Radiative Forcing and Ozone Depletion of a Decade of Satellite Megaconstellation Missions

Megaconstellations of thousands of satellites are being rapidly launched into low-Earth orbit, increasing rocket launches and re-entry events. These activities release harmful chemicals throughout the atmosphere, impacting climate and the ozone layer. We use a global inventory of launch and re-entry emissions covering the onset of the megaconstellation era (2020–2022), and project these to 2029 based on 2020–2022 growth rates. We implement this inventory into a 3D atmospheric chemistry model to determine the impacts of megaconstellations on the ozone layer and climate. We find that global stratospheric ozone depletion from all mission types is relatively small compared to surface sources and megaconstellation missions only account for about one-tenth of this depletion. This is because rockets launching megaconstellations almost all use kerosene, a large source of black carbon or soot particles, but not of chemicals such as chlorine that directly destroy ozone. Soot from rockets absorbs sunlight, warming the upper layers of the atmosphere and decreasing the amount of sunlight reaching Earth's lower atmosphere, causing it to cool. Megaconstellation missions are responsible for about half of this climate effect. In this regard, rockets launching megaconstellations and other missions are like small-scale stratospheric aerosol injection experiments without forethought for potential unintended consequences.

Phalanx canons that fire 6,000 rounds per minute. THAAD and Patriot missile batteries. Littoral and Arleigh Burke-class warships. A turret-mounted laser that recycles rapidly. Evacuating non-mission essential contractors and dependents of armed forces personnel. These defensive measures and more are occurring at GITMO amid creeping fears that fuel-starved Cuba might retaliate against the United States by launching an armada of inexpensive attack drones at the naval station.

 

Cuba is in the dark. Its primary fuel supplier was Venezuela. After the US overthrew Nicholas Maduro, imposed a naval blockade, and seized Venezuela’s vast oil fields, Cuba was caught in a stranglehold, unable to replenish its shrinking reserves. Cascading blackouts have left millions without power, and even food is in short supply. Abandoned cars now clog Havanah’s once bustling streets, and once neighborly citizens have set upon each other like packs of hungry wolves. Families enjoying backyard barbeques are non-existent; now, they’ve turned cutthroat, combatively fighting for morsels of food or dribbles of gasoline. Cuba’s government keeps tight control over what little gas and diesel remain and isn’t sharing them with the public.

 

The crisis has worsened drastically since Real Raw News in March published an article about Cubans sneaking onto GITMO to steal diesel to power home generators. Right or wrong, the perpetrators were released, RRN learned afterward. Since then, throngs of Cubans have amassed on Cuba’s side of the fenceline, chanting “Death to Donald Trump” and daring US Marines on America’s side of the fence to shoot them. This dramatic escalation is far more severe than is publicly known.

 

On May 9, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, and DNI honcho Tulsi Gabbard met in the skiff–a highly secure, accredited room or building used by the U.S. government, military, and defense contractors to securely store, discuss, and process top-secret and sensitive compartmented information—to discuss a “clear and present danger” to US forces at GITMO. According to Gabbard, Cuba had somehow, in spite of the naval blockade, acquired more than 3,000 Ukrainian and Iranian attack drones, specifically Ukraine’s homegrown RS-1 Bars and Iran’s Shahed suicide drones. Per a GITMO source, the alphabet agencies had obtained satellite imagery of drones being moved from Ports of Havannah and Trinidad to strategic launch positions only a few miles from GITMO. If launched, the drones could shower GITMO with little or no warning time.

 

According to our sources, Hegseth recommended a preemptive strike; stand-off JDAM bombs and cruise missiles could obliterate launch sites and drone-filled warehouses before Cuba’s leader, the communist Miguel Díaz-Canel, ordered an attack. But President Trump and the NSA dismissed the idea as unnecessarily provocative and instead opted to bolster GITMO’s defenses. On May 13, the USS Preble, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer equipped with a 60 kW laser capable of destroying drones, was retasked to GITMO. The previous day, US Army Air Defense specialists installed Patriot and THAAD interceptor batteries. And on May 10, thirteen flights departed Leeward Point Airfield, each carrying non-essential persons to safer shores in Florida.

 

“Tensions are high, but if it comes, we’re ready,” our source said. “If they attack us, it’ll be the last mistake Cuba ever makes.”

What issues are facing Mexico’s water supply?

 

One particularly pressing issue is exposure to fluoride and arsenic, which the Bulletin of the World Health Organization (WHO) has cited as the two chemical contaminants believed to have the greatest effect on public health globally. Long-term exposure to high levels of fluoride has been shown to cause neurological problems, while prolonged exposure to arsenic has been linked to a range of health compliations affecting the cardiovascular and endocrine systems.

 

The damage caused to health has been recorded worldwide in countries such as Argentina, Bangladesh, Chile, China, Hungary, India, Iran, Romania, Taiwan, the United States and Vietnam.

 

In Mexico, this type of pollution is being referred to as “[a] new class of water contamination” by some researchers and experts. This concern is shared by Dylan Terrell, founder and executive director of Caminos de Agua, a small nonprofit in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, that works with NGOs and community leaders on projects in rural areas impacted by the water crisis across Mexico.

 

“We used to be worried about pathogens and bacteria that were easy to deal with, but these two chemicals cannot be removed easily…not even by standard water filtration systems,” Terrell noted in an interview with Mexico News Daily.

 

Research has pointed to a natural explanation for the presence of arsenic and fluoride in Mexico. A 2020 study published in the scientific journal Science of the Total Environment notes that the origin of these contaminants in water “is mostly geological” but can be exacerbated by human activities such as mining and pesticide use.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Established almost 500 years ago, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is no longer “the Inquisition” — rather, its main focus is handing down the teachings of the apostles, said the office’s prefect.

 

“Our mission is to promote and protect the doctrine of the faith. It is a task that will always be necessary for the church, which has the duty to transmit the teaching of the apostles to the next generation,” Cardinal Luis Ladaria Ferrer, congregation prefect, told Vatican News Feb. 1.

 

Called the Sacred Roman and Universal Inquisition when it was instituted in 1542, the congregation was initially a tribunal exclusively for cases of heresy and schism, but soon its responsibilities were expanded to include “everything relating directly or indirectly to faith and morals,” according to the congregation’s website.

 

Of the many people examined in the early days, the one mentioned most often is Italian scientist Galileo Galilei, who was found “vehemently suspect of heresy.” St. John Paul II issued a declaration in 1992, recognizing the error of Galileo’s trial.

 

The Index of Forbidden Books was originally entrusted to the Inquisition until it became its own congregation for three centuries until 1917 when its duties were again handed back to the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office — the Inquisition’s new name after it was reorganized by Pope Pius X in 1908.

 

It was again reformed in 1965 by St. Paul VI and renamed the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Index of Prohibited Books was also abrogated.

 

Cardinal Ladaria told Vatican News, “The past of our congregation still weighs heavily, since we have not always acknowledged the profound changes that have taken place in the church and in the Roman Curia in recent times.”

 

“We are no longer the Inquisition; the index no longer exists,” he said.

 

“What was called the ‘concern for correct doctrine’ came about before the Holy Office, it already existed in the New Testament” and it can be seen in the many councils and synods held since, he added.

 

“Certainly, the concrete way of carrying out this task has changed over the course of the centuries and we can imagine that it will continue to change,” the cardinal said. “But the concern for fidelity to the doctrine of the apostles will always remain.”
