wire Fraud Conspiracy

Sam Sprei and Edward Harold King Allegedly Perpetrated Schemes to Defraud Real Estate Investors of Millions of Dollars

Earlier today, at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn, a complaint was unsealed charging Sam Sprei, also known as “Yechiel Sprei,” “Shimon Sprei,” and “Eli Shapiro,” and Edward Harold King, a former Kings County Supreme Court Justice, with wire fraud conspiracy. Both defendants were arrested this morning and are scheduled to make their initial appearance this afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Clay H. Kaminsky.

Joseph Nocella, Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and Harry T. Chavis, Jr., Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, New York (IRS-CI New York), announced the arrests and charges.

“As alleged, the defendants stole millions of dollars from investors by cynically leveraging King’s position as a sitting judge to lend false legitimacy to supposed investment opportunities,” stated United States Attorney Nocella. “Today’s arrests demonstrate that this Office will hold accountable those who exploit victims for their own financial gain. Holding corrupt individuals accountable for the abuse of public trust will always be a priority of our Office.”

As set forth in court filings, Sprei and King perpetrated numerous schemes to defraud, including multiple schemes to defraud real estate investors in which they solicited the victims’ funds in fictitious investment opportunities, represented to the victims that their invested funds would be returnable on demand if the victims decided to end their involvement in the investments, and then later refused to return the money based on false excuses and converted a significant portion of the victims’ funds for their own use.

For example, in November 2024, Spreipresented two investors (the Investors) with an opportunity to purchase commercial real estate located in Freehold, New Jersey (the Property). Sprei told the Investors that to take advantage of this opportunity, they would first have to show “proof of liquidity” by depositing funds in escrow. In addition, Sprei told the Investors that King was an independent escrow agent and a New York judge. Sprei also made numerous misrepresentations designed to deceive the Investors, including that if the Investors decided not to pursue the investment, they could so advise the escrow agent and would receive the full amount deposited within two business days. Based on these representations from Sprei, the Investors wired a total of $6.5 million to a bank account in King’s name pursuant to written escrow agreements signed by the Investors and King. In the days immediately following the wire transfers from the Investors to the bank account in King’s name, millions of dollars of the Investors’ funds were withdrawn or transferred to a bank account in Sprei’s name. When the Investors subsequently wrote to King to request the return of their deposited funds, King provided false excuses as to why he could not return the $6.5 million. Months later, King and Sprei returned to the Investors $1.5 million, representing only a portion of the Investors’ investment. To date, Sprei and King have not returned any further funds to the Investors.
