A stray car on our property had 3 kittens in a Rubbermaid inside of a tipped on its side garbage can. Are the kittens ok to be in a Rubbermaid bin? They look safe in there but I'm wondering if it's a healthy environment for them. I'm not really familiar with cats having kittens. I feed the adult strays, but this is new territory for me.
dammit! not a stray car, a stray cat
They are fine where they are at under a bunch of trees. I put the tipped sideways garbage can there so that the strays would have some shelter from the weather. But now there are kittens in there. Should I replace the Rubbermaid bin with a cardboard box?
Thanks
I'm leaving them be but just monitoring the situation wondering if that Rubbermaid bin is going to get all gross and contaminated.
The Rubbermaid bin is inside of a tipped sideways garbage can with the lid propped open with a brick. We do have raccoons around here. I didn't think about them getting at the kittens.
It is the local cat's hangout because I put food out for the strays every day. I know the mama cat well. I can pet her and pick her up since she is one of the stray kittens born last year. She seems to be taking good care of the kittens so far, but there are lots of other cats milling around and she seems somewhat anxious about that.

Yes. Mama is around. She hangs out on my front porch where I put food and water out for the strays. She is taking good care of her kittens. My primary concern is the cleanliness of the Rubbermaid bin inside of the tipped sideways garbage can. I believe they are safe there but is it going to get all nasty full of pee and poop? Will I have to clean it out eventually? The kittens still have their eyes closed so I'm not about to touch them any time too soon if at all.
>eats their poop
yuck!
Good idea to change the bedding.
I have an old rug in there.
Will keep an eye on the situation.
Thanx for advice.
Thanks.
That's a good idea.
I have an old rug in there.
Maybe I should put a few paper towels in there as well that I can just toss out.
That's my thought as well. But it's the plastic bin that worries me because that is not natural to a cat's environment.
I live in Midwest US so cold temps. are not really of a concern right now. I'm more concerned that they will get overheated. They are under some pine trees so they are in the shade. Supposed to get up into the 80s next week.

T and R has been on my mind.
Thanx Fren!
The thing that I wonder about though is that there is no T and R for rabbits, and squirrels, and raccoons, and opossums, etc. so why do we worry so much about cats and dogs?
