The Canada–US–Mexico agreement may not be renewed after comments from US President Donald Trump, hinting at a move forward without renewing the deal. The president made the comments from the Oval Office on Wednesday.

CUSMA, as it's known in Canada, and known in the United States as USMCA, is scheduled for a formal review on July 1, six years after it took effect. The agreement itself does not expire until 2036, but it includes a provision allowing any member country to withdraw with six months’ notice.

Trump, who signed the agreement during his first term in office in 2018, pointed again to that termination clause when discussing its future: "USMCA did one thing that I loved. After six years, it comes up for renewal. I don't know that I'm going to renew it," he said Wednesday. "We don't need anything Canada has."

Alberta's police watchdog has launched an investigation into a letter sent by the Edmonton Police Service to Crown prosecutors during the criminal prosecution of a woman convicted in the death of an eight-year-old girl.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) announced Thursday it is investigating allegations arising from a Sept. 8, 2025 letter sent by Edmonton police to a senior official with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service during the prosecution of Ashley Rattlesnake.

Rattlesnake later pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of eight-year-old Nina Napope Dumais and was sentenced to eight years in prison on Feb. 27, 2026.

During sentencing, Court of King's Bench Justice Jody Fraser raised concerns about potential misconduct related to the letter, prompting further scrutiny of the matter.

ASIRT said its investigation follows a referral from Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis, who asked the Police Review Commission (PRC) on June 5 to review the issue and determine whether further action was warranted.

The then-acting chief executive officer of the PRC subsequently initiated a complaint under Section 42.1 of the Police Act, classified it as a Level 1 complaint and directed ASIRT to investigate.

Level 1 complaints include incidents involving death or serious injury, as well as serious or sensitive allegations involving police conduct.

"ASIRT's role is to provide independent oversight when serious or sensitive questions arise about police conduct. This investigation will be conducted carefully, fairly and without predetermined conclusions," said acting executive director Matthew Block.

"Our responsibility is to follow the evidence, assess the matter within our mandate and provide the public with confidence that the process is independent."

ASIRT emphasized that opening an investigation and classifying a complaint as Level 1 does not constitute a finding of misconduct.

The agency said it will not comment further on evidence, investigative steps or possible outcomes while the matter remains under investigation.

ASIRT operates as an independent branch of the Police Review Commission and is responsible for investigating serious incidents and sensitive allegations involving police officers across Alberta.

Activation fees have traditionally fluctuated between $30 and $80, discouraging Canadians who wanted to capitalize on competitive offers, the CRTC said.

The CRTC characterized the new rules, outlined in the Consumer Protections Action Plan, as an effort to make it easier for Canadians to find less expensive cellphone and internet plans, without fear of incurring extra fees that could undermine their potential savings.

“We are increasing competition so that Canadians have access to more choice and affordable Internet and cellphone services. But having more choice is not enough,” CRTC CEO Vicky Eatrides said in an April press release. “Canadians need simple ways to take advantage of that choice. Our recent decisions make it easier to manage services, shop around, and switch plans.”

Statistics Canada data shows meat prices have risen sharply over the past five years. The average price of beef striploin rose from $22.87 per kilogram in April 2021 to $42.42 in April 2026, while ground beef climbed from $9.19 to $15.59 over the same period.

Chicken breast prices rose 14.4 percent in that time, while bacon increased 15.3 percent, salmon climbed 21.5 percent, and pork loin prices rose 8.5 percent.

The increases coincide with rising food and consumer prices across Canada, further squeezing household budgets. StatCan’s consumer price index rose roughly 20 percent in the five years through April 2026, while grocery staples such as tomatoes, lettuce, and onions posted even larger increases.

Pinizzotto, an 18-year veteran of the Toronto Police Service (TPS), was shot at in an apartment unit on Martha Eaton Way at about 5:42 a.m. during an exchange of gunfire while officers were executing the search warrant, police said in a post on X.

The officer was transported to Sunnybrook Hospital, but later died, Demkiw said.

“This loss will have a profound impact on the Toronto Police Family. Our Service, our members, and all members of the larger policing family are deeply saddened,” Demkiw said.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he is not concerned about the cancellation of a planned Washington D.C. reception with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce earlier this week, following reports that White House officials lodged complaints about him with the chamber.

The chamber has publicly attributed the cancellation of the June 8 event with board chair Ross Perot Jr. to “scheduling conflicts,” but it has since been reported by multiple media outlets that the event was actually cancelled due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s disapproval of Ford.

Ford addressed the rumours during a June 10 press conference after a reporter asked if the U.S. administration’s “deep dislike” of him was responsible for the cancellation.

“If that’s the case, you know, so be it,” Ford replied. “I know I have an incredible relationship we’ve built with Ross Perot Jr. He’s a gentleman, he’s a leader, and we'll have another time to get together. I’m not worried about that whatsoever.”

Ford added that he could not definitively confirm whether the White House had exerted pressure on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to call off the event.

“You’re going to have to ask the chamber that,” he said. “I don’t know that 100 percent, but we'll see how we move forward.” Continue…

Alleged Canadian cyber attacker facing extradition to U.S.

A Saskatoon man who allegedly conspired to install malware, steal login credentials, and mine cryptocurrency from American educational institutions is facing extradition to the United States.

The cyberattack accusations were levelled against Ryan James Roach in Saskatoon Court of King’s Bench, where he was ordered to be taken into custody to await extradition following a hearing.

Justice Grant Currie’s written decision from May 7 does not presume guilt or innocence. Rather, it means there is sufficient evidence to justify trial through extradition.

Roach will not be surrendered for at least 30 days. He has a right to appeal and to apply for judicial interim release.

Quebec bans energy drinks for children under 16, a first for Canada

Kids under 16 will no longer have access to energy drinks in Quebec after legislators voted Thursday to make the province the first in Canada to enact a ban on sales of the drinks for youth.

The bill responds to the 2024 death of 15-year-old Zachary Miron, who died after a Red Bull he drank interacted with his medication.

Under the legislation, it will become illegal to sell or give energy drinks to kids. Vendors will ask for photo ID when selling energy drinks, and the beverages will no longer be sold in vending machines or online.

Proponents of a ban pointed to Zachary's death, but they also called energy drinks dangerous for young people in general, not just those taking certain medications. Continue…

The schizophrenic woman who committed a notorious killing of an innocent stranger in a downtown Toronto Shoppers Drug Mart more than 10 years ago has been granted an absolute discharge, freeing her entirely from the restrictions of the justice system.

In 2015, Rohinie Bisesar, then 40 and now 51, stabbed Rosemarie Junor in the cosmetics section of the drug store in Toronto’s financial district underground PATH, following the malicious command hallucinations of a voice in her head she called the “entity.”

Junor, 28, who also went by “Kim,” was newly married and worked in a downtown private medical clinic. She died five days later in hospital of a single stab wound by a small kitchen knife that pierced her heart.

“While the tragedy cannot be undone and will always be on our minds, Ms. Bisesar no longer is a significant threat to the safety of the public, and the law requires that an absolute discharge must be imposed. Ms. Bisesar’s commitment to her present health has substantially contributed to this result,” reads the Ontario Review Board’s new decision. Continue…

The Parole Board of Canada has granted unescorted temporary absences for the “personal development” and rehabilitation of a woman who helped kill a pregnant Inuit student from Labrador a dozen years ago in Halifax and dumped her body beside a highway in a hockey bag.

Victoria Lea Henneberry is serving a life sentence for the second-degree murder of Loretta Saunders in February 2014. In a decision released Wednesday, the parole board approved two 72-hour unescorted temporary absences (UTAs), so Henneberry, 40, can visit a halfway house.

“Your case management team believes it is desirable for you to participate in the proposed UTA so that you can focus on a gradual release to the community while allowing your risk factors to be closely monitored,” said the June 2 decision.

“This UTA allows a structured and supervised opportunity to assess your behaviour, decision-making and ability to comply with conditions in a community setting.”

Henneberry was in a minimum-security prison in Ontario last year. The parole decision out of Kingston, Ont., doesn’t indicate where she is imprisoned now, or where the halfway house is located that she’s planning to visit.

A spokeswoman for the parole board said Wednesday she could not divulge those locations because of inmate privacy.

The parole board granted Henneberry 30 days of unescorted leave in the fall of 2024 to take “personal development” courses at a halfway house.

But that was “prematurely cancelled days prior to its completion due to numerous violations of rules,” and Henneberry’s “emotional instability (self-reporting of suicidal ideation),” said the decision. Continue…

Canada’s bishops, reflecting on the “sobering” 10th anniversary of euthanasia legalization, called for a renewed respect for “life” and a rejection of the “complacency with the status quo on euthanasia in Canada” today, noting the deadly practice can “never” be morally acceptable.

“On this 10th anniversary, we pray for all those whose lives have been lost to “MAID.” We also pray for their loved ones, many of whom continue to carry grief, confusion, regret, or unanswered questions,” the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) wrote in a June 10 message.

“On this occasion, we reject complacency with the status quo on euthanasia in Canada. Formed by the Gospel, we are called to draw near to those who suffer, not to ignore, trivialize, or abandon them in their pain or despair, but to accompany them with compassion, practical care, and hope (cf. Lk 10:30-37).”

The message was made in a statement by the “Standing Committee for Family and Life to the Catholic Faithful in Canada and All People of Good Will Voicing Concern and Calling for Prayers on the 10th Anniversary of Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide (“MAID”).” Continue…
