Former CDC Supervisor Pleads Guilty to Stealing More than $190,000 of Agency Funds

 

ATLANTA - Gwendolyn Brandon, a former supervisor at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has pleaded guilty to theft of government funds in connection with fake invoices she submitted to the CDC.

 

“This defendant embezzled taxpayer money and brazenly exploited her position of public trust by fabricating invoices,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “When she is sentenced later this year, she will pay the price for her greed and deception.”

 

“This federal employee-turn-fraudster exploited her government position to steal taxpayer money to enrich herself,” said Special Agent in Charge Marcus L. Sykes of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General. “HHS-OIG is committed to protecting the integrity of the federal workforce and to help ensure that HHS funding is spent appropriately to serve the American public.”

 

According to U.S. Attorney Hertzberg, the charges, and other information presented in court: From approximately August 2023 to February 2025, while employed as a CDC administrative professional, Brandon created fraudulent invoices that appeared to be from vendors requesting payment for goods or services provided to the CDC. The invoices triggered payments to an account she controlled. She used her role as a supervisor and her knowledge of CDC’s invoice and credit card processing system to perpetuate the fraud by causing employees under her supervision, who were unaware of the fraud, to make the payments. Through her scheme, she caused the CDC to pay at least 46 fraudulent invoices in amounts ranging from $2,230 to $9,970, resulting in the theft of $190,461.50 in government funds.

 

Gwendolyn Brandon, 43, of Cumming, Georgia, pleaded guilty to theft of government funds yesterday. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. before U.S. District Judge Steven D. Grimberg. In determining the actual sentence, the Court will consider the United States Sentencing Guidelines, which are not binding but provide appropriate sentencing ranges for most offenders. As part of her plea agreement, Brandon agreed to resign from the CDC and never apply for employment with the federal government again, nor will she seek to do business with the federal government as a contractor or vendor.

12 Members of Violent “Crown Hill Enterprise” Indicted on Federal RICO Charges, Including Murder

 

INDIANAPOLIS- A federal grand jury returned a 28‑count indictment charging 12 alleged members of a racketeering enterprise accused of orchestrating widespread criminal activity in Indianapolis, including murder, kidnapping, assault, arson, drug trafficking, and illegal firearms crimes. The first of these defendants made their initial appearance today in the Southern District of Indiana.

 

“The superseding indictment in this case alleges, among other things, that these defendants shot and killed a man for slamming the door of a drug house, shot another man in the leg for a $40 drug debt, pistol-whipped at least two other people, and dealt all manner of drugs, including heroin, fentanyl, crack cocaine, and methamphetamine,” said Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “This type of alleged drug dealing and violence ruins communities, people, and their families. Drugs and gang violence are a scourge. These groups will be dismantled and prosecuted.”

 

“The allegations in this indictment describe a criminal organization that maintained a grip on Indianapolis neighborhoods for years through fear, violence, and devastation,” aid U.S. Attorney Tom Wheeler for the Southern District of Indiana. “We will not allow groups that traffic deadly drugs, terrorize residents, and retaliate against witnesses to operate with impunity. We are grateful for the outstanding work of our federal, state, and local partners whose collaboration made today’s charges possible.”

Former Senior Vice President of Atlanta Housing Authority Sentenced to Prison for Housing Assistance Fraud and Pandemic Relief Fraud

 

ATLANTA - Tracy Jones, a former Senior Vice President at the Atlanta Housing Authority, has been sentenced to prison and ordered to pay restitution for a scheme to fraudulently collect Section 8 housing assistance payments for her own rental property and family members, making fraudulent applications to collect pandemic relief funds, and committing mortgage fraud when refinancing her rental property.

 

“Jones violated the trust of the community, the taxpayers, and the needy families she was supposed to assist, using her senior position at one of the largest housing authorities to steal limited public funds,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “Her theft of that money meant other members of the community went without much-needed relief. Our office will continue to vigorously act to hold people like Jones, who violate the public trust and pilfer from the treasury, accountable.”

 

“Tracy Jones abused a position of trust by diverting funds from multiple federal programs, undermining assistance intended for vulnerable communities and struggling businesses during the pandemic,” said Special Agent in Charge Jerome Winkle with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Office of Inspector General (OIG). “HUD OIG will continue to work with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and our law enforcement partners to aggressively pursue those who exploit HUD-funded programs for personal gain.”

 

According to U.S. Attorney Hertzberg, the charges, and other information presented in court: From April 2017 to the time of her guilty plea in this case, Jones served as Senior Vice President over the Housing Choice Voucher Program at the Atlanta Housing Authority, overseeing one of the largest Section 8 programs in the country. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funds Section 8 programs, including rental assistance payments to landlords on behalf of low-income families and individuals. Section 8 funds are limited, and there is often a long waiting list of low-income families seeking acceptance into the program. Housing authority staff are generally prohibited from receiving Section 8 payments for their own properties, and Section 8 landlords are typically prohibited from leasing to their own family members.

Former Cooper County R-IV School Board Vice-President Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud for Role in Misuse of School District Funds

 

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A former Cooper County R-IV School District board member pleaded guilty in federal court today for her role in a wire fraud scheme that defrauded the school district out of $385,000.

 

Ashley Benny, 41, of Bunceton, Mo., waived her right to a grand jury and pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Willie J. Epps to an information charging her with one count of wire fraud. This successful prosecution is one of many federal fraud cases pursued under the leadership of President Donald Trump and through the establishment of the Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.

 

Cooper County R-IV is a school district in Bunceton, Mo., with approximately 100 students. While serving as the school board treasurer in 2019, Benny was asked to research alternative investment options for the school district’s unallocated savings. Benny learned through a friend of a supposedly lucrative overseas “standby letter of credit” investment that carried no risk of loss. The school district agreed to Benny’s suggestion and voted to transfer $385,000 to a company called “AgFluent.” Prior to the board vote, Benny failed to disclose that she opened and controlled the AgFluent bank account and hoped to personally profit from the investment.

 

The investment was a scam, and the school district was defrauded out of $233,000 wired overseas by AgFluent. Contrary to AgFluent’s agreement with the school board, Benny then helped transfer the remaining school district investment funds to pay various other entities and expenses owed by a co-conspirator, including nearly $60,000 for the purchase of two semi-trucks and a $10,000 escrow payment on a failed land purchase deal. The school district never received any return on its $385,000 investment.

 

By pleading guilty today, Benny admitted that she is directly responsible for $146,518 in loss to Cooper County R-IV. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Benny must pay full restitution to the school district in this amount.

 

Under federal statute, Benny is subject to a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.

From 19 to 22 May 2026, Europol's headquarters in The Hague hosted over 40 law enforcement agencies, including Asset Recovery Offices (AROs), Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs), and specialised units focusing on money laundering and organised crime. The operation was supported by Eurojust, INTERPOL's Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre (IFCACC), and key private sector partners from the financial services and cryptocurrency industries. The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) and AMLA (Anti-Money Laundering Authority) also participated in the event.

While similar in its red, white and green band formation, the pre-revolutionary Iranian flag has a lion and the sun in the middle, while the official flag, changed following the Iranian revolution in 1979,has an Islamic symbol and phrasing, depicting the shift from a monarchy to a theocratic government.

 

The pre-revolutionary flag has been used by Iranians in the US and worldwide as a symbol of protest and standing against the current regime and, while prohibited at the 2022 World Cup, some fans managed to sneak the flag into stadiums in Qatar.

 

A report in The Athletic this weekdetails that Fifa intends to enforce the ban on the pre-revolutionary flag – and any similar paraphernalia – in the USA this summer. Despite the ongoing war with the hosts, Iran is scheduled to compete in next month’s Finals and has two matches scheduled in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.

 

When approached byThe Independent, a Fifa spokesperson referred to their official guidelines and Article 3.1.243 of their Stadium Code of Conduct, which states: “Any materials, including but not limited to banners, flags, fliers, apparel and other paraphernalia, that are of a political, offensive and/or discriminatory nature, containing wording, symbols or any other attributes aimed at discrimination of any kind against a country, private person or group on account of race, skin colour, ethnicity, national or social origin, gender identity and expression, disability, language, religion, political opinion or any other opinion, birth, wealth or any other status, sexual orientation or on any other grounds.”

 

The report inThe Athletic adds that Fifa is set to allow the Palestine flag into World Cup stadiums this summer, given it is the officially approved flag of a Fifa member association, in contrast to Iran’s pre-revolutionary flag.

 

Tickets for Iran’s group-stage games on the West Coast have sold well, with over 50,000 bought for their opening clash against New Zealand at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium on 15 June.

They are also set to play Group G favourites Belgium in LA on 21 June before their final group game against Egypt on 26 June in Seattle, which has also been designated as the Pride Match taking place on Seattle Pride weekend.

 

There is a scenario in which Iran could face the United States in Dallas in the round-of-32, if both countries finish second in their respective groups.

Make haggis legal again, Scotland urges US ahead of World Cup

A prominent Scottish butcher has launched a campaign for the US to legalise haggis, as the Tartan Army prepares to head across the Atlanticfor the World Cup.

 

US federal food regulations on offal have effectively banned haggis since 1971, preventing Scottish producers from exporting it.

 

Simon Howie Butchers, based in Perthshire,is spearheading a petition to "make haggis legal again". The initiative will also be fronted by Scottish broadcaster and journalist Gordon Smart. Football fans travelling to the US are being supplied with flags emblazoned with "no haggis, no party".

 

Simon Howie said: “Scotland-footballfans are widely recognised as the best in the world and they are about to make the trip of a lifetime, but they’ll be doing it without access to their national dish.

 

“With such warmth and long-standing affinity between Americans and Scots,we’re appealing to the USA to embrace this delicious delicacy and ‘make haggis legal again’.”

Scotland qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998 with the most dramatic 4-2 win over Denmark in November, but Clarke noted that the Scots fans stayed in their seats to celebrate.

 

Speaking at Hampden after naming his World Cup squad, he said: “That (Denmark game) just shows that you can enjoy yourself without going out on the pitch.

 

“There is no need for people to be on the pitch.

 

“The reputation of the Tartan Army and the Scottish fans is well known worldwide.

 

“Even over the disappointment in Germany (2024 European Championship), the Tartan Army were top supporters.

 

“They made a lot of friends in Germanyand I’m sure they will make more friends over in the States.

 

“I think the international scene is separate from the domestic scene so the feel-good factor is around the international team.

 

“The way the league season ended with the scenes on Saturday at Celtic Park was not good for Scottish football.

 

“It’s a bad look that doesn’t do anybody any favours. It’s much better that people celebrate but stay where they should stay.

 

“People invading the pitch is not right because player safety is endangered. That is not correct – anywhere.

911: Busch short of breath, coughing up blood day before death

Why is this such a mystery?

 

CONCORD, N.C. – NASCAR driver Kyle Busch experienced shortness of breath, felt he was overheating and was coughing up blood the day before his death, according to a 911 call obtained Friday by The Associated Press.

 

Busch died Thursday at age 41. No cause of death has been given, thoughhis family said earlier that he had been hospitalized with a "severe illness" days before he was to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

 

Busch wastesting in the Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord on Wednesday when he became unresponsive and was transported to a hospital in Charlotte, several people familiar with the situation told the AP.

 

The people spoke on condition of anonymitybecause details have not been disclosed by Busch's team or family.

 

During the emergency call placed late that afternoon from the General Motors training facility, an unidentified caller calmly told the dispatch:"I've got an individual that's [got] shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he's going to pass out, and is producing a little bit of blood, coughing up some blood."

 

Busch was lying on the bathroom floor inside the complex and the caller told dispatch, "He is awake," according to audio provided by the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office.

 

The man then gave directions on where emergency responders should go and asked that they turn off any sirens upon arrival.

 

NASCAR CEO Steve O'Donnell is scheduled to speak at a news conference later Friday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

 

The news of Busch's death sent shockwaves across the NASCAR community, and even Vice President JDVance took to social media, saying, "I had the opportunity to meet Kyle, one of NASCAR's greatest racers, on the campaign trail in 2024. Usha and I are praying for him and his family. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord."

 

Meanwhile, gloomy, gray skies hung over the track on an unseasonably cool day in Concord, which seemed a fitting background for the in memoriam photo of Busch on the videoboard.

 

Christopher Bell is among the drivers planning to run in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race Friday night, one that Busch had been scheduled to compete in.

 

Busch won last week's Truck series race at Dover the final win of his career giving him 234 victories across NASCAR's three national series, the most of any driver.

 

He finished 17th in the All-Star Race on Sunday.

 

"It's going to be very strange to be out there without Kyle in the field," Bell said. "It's going to take a long time before things feel back to normal."

 

Bell called Busch's death a "gut-wrenching feeling."

 

He said he spoke to Busch prior to the last Truck series race and said he seemed "normal, like completely normal."

 

"I guess it is a very stark reminder of how fragile life can be," Bell said.

Ukraine has rolled out full state honors for the remains of a World War II Nazi collaborator who has been repatriated from Luxembourg and will be buried in Kiev’s main military cemetery. The controversial exhumation comes around a month after Vladimir Zelensky announced plans to establish a “pantheon of outstanding Ukrainians.”

 

According to the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory,the coffins containing Andrey Melnik, the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), and his wife, Sofia Fedak-Melnik, entered the country in a solemn ceremony– which involved a ==national choir and embroidered flags – in Uzhgorod, western Ukraine.•=

 

It was attended by Irina Vereshchuk, the deputy head of Zelensky’s office, as well as local officials, members of the clergy, and veterans.

 

The remains will be sent to Kiev, where they will be reburied at the National War Memorial Cemetery on Sunday – with more pomp and circumstance planned.

 

Zelensky said on Tuesday that Ukraine has a “moral duty” to bring home those who “defended the idea of independence,” adding that preparations are underway for the exhumation of other figures, including OUN founder Evgeny Konovalets.

 

In late April, Zelensky announced that work had begun on creating “a Pantheon of outstanding Ukrainians,” saying the primary focus will be on the return of historical figures who are “of fundamental importance for the formation of Ukrainian national consciousness and for our state-building.”

Who was Melnik?

Andrey Melnik co-founded the OUN in 1929 and became the leader in 1938, following the assassination of its chief, Evgeny Konovalets, by Soviet intelligence. Around the same time,Melnik was recruited by Nazi Germany’s military intelligence service (the Abwehr) for espionage and sabotageoperations ahead of the planned invasion of the Soviet Union, according to Nuremberg trial documents.

 

Under Melnik’s leadership,the OUN split into two parts in 1940, with one part led by notorious Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera, who was later involved in ethnic cleansing in Nazi-occupied territories.

 

After the invasion of the Soviet Union,Melnik’s relations with the Nazis soured as Germany was in no hurry to give any semblance of independence to Ukraine. Melnik was placed under house arrest in mid-1941, then arrested by the Gestapo in January 1944 and held in Sachsenhausen concentration camp before being released that October as German forces retreated.

 

As the war ended, Melnik fled to the West and settled in Luxembourg, where he remained active among Ukrainian emigre networks until his death in 1964.

 

The OUN leader was not tried in the Nuremberg tribunal as it was mainly focused on major Nazi war criminals. The Western allies refused to hand him over to the Soviet Union for trial, arguing that he himself was a Nazi victim due to his time in a concentration camp.

 

How did Russia respond?

On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova saidUkraine is seeking to assemble “Nazi collaborationists and human-hating scum” from around the world to glorify them.

 

Zakharova asked whetherZelensky forgot to mention that those being honored “killed people on ethnic grounds,” and predicted that Bandera – whose faction was linked to the mass killing of tens of thousands of Poles in Volyn – would be next in line for repatriation.

 

She suggested that Kiev is trying to divert the public’s attention away from growing war fatigue, the conscription campaign, and corruption scandals involving Zelensky’s inner circle.

This is not the first challenge to Starmer, but Labour’s slump in recent local elections – to English councils,the Scottish Parliament, and Welsh Assembly – is especially bruising.

 

For the first time ever, Labour lost control of Wales, one of its traditional heartlands. Despite finishing joint second with Reform in Scotland,it was Labour’s worst ever result north of the border. In England, Labour lost almost 1,500 councillors in different parts of the country to parties on the left and right.

 

Calls for Starmer to resign intensified ahead The King’s Speech to reopen Parliament. A relatively unknown MP, Sarah West, offered to challenge Starmer if nobody else would. She ultimately backed down from her pledge, but around 90 of Labour’s 400 MPs called for Starmer to go or begin a leadership transition. Yet over 100 MPs publicly backed him.

 

So far, no leadership challenge has materialized, but potential rivals have made their moves. Wes Streeting has resigned as health secretary and, having no support to challenge Starmer himself, is now backing Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Manchester, who is planning to run for Parliament again. One MP voluntarily has given up his seat for Burnham to do so. More quietly, former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has also hinted at a challenge, and Labour’s left are urging former party leader Ed Miliband to run.

 

But why is Starmer surviving and why do Britons feel the urge to keep replacing their leaders? A few factors are important here.

 

First, there is no obvious alternative to Starmer within the Labour Party. Andy Burnham would lose an election to Parliament. Wes Streeting, on the party’s right, would lose a membership vote. Angela Rayner is not popular with the broader British electorate, and Ed Miliband has already lost an election as leader (with the British press incredibly harsh on him and his family).

 

The elections’ stubborn arithmetic is also illustrative. Beyond the headlines, Labour’s health is much better than it seems.

 

The Green Party, challenging Labour from the left, underperformed in these elections.Much of that had to do with recent antisemitism within the partyand its controversial leader, Zack Polanski.Although the separatists won in Scotland and Wales, it was not due to any appetite for independence. TheSNP remains deeply unpopular in Scotland(perhaps more so than Labour), but the unionist party votes were very split.

On the right, Reform also underperformed and appear to have peaked. Whilst Reform won the most councillors and came second in Wales, its vote share was down from last year’s elections.Also, increased voter turnout seemed to work against Nigel Farage’s party. Reform only won in places that voted for Brexit and is yet to attract any new voters. In other parts of the country, their vote never reached above 10%.

 

Translated to a General Election, Reform would fall far short of a majority. Some estimates show thatit would need to increase its vote share by 22 points to win any sort of governing majority. For that to happen, either the Conservatives or Labour (or both) would have to see their vote collapse, or voter fragmentation would need to be rife across the board.

 

Thus far, the Conservative vote has proven remarkably stubborn, as has the Liberal Democrats’. Labour is also clinging onto around 20% of the electorate, depending on the poll. As for the Greens, they did well primarily among students – a small slice of the electorate – and urban-based women.

 

On top of that, Farage is not popular with the British electorate. In every single head-to-head poll with Starmer – and all the other party leaders – Farage lost. Britons do not directly elect the Prime Minister, but cast votes for who will be living at 10 Downing Street. So, whilst Reform has led the polls for over a year now, it is losing support and Farage is a turn-off.

 

That brings us to Britons themselves. Why, indeed, are Britons so impatient with their leadership this century?Their appetite for regicide is greatly misunderstood.

 

It is worth remembering that a hundred years ago, from 1900-1926, Britain also went through eight Prime Ministers in quick succession (from three different parties). There are some parallels, even though the times were very different. As Winston Churchill famously quipped about the early 20th century, “the market was free, slaves were free, and conscience was free. But hunger, squalor, and the cold were also free, and people wanted something more than liberty.”

 

In Britain today, people want something more.After the 2008 financial crash, austerity, Brexit, COVID-19, and recent cost of living crisis, the British public is tired and impatient.

 

But unlike then,there is no new intellectual thinking to tackle today’s economic problems(mostly generated by Brexit). Instead, there aredemagogues and populists, shouting their empty promises and muddying the waters.

 

Starmer might be unpopular, but the sad truth is anyone else would be. Britain is close to going ungovernable because the population are too impatient. They are desperate to see government working in earnest, as Starmer promised it would.

 

Britain needs to have an honest conversation with itself about where it is going and how it will get there. To unite the kingdom, Britons need something more than the Football World Cup and the Amandaland TV show.

It was easier to envision a deal with Ali Khamenei. There is also a more than doubled risk of getting several forms of cancer as the immune system fails to dispose of aberrant cancer cells from various sources. Exposure to light at night is recognized by the World Health Organisation as being a Group 2A carcinogen (probably carcinogenic). We can therefore expect the current Group 2B status of wireless Smart meters to be elevated to Group 2A. Is the Government or Power Industry happy to take this risk with every household in the land? I hope not.

An incident involving 13 Soviet-designed MiG fighter jets chasing a mysterious star-shaped UFO was among the encountersdescribed in newly declassified top-secret files released after a decades-long legal battle with the US intelligence community.

One of the most dramatic incidents described 13 MiG fighter jets being scrambled after military radar detected a single unidentified object.

 

The NSA files do not specify where or when the incidents occurred or identify witnesses.However, repeated references to Soviet-made MiG fighter jets suggest some encounters unfolded during the Soviet period, including one report over China and another describing six MiGs “attacking said UFO.”

 

Other files describe encounters with star-shaped, disc-like, spherical, and cigar-shaped craft. One report detailed an “elongated ball of fire” that split into three glowing objects while moving across the sky.

 

In one witness account, an object emitted a “white luminous light” with a slightly “bluish”color. The report said it moved rapidly in vertical motions at high altitude and “kept turning around.” Another file described a “spherical or disc-like” UFO that was “brighter than the sun and about half the Moon’s diameter.”

 

The documents were released after the NSA initially denied access requests,extending a legal battle over UFO-related records dating back to a 1980Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the agency.

 

The release follows the Trump administration’s publicationof more than 160 UFO-related files earlier this month. The disclosure push came after earlier declassification orders tied to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. The UK Defense Ministry hasclaimed that two Russian fighter jets “dangerously” intercepted a British spy plane over the Black Sea, and released footage that it said showed the encounter. Moscow hasconsistently maintained that Russian pilots act in strict accordance with international law.

 

The video published by the British ministry on social media on Wednesday appears to show two Russian jets flying close to the aircraft.One of the jets appears to maneuver alongside the British plane, while another flies ahead of it before moving away.

 

TheBritish ministry claimed that a “Russian Su-35 aircraft flew close enough to trigger emergency systems” aboard the reconnaissance plane, while a Su-27 fighter was “flying as close as six meters” from its nose. Defense Secretary John Healey accused the Russian pilots of “dangerous and unacceptable behavior… towards an unarmed aircraft”while admitting that the British plane was able to continue its mission without any issues.

 

The RAFRivet Joint aircraft involved in the incident is equipped with advanced electronic surveillance systems. London said that the aircraft had been conducting a “routine flight” over international waters in the Black Sea. The region has seen heightened military activity throughout the Ukraine conflict, including Ukrainian drone and Western-supplied missile strikes targeting Russian infrastructure.

 

Moscow has not officially commented on the British claims.

 

Russian fighter jets have repeatedly fended off RAF spy flights over the Black Sea during the conflict. In July 2024, the Russian military had to scramble jets on two such occasions in just two days.

he got very upset at the other three when he got the letter (I didn't sign it).

the thing was: my sister got FREE USE of the summer home for like 7 years! Then she didn't buy. The executor had fixed it up FOR HER thinking she would. She had no idea how good he was being to her, not so much to me and the others. Finally he sold the place. She didn't buy it. He offered it at a great price.

Turns out she never really wanted it. But she didn't complain about the free summers at the lake.

I love them all and understand their type of brokenness. They don't seem to get me, though.

In a provincial address Thursday evening, Danielle Smith said an additional question will be added to an Oct. 19 ballot, asking whether Alberta’s government should commence the legal process necessary to hold a binding referendum on separating from Canada.

 

Premier Danielle Smith says Albertans will be able to vote in the fall on whether they want the province to hold a binding referendum on separating from Canada.

 

In a pre-recorded speech broadcast Thursday evening, Smith said a question will be added to a provincewide referendum in October that will ask, “Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?”

 

Smith said a vote in favour of separation doesn’t trigger the process, but will instead allow Alberta to start a legal process required to hold a binding referendum.

 

In her address on Thursday, she also affirmed that she would vote in favour of staying in Canada.

In a ruling last week, Justice Shaina Leonard of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta put a stop to a petition calling for a referendum on independence that was being circulated by the pro-separatist group Stay Free Alberta. That petition asked Albertans if they wanted Alberta to “cease to be part of Canada to become an independent state.”

 

Smith had strong words in her address onThursday for what she called “a legal mistake by a single judge” and a “troubling court decision.”

 

Judge overturns Elections Alberta’s approval of separation referendum petition

Smith and Stay Free Alberta said they are going to appeal the decision. However, the premier, in her speech,reminded people the process could take years to resolve.

 

“Kicking the can down the road only prolongs a very emotional and important debate, and muzzling the voices of hundreds of thousands of Albertans wanting to be heard is unjustifiable in a free and democratic society,” Smith said.

 

“It’s time to have a vote, understand the will of Albertans on this subject, and move on.”

 

Smith spent part of her address speaking directly to the more than 300,000 people who signed the Stay Free Alberta petition.

 

She said the tide has turned since Mark Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister. Since Carney became prime minister, there have been more discussions between the federal government and Alberta about how to advance energy and resource development.

 

Smith said she has empathy for Albertans who want independence, and understands why they are frustrated with the province’s position in the federation.

 

She had a message for them Thursday night: don’t give up on Confederation.

 

“I ask you to please consider joining me to vote for Alberta to remain in Canada, and not give up on our beautiful country just as we’re gaining respect and the tide has turned in our favour,” Smith said.

 

However, Jeff Rath, a separatist proponent who is legal counsel for Stay Free Alberta, was not happy.

"Let's have a referendum on having a referendum. Danielle Smith just lost her base!"

The 10-year Treasury yield is perhaps the most important financial benchmark in the global fiat system, as it drives valuations and market trends worldwide. It is widely—and erroneously—regarded as the risk-free rate of return.

 

The 10-year Treasury yield can be thought of as a key barometer of the US dollar-based fiat system—a critical measure akin to its beating heart.

 

Bond yields move inversely to bond prices. When bond prices fall, bond yields rise.

 

A rising 10-year Treasury yield signals trouble for the US dollar because it means investors are selling Treasuries, which pushes up the US government’s borrowing costs. That is why the 10-year Treasury yield is a major pain point for the US government.

 

The 10-year Treasury yield was 3.97% when the war started. Now it is around 4.60%, an increase of roughly 63 basis points.

 

I expect the 10-year Treasury yield to keep climbing over the coming weeks and months—until it forces the Fed’s hand. At that point, the intervention will be sold as “stability,” but the mechanism will be familiar: suppress yields by debasing the currency.

 

At today’s debt levels, every 1 basis point increase in the government’s average borrowing cost adds roughly $3.9 billion in annual interest expense. So a 63 bps rise is not trivial—it translates to nearly $250 billion in additional yearly interest costs, materially widening a 2025 budget deficit that was already around $1.8 trillion.

 

Higher yields mean the US government must pay tens or even hundreds of billions more in interest on its debt. At the same time, the global economy faces even greater added costs because Treasury rates serve as the benchmark for borrowing worldwide.

 

That is not an insignificant move. However, given all the headwinds I have discussed, I suspect the 10-year Treasury yield is headed much higher because investors will demand higher yields to compensate for rising inflation. Further, if Hormuz remains closed, drastically higher oil prices are all but certain. Higher energy prices mean higher prices across the economy and higher official inflation rates, which means investors will demand still higher yields to compensate.

 

The problem is that interest on the federal debt is already over $1.2 trillion and is now the second-largest item in the budget. The US government cannot afford yields going much higher because the interest expense would push it toward bankruptcy.

 

I am not sure how—or even if—the US government can manage this situation. Something has to give, and we will not have to wait long to find out what.

 

The Iran war may prove to be more than another foreign policy disaster. It could be the trigger that exposes the fragility of the entire dollar-based financial system.

Trump Admin Preparing to Strike Iran: Report

 

President Trump is preparing to hit Iran with a new round of military strikes, CBS reported on Friday evening.

 

CBS noted that no final decision has been reached.

 

Earlier Friday, President Trump raised eyebrows after he announced he would not be attending his son Don Jr’s wedding this weekend because it is “important” for him to remain in DC “during this important period of time.”

 

“While I very much wanted to be with my son, Don Jr., and the newest member of the Trump Family, his soon to be wife, Bettina, circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so,” Trump said.

The Trump administration was preparing Friday for a fresh round of military strikes against Iran, according to sources with direct knowledge of the planning, even as diplomacy continued.

 

No final decision on strikes had been reached as of Friday afternoon.

 

“Circumstances pertaining to Government” are keeping President Trump from attending his son Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding this weekend, he said in a social media post. The president had planned to spend Memorial Day weekend at his golf property in New Jersey but will now return to the White House.

 

Some members of the U.S. military and intelligence community canceled their plans for the Memorial Day weekend in anticipation of possible strikes, several sources said.

 

Defense and intelligence officials began updating recall rosters for U.S. installations overseas as tranches of troops stationed in the Middle East rotate out of theater, part of an effort to reduce the American military footprint in the region amid concern about possible Iranian retaliation.

 

The US and Israel first struck Iran in late February.

 

The Pentagon said Iran’s missile capabilities have been decimated.

 

Earlier Friday Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there has been “slight progress” in Iran peace talks but said the “tolling system” in the Strait of Hormuz is unacceptable.

16 people were injured following an explosion and fire at a shipyard on Staten Island.

 

The FDNY says they received a report of workers trapped around 3:30 p.m., and a fire in a basement of a metal structure in the back of shipping docks.

 

They say a major explosion occurred around 4:20 p.m.

 

At least 16 people were injured, including one civilian and two firefighters who suffered serious injuries, two firefighters who suffered moderate injuries, and nine firefighters and two EMS members who suffered minor injuries.

 

They were taken to area hospitals.

US President Donald Trump has postponed signing an executive order tightening government oversight of artificial intelligence, arguing the proposed rules could undermine US competition with China, though media outlets cite pressure from tech moguls.

 

Reports about the proposed regulation first surfaced earlier this month in the New York Times, which said the Trump administration was mulling reviewing advanced AI models before public release.

 

The plan reportedly included a voluntary framework for developers to engage with US authorities before launching new systems, partly to prevent fallout from potential AI-driven cyberattacks, and give officials early access to models with possible Pentagon applications.

 

Asked about the order during a press event on Wednesday, Trump said he postponed the signing because parts of the proposal could slow American AI development and weaken its supposed lead over China.

Musk later denied influencing Trump’s decision.

 

“This is false,” he wrote on X. “I still don’t know what was in that [executive order] and the president only spoke to me after declining to sign.”
