Context:

Iran’s fired a missile barrage on Israel (June 7): in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs earlier that day. Israel’s defenses intercepted the attacks, but this marked Tehran’s first direct strike on Israel since the U.S.-brokered April ceasefire.

President Trump publicly announced he was calling Netanyahu to urge him NOT TO retaliate, stating, “Each of them had their fun. Israel had its strike, and Iran had its strike. We don’t need another one.” He emphasized that further escalation would derail ongoing U.S. negotiations for a broader deal with Iran.

In a Financial Times interview published today, President Trump said Netanyahu “won’t have any choice” but to accept whatever Iran deal the U.S. reaches, stating: “I call the shots. I call all the shots. He [Netanyahu] doesn’t call the shots.”

Netanyahu’s reported response: Israeli officials say Netanyahu pushed back during the call but ultimately “pseudo-agreed” to delay any strike on Iran for several more days to give diplomacy a chance.
