The infrastructural origins of the French Revolution

History Studies

Thanks to new data, two young researchers reveal a paradox: the infrastructures developed by the monarchy to better govern France also prepared the conditions for its fall.

The French monarchy's downfall was not due to a sudden awakening of the people, but rather the result of decades of resistance and learning from the state's repression. The monarch's efforts to expand its infrastructure, including the postal network, created conditions that led to exasperation and resistance among the population.

The construction of the state and the preservation of social order are not mutually exclusive projects, but rather they can have a complex relationship. The expansion of the postal network, which improved communication and efficiency, also created conditions for disorder and resistance, as it made the state more visible and intrusive in local life.

The expansion of the state's infrastructure, such as the network of horse-drawn post relays, contributed to the growing tensions and eventual overthrow of the government. This infrastructure, while increasing the state's control over the population, also disrupted the daily lives of the inhabitants and fueled deeper grievances.

The construction of the state and the construction of social order are not one and the same project, and the modernization of the monarchy disrupted the existing social order, leading to a surge in local rebellions. The expansion of the post relay network, in particular, was associated with a significant increase in rebellions, with more than 60% of these rebellions targeting the authority of the state, often due to grievances related to taxation.
