Indiana senator’s bill would codify Trump’s birthright citizenship order

07/14/26 04:09 PM ET. Senate

Indiana Republican Sen. Jim Banks on Monday introduced a billthat would codify President Trump’s Day 1 executive order reshaping the definition of birthright citizenship in the U.S.

The Citizenship Act of 2026 requires that any person who enters the U.S.“without authorization or for the purpose of engaging in birth tourism is considered an invader.”

Banks’s office said in a statement thatthe bill would find that “illegal immigration and birth tourism constitute an ongoing invasion and amends federal law to confirm that children born to illegal aliens and birth tourists are not entitled to automatic citizenship.”

“The Supreme Court’s birthright citizenship decision was an unprecedented assault on American sovereignty, and we must do whatever it takes to save our country,” Banks said in the statement.“I’m leading the Citizenship Act to reverse the effects of this consequential ruling and ensure the millions of illegal aliens that invaded our country can’t continue to exploit our immigration system.”

Banks told Fox News that the bill was inspired by Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s concurring opinion saying Trump’s order conflicted with federal birthright citizenship law passed by Congress in 1940.

Kavanaugh joined the 6-3 majority upholding birthright citizenship and ruling Trump’s order unconstitutional. The high court stated that such a change could only be ratified by a constitutional amendment.

Trump relented and urged members of Congress to take on the task of changing the law with a constitutional amendment.

Banks became the second Republican lawmaker seeking to codify Trump’s executive order. Last week, Rep. John McGuire III (R-Va.)introduced the Birthright Citizenship Clarification Act to codify the order and strike down the jus soli or “right of the soil” legal principle that grants citizenship to anyone born within a nation’s territory.

The Virginia lawmaker’s amendment would strike citizenship for those who are children of a mother with lawful temporary presence and a father without citizenship, as well as other less common situations, like children born on a foreign ship or children of foreign government officials.

Rep. Brian Babin (R-Texas) introduced his own bill to address birthright citizenship one day after Trump issued his executive order last year. The bill required children born in the U.S. to become a citizen if one parent was a citizen, a lawful permanent resident or an immigrant who legally entered the country and served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Trump made his birthright citizenship executive order one of his Day 1 policies upon retaking the White House. It would require a baby born on U.S. soil to have at least one parent with citizenship or permanent legal status to gain birthright citizenship.

Days after the high court’s ruling, Trump said he would have the justices rehear his case.

“I will be asking for a Rehearing by the United States Supreme Court, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This miscarriage of justice will destroy America if they don’t change their absolutely insane decision.”

Trump says ICE won't halt traffic stops after recent fatal shootings

Wed, July 15, 2026 at 9:59 AM

(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday said federal immigration agents won't end vehicle stops, one day after officials announced a ‌temporary pause in such stops after agents fatally shot two men in ‌Texas and Maine.

"We must be strong, tough, and smart, and we CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.'s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!" Trump wrote in a social media post.

On Tuesday, Trump administration officials said the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency had ordered its officers to suspend most vehicle stops around the country after two men were ‌shot and killed by ICE agents during such stops six days apart.

An ICE agent on Monday killed a driver from Colombia in the coastal Maine town of Biddeford, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Portland. An ICE officer in Houston on July 7 fatally shot a Mexican national while trying to stop his vehicle.

"It's not a policy change, it's a temporary pause," Trump's border czar Tom Homan told Fox News Channel ‌in an interview on Tuesday referring to the vehicle stop suspension.

"This is going to be a short-term review to make sure ICE agents are safe and doing the right thing," Homan told the television network, adding that officers will use other options to make arrests.

The back-to-back shootings sparked protests in Maine, Houston and Boston and raised questions ‌over ICE agents' lack of body cameras.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which overseesICE, has characterized both men as "illegal aliens" but acknowledged neither was the intended target of deportation operations that led ‌to their deaths.

Federal authorities have offered no evidence to support contentions that either man posed a threat to ICE agents or the public at large justifying the use of lethal force to stop them.

At least seven people have been shot dead ‌during federal immigration enforcement operations since January 2025, when Trump launched mass deportations after returning to office following campaign promises of an immigration crackdown.

Why England vs. Argentina is World Cup's best, angriest, most chaotic rivalry

Mark Ogden

ATLANTA – England vs. Argentina is not just your average World Cup semifinal. In addition to being two of the top-four ranked nations according to FIFA, it's arguably one of the most iconic World Cup rivalries of them all, extending over 60 years of controversy, hostility and era-defining moments involving some of the biggest names ever to play the game. When the two teams meet Wednesday, they will add another chapter to the rich and tempestuous story of two footballing giants.

It is Diego Maradona and the Hand of God, David Beckham's red card humiliation and his redemption four years later and a Wembley sending off that sparked a diplomatic incident and the introduction of red and yellow cards.

Since the 1980s, soccer games between the two nations have also been played with a political backdrop, following the 1982 military conflict between Great Britain and Argentina over the disputed Falkland Islands / Islas Malvinas. While hardly at the forefront of Wednesday's game, it has been an unfortunate but inescapable reality cited by players on both sides of this fixture.

But with one of football's classic rivalries resuming on Wednesday for the first time since a 3-2 England victory in a friendly in 2005 this will be their first World Cup clash since 2002 ESPN has spoken to players involved in previous meetings, combined with historical recollections, to illustrate just why England vs. Argentina is so compelling.

Additional reporting from James Olley, Tom Hamilton, Damian Didonato

England 1-0 Argentina, 1966: Shirt-swapping banned after Wembley furor

The first World Cup meeting between the two nations was an uneventful 3-1 group stage win for England in Chile in 1962, but when they met again in a quarterfinal at Wembley Stadium in 1966, the game would go down in infamy.

England manager Alf Ramsay described Argentina's players as "animals" after the game a 1-0 England victory that would be referred to as "el robo del siglo" ("the theft of the century") in Argentina because of captain Antonio Rattin's red card and claims that Geoff Hurst's winning goal was offside.

German government to trim climate fund spending under budget plans

The German government plans to scale back a range of subsidy programmes financed through its Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF) over the coming years, the Finance Ministry said on Wednesday.

The fund finances measures to help Germany meet its climate goals. It supports programmes ranging from subsidies for heat pumps and electric vehicles to energy efficiency and industrial decarbonization.

The ministry said that, in principle, funding that has not yet been committed will be reduced by 30%, although no programmes will be halted altogether. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Cabinet still must approve the measures.

The KTF is financed mainly through revenues from Germany's national carbon pricing system and the European Union's Emissions Trading System. It will also receive €100 billion ($114 billion) over the coming years from Germany's €500 billion special infrastructure and climate neutrality fund, equivalent to €10 billion annually.

The government has already announced that subsidies for installing heat pumps and other climate-friendly heating systems will be reduced in the coming years, with greater means-testing of applicants.

Other planned cuts will affect programmes supporting climate-friendly transport, energy-efficient urban redevelopment, energy research, energy-efficiency advisory services and subsidies for low-emission commercial vehicles, buses and rail transport, according to Cabinet documents seen by dpa.

The government described the approach as an "intelligent lawnmower" strategy, referring to broad reductions across programmes.

The Finance Ministry noted that annual budget allocations for subsidy programmes are typically not fully spent within a single year.

Measures deemed strategically important, including a planned discounted industrial electricity price for energy-intensive companies, will be exempt from the cuts, and funding for measures to reduce energy costs will actually increase next year.

The ministry said the Climate and Transformation Fund must contribute to efforts to consolidate the federal budget as Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil seeks to close multibillion-euro funding gaps.

Under the government's draft 2027 budget, €2.7 billion in emissions trading revenue that would otherwise have flowed into the fund will instead be redirected to the core federal budget.

Environmental groups have accused Klingbeil of raiding the fund to plug budget shortfalls.

‘You’re Such a P*ssy!’ Dave Portnoy And Adam Carolla Roast Ro Khanna Over Israeli Detention ‘Media Op’

Sean James.KEK

Jul 15th, 2026, 12:36 pm

Adam Carolla and Dave Portnoy took turnsmocking Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) for claiming he was recently “detained” by Israeli settlers and the IDF, with both guys saying the liberal lawmaker came across like a trembling wimp in the footage.

“I don’t know why these people have no shame,” Carolla said during the Tuesday episode of his podcast. “It’s so embarrassing, especially when guys say ‘I was scared for my life.’ Nothing happened, btch. You’re such a pssy.”

Portnoy agreed and said he “couldn’t believe” Khanna released video of the alleged ordeal.

“I can’t believe it either! Carolla said, “It’s just people talking to him, no one is detained.”

The podcast veteran continued by making fun of Khanna for griping that Israeli settlers kicked his tires.

“Oh my goodness, well you’re gonna have to be in therapy for the rest of your life then!” Carolla said sardonically. “When did guys become such colossal p*ssies?”

Portnoy added that it was a shameless attempt by Khanna to get publicity.

“That was clearly a media op,” Portnoy said. “And he’s saying he’s running for president or whatever. But it is a heated area to say the least, a violent area, and to think that there’s not gonna be checks… the whole thing is crazy!”

Their takes come after Khanna made his accusation he was detained by Israelis on July 11. Khanna whined he felt “powerless”in the situation, and then he went on a full-blown media blitz to complain about it some more.

He did interviews with Meet the Press, Drop Site News, NewsNation, Fox News, and progressive pundits Hasan Piker andJoy Reid, among others.

Khanna was 7,400 miles away from his Northern California district when he visited Israel. And beyond Carolla and Portnoy, others have cast doubt on Khanna’s claim that he was detained.

As Mediaite’s Alex Griffing wrote about it in an oped:

The only issue, at no point does the video show the IDF or the Israeli settlers detaining Khanna or anyone he is with – including progressive activist and failed congressional candidate Cameron Kasky.Settlers are clearly blocking the road ahead of Khanna’s minibus, and the video evidence does not dispute (or verify) his claims that the settlers kicked his tires and cursed him. But the video, which Khanna points to as the main evidence of his detention, certainly shows no such thing.

Khanna wasn’t the only Democrat Carolla and Portnoy made fun of during their podcast interview, either. Both guys went off on democratic socialists like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D), with Portnoy saying most democratic socialists seem to be spoiled, rich kids.

Man fleeing immigration officers in Florida is struck and killed by tractor trailer, police say

A man running from an encounter with immigration and other federal agents in Florida was struck and killed by a tractor trailer on Tuesday, authorities said.

It was the third death in a week involving encounters with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, following shootings in Texas and Maine

The 28-year-old was among four occupants of a vehicle that stopped in the parking lot of a gas station and convenience store in the St. Augustine area before 7 a.m.During an encounter with agents from ICE and Homeland Security Investigations, the four fled on foot, with one darting across a busy road into the path of the semi, Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan said in an emailed statement.

The driver of the semi stopped and tried to help the man, Bryan said.

It was at least the 10th death involving encounters with immigration agents since President Donald Trump launched his mass deportation campaign last year.

It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted the encounter Tuesday. In an emailed statement, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed it had conducted an operation and said the Florida Highway Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations were “investigating an incident resulting in the death of a Mexican national.”

The department did not respond to an inquiry from The Associated Press about the status of the other three occupants of the vehicle.

State Rep. Angie Nixon, a Democrat from Jacksonville, called the death a tragedy that resulted from an out-of-control agency.

Whether it’s ICE agents gunning down a father in the streets of Houston, shooting a young man in Maine or conducting operations right here in Northeast Florida that result in a deadly crash, the outcome is the same: fear, chaos and death,” she said.

In two other cases, people died after fleeing agents and being struck by vehicles.

Last summer, a man running from immigration officers outside a Home Depot store in southern California died after being as he tried to cross a freeway.Homeland Security officials said that 52-year-old Roberto Carlos Montoya Valdez, of Guatemala, was not being pursued by immigration authorities when he was struck.

In October, a pickup truck fatally struck 24-year-old gardener , of Honduras, on a highway in Norfolk, Virginia,as he tried to escape authorities during a traffic stop. Authorities said Castro Rivera’s vehicle was stopped as part of a “targeted, intelligence-based” operation and that Castro Rivera had “resisted heavily and fled.”

The Mexican government on Tuesday said it had in the U.S. to review the deaths of or during raids for possible criminal prosecution.

Democrats are more interested in illegal aliens driving massive trucks that they have no training or licenses to do the job. They never are concerned for American citizens are endangered by them, because they speak no English and have NO training.

The big question is why Trucking companies hiring illegals? They have to pay US licensed truckers have all their regulations and the trucking companies have to pay more. RAID all the trucking companies doing this!

How Can Benson Stand Up to Big Tech When She Takes Their Money?

The Democrat candidate for governor denied taking money from DTE but campaign finance filings show an exec has donated

By Anna Hoffman · July 14, 2026

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson—who is supervising her own election for governor—is coming under scrutiny again for dodging questions about her husband’s involvement in bringing a massive data center to Saline.

In an interview with Michigan Climate Action Network last week, an audience member asked Benson about data centers and she responded:

“Here’s what we do in Michigan: We put guardrails in place to ensure greedy corporations cannot come to Michigan and take advantage of our air and our water.”

Certainly that means she’s not taking money from those same “greedy corporations,” right?

Another audience member asked her if she would take money from DTE. Benson said: “I will not, and I have not.”

Her own campaign finance records tell a different story.

Benson has already accepted money from at least one DTE executive: Andrew Coulouris, vice president of corporate and government Affairs.

Our previously reported analysis of Benson’s Legacy PACshows Benson receiving thousands of dollars from Silicon Valley tech executives, including a $1 million investment from Arista’s CEO Kenneth Duda, among others.

We also reviewed “Jocelyn Benson for Governor” campaign finance reports, downloaded by Michigan Enjoyer to include every donor over $1,000.

Notable donors include:

Oracle’s Executive Vice President Evan Goldberg. Oracle, alongside OpenAI and Related Companies, is developing the controversial Saline Township data center.

Google's Chief Scientist Jeff Dean, one of the world's most influential AI researchers; Suzanne Frey, Vice President and “steward of information” at Google Cloud; Borderless AI Advisor (listed as a “Google Advisor”) Beth Steinberg; and “grantmaker” Kathy Kwan, wife of early Google Engineering Leader Alan Eustace and president of the Eustace-Kwan Family Foundation. Google is pursuing one of Michigan's largest proposed data center campuses in Van Buren Township.

Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn's co-founder, one of OpenAI's earliest financial backers, and an influential AI investor.

NVIDIA—the company powering the AI revolution. NVIDIA chips are the backbone of the vast majority of advanced AI systems operated by Google, Meta, OpenAI, Oracle, Microsoft, and Amazon. Benson's donor list includes co-founder Chris Malachowsky, security engineer Kyle Lady, and company attorney Mark Hoose.

The Midwesterner previously reported a February fundraiser at the home of Jeff and Lisa Blau, the CEO of Related Digital. New names and receipts will likely appear in the next campaign finance report.

Benson’s husband, Ryan Friedrichs, served as vice president of Related Digital, a Stephen Ross company. He advocated for the Saline Data Center. In a House Oversight Committee meeting, expert Christy Gillenwater estimated Friedrichs could make up to $70 million in commissions from the project.
