Trump went off on the Senate Parliamentarian, noting that she was installed by former Senate Leader Harry Reid and Barack Hussein Obama and that she is a “nasty holdover from Mitch McConnell (A man who has proven to be very disloyal to John Thune!).”

McConnell, he added, “decided to keep her because he loved giving Trillions of Dollars to the Democrats, but for the Republicans, including the Wall, where I ended up having to go ‘around him’ to build over 1,000 Miles, and close up our Open Border, he gave NOTHING!”

To address what the Department of Finance called “global conflicts and supply disruptions,” the Liquidity for Airline Sector Resilience program will offer up to $150 million each in loans to Canadian airlines who agree to abide by certain conditions including limits of executive pay and dividends as well as “Buy Canadian” commitments.

The loans will have to be paid back and will be given “on an as-needed basis” to carriers struggling with high jet-fuel prices, according to Ottawa.

“Global events continue to create uncertainty in energy markets, increasing costs for industries around the world, including aviation,” Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said in the June 8 announcement of the loan program, noting the earlier pause on the federal fuel excise tax in effect from April 20 to Sept. 7, which he says brings down jet fuels by 4 cents per litre.

“By building on existing relief measures with targeted and temporary support for Canada’s airline sector, we are helping maintain connectivity, protect Canadian jobs, and reduce pressures on travellers during this period of elevated fuel costs,” Champagne added.

Peel Regional Police say they have arrested a former Air Canada pilot accused of flying domestic and international passenger flights since 2009 without the required licence.

Geoffrey Wall, 59, of Barrie, Ont., was arrested on June 1 following a fraud and forgery investigation by the police service, known as Project Icarus, Peel police announced at a June 9 press conference.

The investigation began in January after Transport Canada initiated a regulatory review into the licensing requirements and credentials for Wall, who had a 27-year career with Air Canada, Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich said.

After starting his career as a commercial pilot in 1998, Wall was promoted to captain in 2009 and assumed command of passenger flights.

As a captain, Wall was required to have an airline transport pilot’s licence to fly passengers, but Peel police allege Wall misrepresented himself and his credentials to Air Canada and regulatory officials using fraudulent licensing documents.

Liberal MP Judy Sgro says she plans to lead a delegation of MPs to Taiwan in October. The announcement comes as China imposed sanctions on New Zealand lawmakers who recently visited the island nation.

Sgro, who chairs the Canada-Taiwan Friendship Group in Parliament, said at a parliamentary committee meeting on May 26 that she will lead a delegation to Taiwan in October with parliamentarians on both sides of the aisle.

She confirmed the planned delegation to The Canadian Press this week. She said the Prime Minister’s Office has not contacted her about the trip, adding that MPs have never needed permission for such visits.

“I don’t need confirmation from the centre. This is a parliamentary friendship group. We’re going on our own time,” Sgro said. “There’s never been any interference or any suggestion, ever, to me that we should not be doing that—not then or now.”

She said such parliamentary exchanges are “extremely important” and called Taiwan “a beacon of hope in that part of the world for democratic principles.”

Her comments come after the Chinese ambassador to Canada warned in April against parliamentarians visiting Taiwan. The Chinese Communist Party views self-ruled Taiwan as a breakaway province, despite never having governed the island nation, and seeks to place it under Beijing’s rule. Continue…

Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday morning said the $6.4-billion Gordie Howe International Bridge linking Windsor and Detroit will open “at the end of the week.”

While talking to reporters on his way to a cabinet meeting on Parliament Hill, he also said the bridge is “a symbol, but also a fact of cooperation” between Canada and the United States.

A source with knowledge of the event said a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the long-awaited bridge, which adds a third crossing to one of North America’s busiest trade corridors, is planned for later this week. However, the source said the bridge would not open to traffic that same day and did not provide a date for the ribbon-cutting.

Meanwhile, two sources not authorized to speak publicly told Detroit-area media outlets on Monday afternoon that such a ceremony for the bridge was scheduled for Friday. Continue…

An Ontario Provincial Police officer who was once in charge of security for the premier of Ontario is suing his police service and his police union claiming he was ruined by an arrest on gun charges that were later dismissed by a judge who savaged the flawed prosecution — including concerns that police witnesses lied.

The lawsuit, filed last Tuesday by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Staff Sergeant Roberto Manca, claims the OPP’s actions destroyed his law enforcement career and drained him financially while his union failed to adequately support him.

Manca, 56, remains an OPP officer who has been under suspension since 2020, after a fellow officer complained that Manca and three other officers exhibited “tyrannical conduct,” including during firearms training, according to Manca’s lawsuit. The state of Israel is “the most successful land‑back project, the greatest decolonization project,” a New Zealand Māori activist told the first-of-its-kind Building Indigenous‑Jewish Friendship conference in Toronto.

“From my Māori perspective, a key point is that there was always a continuous Jewish presence in the land; they kept the fires burning, and that is what indigeneity looks like to us,” Dr. Sheree Trotter told roughly 70 activists, academics and community figures convened at Toronto’s Beth Torah synagogue on Monday.

The conference was the culmination of a weekend of local Indigenous-Jewish programming that included nearly 40 Indigenous people marching in the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto’s Walk with Israel, a Sunday dinner-talk with Concordia University professor Csaba Nikolenyi on early 20th-century Zionism, and a Sabbath lecture by Justice Harry S. Laforme at Temple Sinai.

“Indigeneity is demonstrated by historical, collective continuity with a distinct ethnic identity, language, culture, rituals or traditions, economic, social, legal, and religious and spiritual belief systems that predate subsequent invaders or colonizers,” Laforme told Temple Sinai congregants.

“In my view, Israel is the product of the greatest decolonization project in modern history, and this fact does not make it a colonial entity.”

Laforme is Anishinaabe, and a member of the Mississauga of the Credit First Nation. In 1994 he was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice, and in 2004 was appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal and is the first Indigenous lawyer to be appointed to an appellate court in Canada. Major privacy-focused tech companies are threatening to leave Canada if Bill C-22 (the “Lawful Access Act”) becomes law in Canada. The legislation has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, cybersecurity experts, and technology firms due to its loose requirements on data retention and overall security concerns.

Online platform Signal, which prides itself on end-to-end encryption, told The Globe and Mail that they would “rather pull out of the country than be compelled to compromise on the privacy promises we have made to our users.” Udbhav Tiwari, Signal’s vice president of strategy and global affairs, emphasized that end-to-end encryption is incompatible with the types of exceptional access the bill could demand.

DuckDuckGo, known for its privacy-oriented search engine, confirmed through CEO Gabriel Weinberg that it would also withdraw its VPN service from Canada if the bill passes in its current form.

NordVPN, one of the largest VPN providers in the entire world, also responded to the legislation in an X post, stating that they “will consider all viable options,” including “limiting, or if necessary removing” their presence from Canadian jurisdiction. Continue…
