When John F. Kennedy Jr.’s Piper Saratoga crashed off Martha’s Vineyard in July 1999, the Navy again deployed a salvage ship—the USS/USNS Grasp (ARS‑51)—to locate and recover the fuselage and the bodies, working with ROVs and hard‑hat divers.
Navy history records show that USNS Grapple (T‑ARS‑53) also conducted search and recovery efforts at the JFK Jr. crash site between July 18–27, 1999.

A Boeing 737 crashed into a residential area near Patna, India, during approach, killing around 60 people (most on board, plus several on the ground); only a handful survived.
TAM Airlines Flight 3054 – July 17, 2007
An Airbus A320 overran the runway at São Paulo’s Congonhas Airport, crashed into a nearby building and gas station, and exploded, killing all 187 people on board and 12 on the ground—still the deadliest aviation accident in South America and the deadliest A320 crash.
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 – July 17, 2014
The Boeing 777 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people; international investigations concluded it was hit by a Russian‑made surface‑to‑air missile launched from separatist‑controlled territory.
