EU Reopens Ties With Syria Despite Ongoing Instability
https://europeanconservative.com/articles/news/eu-reopens-ties-with-syria-despite-ongoing-instability/
The European Union has lifted sanctions on Syria’s Interior and Defense Ministries, marking another major step in rebuilding relations with Damascus after years of war and diplomatic isolation.
The decision, announced Monday, removes restrictions on seven Syrian entities, including the two ministries, as Brussels continues easing measures imposed during the rule of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.
The move follows the EU’s decision in May 2025 to lift many of its economic sanctions on Syria. The bloc has also agreed to reactivate a cooperation agreement with Damascus first signed in 1977.
EU officials say the goal is to support Syria’s stabilization and reconstruction following Assad’s fall. However, the country remains deeply unstable, with armed groups and foreign-backed forces still operating across different parts of Syria.
Although the government in Damascus has expanded its authority in recent months, large areas of the country remain outside its full control.
At the same time, the EU is maintaining sanctions against figures linked to Assad’s former regime. According to Brussels, 318 individuals and 51 entities remain under restrictions until at least 2027.
The easing of sanctions comes as several European governments increasingly focus on the issue of Syrian refugees living in Europe.
Syria was one of the main sources of migration into the EU during the civil war, with millions fleeing the country over the past decade. As security conditions partially improve, some European governments are discussing the possibility of increasing refugee returns.
The issue returned to public attention following Syrian President Abu Mohammad al-Jolani’s recent visit to Berlin, where migration and future cooperation with Europe were widely discussed.
However, Syria’s new leadership has so far avoided making firm commitments regarding large-scale refugee returns. Al-Jolani has publicly pushed back against suggestions that Damascus is prepared to accept broad return programs in the near future.
The EU says renewed cooperation with Syria is intended to encourage stability and support reconstruction efforts. But questions remain over how much authority the new Syrian leadership actually exercises across the country and whether current security conditions are sufficient for wider refugee returns.

30-year Treasury yield tops 5.19%, highest since before the financial crisis
https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/19/treasurys-yields-inflation-traders-fed-interest-rates.html
Yields on U.S. Treasurys advanced Tuesday as investors continued to dump bonds on fears inflation is reigniting. The 30-year Treasury
yield hit the highest level in nearly 19 years.
The longer-dated 30-year Treasury bond yield was last trading more than 3 basis points higher at 5.183%. It briefly hit 5.197% during the session, marking its highest level since July 2007.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury note yield — the key benchmark for mortgages, auto loans and credit card debt — was up 4 basis points to 4.667%. Earlier in the session, it climbed to 4.687%, or its highest level since January 2025. The 2-year Treasury note yield, which reacts to expectations of short-term Federal Reserve interest rate moves, last rose by 3 basis points to 4.12%.
One basis point equals 0.01%, and yields and prices move in opposite directions.
Rates rose following a string of reports last week suggesting inflationary pressures were reaccelerating as rising oil prices tied to the conflict with Iran pushed costs higher. The development spooked fixed income investors and caused traders to bet the next move by the Fed could be a rate hike, instead of a reduction.
“It’s a real problem,” said Jim Lacamp, senior vice president at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Tuesday. “When we started this year, everybody expected rates to come down — that was part of the bull case. Now, it looks like we’re going to see a rate hike.”
Elevated borrowing costs on products such as credit cards and mortgages may weigh on consumer spending, while higher yields could also slow longer-term economic growth and put pressure on the lofty valuations in equities.
Ian Lyngen, BMO’s head of U.S. rates, said if and when 30-year rates manage to reach 5.25% in the next few weeks, there will be a “more durable pullback” in equity valuations.
The S&P 500 closed down 0.67%, ending at 7,353.61 to mark its third losing session in a row. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite finished 0.84% lower at 25,870.71. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also shed 322.24 points, or 0.65%, to close at 49,363.88.
A Bank of America survey published Tuesday showed 62% of global fund manager respondents expect 30-year Treasury yields to hit 6%, equaling the highest level since late 1999 and an increase of about 85 basis points from current prices. Only 20% of respondents are targeting a 30-year yield of 4%.
Yields on longer-term government debt in the U.K. and Germany were also elevated on Tuesday. The yield on German 30-year bunds stood at 3.684%, with Britain’s 30-year gilt yield rising less than 1 basis point to 5.773%. Japan’s 30-year yield hit a record this week.

Cotton, Senators to Trump: Eliminate UN Agency that Employs Hamas-Terrorists
Washington, D.C. — Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), joined by 24 colleagues, sent a letter to President Trump requesting that his administration work with the United Nations (UN) to fully dismantle and eliminate the budget of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Numerous UNRWA employees have ties to Hamas and other terrorist groups, yet they continue to receive millions of dollars annually from the UN.
The letter is cosigned by Senators Jim Banks (R-Indiana), John Barrasso (R-Wyoming), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee), Katie Britt (R-Alabama), Ted Budd (R-North Carolina), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Kevin Cramer (R-North Dakota), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), John Curtis (R-Utah), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Deb Fischer (R-Nebraska), Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), Bill Hagerty (R-Tennessee), John Hoeven (R-North Dakota), James Lankford (R-Oklahoma), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyoming), Dave McCormick (R-Pennsylvania), Mike Rounds (R-South Dakota), Rick Scott (R-Florida), Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), Tim Sheehy (R-Montana), and Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi).
In part, the Senators wrote:
“We strongly urge your administration to take decisive action to fully dismantle UNRWA and eliminate it from the UN budget. Any aid organization in Gaza or otherwise must be demonstrably free of ties to terrorism and committed to transparency, accountability, and peace. We must ensure this failed system doesn’t continue reinforcing the conditions that have fueled terrorism for generations. The time to act is now.”
Full text of the letter may be found here and below.
May 18, 2026
The Honorable Donald J. Trump
President of the United States of America
1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Trump,
We strongly support your administration’s efforts to preserve Israel’s long-term security and ensure that Gaza has a future free of Hamas’s terrorist influence. Your strong leadership has been instrumental in advancing a comprehensive 20-point peace plan that demands Hamas disarm and play no role in Gaza governance. Achieving stability in Gaza requires ridding Gaza of the military, social, and political infrastructure that fed Hamas’s power. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is one such structure that must be dismantled, not just in Gaza but across the region.
Established in 1949 as a temporary relief agency, UNRWA operates across Gaza, Judea and Samaria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. In defiance of its mission, extensive reports, investigations, and intelligence assessments have confirmed UNRWA’s systemic infiltration by Hamas and other U.S.-designated terrorist organizations. Yet America continued to fund UNRWA.
Israel found that at least twelve UNRWA employees participated in the Hamas-led October 7 attacks, and that roughly ten percent of the agency’s employees in Gaza have ties to terrorist groups. Recently, a USAID Office of Inspector General (OIG) investigation identified three additional UNRWA employees who participated in the attacks as well as 14 others affiliated with Hamas. The USAID OIG is expanding its probe to examine more than 100 UNRWA employees for potential ties to Hamas and involvement in the attacks.
Since October 7, Hamas has repeatedly diverted UNRWA’s supplies, used its facilities to hide weapons stockpiles and tunnel infrastructure, and even used its buildings to hold hostages. UNRWA’s educational curriculum glorifies terrorism and antisemitism. Yet while the United States has suspended direct funding and Israel has banned the agency from operating on its territory, UNRWA remains active in Gaza. UNRWA continues to receive $70 million annually from the United Nations regular budget – of which the United States provides roughly a quarter.
We strongly urge your administration to take decisive action to fully dismantle UNRWA and eliminate it from the UN budget. Any aid organization in Gaza or otherwise must be demonstrably free of ties to terrorism and committed to transparency, accountability, and peace. We must ensure this failed system doesn’t continue reinforcing the conditions that have fueled terrorism for generations. The time to act is now.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We stand prepared to assist.
Sincerely,
Tom Cotton
United States Senator
Soros-backed shadow group coordinated 109 buses of out-of-state activists for Saturday’s Montgomery protest against redistricting
https://yellowhammernews.com/soros-backed-shadow-group-coordinated-109-buses-of-out-of-state-activists-for-saturdays-montgomery-rally/
Protests against redistricting were held in Montgomery over the weekend, but, to the surprise of no one, George Soros’ fingerprints were all over the event.
Leftwing activists showed up to Alabama’s capital city Saturday for the “All Roads Lead to the South” rally. Speakers there took turns calling state leaders “racists” over the new congressional map approved by the Legislature in the recent special session.
Riders were bussed in from Oregon, Ohio, and points across the country. The national progressive coalition’s lead coordinator has been bankrolled by George Soros to the tune of $7.61 million.
The organizers weren’t shy about what was going on, bragging about every number.
“We have over 109 buses that are scheduled to come,” Black Voters Matter co-founder LaTosha Brown told WSFA the day before the rally. Buses, she said, from Oregon, from Ohio, from more than a dozen states. The entire operation, she added, had been thrown together in “a matter of six days.”
The new map will likely result in U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures (D-Mobile) being thrown out of Congress, which is unacceptable out of state leftist groups.
The rally was co-anchored by the No Kings coalition — the same nationwide network behind the past year of anti-Trump street demonstrations. No Kings’ lead national coordinator is Indivisible, the Washington-based advocacy nonprofit founded by former Democratic Hill staffers Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg in 2017.
Indivisible’s funder is no secret. According to the Open Society Foundations; own publicly searchable grants database, George Soros’ foundation has awarded Indivisible $7.61 million in grants since 2017, including a $3 million grant from the Open Society Action Fund in 2023.
The cast that stepped off those buses was equally out-of-state: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia. More than twenty members of Congress, drawn from across the country, lecturing Alabama on Alabama’s politics from Alabama’s own Capitol steps.
While the majority of Alabamians support President Donald Trump’s agenda, politicians and leftwing activists from across the country will use millions of dollars to stop that from happening.
NAACP urging athletes, fans to boycott over voting rights
https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/48817262/naacp-calls-boycott-southern-states-voting-rights
The NAACP is calling on Black athletes and fans to boycott the athletic programs of public universities in states that are taking steps that the nation's oldest civil rights group says are restricting Black voting rights.
Launched Tuesday, the "Out of Bounds" campaign urges prospective Black athletes, their families, alumni and fans to "withhold athletic and financial support" from major public universities in states that "have moved to limit, weaken or erase Black voting representation."
If Black athletes participate in the boycott, it could deplete rosters for powerhouse football and basketball programs across the Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference.
The NAACP is among groups responding to a wave of gerrymandering in the aftermath of a Supreme Court ruling that winnowed a key provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Civil rights activists have mobilized across the South to protest redistricting plans by Republican state legislatures that eliminate majority-Black congressional districts after the high court's ruling. Activists have looked for pressure points to dissuade GOP-led states from redistricting maps, including calls for mass protests and economic boycotts.
"Across the South, Black athletes have helped build some of the most profitable college athletic programs in America," said NAACP president Derrick Johnson. Johnson noted that the programs "generate hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue, national television value, alumni donations, merchandising sales, ticket sales and brand equity – much of it powered by Black football and basketball talent."
The NAACP's campaign calls out Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and South Carolina as states to boycott, arguing that the athletic programs of those states' flagship universities are especially reliant on Black athletic talent and should protect Black political interests.
"Black athletes should not be asked to generate wealth, prestige, and power for state institutions while those same states strip political power from Black communities," Johnson said.
Black lawmakers themselves are also pressuring athletic leagues to take action against Republican-led states that might redistrict longtime Black members of Congress.
The Congressional Black Caucus on Monday sent a letter to the commissioners of the SEC and ACC athletic conferences, as well as NCAA president Charlie Baker, stating that its members will oppose the SCORE Act, a bill to standardize athletes' contracting rights across the country, unless conference leaders oppose GOP-led redistricting efforts in states that include major conference members.
"The Congressional Black Caucus believes institutions that profit from Black talent and Black communities have a responsibility to stand with those communities when their fundamental rights are under attack," the CBC said. "Silence in the face of injustice is not neutrality – it is complicity."
Dem DAs Are Threatening to Charge ICE Agents Who Look for Illegals at Polling Places
https://thenationalpulse.com/2026/05/19/dem-das-are-threatening-to-charge-ice-agents-who-look-for-illegals-at-polling-places/
❓ WHAT HAPPENED: Democratic district attorneys (DAs) from multiple major cities have announced plans to prosecute federal immigration agents who engage in so-called voter intimidation at polling sites during the November midterms, in response to President Donald J. Trump suggesting the deployment of federal forces to ensure election integrity. Illegal immigrants are not supposed to be able to vote, raising questions as to why voters in Democrat cities would be intimidated by their presence.
💬 KEY QUOTE: “A federal badge is not a license to violate the Constitution, and it is not a shield from state criminal law. We will prosecute ICE agents who break the law. There is no category of American who gets to operate above it.” – Larry Krasner, District Attorney for Philadelphia
🎯 IMPACT: The move by these district attorneys could lead to confrontations between state and federal authorities, potentially affecting the administration of elections and the presence of federal agents at polling places.
📰 DETAIL: The coalition, known as the Project for the Fight Against Federal Overreach, includes district attorneys from Democrat-led cities such as Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and Dallas. Their announcement follows President Trump’s refusal to rule out sending federal agents to polling places, a move Democrats fear could intimidate voters, with Mary Moriarty, County Attorney for Hennepin County, Minnesota, saying, “If ICE officers are dispatched to polling places in Hennepin County to frighten voters away from the ballot box, my office will investigate, and we will charge.”
👀 FLASHBACK: Legally, only U.S. citizens can vote in U.S. elections, but the Trump administration has long argued that inadequate vetting of voters, especially those who vote by mail, has been allowing non-citizens to vote regardless. While the Democrats have denied that illegal voting is an issue at scale, comments from DAs such as Moriarty suggesting ICE agents could “frighten voters away from the ballot box” imply that they know that some of the people attending polling sites could be illegal aliens. Research suggests that non-citizens do vote in sufficient numbers to change election results, and that they tend to favor the Democrats. Notably, Democrat politicians have consistently opposed election integrity legislation such as the SAVE Act, requiring voter ID, despite a majority of voters across all ethnicities and party affiliations supporting it.

Trump-backed Andy Barr wins GOP nomination for Mitch McConnell’s Senate seat in Kentucky
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2026-election/kentucky-senate-election-win-republican-primary-andy-barr-rcna345009
Trump changed the contours of the race when he endorsed Barr and urged businessman Nate Morris to drop out of the Republican primary.
Rep. Andy Barr, riding an endorsement from President Donald Trump, has won the Republican primary in the race for retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell’s seat in Kentucky, NBC News projects.
Barr, a seven-term congressman, prevailed over former state Attorney General Daniel Cameron and other, lesser-known GOP candidates.
He will be a heavy general election favorite against Democratic nominee Charles Booker, who previously ran for Senate and was competing against another former Democratic Senate nominee, Amy McGrath. The state has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since it awarded Wendell Ford a fourth and final term in 1992.
Trump waded into the race this month when he backed Barr and urged Nate Morris, a businessman with strong ties to his MAGA movement, to end his campaign for the GOP nomination and instead accept an ambassadorship. Morris agreed and quickly got behind Barr.
Though Morris is friends with Vice President JD Vance and received an endorsement from Charlie Kirk, the influential conservative activist, before he was assassinated last year, he had not shown enough growth in polls to win Trump’s support.
“Just like the President said at his Northern Kentucky rally in March, I’ve been with him all the way and I always will be,” Barr said in a statement after he clinched Trump’s endorsement. “As our next Senator, I’ll stand with President Trump 100% to deliver for Kentucky and to keep Making America Great Again.”
Morris had relentlessly attacked Barr and Cameron as extensions of the McConnell establishment — a potential tension point given McConnell’s split with Trump — and his departure from the race eased Barr’s path.
“President Trump makes his pick for Kentucky Senate,” a narrator said in an ad that Barr’s campaign rushed to air, quoting from Trump’s social media post endorsing Barr: “Andy Barr is a proven winner. … He’ll cut taxes, unleash American energy dominance, and secure the border.”
For Cameron, once seen as a rising national star, the primary loss is his second statewide defeat in less than three years. He lost to Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear in Beshear’s 2023 re-election bid.

More Than Half of L.A.’s Street Homeless Are Not from L.A.
https://www.city-journal.org/article/la-homeless-population-migration
Los Angeles hosts the nation’s largest unsheltered homeless population. In recent years, despite billions in city and county spending, L.A.’s once-pristine streets have become littered with tents, drugs, and feces. City leaders have made elaborate promises about managing the homeless problem, but few seem to have asked a simple question: Where, exactly, are these people coming from?
There is a reason for that. In 2020, the city-county Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) found that one-third of “unsheltered Angelenos” became homeless outside of Los Angeles County. In 2024, the nonprofit RAND Corporation reported that 41 percent of the street homeless surveyed across three Los Angeles neighborhoods—Hollywood, Venice, and Skid Row—were “last housed” somewhere other than L.A. County.
Both reports cut against the narrative of left-wing politicians and activists, who insist that any claim that out-of-town homeless are flooding L.A. is a “myth.” In 2021, LAHSA stopped publishing previous-location data. In 2025, RAND removed the metric from the organization’s annual report and included it in a separate, lesser-read “annex.”
We asked LAHSA and RAND why they buried this data. LAHSA said it stopped publishing previous-location figures because of respondents’ “varying interpretations of the question.” RAND claimed that it moved the data to the annex “due to a need to save costs on publishing,” and confirmed that the data would remain there in the group’s upcoming report.
Another reason might be that the massive migration of homeless people to Los Angeles violates progressive pieties—and these groups would rather suppress those data than face their implications. (In response to this accusation, LAHSA said it stopped publishing results for the previous-location question “solely due to the statistical uncertainty,” but noted that the “question is in the queue for revision and validation”; RAND again cited “scarce resources” and the need to “streamline the main report.”)
If these groups wouldn’t publish or promote this information, we decided to get it ourselves. We spent two days recreating RAND’s 2024 study of L.A.’s homeless population, using a slightly larger sample size to ensure precision. We approached people on the streets of the same three neighborhoods—Hollywood, Venice, and Skid Row—and, after identifying ourselves, asked more than 200 homeless a simple question: “Where are you from, originally?”
The results were astounding: 64 percent of the L.A. street homeless said they were from outside the City of Los Angeles, and 53 percent said they were from outside Los Angeles County—a significant increase compared with the LAHSA and RAND studies. Nearly 40 percent told us they were from other states, mostly from states that voted for President Trump in 2024. Six percent told us that they were from other countries, including Cuba, Venezuela, and North Korea.
Several of these non-L.A. residents were candid, describing their migration to the city for its fair weather or generous services. In Hollywood, a young woman named Norika said that after being a foster child in New York, she served in the Marine Corps, and had just arrived in L.A. days before. Proudly pointing to a full set of clean, straight teeth, she said that she did not use drugs. Holding a plastic bottle of vodka, she said she was drinking to cope with the pain of living on the streets, where, she said, she has already been raped.
On Skid Row, we encountered a young man as he was about to administer intravenous drugs. He told us that he came to Los Angeles from a small town in upstate New York for sobriety treatment but had departed the facility due to concerns about the program director’s “shady” activities. He would not elaborate and returned to his drug preparation.
Later, we encountered an earnest-looking elderly black woman sitting primly on her suitcase outside of a Skid Row shelter. She told us that she had purchased her own Greyhound ticket from Washington, D.C. at a cost of $379. She seemed to be in shock.
For years, Los Angeles’s homelessness policy has been rooted in the idea that the condition is a housing problem. The city and county have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on “housing first” and “harm reduction” programming—in a nutshell, providing housing and drug paraphernalia instead of mandating treatment—while failing reliably to punish quality-of-life crimes, such as public camping, drug consumption, and petty theft.
The homeless respond to incentives. They flock to places where it is easy to camp, do drugs, and commit crimes, and where the government provides housing, benefits, and drug paraphernalia. That’s exactly what Los Angeles has done. As a result, there is a “magnet effect” that continuously attracts the homeless from around the world.

UN Climate Panel Quietly Admits Its Doomsday Climate Scenarios Were ‘Implausible’
https://www.gulf-insider.com/un-climate-panel-quietly-admits-its-doomsday/
The IPCC has published a new generation of climate scenarios – and buried in the fine print is a remarkable concession: the extreme warming pathways that dominated climate research, policy, and media coverage for decades were never actually plausible. It took a while to notice because almost no one in mainstream media bothered to report it.
“The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has just published the next generation of climate scenarios,” Science policy analyst Roger Pielke Jr. wrote, calling it “big news” that “eliminated the most extreme scenarios that have dominated climate research over much of the past several decades.”
The conclusion was unambiguous. “The IPCC and broader research community has now admitted that the scenarios that have dominated climate research, assessment and policy during the past two cycles of the IPCC assessment process are implausible. They describe impossible futures.”
Those “impossible futures” formed the backbone of a decade-plus of apocalyptic climate messaging – melting ice caps, submerged coastlines, mass extinctions, widespread crop failures, and global hunger, always around the corner, always demanding immediate, economy-reshaping action to avert a catastrophe that, it now turns out, the underlying science community had assigned to a category closer to science fiction than projection.
That’s a significant institutional retreat.
Pielke noted that the previous framework lacked “any systematic effort to evaluate plausibility of scenarios,” meaning the scariest pathways were able to dominate the policy debate for years without anyone in the room applying a basic reality check.
Paediatrician in Germany has been charged with 130 cases of rape and other forms of sexual abuse targeting children
https://punchng.com/german-doctor-charged-with-130-counts-of-sexual-abuse/
The unidentified suspect who worked in clinics in Brandenburg state near Berlin allegedly committed the crimes over 12 years, they said in a statement, without specifying how many children were abused.
“The accused is charged with 130 counts of sexual offences” while employed by the healthcare provider Havelland Kliniken, said the Potsdam public prosecutor’s office.
“These include, among other things, allegations of aggravated sexual abuse of children and rape.”
The offences are alleged to have occurred between December 1, 2013 and November 5 of last year.
The prosecutors said “the accused is alleged to have committed a large number of the offences while performing his professional duties” at clinics in Rathenow and Nauen, two towns in Brandenburg.
They said the charges made public on Wednesday had been laid on May 6.
The accused remains in pretrial detention, said the prosecutors, with the case handed over to the regional court in the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam.
Bild daily said the paediatrician, now aged 46, had been arrested in November 2025 after the mother of a female patient in the Rathenow hospital alerted police.
Investigators had then also seized numerous data storage devices.
The alleged offences recall the case in France of a convicted paedophile who practised as a surgeon for years while repeatedly abusing children in his care.
A French court in May 2025 sentenced retired doctor Joel Le Scouarnec to 20 years in prison after he confessed to sexually abusing or raping 298 patients between 1989 and 2014.
Of those, more than 250 victims were under 15.
