For years, animal testing watchdog White Coat Waste has documented how Munster’s reckless, cruel experiments on primates and bats waste millions in taxpayer dollars while posing serious biosafety and national security risks.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan announced that Munster, 53, a Dutch citizen and Chief of the Virus Ecology Section at NIH’s Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana, and his colleague Claude Kwe, 38, a Cameroonian research fellow in Munster’s lab, were charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy to smuggle monkeypox into the United States and making false statements to federal law enforcement.

According to the Justice Department complaint, Munster and Kwe flew into Detroit Metropolitan Airport’s McNamara Terminal on January 25 after traveling from Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, where a monkeypox outbreak was actively underway.

Customs and Border Protection officers noticed the pair carrying a large black plastic case. When questioned, both men falsely claimed it contained only “diagnostics and testing equipment.”

According to the DOJ, “subsequent investigation by CBP and FBI agents revealed that the case actually contained 113 vials in Styrofoam coolers. As of the date of the complaint, the FBI has tested 20 of the 113 vials. Seventeen of them contained deactivated monkeypox virus, one contained the Chickenpox virus, and two contained only human DNA.”

The press release added, “the work of both men is focused on ’emerging viral pathogens’ and how those pathogens ‘cross the species barrier.’ They work at a Biosafety Level 4 laboratory, which employs the highest level of biosafety precautions for scientific research of known and potential human pathogens.”

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. did not mince words: “These NIH experts apparently broke our laws by smuggling viral pathogens on a packed commercial airplane from an outbreak in the Republic of Congo. Let that sink in.”

FBI Detroit Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Runyan added, “No researchers should believe their positions, credentials, or professional status place them above the law… The allegations in this case are serious. They involve the dangerous and unlawful smuggling of deactivated Mpox virus into the United States and alleged efforts to mislead our federal agents.”

According to the library's own description, the Writer-in-Residence program is intended to provide advice and assistance to local writers while also allowing the selected author to devote time to a specific writing project.

Under the terms of the program, the writer is required to spend at least 16 hours per week fulfilling public-facing duties, including reading manuscripts and meeting with aspiring writers in Regina. The remainder of the writer's work time can be devoted to personal projects.

Many contemporary blueprints are available for the formation of a new, sovereign state. In fact, over 70 new countries have been created around the world just since 1966. The process for all of those new countries to gain independence wasn’t simple either. Many of them didn’t have guiding documents such as the Clarity Act to chart the pathway for them. Yet they managed.

“There would have to be a negotiation between Canada and Alberta, to negotiate the terms of departure and issues like that would have be considered,” Kennedy said. There is currently ongoing negotiation between Canada and Alberta just to get a pipeline approved. The province is getting plenty of practice in dealing with intransigent political leaders in Ottawa already.

FYI: Persona non grata is a Latin phrase translating to “an unwelcome person”. It describes an individual who is socially, professionally, or diplomatically rejected.

Alberta will begin issuing driver’s licences and ID cards that feature an individual’s identity information, personal health number, and a citizenship marker beginning July 2, Premier Danielle Smith said in a social media post.

The change will eliminate the province’s paper health cards and will consolidate all essential information onto an individual’s driver’s licence or an Alberta ID card for those who do not drive.

U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra said he amplified a post by U.S. President Donald Trump calling again for Canada to join the United States because he wanted to present the president’s viewpoint.

“As the president’s representative to Canada, I present the president’s views, the United States’ views to Canada,” Hoekstra told reporters in Quebec City on June 3.

Trump made a post on Truth Social on June 1 that simply read “51st State!” alongside a link to a Bloomberg article about Canada hitting a technical recession. Statistics Canada reported on May 29 that Canada’s GDP declined for the past two consecutive quarters on an annualized basis, meeting the common definition of a technical recession.

Hoekstra’s X account reposted Trump’s post the following day. In his remarks to reporters on June 3 he noted he doesn’t manage the social media account alone.

“Mechanically, I don’t do all the reposting and retweeting myself. My understanding is we repost 100 percent of the president’s tweets that deal with Canada,” he said.

The B.C. government has opted to extend a moratorium on new mineral claims across large areas of the north of the province amid ongoing land-use discussions and negotiations with First Nations.

The temporary suspension applies to new mineral and placer claims across northwestern and north-central B.C. stretching from the interior toward the Alaska border, and will stay in effect until Jan. 31 of next year instead of expiring on June 3 as previously planned.

“The orders under the Environment and Land Use Act scheduled to expire on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, are being extended to provide sufficient time to complete the work with the Tahltan First Nation, Taku River Tlingit First Nation and Kaska First Nations, including more meaningful engagement with industry, local governments and other interested parties,” B.C.’s Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals stated.
