LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – After more recent exposés on the experience of chimpanzees in the southwest, it’s worth looking back at the interview series from George Knapp that blew the case of the space chimps wide open – and saved many of their lives.

Even as Americans are once again focused on sending humans to space, the use of animals in off-world exploration is a forgotten chapter worth remembering.

Chimpanzees were often used during tests in the early space program. A few chimps were sent into space, while many more were used for government research.

The chimps were owned by the Air Force and were supposed to be cared for by private contractors after the space program ended.

The winning bidder for most of the chimps was Fred Coulston and his Coulston Foundation.

Unfortunately for most of the chimps, there were many years ahead of medical and other experiments in the hands of the Coulston Foundation.

Many of the animals died after being dissected while still alive, injected with diseases, used for crash test dummies, sprayed or injected with insecticides, pesticides, carcinogens, poisons and diseases such as TB and polio.

Animal groups were outraged, especially in light of Coulston‘s record on animal welfare.

“As an example, three [chimps] were cooked to death,” former Senator Harry Reid said. “They were in a little room. Temperatures got to 140 and 150 degrees, they were actually cooked to death. Alive.”

This story has a happy ending for some chimps, however. In September 2002, the Save the Chimps organization purchased the Coulston facility and transformed it into the world’s largest sanctuary for chimpanzees.

It would serve as temporary housing for the chimps until the organization could create a more permanent outdoor sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida.

A museum complex in Russia’s Rostov Region has been hit in a drone attack, Governor Yury Slyusar has said

At least 12 people have been injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on Russia’s Rostov Region, Governor Yury Slyusar has said.

The strike targeted a museum and a monument dedicated to the Soviet soldiers who liberated the area from the Nazis during World War II in 1943, according to the official.

A Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) hit the main exhibition hall and the information center of the Sambek Heights museum complex, Slyusar said in a statement on Telegram on Saturday, calling the incident a “great tragedy.”

Ten of the people injured were subsequently hospitalized, he added.

The Sambek Heights monument was initially created in 1980 to honor the deeds of the Soviet troops who fought in the area.

In 2013, the regional government approved a public initiative to establish a museum complex near the monument, which eventually opened in 2020.

The complex is also commonly known as the “people’s museum” as it was built with donations provided by the people living in the region. Slyusar branded the attack “an act of exceptional cynicism” on the part of the Ukrainian military.

Kiev is ramping up long-range strikes on Russia, targeting civilian and energy infrastructure, as Ukrainian frontline troops suffer setbacks caused by manpower shortages and superior Russian weaponry.

On Friday, the Russian military reported intercepting 660 Ukrainian kamikaze drones in just one night – the largest number to date.

On Saturday, Volgograd Region Governor Andrey Bocharov said that one person was killed and 11 injured in a Ukrainian attack on an industrial facility in the regional capital. Two people are in critical condition, he added.

Russia maintains that these attacks, which it sees as terrorist strikes, will not make it abandon its key security goals in the conflict.

Moscow previously warned that it would respond to such attacks with “systematic and consistent strikes” on Ukraine’s military infrastructure, including drone production facilities, command posts, and “decision-making centers.”

Record numbers of victims are waiting more than a year for their cases to be heard in the UK, and clearing the backlog “could take nearly 300 years,” Courts minister Sarah Sackman has said.

According to Ministry of Justice figures, there is currently abacklog of 80,061 casesin Britain’s crown courts, and370,722cases in lower magistrates’ courts, an increase of 5% and 11% on last year, respectively.Some 6,000crown court cases have been waiting for more thantwo years, with 2,000 rape cases held up for more than a year.

Theclosure of courtsand government institutions during theCovid-19 lockdownsis directly responsible for soaring wait times, with the crown court’s caseload doubling since 2020.

Speaking to Sky News on Friday, Sackman claimed that the ruling Labour Party is “starting to stabilize the backlog,” but “at this pace,it could take nearly 300 yearsto clear the backlog to pre-pandemic levels.”

Britain’s outgoing prime minister, KeirStarmer, has added to this backlog by pushing for theprosecution of hundreds of people for expressing right-wing and anti-immigrant sentiment online, and by proscribing Palestine Action, a decision that has led to the arrest and prosecution of more than 3,300 people.

In the meantime,Starmer has freed thousands of hardened criminalsfrom British prisons tomake way for those convicted of speech crimes. More than 1,000 convicts were released early in 2024, as British police rounded up people who participated in or encouraged anti-immigration riots.Up to 7,000 morewill be released early this September, with the Conservative Partywarning that “killers and rapists, including the evil rape gang perpetrators” will be among them.

Starmer’s government has argued that the court backlog can be tackled with increased investment, and by handling more cases at magistrates’ courts, where they are typically resolved faster.

However, theprime minister has also utilized the crisis to reshape the UK’s justice system. A bill put forward by the government earlier this year wouldabolish jury trials for all but the most serious offenses,such as murder and rape. The bill has beencondemned by lawyersand civil rights groups, with the Bar Councilcalling it “an unpopular, untested and poorly evidenced change to the jury system,” and the Society of Asian Lawyers defending juries as a “crucial check against state overreach.”

Ukraine struck a major industrial facility in the Russian city of Volgograd, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday, while a Russian drone attack killed a man in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region overnight.

Ukraine has stepped up its long-range aerial attacks on Russian military industries and energy facilities, aiming to cut Moscow’s revenue for the war and make Russians feel the consequences of the invasion, now in its fifth year.

The campaign, which Zelenskyy has said aims to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table, has choked Russian fuel supplies and military deliveries, stalling Moscow’s efforts on the battlefield and heaping pressure on Putin, Western officials and analysts say.

Writing on X, Zelenskyy said that FP-5 Flamingo missiles hit the Titan-Barrikady facility in Volgograd in southwestern Russia, describing it as a “major industrial complex” where Russia “produces artillery systems and specialized military equipment, including components for missile launch systems.”

According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the facility manufactures equipment for missile systems, including self-propelled launchers and transport-loading vehicles for the Iskander-M missile system, which it said is “the same system Russia regularly uses to strike Ukrainian cities.”

Volgograd Gov. Andrei Bocharov confirmed an attack on a business in the region’s Krasnooktyabrsky district, saying 10 people had been wounded and taken to a hospital. He said production facilities at the site were damaged but did not identify the company.

Ukraine’s state security service said Saturday morning that Ukrainian forces also struck an oil pumping facility in Russia’s Vladimir region that supplies fuel to Moscow, for the second time this month.

The attacks came a day after Ukraine launched what appeared to be one of Kyiv’s biggest drone assaults since the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion more than four years ago.

The major nighttime attack targeted a dozen Russian regions, Russian-held Crimea and the surrounding seas, Moscow’s Defense Ministry said Friday, noting that Russian air defenses intercepted 660 Ukrainian drones.

Zelenskyy said Thursday he had ordered “a 40-day influence operation,” believed to mean an escalation of attacks, aimed at “compelling (Russia) to end the war” after U.S. peace efforts over the past year yielded no breakthrough.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine’s Sumy region, a 66-year-old man was killed in a Russian drone strike on a private residence in the region, regional head Oleh Hryhorov said Saturday.

Inside the First UFO Disclosure Forum on Capitol Hill

The Disclosure Foundation held the first public forum of its kind on Capitol Hill June 25th, bringing senators, House members, scientists, and former officials into the Kennedy Caucus Room under the theme humanity at the edge of discovery.

In reference to a legal memo his team prepared, Flowers said a person can make a protected disclosure to Congress in a classified setting even under a nondisclosure agreement, and that no one has ever been prosecuted for doing so.

The legislative side moved as well. According to remarks from former Defense Department official Marik von Rennenkampff, Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota announced he would reintroduce the UAP Disclosure Act with Senator Chuck Schumer.

The bill defines a legacy program as a secret government effort to retrieve and reverse engineer craft of unknown origin, and it references non-human intelligence throughout the text.

Representative Eric Burlison announced that MIT Lincoln Laboratory has agreed to hand over a 1952 recording catalogued as a flying saucer talk, briefed by Edward Ruppelt, who led Project Grudge and Project Blue Book.

According to Burlison’s office, the recording is tied to the July 1952 events over the capital known as the Invasion of Washington.

It seems so easy to believe this idea. Oil contributes greatly to polluting the environment. The industrial age has intensified its use greatly. The more we use, the more we lose fresh air, even the ozone. And therefore it seems almost divine justice that we are about to exhaust this so-called "fossil fuel" within several decades and two hundred years, this cursed blessed hydrocarbon which took millions of years to produce.

And, therefore, it almost seems we get what we deserve: a petro-powered society in which once the oil supposedly runs out we will suffer mass annihilations of population, famine, war, total deceleration, a withdrawal into the caves. And, therefore, we should have our prophet From the Wilderness.com, Michael Ruppert, predict this on an ongoing basis. And his biblical tome, Crossing the Rubicon shall subhead the big idea: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil. Well, no, not so, kimosabe, not by a long shot.

To begin with, oil is not a fossil fuel. This is a theory put forth by 18th century scientists. Within 50 years, Germany and France's scientists had attacked the theory of petroleum's biological roots. In fact, oil is abiotic, not the product of long decayed biological matter. And oil, for better or for worse, is not a non-renewable resource. It, like coal, and natural gas, replenishes from sources within the mantle of earth. This is the real and true science of oil. In fact, working in the 1950s, Russian and Ukrainian scientists, cut off from the Western World's oil supply, applied their keen minds to the problem and, by the 1960s, had thoroughly demolished the idea of oil as a 'fossil fuel,' Is it any wonder then that Russia is one of if not the leading producers and exporters of oil. The isolation of the Cold War forced Russia to dig deeper, literally, to find oil deeper in the earth in some places, and to look in other places where no one had thought to look to reveal more. This while America feels incumbent upon itself, since it claims oil production and discovery has peaked and will fade to nothing in several decades, that America's feels it must make war to take other people's oil: Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, the Caspian Basin, Sudan, etcetera.

And to others who have oil, it must either rattle its saber, as with Venezuela, threaten to kill its president who will not buckle and sell all his oil to America. And with the Saudis we will protect them from their own terrorists and any Saddam that comes along. And we will get in bed with them so long as we can have the lion's share of their oil, and the say-so as to who gets the rest. And therein lays the evil genius, secret and sham of the 'Peak Oil' put on.

If oil, as coal, and natural gas, restores itself by nature, if we will more likely run into it then out of it, how do we continue to make money on it? Certainly not by giving oil away at some reasonable price. After World War II, oil was about 25 cents a gallon at the pump. Even given the spiraling inflation since then-last week I paid $3.50 a gallon for it in New York City, 14 times that price. A week after the summer holiday season ended (the peak usage season), oil is down to $3 a gallon. I doubt if I'm the only one who notices oil's price shoot up every summer, then slither down a bit after, and then climb up in the middle of the winter when the heating bills waft in, and old and poor people who can't afford the hikes begin to freeze and die in their own homes.

Someone is shilling for the American petro-brokers, because 'Peak Oil' is a wonderful concept to use to go out and war for "the control" of oil resources. So that a barrel of crude can suddenly jump from $20 to $70 to $100 a barrel, or to two, three or four hundred dollars a barrel, therefore providing exponentially expanding profits for oil companies and oil suppliers who relish the idea of having an "inelastic demand" for their gasoline. 'Peak Oil,' as writer Dave McGowan points out in his priceless Newsletters, which you can find at Educate-Yourself.org, 'Peak Oil' will even drive oil companies like Shell, to attempt to shut down an incredibly profitable facility, like the one it owns in Bakersfield, California,.

This Bakersfield facility, like others in California, runs along the San Andreas fault line, which abounds along its route through the state with rich crude oil and natural gas fields, products of seepage from the earth's mantle, from the tectonic plates, as Dave would say, 'passing gas' and rumbling as they move. In fact, oil and the family of hydrocarbons are often found at volcanoes and fault lines, as they are in deserts, watery gulfs, and sea basins. Let's demystify it all.

He cut the home’s telephone lines and proceeded to wake the household. When Raymond Artzner went outside to confront Occhicone, he was shot and killed.

After shooting him, Occhicone broke into the home through a locked door and shot Martha Artzner four times.

His former girlfriend and her child managed to flee the home while Occhicone was breaking in.

In 1987, Occhicone was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. Multiple appeals filed by his legal team since then have failed.

His execution is currently scheduled for 6 p.m. on July 28, 2026.

Saturday developments:

Ukraine Closes Week Of Record Drone Attacks On Russia By Hitting Important Weapons Plant

Ukraine announced Saturday that it used its Flamingo cruise missiles overnight to strike Russia's Titan-Barrikady weapons plant, which reportedly manufactures parts for its powerful Oreshnik missile.

The military plant is in Volgograd, formerly Stalingrad, which is a major industrial city in southwest Russia. Writing on X, President Zelensky described it as a "major industrial complex" where Russia "produces artillery systems and specialized military equipment, including components for missile launch systems."

"Every Russian defense facility involved in the war against Ukraine is a legitimate target for our long-range strikes," he wrote.

I know Tucker personally, so I chose to confront him directly, face to face. And I did,” Bruesewitz wrote.

“Here’s what I told him: It’s flat-out wrong to claim Trump covered up for Epstein … It’s a dishonest smear to claim that Trump is a slave to Israel. Trump’s position on Iran has remained consistent from day one: Iran should never have a nuclear weapon,” he continued.

Over the course of the interview, the two discussed all three topics, with Bruesewitz consistently defending a president with whom Carlson has publicly feuded, saying in April that he’s “tormented” by his past support for Trump.

Bruesewitz characterized the conflict with Iran as “a 90-day blip” that resulted in minimal casualties and did not lead to the ground war critics warned might ensue.

Carlson countered that the case for war — preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons — rested on Israeli intelligence rather than American findings and that the intelligence turned out to be false.

Bruesewitz later argued that coordinated and possibly foreign-funded campaigns were driving online pressure to extend the conflict.

As an example, he cited a foreign agent contract held by former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale through his firm Clock Tower X, a deal Bruesewitz claimed was worth $46 million.

Public records show a smaller verified total. Parscale’s firm signed a $6 million services agreement with Havas Media Network in August 2025 and has since received $15 million from the company on behalf of the Israeli state, according to the Daily Caller News Foundation. The same operation has been used to attack Carlson himself through shell websites, the outlet reported.

Bruesewitz also told Carlson that in June 2025, an unnamed friend had reached out to him about an unnamed Israeli foundation that wanted to hire him to push anti-Iran messaging on social media.

On the subject of Epstein, Bruesewitz argued that Trump deserves credit for the files reaching the public and rejected any suggestion of a cover-up. He also characterized outgoing Rep. Thomas Massie, who attacked Trump over the Epstein files and then lost to a Trump-endorsed primary challenger, as an opportunist who never mentioned the files during the Biden administration. Carlson pressed for more accountability, naming LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman as someone whose ties with Epstein should be investigated.

The two also discussed the SAVE America Act, the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and Florida’s GOP gubernatorial primary contest between James Fishback — who Bruesewitz called “not an honest person” — and Rep. Byron Donalds.

Despite some clashes, the tone of the conversation remained amiable and Bruesewitz and Carlson agreed on the importance of keeping foreign money out of American political media.

Some local Jewish leaders are starting to push back. They have jumped to the defense of Jeffries, a moderate pro-Israel stalwart who represents the 8th Congressional District in Brooklyn.

“Just hours after the election, they’re publicly threatening the highest ranking black Democratic official in America,” David Greenfield, CEO of the Met Council, a Jewish charity in New York, wrote on social media on Wednesday.

Responding to the “You’re next!” chants, Greenfield warned that the “next DSA move is not to make peace, but rather go to war with liberal Dems.”

Mark Treyger, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council, praised Jeffries on social media on Wednesday, defending him as “a dedicated public servant defined by honesty, hard work, honor and an unwavering commitment to delivering for the people he represents.”

Treyger predicted Jeffries would outlast the wave of left-wing insurgents. “Political winds come and go. Character endures,” he wrote.

But the winds right now seem to be at the backs of the Democratic Socialists of America, the left-wing political organization that promotes taxing the wealthy, expanding publicly funded social benefits and has placed increasing emphasis on pro-Palestinian advocacy and anti-Zionism. Nine of 10 candidates backed by New York City’s DSA chapter won their primaries Tuesday night.

Of all the DSA’s triumphal moments, however, the most widely circulated clip from the party was not a speech, nor one of many moments of celebration, but the call to oust Jeffries.

“You’re next! You’re next!” attendees chanted after Jeffries appeared on TVs at the 99 Scott Studio event space, where chants of “DSA!” and “Free Palestine!” also broke out.

“Hakeem Jeffries is not going to sleep well tonight,” wrote DSA member Asad Dandia, Brooklyn’s borough historian, who was appointed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. “Good. We’re coming.”

Billionaire Leon Black walks out of Epstein investigation hearing

Billionaire investor Leon Black walked out of a closed-door hearing with the congressional committee investigating late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after refusing to answer questions on non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), say lawmakers.

Black, whose name comes up in the Epstein files released by the justice department, testified voluntarily. But he left after he was asked about NDAs he may have signed, the panel chairman said.

The House of Representatives Oversight Committee issued two subpoenas for Black to share NDAs and give an on-camera deposition under oath.

Black left Apollo Global Management, which he co-founded, in 2021 amid scrutiny over his Epstein ties. He denies wrongdoing.

"We want to know, was Jeffrey Epstein involved in the NDAs?" the committee's Republican chairman, James Comer, said on Friday.

"Was he involved in writing? Was he involved in awarding funds to the women for the NDAs? What was the reason for the NDA? We want to know everything about the NDAs."

Nondisclosure agreements, commonly called NDAs, are contracts where both parties agree to keep information confidential, often as part of a settlement or employment agreement.

Black's attorneys confirmed to the BBC he walked out after his legal team "made their final comments".

The private equity tycoon hired Epstein as a wealth management adviser and allegedly spoke to him about personal matters, including extramarital affairs from which NDAs resulted, according to the BBC's media partner CBS News.

During his brief appearance on Friday, Black reportedly told the committee he had paid Epstein $158m (£120m) for legitimate purposes over the course of their years-long association.

That amount was the subject of a Senate investigation into whether Black had intentionally overpaid Epstein, cloaking money paid for personal reasons in the guise of financial services.

Black's attorneys have pointed out that an internal investigation at Apollo by the Dechert law firm concluded the fees that Black paid to Epstein were for legitimate tax advice.

Like many others who have spoken to the committee as it investigates Epstein's connections to the wealthy and powerful, Black said the disgraced financier had deceived him.

"I knew Jekyll. I didn't know Hyde," he said in his opening statement, a copy of which his lawyer shared with the BBC.

Black continued: "With the benefit of hindsight, I now know, as does the world, that Epstein was engaged in horrific, sordid activities. I feel terrible for Epstein's victims.

"I want to state clearly that I did not know about this nefarious activity until Epstein was charged with trafficking in July 2019."

Black denied ever abusing a woman, or being with an underage woman, or sex trafficking, or paying Epstein for access to women, or being blackmailed by him.

Black's attorney, Susan Estrich, called the subpoenas "a planned political stunt".

"Mr Epstein had no involvement with any NDAs, whether they exist or not," she said, adding that the committee "did not ask a single question about the legitimate payments to Epstein for professional services on tax and estate matters".

Black had a six-year affair with a former Russian model, Guzel Ganieva, which ended in allegations of abuse, according to court records.
