The biggest skywatching day of 2026 is coming. Here's what you'll see in North America and Europe

Sometimes weeks go by without anything notable happening in the sky. Then along comes something spectacular, like a total solar eclipse, the peak of a major meteor shower or a bright planet reaching a landmark moment in the evening sky.

On Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, all three occur almost simultaneously. As a bonus, if you are under a dark sky for the Perseids, the Milky Way's bright central regions will stretch across the southern sky by around midnight.

Exactly what you'll see of the eclipse depends on where you are on Earth.

From within a narrow 180-mile-wide path of totality across eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain, a total solar eclipse will briefly turn day into night for lucky locals and intrepid eclipse chasers.

Across the U.K., millions will see a partial eclipse of the sun, ranging from 90% to 95%. Across Europe and northwest Africa, an equally deeply eclipsed sun will peak at sunset, creating a truly strange sight.

Minutes later, brilliant Venus reaches dichotomy — appearing exactly half-lit in telescopes, while to the naked eye it blazes at magnitude -4.4 in the western twilight. A few hours later, the annual Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak.

Wherever you are, there will be something worth looking at. Here's exactly what will happen, where and when, depending on where you are (times are from Time and Date).

Iceland or Greenland: a total solar eclipse … and aurora?

If you've traveled to (or live in) western Iceland, or you're booked on an expedition cruise ship on Aug. 12, you're in for a treat. The point of maximum eclipse — 2 minutes 18 seconds — is off the coast of Iceland, accessible by ship, but likely not by many.

It's possible that expedition ships in the lower reaches of Scoresby Sund, Greenland, will experience the most totality, with 2 minutes 17 seconds possible at 4:36 p.m. WGST, with the eclipse 25 degrees above the west-southwest.

Here, the sun will set at 10:15 p.m., with the darkest time about 12:50 a.m. — there is no truly dark night, just all-night civil twilight. That makes the Perseids and aurora unlikely to be seen even if they're present. Ditto Venus — Greenland is too far north.

In Iceland, totality will begin between 5:43 and 5:50 p.m. GMT, depending on the exact location.

It will last longest in regions farthest west, with 2 minutes 13 seconds at Látrabjarg in the remote Westfjords (5:44 p.m.) and 2 minutes 10 seconds at the westernmost coast of Snæfellsnes Peninsula (5:45 p.m.).

The eclipse will be 25.5 degrees above the west-southwest. The sun will set at 9:53 p.m. in Reykjavík, with the darkest window from 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. (and the darkest time 1:30 a.m.).

That makes Perseids and aurora possible — though summer twilight often limits visibility. However, Venus will not be visible after sunset.

Spain: Totality, Venus and the Perseids

For anyone within Spain's path of totality, Aug. 12 promises to be one of the greatest days of skywatching imaginable.

The main event comes late in the day as the moon completely covers the sun. In parts of northern and eastern Spain, totality will occur with the sun hanging low above the western horizon, creating one of the most photogenic eclipse scenarios of the century.

In Spain, totality will begin between 8:26 and 8:33 p.m. CEST, depending on the exact location.

Its maximum duration in Spain will last longest in regions farthest northwest, with 1 minute 50 seconds at Playa de la Escaladina in Galicia (8:26 p.m.), where the eclipse will be 11 degrees above the west-northwest.

It will be at its shortest, at 1 minute 36 seconds, at Bellavista, Mallorca, one of the Balearic Islands (8:31 p.m.). The eclipse will be just a couple of degrees above the west-northwest.

The sun will set at 9:16 p.m. in Madrid, with a dark night from around midnight through 4:40 a.m. CEST. The darkest part of the night — and the point when the radiant point Perseus will be high above the horizon — will be around 02:00 a.m. CEST.

Unless there's a whopping solar storm (unlikely), concentrate on the Perseid meteor shower, rather than hoping for aurora.

Light pollution is irrelevant for a total solar eclipse, but if you've cross-referenced your eclipse-viewing sight with a Light Pollution Map, you'll be in Bortle 4 skies in rural Spain, ready for a potentially unforgettable Perseids (the solar eclipse means by definition that it's taking place at new moon, after all).

Under rural Spanish skies, particularly in dark-sky regions away from towns and cities, observers could see 30 to 50 meteors per hour, with occasional bursts producing even more.

It might be wise to have an afternoon nap before the eclipse — it could be a long, exciting night if skies are clear.

U.K: Deep eclipse, Venus and the Perseids

The path of totality misses Britain entirely, but Aug. 12 will still be a remarkable day. Across most of the U.K., more than 90% of the sun will be covered by the moon, with maximum eclipse shortly after 7 p.m. BST.

The sun will hang low above the west-northwest horizon as a narrowing crescent, so the best locations will be coastal viewpoints, hilltops and open landscapes with clear western horizons.

London, Manchester and Glasgow all experience about 91% coverage, while Cardiff reaches 93%. The deepest eclipse will be seen in the far southwest, with 96% coverage in the Isles of Scilly and almost 96% at Land's End in Cornwall.

Although it will not become as dark as during totality, observers may notice a subtle drop in temperature and a strange dimming of the landscape.

Shadows will soften, colors will become muted, and daylight will take on an unusual quality that many first-time eclipse watchers find surprising.

Once the eclipse ends, Venus becomes the next target. Look west after sunset for the dazzling Evening Star.

Venus is only days from its greatest elongation and near its best evening appearance of 2026, making it hard to miss. Even a small telescope will reveal its half-lit phase. The Perseids will then peak during the early hours of Aug. 13.

Western Europe: Eclipsed sunset, Venus and the Perseids

For millions of people across Western Europe, Aug. 12 offers a slightly different spectacle. Instead of totality or a partial eclipse in late afternoon, many locations will witness a deeply eclipsed sun setting below the horizon.

An eclipsed sunset is surprisingly rare, and particularly one this deep. In some places, more than 90% of the sun will be obscured as it approaches the horizon, creating a dramatic crescent-shaped sunset.

In places such as Corsica, the Ligurian coast, Venice, the Alps and parts of central Europe, photographers will have the chance to capture one of the most dramatic sunset eclipses visible anywhere this decade.

With Venus visible across Europe after sunset, as well as the Milky Way and the Perseids peak, Aug. 12 will effectively become an all-night astronomy festival across Europe.

North America: Partial eclipse, Venus and the Perseids

The total solar eclipse — and a deep partial eclipse — may belong to Europe, but North America gets its own small version of the event.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible from Alaska to New England, touching 26 U.S. states and every Canadian province.

While the eclipse is modest compared with North America's recent total eclipses, millions of people will still be able to participate in the global event.

The deepest U.S. eclipse occurs in Alaska, where Fairbanks will see about 37% of the sun covered and Anchorage almost 28% (8:21 a.m. AKDT).

In the Northeast, Maine gets the best view, with about 28% obscuration (1:50 p.m. EDT), while Boston sees 16% (1:55 p.m. EDT) and New York City about 10% (1:54 p.m. EDT). In Canada, the eclipse becomes considerably more impressive.

Iqaluit, Nunavut, will see 61% of the sun covered (1:24 p.m. EDT), while St. John's, Newfoundland, will experience more than half of the sun obscured (3:35 p.m. NDT).

Every Canadian province will see at least some part of the eclipse. Remember that eclipse glasses are still essential, even for small partial eclipses.

A leading Democratic senator has written to the boss of JP Morgan to request clarification on the bank’s contact with the child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Elizabeth Warren, the top Democrat on the senate banking committee, wrote to Jamie Dimon last week to ask if he took advice from Epstein while lobbying against a UK tax on banker bonuses, in a letter published by the committee on Monday.

“It is critical that Congress and the American public fully understand the extent of any interactions the bank and you had with Epstein,” the senator wrote.

Dimon, who has been chair and chief executive of the largest US bank for two decades, told a court in 2023 he had never met Epstein and had not heard the late sex offender’s name until his 2019 arrest.

Indiana senator’s bill would codify Trump’s birthright citizenship order

Indiana Republican Sen. Jim Banks on Monday introduced a billthat would codify President Trump’s Day 1 executive order reshaping the definition of birthright citizenship in the U.S.

The Citizenship Act of 2026 requires that any person who enters the U.S.“without authorization or for the purpose of engaging in birth tourism is considered an invader.”

Banks’s office said in a statement thatthe bill would find that “illegal immigration and birth tourism constitute an ongoing invasion and amends federal law to confirm that children born to illegal aliens and birth tourists are not entitled to automatic citizenship.”

“The Supreme Court’s birthright citizenship decision was an unprecedented assault on American sovereignty, and we must do whatever it takes to save our country,” Banks said in the statement.“I’m leading the Citizenship Act to reverse the effects of this consequential ruling and ensure the millions of illegal aliens that invaded our country can’t continue to exploit our immigration system.”

Banks told Fox News that the bill was inspired by Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s concurring opinion saying Trump’s order conflicted with federal birthright citizenship law passed by Congress in 1940.

Kavanaugh joined the 6-3 majority upholding birthright citizenship and ruling Trump’s order unconstitutional. The high court stated that such a change could only be ratified by a constitutional amendment.

Trump relented and urged members of Congress to take on the task of changing the law with a constitutional amendment.

Banks became the second Republican lawmaker seeking to codify Trump’s executive order. Last week, Rep. John McGuire III (R-Va.)introduced the Birthright Citizenship Clarification Act to codify the order and strike down the jus soli or “right of the soil” legal principle that grants citizenship to anyone born within a nation’s territory.

The Virginia lawmaker’s amendment would strike citizenship for those who are children of a mother with lawful temporary presence and a father without citizenship, as well as other less common situations, like children born on a foreign ship or children of foreign government officials.

Rep. Brian Babin (R-Texas) introduced his own bill to address birthright citizenship one day after Trump issued his executive order last year. The bill required children born in the U.S. to become a citizen if one parent was a citizen, a lawful permanent resident or an immigrant who legally entered the country and served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Trump made his birthright citizenship executive order one of his Day 1 policies upon retaking the White House.It would require a baby born on U.S. soil to have at least one parent with citizenship or permanent legal status to gain birthright citizenship.

Days after the high court’s ruling, Trump said he would have the justices rehear his case.

“I will be asking for a Rehearing by the United States Supreme Court, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This miscarriage of justice will destroy America if they don’t change their absolutely insane decision.”

'Found you!' Astronomers spot faintest exoplanet ever seen from Earth after a decade of hide-and-seek

"The new planet is 100 times fainter than Beta Pictoris b, the famous planet in the same system, making it the faintest exoplanet ever imaged directly from Earth."

It has taken over ten years, but astronomers have finally won a prolonged game of cosmic hide-and-seek with a planet hiding around the star Beta Pictoris.

The extrasolar planet, or exoplanet, is known as Beta Pictoris d. It is found 63 light-years away and has two planetary siblings, which were caught some time ago.

This new exoplanet is 100 times fainter than its sibling Beta Pictoris b, which was the first planet discovered in the system. That makes Beta Pictoris d the faintest exoplanet ever seen from Earth.

Like its previously discovered sibling, Beta Pictoris d is a gas giant. However, unlike Beta Pictoris b and Beta Pictoris c, it is much further away from its parent star and is thus much cooler than its siblings.

The newly discovered world is also smaller than the previously seen world around Beta Pictoris. While both Beta Pictoris b and Beta Pictoris c have around 10 times the mass of Jupiter each, Beta Pictoris d has only around 2.4 times the mass of the solar system's most massive world.

That makes it one of the lightest exoplanets ever directly imaged by a ground-based telescope.

"Planet d, it seems, has been playing a game of hide-and-seek with us for over a decade, and only now can we say ‘found you!’" team member Jayne Birkby an astronomer at the University of Oxford in the UK, said in a statement.

The discovery of Beta Pictoris d helps clear up a puzzle regarding a disk of dust and debris in this planetary system, which is theorized to be made of the leftovers of planet formation.

That is because this newly found world has exactly the right mass and location needed to explain both the odd shape of this debris disk and its location.

11 years of hide-and-seek

The team behind this discovery wasn't initially looking for a third planet around Beta Pictoris. Instead, they were simply attempting to learn more about the system's first planet.

"This was a serendipitous discovery," team co-leader Ben Sutlieff, an astronomer at the University of Edinburgh said. "We initially wanted to look more at a known planet in the system, Beta Pictoris b, to see how it changed over time."

That was until they spotted telltale signs of another planet around the same star. Delving back into 11 years of archival data, the team found the third planet lurking in various images.

To consider how impressive it is to directly image a planet outside the solar system, consider that of the over 6,000 worlds in NASA's exoplanet catalog, less than 100 were discovered using direct imaging.

Such detections are so tricky because they require picking out the thermal glow of a planet from the glare of its parent star.

Catching a direct image of an exoplanet as faint as Beta Pictoris d is a major step forward for this technique.

"The new planet is 100 times fainter than Beta Pictoris b, the famous planet in the same system, making it the faintest exoplanet ever imaged directly from Earth," team co-leader and European Southern Observatory researcher Markus Bonse said.

The discovery of Beta Pictoris d makes the Beta Pictoris system just the second in which more than two worlds have been directly imaged. The first was HR 8799, which is located around 133 light-years away.

"Systems with multiple directly imaged exoplanets are the 'holy grails' of discoveries, because they can teach us a lot about what different exoplanets are like in the same formation environment," Sutlieff said

Thus, the discovery of Beta Pictoris d via direct imaging should encourage further direct imaging of planetary systems which may also harbor faint planets.

This is an investigation that could be picked up by the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile

"Planets seem to have friends," team member Beth Biller, of the University of Edinburgh in the UK, said.

"Many of the famous directly imaged exoplanet systems seem to have multiple giant planets in the same system, and likely there are even more lower-mass planets hiding in these systems that might be revealed with instruments on the ELT."

The first lady, in rare public remarks, said eight children have been reunified in past 24 hours.

First lady Melania Trump said she has established an “open channel of communication” with Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent months, hoping to reunite children separated from their families during the war in Ukraine.

In one of her most substantive public remarks since her husband’s return to office, Trump said her representatives and Putin’s office have “participated in several backchannel meetings and calls, all in good faith,” about the welfare of children affected by the war.

“President Putin and I have had an open channel of communication regarding the welfare of children for the past three months,” Trump said, adding that both sides “agreed to cooperate with each other for the benefit of all people involved.”

Trump claimed that eight Ukrainian children have been reunited with their families in the past 24 hours as part of the initiative. Three of the children had been separated from their parents and displaced inside Russia due to front-line fighting, she said, while five others had been cut off from family members across borders since the early stages of the conflict.

The first lady said she had received documentation and photographs from Russian officials verifying the identities and conditions of the children involved, including a “verification report” prepared by the commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on human rights and the Russian presidential commissioner for children’s rights. The facts have been confirmed by the U.S. government, she said.

“This is an important initiative,” Trump said. “It is still on shared purpose and lasting impact. My ongoing mission is two-fold — to optimize a transparent, free-flow exchange of information surrounding all children who have fallen victim to this war and to facilitate the regular communication of children with their families until each individual returns home.”

Trump said the discussions also covered those who were minors when displaced but have since turned 18 and remain in Russia. She claimed that Moscow agreed to “rejoin” those individuals with their families “within a short period of time.”

The International Criminal Court last year issued an arrest warrant for Putin over the alleged unlawful deportation of children from occupied Ukrainian territories.

The first lady has largely stayed out of the spotlight since Donald Trump returned to office. The reunification of children initiative marks her most substantial public policy effort this year. She first relayed a letter to Putin after Donald Trump met with the Russian president in Anchorage, Alaska, in August.

“A simple yet profound concept, Mr. Putin, as I am sure you agree, is that each generation’s descendants begin their lives with a purity—an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology,” she wrote in the letter, telling Putin “it is time” for the Ukrainian children to return home.

Donald Trump has spoken to the impact that his wife has had on him in keeping abreast of Russia’s repeated missile attacks on Ukraine. The first lady has pointed out that Putin’s words haven’t matched his actions, the president told reporters in the Oval Office in July.

“There’s times I’d get home. I’d say, ‘first lady, I had the most wonderful talk with Vladimir. I think we’re finished.’ And then I’ll turn on the television, or she’ll say to me one time, ‘Wow, that’s strange because they just bombed a nursing home. I’d say, ‘What?’” Trump said at the time.

“A child’s soul knows no borders,” the first lady said in poignant remarks during her closely held announcement in the White House grand foyer, sharing heart-wrenching stories of kidnappings that had divided Ukrainian families for the better part of the more than three-year war.

The eight children were among thousands who were separated from their families during what the Kremlin called “evacuation” procedures in Ukraine — but were actually forced deportations.

Many were ripped away from their families or orphanages during the chaos of the first year of the war, when Russian forces occupied areas in eastern Ukraine.

Whole boarding schools were also emptied out and the kids loaded onto buses before disappearing without a trace.

WASHINGTON — First lady Melania Trump said Friday that she has been working with Russian President Vladimir Putin on reuniting Ukrainian children who were believed to be kidnapped into Russia during the war.

Speaking from the White House, she referred to a letter sent to Putin in August regarding children affected by the war, and said that he wrote back "signaling a willingness to engage with me directly."

“President Putin and I have had an open channel of communication regarding the welfare of these children," the first lady said. "For the past three months, both sides have participated in severalback-channel meetings and calls, all in good faith. My representative has been working directly with President Putin’s team to ensure the safe reunification of children with their families between Russia and Ukraine."

Trump said that in the last 24 hours, eight children were reunified with their families.

“Three were separated from their parents and displaced to the Russian Federation because of front-line fighting," she said. "The other five were separated from family members across borders because of the conflict, including one young girl who has now been reunited from Ukraine to Russia.”

She said that she has also raised concerns about Ukrainians who were minors at the time they were displaced during the conflict, but have since become adults while living in Russia. "Given the dangers of traversing this war-torn region, their safe return requires coordinated assistance," she said. "Accordingly, Russia has agreed to rejoin the individuals who have turned 18 within a short period of time. Again, this remains an ongoing effort. Plans are already underway to reunify more children in the immediate future."

NBC News reached out to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office for comment.

Russia has taken thousands of Ukrainian children since it invaded Ukraine and started the war in February 2022. Zelenskyy has brought the issue to the attention of Trump administration officials and President Donald Trump himself.

Zelenskyy estimated in June that more than 200,000 Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia or territories it controls since the war began more than three years ago. Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia’s children’s rights commissioner, has estimated that around700,000 children have been displaced since Russia's 2014 invasion of Crimea.

Research recently published by the Yale School of Public Health Humanitarian Research Lab said that Ukrainian children have been taken to more than 200 facilities across Russia, where they are given "re-education" courses focused on Russian patriotism or forced to participate in military training.

The first lady hasn't had as much of a public-facing role as in her husband's first term, and it's unusual for first ladies to get involved in foreign affairs. But when it comes to foreign policy, her spokesman Nicholas Clemens told NBC News: “The First Lady’s impact on her husband’s decision-making process is unparalleled. She possesses an unmatched level of influence compared to any adviser or cabinet member. Mrs. Trump can discreetly influence policy in a manner that is rarely observed by the public due to her singular position.”

Last month, she met with Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly after Trump had hand-delivered his wife's letter about children to Putin. A few days later, Zelenskyy brought a letter from his wife for Trump to deliver to Melania Trump, thanking her for writing to Putin.

Melania Trump and Zelenska discussed the plight of children affected by the war in Ukraine, after the American first lady launched an initiative focused on working with spouses of heads of state on the well-being of young people around the world, Zelenskyy said.

Melania Trump was “pleased” to meet with Zelenska, according to a spokesman for the first lady, and appreciates that “they have a shared vision — advancing the development of children.”

First Lady Melania Trump says Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to her letter of concern about the child victims of the Russia-Ukraine war.

She made the announcement on Friday, saying that after an "open channel of communication" with Putin, Ukranian children displaced in the war had been reunited with families.

The First Lady's "peace letter" was hand delivered to Putin during his Alaska visit in August.

President Donald Trump shared parts of the letter on social media. In it, the first lady pleads with Putin to protect children, writing that doing so "will do more than serve Russia alone" and "will serve humanity itself".

"Eight children have been rejoined with their families during the past 24 hours," Mrs Trump said, flanked by American flags behind a podium in the White House.

"Each child has lived in turmoil because of the war in Ukraine."

Of the eight children, the First Lady said three separated from their families were displaced to Russia because of front-line fighting.

Another young girl displaced by the conflict has now been returned from Ukraine to Russia, Mrs Trump says.

The children's reunification with their families was facilitated by both Ukraine and Russia, the First Lady said, adding that she was given a detailed report with photographs and the "identities and circumstances" of each child.

The US government "confirmed the facts", she said.

Mrs Trump said she has "learned a lot about this matter" since her letter was first handed to Putin. She said he responded in writing.

In her letter, the First Lady wrote: "Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart… They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger."

The announcement marks a positive development in her advocacy for children from the White House, which began during President Trump's first term.

She launched the BE BEST initiative in January 2021, which the White House describes as an awareness campaign focused around the well-being of children globally.

Earlier this year, the First Lady led an initiative for Congress to pass a bill banning revenge porn called the Take It Down Act. After the bill was signed, she said it was "a powerful statement that we stand united in protecting the dignity, privacy, and safety of our children".

According to the Ukrainian government, at least 19,500 Ukrainian children have been deported and forcibly displaced from their homes to Russia and Russian-occupied territories since February 2022.

Just 1,605 have come home so far, according to the government's Children of War database, external.

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Children's Rights Commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova, in 2023 for the alleged unlawful deportation of children.

Russia denies the accusation and says it has protected children by moving them from a war zone for their safety.

The first lady revealed that she and Russian President Vladimir Putin have had an “open channel” of communication since she wrote him a letter in August about the impact of the war in Ukraine on kids. She said the eight children were all returned to their families over the last 24 hours, with a commitment that the two sides will continue to work toward reunifying additional children displaced as part of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“This remains an ongoing effort,” Melania Trump said in a brief speech at the White House. “Plans are already underway to reunify more children in the immediate future. I hope peace will come soon. It can begin with our children.”

Heat Dome Broils the Western U.S.

It’s still relatively early in the summer season in the Northern Hemisphere, but several parts of North America were sweltering in mid-July.

The latest purveyor of heat was a strong ridge of high pressure that lingered in the upper atmosphere over the northern Rockies on the weekend of July 11-12, 2026.

This pushed hot air toward the surface and trapped it there—a weather phenomenon meteorologists call a heat dome.

Heat domes put the brakes on convection and suppress clouds and precipitation. This allows sunlight to reach Earth’s surface relatively unhindered and further elevate air temperatures.

As a result of the July heat dome, sites in Montana, Wyoming, and Utah broke all-time temperature records.

The map above shows air temperatures across the United States on July 12, 2026, at 2 p.m. Mountain Time, modeled at 2 meters (6.5 feet) above the ground.

It was produced by combining satellite observations with temperatures predicted by a version of the GEOS (Goddard Earth Observing System) model, which uses mathematical equations to represent physical processes in the atmosphere.

The darkest reds indicate areas where temperatures approached or exceeded 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit).

A preliminary analysis from the National Weather Service office in Billings found that temperature sensors at airports in Billings and Miles City, Montana (111°F and 115°F, respectively), and Sheridan, Wyoming (109°F), all recorded new all-time record highs on July 12.

Each of these stations topped its previous record by at least 2°F, with Miles City breaking its record by a full 4°F. The Montana records date to the 1930s; the Sheridan record begins in 1907.

Multiple locations in Utah broke all-time records as well, according to the National Weather Service office in Salt Lake City, including Deseret (111°F), Salt Lake City (109°F, or 4°F above the previous record), and Randolph (100°F, or 6°F above the previous record).

These stations in Utah have records that date back to the 1890s.

Extreme heat doesn’t just make people uncomfortable. It can have serious health consequences, particularly for older people. Extreme heat worsens common age-related health conditions such as heart, lung, and kidney disease.

Health tracking data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that the rate of heat-related emergency department visits in the Mountain states spiked tenfold during the July heat.

Heat waves like this one have become more frequent in the United States in recent decades, according to researchers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

Using a NASA modeling system called MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications-2), one NASA team found that summer heat waves in the U.S. roughly doubled in number between 1980 and 2023, increasing from an average of two to four per month.

Forecasters expect the heat dome to spread east into the Midwest, New England, and the Mid-Atlantic in the coming days, where triple-digit temperatures are likely in some areas.

The United States isn't alone in facing significant heat. Parts of both Western Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia are also facing heat waves.

(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday said federal immigration agents won't end vehicle stops, one day after officials announced a ‌temporary pause in such stops after agents fatally shot two men in ‌Texas and Maine.

"We must be strong, tough, and smart, and we CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.'s most ​important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!" Trump wrote in a social media post.

On Tuesday, Trump administration officials said the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency had ordered its officers to suspend most vehicle stops around the country after two men were ‌shot and killed by ICE ⁠agents during such stops six days apart.

An ICE agent on Monday killed a driver from Colombia in the coastal Maine town of ⁠Biddeford, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Portland. An ICE officer in Houston on July 7 fatally shot a Mexican national while trying to stop his vehicle.

"It's not a policy ​change, ​it's a temporary pause," Trump's border czar Tom ​Homan told Fox News Channel ‌in an interview on Tuesday referring to the vehicle stop suspension.

"This is going to be a short-term review to make sure ICE agents are safe and doing the right thing," Homan told the television network, adding that officers will use other options to make arrests.

The back-to-back shootings sparked protests in Maine, Houston and Boston and raised questions ‌over ICE agents' lack of body cameras.

The U.S. ​Department of Homeland Security, which overseesICE, has ​characterized both men as "illegal aliens" but ​acknowledged neither was the intended target of deportation operations that led ‌to their deaths.

Federal authorities have offered no ​evidence to support ​contentions that either man posed a threat to ICE agents or the public at large justifying the use of lethal force to stop them.

At least seven ​people have been shot dead ‌during federal immigration enforcement operations since January 2025, when Trump launched mass ​deportations after returning to office following campaign promises of an immigration crackdown.

NASA astronaut Anil Menon, along with Roscosmos cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina, arrived safely at the International Space Station Tuesday, bringing the orbiting laboratory’s crew to 10 for about the next two weeks.

The trio launched aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft at 10:47 a.m. EDT (7:47 p.m. local time) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. After a three-hour, two-orbit journey, the spacecraft docked at 1:52 p.m. with the station’s Prichal module.

Following hatch opening, expected about 4 p.m., the new arrivals will be welcomed by the space station Expedition 74 crew: NASA astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, and Chris Williams; ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Sophie Adenot; and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, Sergei Mikaev, and Andrey Fedyaev.

Bioprinting in Space Could Finally Allow the Synthesis of Complex Tissues

Does the revelation that microgravity is helpful for tissue growth also herald an Elysium-like future for healthcare?

Recently, the medical technology company Auxilium Biotechnologies announced that it conducted a test aboard NASA's SpaceX CRS-34 mission, attempting all-new forms of bioprinting in space.

It successfully printed samples of kidney, liver, and cartilage cells, along with several neural implants, demonstrating the real potential of microgravity in orbit to advance medicine.

Bioprinting full tissues has long been a holy grail for medical science, and while just about any individual cell type is easy enough to grow, producing finished tissues from those cells has always proved difficult due to the specific three-dimensional structure that defines them.

Pair that with the fact that they are often made up of multiple cell types laced together in complex ways, and you have a very difficult problem to solve.

So, in 2024, Auxilium sent its 3D bioprinter up to the International Space Station to conduct experiments in an environment where "down" goes out the window.

It's an unintuitive approach, since regular human bodies form on the surface of the Earth, not in free fall; it was entirely possible that human developmental processes would not work in space at all.

However, human biology is highly adaptable to space, and this seems to hold true all the way down to the cellular level.

It turns out that cells can grow and adhere to one another quite well in orbit, and the ability to work with weightless samples from any angle makes certain types of physical organization much easier to achieve.

The research began by printing biocompatible neural implants for surgical delivery and lacing them with specific drugs.

Gravity causes the distribution of the drug-containing particles to become uneven, causing them to sink to the bottom, so the implant will not be able to provide continuous access to the drug to all necessary nerves. Freefall fixes this problem.

There are some simple organs that can be grown on particular frameworks or substrates, like growing a bladder around a balloon.

There have also been attempts to build more complex three-dimensional scaffolds for growing things like hearts, but nothing implantable just yet.

In microgravity, the problem of three-dimensional organization becomes a lot easier to deal with.

After that, the team turned to growing the first-ever liver and kidney cells in space. We'll have to wait for more detailed results and follow-up studies, but the team is convinced that the technique can create real therapies in the future.

The problem is that genetic medical technologies and grown organs are already expensive, as are transplants, for that matter. If the cost of a space launch were between a patient and getting a new liver, only a very tiny fraction of people could afford it.

We could imagine a future Moon base helping with this, allowing doctors to digitally transmit a full-genome sequence to the Moon, where lab techs would synthesize the DNA (perhaps along with the mitochondrial genome!) and implant it into a "blank" stem cell.

From there, an organ could be delivered much more cheaply down to Earth. Still, that would only mildly alleviate the problem.

As mentioned up top, human biology functions under normal gravitational conditions; while working in space can certainly be useful for some people, the more fruitful approach overall is likely learning how to control biology on the ground.

German government to trim climate fund spending under budget plans

The German government plans to scale back a range of subsidy programmes financed through its Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF) over the coming years, the Finance Ministry said on Wednesday.

The fund finances measures to help Germany meet its climate goals. It supports programmes ranging from subsidies for heat pumps and electric vehicles to energy efficiency and industrial decarbonization.

The ministry said that, in principle, funding that has not yet been committed will be reduced by 30%, although no programmes will be halted altogether. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Cabinet still must approve the measures.

The KTF is financed mainly through revenues from Germany's national carbon pricing system and the European Union's Emissions Trading System. It will also receive €100 billion ($114 billion) over the coming years from Germany's €500 billion special infrastructure and climate neutrality fund, equivalent to €10 billion annually.

The government has already announced that subsidies for installing heat pumps and other climate-friendly heating systems will be reduced in the coming years, with greater means-testing of applicants.

Other planned cuts will affect programmes supporting climate-friendly transport, energy-efficient urban redevelopment, energy research, energy-efficiency advisory services and subsidies for low-emission commercial vehicles, buses and rail transport, according to Cabinet documents seen by dpa.

The government described the approach as an "intelligent lawnmower" strategy, referring to broad reductions across programmes.

The Finance Ministry noted that annual budget allocations for subsidy programmes are typically not fully spent within a single year.

Measures deemed strategically important, including a planned discounted industrial electricity price for energy-intensive companies, will be exempt from the cuts, and funding for measures to reduce energy costs will actually increase next year.

The ministry said the Climate and Transformation Fund must contribute to efforts to consolidate the federal budget as Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil seeks to close multibillion-euro funding gaps.

Under the government's draft 2027 budget, €2.7 billion in emissions trading revenue that would otherwise have flowed into the fund will instead be redirected to the core federal budget.

Environmental groups have accused Klingbeil of raiding the fund to plug budget shortfalls.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday condemned the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents involved in the fatal shooting of a Colombian national who allegedly tried to run them over — and the onetime “border czar” was swiftly given a fact check online.

“Joan Sebastian Guerrero should still be alive,” Harris wrote on X, referring to the 26-year-old man the Department of Homeland Security described as an “illegal alien” who “attempted to flee the scene” of an ICE operation in Maine on Monday.

“This is the second time in a week that ICE agents have killed someone who — by their own admission — was not the subject of their operation,” Harris continued. “Now Sebastian is dead, his killing witnessed by his three-year-old daughter wearing her Bluey pajamas.”

“This cannot be acceptable in America.”

The failed former Democratic nominee for president called for an “immediate, independent, and transparent investigation” into Guerrero’s shooting death.

“Anyone responsible for wrongdoing must be held accountable,” she demanded.

Backlash to Harris’ post was immediate — with many pointing out that she served as the “border czar” under former President Joe Biden.

“I will start giving a f–k” about the illegals killed by ICE when Democrats start giving a f–k about Americans killed by illegals,” one user seethed.

ICE officers in Biddeford, Maine, had been surveilling the last known address of an illegal migrant with a deportation order on Monday morning when the chaos unfolded, according to DHS.

Guerrero apparently fled the home in a vehicle and refused to stop for federal officers, who gave chase, according to DHS.

“The vehicle attempted to flee the scene and, fearing for public safety, an officer discharged his weapon,” DHS said in a statement. “The driver of the vehicle was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted. He passed away from his injuries.”
