Forgotten chapter in NASA history: The fight to save the space chimps

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – After more recent exposés on the experience of chimpanzees in the southwest, it’s worth looking back at the interview series from George Knapp that blew the case of the space chimps wide open – and saved many of their lives.
Even as Americans are once again focused on sending humans to space, the use of animals in off-world exploration is a forgotten chapter worth remembering.
Chimpanzees were often used during tests in the early space program. A few chimps were sent into space, while many more were used for government research.
The chimps were owned by the Air Force and were supposed to be cared for by private contractors after the space program ended.
The winning bidder for most of the chimps was Fred Coulston and his Coulston Foundation.
Unfortunately for most of the chimps, there were many years ahead of medical and other experiments in the hands of the Coulston Foundation.
Many of the animals died after being dissected while still alive, injected with diseases, used for crash test dummies, sprayed or injected with insecticides, pesticides, carcinogens, poisons and diseases such as TB and polio.
Animal groups were outraged, especially in light of Coulston‘s record on animal welfare.
“As an example, three [chimps] were cooked to death,” former Senator Harry Reid said. “They were in a little room. Temperatures got to 140 and 150 degrees, they were actually cooked to death. Alive.”
This story has a happy ending for some chimps, however. In September 2002, the Save the Chimps organization purchased the Coulston facility and transformed it into the world’s largest sanctuary for chimpanzees.
It would serve as temporary housing for the chimps until the organization could create a more permanent outdoor sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Alefosio led a multidisciplinary logistics squadron of 175 military, civilian and contractor personnel, supporting space launch operations and Vandenberg’s intercontinental ballistic missile test sites. During the ceremony, Whitlock assumed command from Alefosio.
The 30th LRS ensures a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible vehicle fleet, while delivering high-quality travel and transportation solutions and maintaining a robust supply chain that provides timely access to equipment, parts and fuel.

A museum complex in Russia’s Rostov Region has been hit in a drone attack, Governor Yury Slyusar has said
At least 12 people have been injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on Russia’s Rostov Region, Governor Yury Slyusar has said.
The strike targeted a museum and a monument dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who liberated the area from the Nazis during World War II in 1943, according to the official.
A Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) hit the main exhibition hall and the information center of the Sambek Heights museum complex, Slyusar said in a statement on Telegram on Saturday, calling the incident a “great tragedy.”
Ten of the people injured were subsequently hospitalized, he added.
The Sambek Heights monument was initially created in 1980 to honor the deeds of the Soviet troops who fought in the area.
In 2013, the regional government approved a public initiative to establish a museum complex near the monument, which eventually opened in 2020.
The complex is also commonly known as the “people’s museum” as it was built with donations provided by the people living in the region. Slyusar branded the attack “an act of exceptional cynicism” on the part of the Ukrainian military.
Kiev is ramping up long-range strikes on Russia, targeting civilian and energy infrastructure, as Ukrainian frontline troops suffer setbacks caused by manpower shortages and superior Russian weaponry.
On Friday, the Russian military reported intercepting 660 Ukrainian kamikaze drones in just one night – the largest number to date.
On Saturday, Volgograd Region Governor Andrey Bocharov said that one person was killed and 11 injured in a Ukrainian attack on an industrial facility in the regional capital. Two people are in critical condition, he added.
Russia maintains that these attacks, which it sees as terrorist strikes, will not make it abandon its key security goals in the conflict.
Moscow previously warned that it would respond to such attacks with “systematic and consistent strikes” on Ukraine’s military infrastructure, including drone production facilities, command posts, and “decision-making centers.”

Ukraine struck a major industrial facility in the Russian city of Volgograd, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday, while a Russian drone attack killed a man in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region overnight.
Ukraine has stepped up its long-range aerial attacks on Russian military industries and energy facilities, aiming to cut Moscow’s revenue for the war and make Russians feel the consequences of the invasion, now in its fifth year.
The campaign, which Zelenskyy has said aims to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table, has choked Russian fuel supplies and military deliveries, stalling Moscow’s efforts on the battlefield and heaping pressure on Putin, Western officials and analysts say.
Writing on X, Zelenskyy said that FP-5 Flamingo missiles hit the Titan-Barrikady facility in Volgograd in southwestern Russia, describing it as a “major industrial complex” where Russia “produces artillery systems and specialized military equipment, including components for missile launch systems.”
According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the facility manufactures equipment for missile systems, including self-propelled launchers and transport-loading vehicles for the Iskander-M missile system, which it said is “the same system Russia regularly uses to strike Ukrainian cities.”
Volgograd Gov. Andrei Bocharov confirmed an attack on a business in the region’s Krasnooktyabrsky district, saying 10 people had been wounded and taken to a hospital. He said production facilities at the site were damaged but did not identify the company.
Ukraine’s state security service said Saturday morning that Ukrainian forces also struck an oil pumping facility in Russia’s Vladimir region that supplies fuel to Moscow, for the second time this month.
The attacks came a day after Ukraine launched what appeared to be one of Kyiv’s biggest drone assaults since the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion more than four years ago.
The major nighttime attack targeted a dozen Russian regions, Russian-held Crimea and the surrounding seas, Moscow’s Defense Ministry said Friday, noting that Russian air defenses intercepted 660 Ukrainian drones.
Zelenskyy said Thursday he had ordered “a 40-day influence operation,” believed to mean an escalation of attacks, aimed at “compelling (Russia) to end the war” after U.S. peace efforts over the past year yielded no breakthrough.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine’s Sumy region, a 66-year-old man was killed in a Russian drone strike on a private residence in the region, regional head Oleh Hryhorov said Saturday.

Israel will not retreat from Lebanon unless Hezbollah is disarmed and the safety of Israeli residents is guaranteed, Defense Minister Israel Katz revealed during a recorded statement issued on Saturday.

US raises threat level in Strait of Hormuz to 'substantial' amid fire exchange with Iran - report
The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), which is overseen by the US Navy, raised the threat level in the Strait of Hormuz to “substantial” on Saturday, CNN reported.

106 passengers’ terrifying drone close call at Newark

A United Airlines Boeing 737 came dangerously close to striking a drone Friday afternoon as it made its final approach into Newark Liberty International Airport — an incident that has renewed urgent questions about unauthorized drone activity near one of the country’s busiest aviation hubs.
The pilot of United Flight 1513, carrying 106 passengers and five crew members after departing Key West, Florida, radioed air traffic control to report the near miss.
According to ATC audio verified by CNN, the pilot described the device as circular and approximately three feet wide, passing roughly 100 feet below the aircraft.
The flight landed safely at around 5:30 p.m., and passengers exited the plane at the gate without incident.
A second drone spotted in the same airspace
The incident was not isolated. Around the same time, the pilot of a United Express flight operated by GoJet Airlines also radioed a drone sighting in the Newark area, reporting the device at approximately 2,000 feet — well above the ceiling where recreational or commercial drones are legally permitted to fly.
Two separate reports within such a narrow window raise serious concerns about the scale of unauthorized drone activity in the skies above one of the New York metropolitan area’s major airports.
The back-to-back sightings suggest the Friday afternoon airspace above Newark was more congested with unmanned devices than regulators or controllers had any reason to expect.
What the rules say
Federal Aviation Administration regulations strictly prohibit drone operation in controlled airspace and near manned aircraft without official authorization.
Despite those rules, the FAA records approximately 100 drone sightings per month near U.S. airports — a figure that underscores how persistently the problem continues despite existing restrictions.
Newark Liberty International Airport sits within some of the most tightly regulated airspace in the country, given its proximity to New York City and the sheer volume of commercial traffic it handles daily.
Operating a drone in that zone without clearance is a federal violation that can carry significant legal penalties for the operator.
The aftermath
United Airlines confirmed the incident in a statement, noting the flight landed safely and customers departed at the gate as normal. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew members.
It remains unclear whether authorities have identified the operator of the drone encountered by Flight 1513.
FAA and law enforcement agencies typically investigate such incidents, though drone operators are rarely tracked down in cases like these — a persistent frustration for aviation safety advocates and airline industry officials who have long pushed for tougher enforcement.
With air travel at peak summer levels and drone ownership continuing to expand, Friday’s close call is an uncomfortable reminder of how quickly an unauthorized device can enter restricted airspace and how little margin for error exists when a commercial aircraft is on final approach carrying more than 100 people on board.

Inside the First UFO Disclosure Forum on Capitol Hill

The Disclosure Foundation held the first public forum of its kind on Capitol Hill June 25th, bringing senators, House members, scientists, and former officials into the Kennedy Caucus Room under the theme humanity at the edge of discovery.
The nonpartisan nonprofit also released new polling.
According to the Disclosure Foundation, a survey of 303 adults taken this month found that nearly nine in ten Republicans and nearly nine in ten Democrats want the government to release more information about UAP, the term officials now use in place of UFO.
New development came from Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida.
She said her team is handing the White House a list of names to be granted immunity, working with Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, so that credible whistleblowers can share what they know without facing retribution for violating their security clearances or, in some cases, the Espionage Act.
Luna added that she has not personally seen any of the material.
As reported by NewsNation, the White House has publicly said it does not have information on these alleged programs, which leaves the same administration being asked to protect whistleblowers unable to confirm what they claim to know.
Jordan Flowers, executive director of the Disclosure Foundation, laid out a legal path for witnesses.
In reference to a legal memo his team prepared, Flowers said a person can make a protected disclosure to Congress in a classified setting even under a nondisclosure agreement, and that no one has ever been prosecuted for doing so.
The legislative side moved as well. According to remarks from former Defense Department official Marik von Rennenkampff, Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota announced he would reintroduce the UAP Disclosure Act with Senator Chuck Schumer.
The bill defines a legacy program as a secret government effort to retrieve and reverse engineer craft of unknown origin, and it references non-human intelligence throughout the text.
Representative Eric Burlison announced that MIT Lincoln Laboratory has agreed to hand over a 1952 recording catalogued as a flying saucer talk, briefed by Edward Ruppelt, who led Project Grudge and Project Blue Book.
According to Burlison’s office, the recording is tied to the July 1952 events over the capital known as the Invasion of Washington.
Burlison argues sensitive material may sit with private contractors because they fall outside Freedom of Information Act requests, a point whistleblower David Grusch has also made.
On the economy, Jordan Flowers, also a former investment banker, rejected the idea that disclosure would crash the markets, noting that earlier file releases came and went with markets steady.
A different view comes from Helen McCaw, a former Bank of England analyst, who, as reported by The Times of London, wrote to governor Andrew Bailey urging a contingency plan and warning of what she called ontological shock and a possible collapse in confidence.
The day closed on the same open question raised throughout, whether the government is even capable of holding a secret this large for this long.

The ousted former Fox News host, 57, has spoken out on the possibilities of UFOs and aliens existing on social media and in interviews over the years.
Tucker Carlson Suggested Extraterrestrials Were 'Spiritual Entities'
During a 2024 guest appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Carlson described extraterrestrials as "spiritual entities" that are "supernatural," as they are "outside" the natural world.
"They don't behave according to the laws of science," he told the podcaster at the time. "They've been here a long time. And there's a ton of evidence that they're under the ocean and under the ground."
Tucker Carlson Fully 'Convinced' on UFOs
And Carlson isn't just hamming it up for his audience. According to a source, the political commentator is "convinced that UFOs do exist."
"People don’t always understand what Tucker’s trying to say, but his delving into UFOs is one of the few things he’s not doing solely for attention," a source told Radar. "He’s spent an awful lot of time on research, looking into conspiracy theories and cover-ups."
Tucker Carlson Wants to 'Carry on' UFO Discussion With Elon Musk
Calling it a "hot topic" that "merits scrutiny," just after the 2024 presidential election, the source suggested to Radar that second Trump administration "may be more open and start sharing some UFO intel" in resurfaced comments.
While Musk, who is the founder of Space X, has said previously that his satellites have yet to find any aliens, "Tucker’s grateful that Elon Musk is cautiously interested in the subject and hopes to carry on the discussion," the source shared.
"A lot of people don’t believe in aliens or UFOs," added the source, "but Tucker won’t let up."
Tucker Carlson's Nightmarish Encounter With a 'Demon'
But it isn't only extraterrestrials that Carlson believes could be out there. Back in 2024, he also claimed to have had a horrifying experience with a demon or some other entity in his bed.
Initially, he said in his Christianities series on YouTube that he believed he was having "the weirdest dream," but swiftly changed his mind when he allegedly discovered injuries on his body and blood in his bed.
"I woke up, and I couldn’t breathe, and I thought I was going to suffocate. And I walked around outside and then I walked in and my wife and dogs had not woken up. And they’re very light sleepers," Carlson continued.
"Then I had these terrible pains on my rib cage and on my shoulder, and I was just in my boxer shorts and I went and flipped on the light in the bathroom, and I had four claw marks on either side underneath my arms and on my left shoulder. And they’re bleeding."
He further alleged he did not have "long nails" and couldn't have done it himself.
"It didn’t make any sense and it doesn’t now … But yeah, that happened," he claimed. "No one has to believe me, I don’t care, but that happened to me."
