Trump’s China strategy is closer to Kissinger than Biden

An interview with Xiang Lanxin explores why Trump may seek a broader bargain with China and what it could mean for Taiwan, Russia and the EU

US President Donald Trump’s arrival in China this week is being treated as far more than another diplomatic photo opportunity. Relations between Washington and Beijing remain tense, competition between the two powers stretches across almost every domain, and yet both sides appear increasingly aware that uncontrolled confrontation would carry enormous costs. Against that backdrop, the prospect of a broader geopolitical bargain is once again entering the discussion.

According to Xiang Lanxin, visiting professor at East China Normal University and research fellow at the Stimson Center in Washington, Trump isn’t approaching China in the same ideological spirit that defined the Biden administration. The atmosphere in Washington, he argues, has shifted noticeably.

He spoke to Fyodor Lukyanov, the editor-in-chief of Russia in Global Affairs and research director of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

Israeli West Bank occupation an affront to Nakba Day legacy

Residents say settlement expansion and military operations are forcing more communities from their homes

Palestinians mark 78 years since the Nakba on Friday – one of the largest refugee crises in modern history – as expanding Israeli settlements and military operations are again forcing communities from their homes, RT’s Charlotte Dubenskij reports.

The Nakba, or ‘catastrophe’, was triggered by the mass displacement of Palestinians during the creation of Israel in 1948. A 1947 UN partition plan, adopted with backing from the Soviet Union, called for the creation of separate Jewish and Arab states, but only Israel was established.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, rooted in competing territorial claims, has fueled decades of unrest and wars in the Middle East.

Activists and local residents told RT that pressure on Palestinians is intensifying across areas under Israeli control.

The UN says around 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced in the West Bank since early 2025 amid intensified Israeli military operations, demolitions, and settler violence.

Members of Bedouin communities interviewed by RT described repeated attempts to force them from their land.

“When we first came here, they told us this was Area B, Palestinian land. But then they turned around and told us, no, you are not allowed to stay here either,” one resident said. “Every single day, they come after us trying to force us out.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that prospects for the creation of a Palestinian state were being systematically undermined.

“A process is underway to eliminate even the slightest possibility of creating a Palestinian state, in violation of United Nations decisions,” Lavrov told a news conference.

US And China Agree To Establish Trade And Investment Boards As Trump-Xi Summit Delivers Modest Wins

U.S. and Chinese leaders agreed to establish a new "Board of Trade" and a parallel "Board of Investment" during President Donald Trump’s two-day visit to Beijing - a summit that ended much as it began: with significant pageantry, warm personal rapport between the leaders, and modest, incremental progress on trade. The new boards aim to oversee bilateral purchases, manage trade differences, facilitate deals in non-sensitive sectors (with roughly $30 billion in goods identified), and provide a standing channel to prevent future escalations without constant high-level intervention.

The boards were a pre-summit priority pushed by U.S. officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. They build on preparatory talks in South Korea that produced what both sides described as "generally balanced and positive outcomes." Chinese state media, including Xinhua, highlighted the agreements as part of efforts to expand practical cooperation and maintain stable economic ties.

This development aligns with Xi Jinping’s broader push to reframe the bilateral relationship as one of "constructive strategic stability" - a new guiding vision intended to provide predictability for the next three years and beyond, emphasizing cooperation as the mainstay while allowing for "moderate competition" and "manageable differences." Xi described it as a positive, sound, constant, and enduring stability that should translate into concrete actions.

Trade and Economic Deliverables

Boeing Aircraft: China committed to purchasing 200 Boeing jets, with Trump indicating the order could potentially grow to 750 based on performance. This was the most visible commercial headline, though it fell short of earlier speculation around larger volumes and drew a muted market reaction.

Agriculture and Energy: Progress on expanded U.S. farm product sales (soybeans, beef, and other goods, with reports of commitments up to $10–50 billion in some readouts) and potential energy deals. Xi told accompanying U.S. CEOs that "China’s door will only open wider" to American businesses, signaling greater market access in mutually beneficial areas.

Investment Outlook: Discussions included pathways for Chinese investment into non-sensitive U.S. sectors, with the Board of Investment intended to provide clearer guidelines and reduce uncertainty from national security reviews.

Trump touted "fantastic trade deals" upon departure, while Xi emphasized win-win outcomes and the importance of sustaining momentum in economic ties.

And hey, America apparently needs 500,000 Chinese students in the US, and China should be able to purchase US farmland so that collages and farm prices don't collapse, or something.

With 4,900 AI Data Centers, There's Likely One Coming To Your Neighborhood

As artificial intelligence continues to permeate everyday life, the data centers needed to support the burgeoning technology are popping up across America - many close to residential areas. More than one-third of Americans now live within a few miles of at least one data center.

That proximity means many development projects are not going smoothly, as residents raise questions about the unknown effects on their resources. Both residents and developers who spoke to The Epoch Times pointed to transparency as a key issue.

The developers also said they are working to address residents’ concerns at the planning stage, adding safeguards to reduce water and energy requirements.

Meanwhile, grassroots opposition to data centers is gaining momentum going into the 2026 elections.

Built in Clusters

The United States currently has more than 3,100 data centers in operation and more than 1,800 in various stages of development, according to data provided by infrastructure intelligence and mapping platform Data Center Map.

Virginia, Texas, and California lead the nation in the number of data centers, according to the data. Virginia alone has a combined total of 711 currently operational, under-construction, and planned centers. Texas has a combined total of 544, and California, 333.

These data facilities are typically massive buildings housing information technology infrastructure, data-storage systems, and networking and processing equipment. They also require power subsystems, backup generators, and HVAC and cooling systems to prevent hardware from overheating.

According to a recent Pew Research Center analysis, 87 percent of existing data centers are located in urban regions, while 67 percent of planned data centers are targeted for construction in rural areas.

Iran Says It Has "No Trust" In US, Insists There Is "No Military Solution"

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Friday that Tehran has "no trust" in the United States and remains interested in negotiations only if Washington demonstrates seriousness, as talks aimed at ending the war remain stalled. Speaking to Indian media during the second day of the BRICS foreign ministers meeting in New Delhi, Araghchi said military initiatives are ineffective in resolving regional crises, Turkey Today reported.

“There is no military solution, and the U.S. must understand this reality,” Araghchi said, according to a statement shared by Iran’s Foreign Ministry. “They cannot achieve their goals through military action, but the situation would be different if they pursue diplomacy,” he added.

Araghchi also said the United States and Israel had “tested” Iran at least twice during the conflict.

The Iranian foreign minister said one of the main obstacles during negotiations with Washington has been inconsistent messaging from American officials. Araghchi said contradictory statements, interviews and communications from U.S. officials created deep mistrust between the two sides.

Iran has repeatedly accused Washington of pursuing diplomacy publicly while supporting military pressure against Tehran behind the scenes.

Regional tensions escalated after the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, triggering retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Israel and U.S. allies in the Gulf region.

Although a prolonged ceasefire is currently in effect, negotiations aimed at reaching a permanent settlement have largely stalled.

Commenting on the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said Iran continues to allow passage for “friendly countries” while imposing restrictions on what he described as “enemy ships.”

“The Strait of Hormuz is not closed to friendly countries. Restrictions are for enemy ships,” he said, although it is unclear why Iran then claims Chinese ships had been blocked until yesterday since China remains Iran's largest, if not only, oil export client.

“In recent days, many vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz with the assistance of our naval forces, and this process will continue,” he added.

Araghchi said ships belonging to friendly states and other commercial vessels must coordinate with Iranian armed forces while transiting the strategic waterway.

“The only solution is the complete end of the aggressive war, and afterward we will guarantee the safe passage of every ship,” he said.

He also reiterated Tehran’s position that Iran acted within its right to self-defense following the outbreak of the conflict.

CIA Head Ratcliffe Spotted In Cuba As Trump Refocuses Crosshairs On Havana Communists

We noted on Thursday that, once President Trump's summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded, the Trump team's next focus would likely shift back toward Cuba. That pivot now appears underway. Aboard Air Force One early Friday, while returning stateside, Trump told reporters that "Cuba needs our help," signaling the Caribbean island nation is moving higher on the administration's agenda.

A new AP report offers more insight into how the Trump administration is shifting attention back toward Cuba: CIA Director John Ratcliffe met with officials in Havana on Thursday, reopening a channel for political dialogue between the two countries.

Ratcliffe and top U.S. officials, some of whose faces were blurred in images released by the CIA on X, held high-level talks with Cuba's Interior Minister, the head of Cuban intelligence, and Raúl Castro's grandson, Raulito Rodríguez Castro.

Havana's communist government released a statement noting that the meeting "took place Thursday, May 14, against a backdrop of complex bilateral relations."

AP noted that Cuban officials presented a report to Ratcliffe and his team, claiming to demonstrate that the communist-run island poses no threat to U.S. national security.

Consequently, Havana maintains there are no legitimate grounds for its continued inclusion on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

True colours shinning through!!! - Mush bends over for Israel and now the EU/UK what a fucking weak rat!

Musk’s X Agrees to Help UK Govt Police ‘Hate Speech,’ Will Even Share Data With Regulators.

Elon Musk’s X platform has agreed to help the British government police so-called hate speech after pressure from regulators.

X, owned by Elon Musk, has agreed to help the British government crack down on so-called hate speech online, under pressure from Britain’s media and communications regulator, Ofcom.

Ofcom announced on Friday that the agreement includes a committment to review and assess so-called “hate content,” reported via a “dedicated UK illegal content reporting tool,” within 24 hours on average, and at least 85 percent of reports within 48 hours. X must also engage with “experts” regarding reporting systems for “illegal hate” and “submit performance data to Ofcom on a quarterly basis” to evaluate its compliance. ,

“These commitments are a step forward, but there’s a lot more to do. We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from civil society and other expert organizations to scrutinize these platforms, and we’ll continue working with them extensively to drive forward changes for people in the UK,” said Oliver Griffiths, Ofcom’s Online Safety Group Director.

X’s move to comply with Ofcom’s demands marks a significant climbdown from Musk’s commitment to making the platform a bastion of free speech after he acquired it in late 2022. Notably, Ofcom said in its announcement that it “worked with a range of organizations to gather evidence about suspected illegal terrorist content and illegal hate speech online, including antisemitic and anti-Muslim material,” with some of the organizations in question being highly controversial. For instance, HOPE Not Hate is a George Soros-funded group noted for spreading fake news about acid attacks on Muslims and smearing immigration skeptics, and Tell MAMA has been accused of inflating its data on alleged anti-Muslim incidents.

Republicans Investigate Foreign Influence Ties To American Universities

A group of congressional Republicans are investigating foreign entities aligned with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) allegedly attempting to influence and infiltrate American universities, the Daily Caller exclusively learned.

Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee Chairman Bill Cassidy and some GOP colleagues are looking into nine universities over alleged foreign ties to the CCP, according to a series of letters obtained exclusively by the Caller. Cassidy is joined by Republican Indiana Sen. Jim Banks and Republican Michigan Reps. Tim Walberg and John Moolenaar.

“As you know, American universities conduct highly sensitive, critical research with direct military applications,” the lawmakers wrote in a joint statement. “Therefore, it is very alarming that countries of concern could be gaining access to research with national security implications at your institution by way of gifts and donations.”

“To ensure the safety of the American people and uphold U.S. national security interests, sensitive research and technology must stay out of the hands of our adversaries.”

A new report from the Department of Education found that 34 institutions have been the recipients of hundreds of millions of dollars from foreign entities with links to American adversaries.

For instance, the University of California, Berkeley received $224.5 million in funding from China, according to the funding portal. Massachusetts Institute of Technology has also received $368.6 million from China, the University of California Irvine has received $27.5 million, and the University of Arizona received $64.5 million, according to the portal.

CCP-aligned organizations are known to infiltrate American universities to steal sensitive military research and intellectual property under the guise of international partnership. In one instance reported exclusively by the Daily Caller News Foundation, CCP members enrolled in American universities established party branches on campuses with the support of their Chinese alma maters.

During a House Education and Workforce Committee hearing in March, Walberg detailed several incidents of potential alleged CCP spying on American campuses.

“Last summer there were multiple disturbing instances of potential foreign espionage on U.S. campuses,” Walberg said. “At the University of Michigan students, employees, and faculty have been charged and sentenced for conspiracy and smuggling-related crimes. At Stanford, students were approached by foreign nationals posing as peers in an effort to get students to travel to China and share research.”

The Republican lawmakers sent letters to nine universities Thursday asking for information regarding the various alleged transactions made with “counterparties of concern,” including organizations with ties to adversaries. These universities include Bryant University, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Arizona, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of California Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Portland State University, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and University of California Irvine.

The Daily Caller reached out to the universities for comment.

Israel’s 7 October narrative under fresh scrutiny after army accused of deleting footage

The Israeli army secretly seized and deleted parts of the 7 October security camera footage, according to a report published by Israel Hayom yesterday, in the latest revelation to deepen suspicion over the official Israeli account of the events of that day.

The Hebrew-language daily reported that on the evening of 9 October 2023, a classified reserve unit operating under the Israeli army’s Ground Forces Command arrived at Kibbutz Be’eri and asked members of the kibbutz’s rapid-response squad to hand over the device storing all the community’s security camera recordings. The unit commander told the exhausted residents that he needed the material “to bring the hostages home” and promised it would not be shared and would be returned in full.

No written commitment was given. By the following morning, the officer had left Be’eri with the recordings and headed to the Kirya, the Israeli army’s headquarters complex in Tel Aviv.

According to the report, the classified unit — composed of reservists drawn from elite formations including Sayeret Matkal, Shaldag, Shayetet 13 and Duvdevan, and founded around a decade ago by former officer Yoaz Hendel — “operates in the gray zones,” a reference to covert, legally ambiguous missions that fall outside the army’s regular chain of command and conventional rules of engagement.

On the morning of 7 October, the commander of the unit, identified only as “N,” activated the group on his own initiative and dispatched the teams to collect visual material from security cameras, dashcams and GoPro cameras belonging to Palestinian fighters.

OPINION: Why Israel insists on defending its lies about the October attack

Material seized from Kibbutz Be’eri’s command room was subsequently passed to the Hostages and Missing Persons Families’ Management, to the Israeli army Spokesperson’s Unit and to other unspecified bodies inside the Israeli defence establishment, Israel Hayom reported.

From there, the unit lost control of the footage. Two days after the recordings were handed over, one of the kibbutz security squad members watching television recognised the now-iconic footage of an elderly Palestinian man hobbling on crutches into a Gaza border community.

“At that moment I was seething with rage,” he told the paper. “Because I recognised that the material came from the perimeter fence camera at Be’eri — the same camera whose footage had been handed to the officer.” The footage had been broadcast without the kibbutz’s knowledge or consent.

Residents of Kibbutz Be’eri who reviewed the returned material this week told Israel Hayom that the recordings had been “tampered with” and returned with deletions. The paper noted that it was unable to independently verify the claim, but pointed out that residents’ suspicions had been reinforced by a separate investigation by Israeli journalist Gali Ginat for Uvda, the country’s leading investigative current affairs television programme, which uncovered footage from the Dor Alon petrol station near neighbouring Kfar Aza — footage that the Israeli army had previously insisted no longer existed.

READ: Israel becomes world’s most disliked country, global survey finds

“October 7 is defined by a profound crisis of trust,” one Be’eri resident told the paper. “The decisions to delete materials were made ‘under fluorescent lights’ — it’s a conscious decision, not one made in the chaos of combat. These are recordings that belong to the community, of people from the community, and you simply take them and delete them without giving them back.”

Asked why he believed portions of the footage had been deleted, the resident replied: “The day will come when an investigative commission is established here. The fewer witnesses there are, the less damage certain people in the military will sustain. I know it sounds conspiratorial, but the more I think about it, the more that is the conclusion I reach.”

The disclosure is the latest in a series of revelations that have chipped away at Israel’s official narrative of 7 October.

Virginia Dem Gov Spanberger signs bill banning assault weapons, NRA immediately files lawsuit

The NRA filed lawsuits in both federal and state courts, arguing the law is unconstitutional.

The National Rifle Association is suing Virginia Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger for her signing of a measure to make illegal the buying, selling, importing, manufacturing and/or the transfer of assault weapons in the state.

The NRA filed lawsuits in both federal and state courts, arguing the law is unconstitutional.

Supporters argue the legislation removes "weapons of war" from the streets, making Virginia safer from violence, but opponents argue the law punishes law-abiding citizens, WRIC reported.

“As promised, we are taking Abigail Spanberger to court," the NRA, the Second Amendment rights group said in a statement.

"Throughout the legislative session, the NRA and our members fought Richmond’s radical gun control package tooth and nail. We made it clear that this extreme anti-gun proposal, which bans the new purchase of commonly owned firearms and standard capacity magazines in the Commonwealth, is a blatant violation of Second Amendment rights and an affront to landmark Supreme Court cases."

Other lawsuits are coming. Gun Owners of America and the Virginia Citizens Defense League are planning to file lawsuits on Friday. The Trump administration has also warned it was planning to take legal action if the bill was signed into law.

Why the West Is Replacing Its White Population

The Great Replacement is now almost locked in.

This is not because of a grand conspiracy, a secret “Kalergi Plan,” a deliberate plot by elites to destroy the West through “bio-Leninism,” an attempt to import a new electorate, or any single “demonic” scheme. Nor is it simply the result of excessive “suicidal empathy” or conservative elites refusing to accept race realism or the critique of the equality thesis.

My thesis is that the large-scale demographic replacement of White European populations is the logical and nearly inevitable outcome of the fusion between (i) liberal universalism, which delegitimizes ethnic particularism and prohibits state preference for one culture in favor of diversity and value pluralism, and (ii) post-Fordist (including limbic) capitalist optimization, which demands flexible, low-cost, compliant non-Western labor, expanding global markets, and short-to-medium-term gains. Together, these two self-reinforcing logics have created a dynamic, high-level equilibrium and path-dependent civilizational trap that is quite effective at delivering GDP growth, opportunities for elite status, rewards for loyalty, and moral validation, yet systematically undermines the long-term demographic and cultural foundations of European societies. This system exploits the historically peculiar “WEIRD” psychology of Whites (low ethnocentrism, impersonal trust, impartiality) while empowering groups operating on kin-selection and ethnic nepotism, transitioning from a Fordist order that broadly benefited native populations to a post-Fordist multicultural regime that undermines its own foundations.

The West is both a capitalist and a liberal civilization. This economic system and this ideology developed together and are now fused into a single, self-reinforcing system. In the Fordist phase (roughly 1945–1975), this fusion largely benefited native White populations, delivering broad-based affluence, rising real wages, high homeownership, and stable family-oriented communities within relatively homogeneous nations still anchored by pre-liberal norms. However, the crisis of Fordism in the 1970s activated a transition to a post-Fordist multicultural and limbic capitalist regime. In this new order, liberalism’s universalistic drive and capitalism’s optimizing logic reinforce each other: the former delegitimizes ethnic particularism and cultural continuity, while the latter demands flexible, low-cost non-Western labor to deal with structural shortages. The system thus favors both diversity as a moral good and certain immigrant personality traits that optimize post-Fordist production. Yet this regime harbors a deep structural contradiction: it rests upon the historically peculiar “weird” psychology of European peoples, including low ethnocentrism, high impersonal trust, and impartiality, while empowering non-Western groups that operate according to particularistic kin-selection and ethnic nepotism. The result is a system that is biologically and culturally incompatible with the long-term survival and civilizational creativity of European peoples in their homelands.

"It's not really worse than 9/11—because we lost almost 3,000 people—I don't want to go down that road," he says, catching himself. "But, everyone was united in defense and patriotism of the United States. It's gone now!"

"And how can people all of the sudden turn against Israel?! A democracy! Our best friend for so many years! How is this possible?!"

WATCH: 'All of Israel is ours': Smotrich calls to annex West Bank in Jerusalem Day speech

"The time has come for us to finally erase the lines that distinguish between Areas A, B, and C, the entire Land of Israel is ours," Smotrich said at the Religious Zionist Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called to annex the entirety of the West Bank during a speech at a Jerusalem Day rally on Thursday night.

Smotrich was addressing students and faculty at the Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva in Jerusalem - a flagship institution of the Religious Zionist movement, established by the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of British Mandatory Palestine, Abraham Isaac Kook, in the 1920s. Smotrich studied at the institution when he was younger.

"We have organized all the new young settlements, and approved more than a hundred new settlements in Judea and Samaria," Smotrich said.

"In the last three years, we have approved 60,000 housing units in Judea and Samaria. The people of Israel are returning home, and this time forever!" he continued.

"The time has come to finally erase the lines that separate Areas A, B, and C. I placed a detailed plan on the cabinet table this week, and I call on the prime minister to adopt it. All of the land of Israel is ours," he added.

Areas A, B, and C are categories for administrative divisions of the West Bank established under the Oslo Accords.

"For two and a half years, we have been in the midst of a hard and long war - a war that also costs us heavily, but also with great achievements on all fronts," he said, naming several senior Iranian, Hezbollah, and Hamas leaders killed since the October 7 massacre.

He also praised the passing of the controversial death penalty bill, saying that Nukhba force terrorists will "soon go to hell."

'Enemies of Israel weaker than ever,' Smotrich says

"We still have work to do on all fronts. Even during the Six Day War, which returned us to Jerusalem with a brilliant victory, did not end the wars. But even today, the State of Israel is stronger than ever and its enemies weaker than ever," he said.

"In the economy, we are seeing the fulfillment of prophecies. From a state of refugees with austerity and shortages, to an economic power. While fighting on seven fronts, the shekel strengthens, the stock exchange breaks records, and foreign investments flow into the country," he said.

"Tonight we celebrate the miracle, and tomorrow we continue the work, the building, and the planting," he concluded.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir also spoke at the event, Israel's public broadcaster KAN News reported.

During his address, Ben-Gvir stated his desire to establish settlements in Lebanon.

"We also have plans to encourage settlements [across the region], from Gaza to Judea and Samaria," he added.
