A few things are true: VA disability is rife with bullshitters. There’s almost nothing that can be done about it. Not necessarily for the reason you think either. At the same time, reform for the process is absolutely necessary or the VA will bankrupt itself.

Sorry to say, but the door needs to be shut on future claims.

It took me 10 years to file with the VA.

They tell you, or at least they did when I was in, to file immediately, as soon as you know you’re ending active service (so, like 3-9 months out). Looking back, the reason why was obvious: The VA is a bureaucratic mess. Better to get it done on the government dime than to wait until it’s your time that’s getting wasted.

At the time, welfare avoidance was reflexive to me. That’s how I viewed it. That’s how I view almost any government benefit. It’s just welfare and I don’t need welfare.

I also didn’t want it on the books that I had things wrong with me. I did and still do. I enlisted and deployed at the height of the insurgency in Iraq. I was not a grunt, don’t get me wrong, but these wheels still have some rough mileage on them.

My view of “VA disability” has since evolved a bit. Firstly: If you were injured during service and will need medical aid in the future, particularly when you are elderly, you owe it to your loved ones to get those things officially recognized with the veteran medical infrastructure.

Secondly: If your injuries, both physical and mental, are permanent and act as obstacles to your professional advancement that others who did not serve, yet nevertheless benefitted from your sacrifice, do not have, then you deserve modest compensatory recompense. Permanently if necessary.

I don’t think that’s even remotely a stretch.

Now, all that said, the VA disability system is rife with abject bullshitters and frauds.

VA Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned in disgrace in 2014. The 2010s were the absolute pinnacle of hate for the agency. Veterans were dying in VA parking lots waiting for proper service. Some were going into a VA office to file appeals, running into brick walls of bureaucracy, walking back outside and shooting themselves.

The whole issue was the endless waiting. Delay of essential medical and, importantly, psychological services was at a peak in 2013. More than 600,000 veterans were on a disability waitlist. They had filed and had not been scheduled for screening in at least >125 days.

The agency was caught completely off guard by the most predictable influx of broken veterans with legitimate claims.

After six years of expansive ground war, claims started to skyrocket right around the 2008-2010 time period.

Since Shinseki’s resignation, those wait times have improved drastically. There are now fewer than 100,000 veterans waiting past the 125 window for disability screening. It’s been an absolute sea change, but to what effect?

In 2019, we had finally gotten to the point where we could buy a home, but we needed a VA loan to do it.

My wife’s ~$75,000 in college debt had been paid off. We’d both been promoted professionally and had made significant salary steps. It was time.

There was just one problem: The VA loans had a “funding fee.”

It wasn’t much, I think maybe 2%. But two points on hundreds of thousands of dollars adds up. It would be a five figure cost. The only way to avoid it: If you have even 1% disability rating, the fee is waived.

My wife was clear: Get that can of yours down to the VA.

So I did. First I asked some friends who had filed recently what the process was like. Gist was it was worse than the DMV, buuuuuut … they’d fast track everything.

“If you went to Iraq or deployed at all, they just rubber stamp it,” a close friend told me. “70%.”

70?! Lol, okay.

Navigating the process took me about a month. I still had all my old documentation. I had persistent tendon issues in my elbows, issues in my shoulders, both knees, recurring stress fractures in my feet. Also some back stuff. I’d even had at least one corrective surgery so I could deploy. I blew some guts through my abdominal wall doing one thing or another. Rounding it out, I had the hearing of a man at least 20 years older than me, particularly hearing the human voice in a busy room. Unless someone screamed in my face, I plum could not make out words.

It also took me a long time to admit I had some level of post traumatic stress. It wasn’t the fighting. I hadn’t seen nearly as much as some of my friends. Also what fighting I did see I enjoyed, but that’s another issue entirely.

I did frequently dream of the dead, though, afterward for a long time. I was also anxious almost all the time. I semi-frequently imagined myself dying in various ways. I’d lose track of time and then realize I’d zoned out and been thinking of ways I could die in a given day. These usually occurred most often during high stress periods of my life. I didn’t think this was abnormal, but they still considered it “suicidal ideation.”

None of this, from the bones and muscles to the brain to the mentality, seemed all that crazy to me.

So I gathered all my documents from every time I went to military medical and hauled them to every appointment the VA set for me. I went to the ear doctor. I did shoulder and knee stuff. The whole gamut. It took weeks and dozens of hours.

Last stop was psyche screening. I was fine, basically, I said, except I hated crowded, loud rooms and would often become socially paralytic. Early on, when I first got out, if I was drinking in this kind of situation, I’d often suddenly get violent. Pick a mark, a face I didn’t like, and bust him in the mouth.

Did it have an effect on me professionally? Folks, I work in communications. Of course it did.

Also, I’d zone out here and there and picture myself dying. Big woop, amirite! Wrong. The psyche was disturbed. She told me to get on SSRIs (LOL, nah) and go to group therapy (sorry, I’d rather cut down trees with the boys).

Weeks went by and I got my screening back. Every claim, down the whole list, denied denied denied denied. Paperwork. Demonstrated issues. Denied.

Then PTSD: 70.

I could tell you I still had no idea it paid, but you probably wouldn’t believe me. Regardless, it’s true. I had no idea disability generated automatic checks from the DoD — I just thought it would be socialized medicine and, most importantly for me, a waived VA Loan “funding fee.”

But checks showed up one day and I was shocked. This can’t be correct.

My wife, who is just as much a Republican as I am, considered it workers’ comp. It was compensation, a pension, for a sacrifice I made that others hadn’t and had nonetheless benefitted from.

Perhaps that’s true. At least, there are folks I served with who are indelibly f*cked up and they deserve compensation. Yes, forever, until death.

The problem is the way the VA went from 600,000 to 100,000 on the waitlist. The rubber stamp worked for guys who’d done two, three, four, sometimes as high as 10 deployments.

That’s not what we’re seeing today, though.

The issue has become more pronounced in recent years because of center-right personal finance podcaster Caleb Hammer.

He has dozens, probably hundreds of clips at this point.

He once talked to two veterans, one who apparently never left the states, and one who flew into an Arab base, worked, and flew out. They were both at 100% and receiving around $10,000 a month. He had one guy who was a cook receiving $4,000 a month for hearing loss. The guy wanted $8,000 and was working toward that goal, Hammer later said. Another guy studied cyber security as a civilian and seems to have spent most of his time on base. He said he had disability to the tune of $4k a month.

That’s all … eye popping. I deployed three times and spent significant time outside the wire. I’m not even close to that. I’m sure I have friends who did 4x what I did who are not even close to that.

Along with Hammer, you now have allegedly rape-tastic Graham Platner. He has a 100% rating. He was infantry. He might deserve it, who knows, I haven’t really looked into his case (not sure I legally even can, given privacy laws).

Not exactly the poster child you want for VA disability.

The general consensus is VA disability will not get cut because it’s a third rail. Nobody wants to cut benefits for veterans.

That’s an issue, but it’s not the real issue.

The real issue is that unfucking the ratings of 19 million veterans is a massive clusterfuck. It’s an administrative and bureaucratic nightmare. I’m not a mathematician or a risk analyst, but you don’t need to be one to know that over/under on the cost of doing that versus just paying out the benefits is an easy hedge to make.

You just pay out what you’ve already promised and avoid the cost of rerating everyone plus dealing with the wave of legal challenges.

But you don’t move on that easily.

The rubberstamp that worked for actually damaged veterans caught in the forever waiting loop is now getting abused. There are dozens of companies out there offering services to veterans and guaranteeing 100% rating. The yearly cost is over $200 billion and skyrocketing. That’s insane. It’s unsustainable.

As usual, a system devised for people who genuinely deserve help is getting abused by a vast swath of liars, cheats and fraudsters.

The VA needs to close the door. Now. It’s shameful. We need to return to doing it the hard way and actually rating veterans fairly and comprehensively.

Otherwise, the whole system will implode. It’ll take some of my closest friends with it.

I have have a prototype that brings a solution that is virtually tamper proof and gives a receipt of your ballot that you own. Not even paper ballots can do that. Matter of fact, no solution in the world does that. If you do not comprehend what this is doing, then ask questions. Essentially this video creates a ballot with two candidates, think of it as a form on a webpage on a website. The form can only be created by someone with the proper credentials and writes the code of the webpage with the embedded form. You can host it on any secure site, preferably state or federal website. Once a user fills out the form, it does not save the webpage nor the form data of your information as simple text that has to be reposted with separate fields in a database for each entry, instead it encrypts and hashes the data only and returns the private encrypted hash to the user. Think the opposite of what any current election system does, where one server holds a private key containing millions of votes. If that server was ever compromised by any means, you get access to millions of votes. Instead the user gets the private key as if they are the security authority, and that data when sent back to the authorized webpage takes that encrypted hash and fills out the form returning the users original ballot that can be changed, depending on policies that are created for that webpage. You could have policies that allow a user to change their vote every hour, which would technically function as a recall system, or every four years, but when a change occurs a secondary application that counts would detect the change and display the new results where in an hour or every 4 years. In reality, it is not a webpage but a web application that dynamically creates a singular ballot form as only one source of truth. You only need one counter and ballot application to handle one billion votes per day on a proper machine or cluster. In reality, to get even more technical, it is a function as a service. We are not creating a web form every time someone access the site, we are calling a single function for a ballot cast, a return ballot, or a counting service. Low overhead, one source of truth in every case. If a user left their computer unlocked at a Starbucks and someone accessed that encrypted private key hash and changed their vote, it could only affect 1 vote out of millions, which is negligible, compared to one compromised election server that has millions of votes on it. Hope that make things clear, I swapped a monolithic security model and placed enterprise security into the hands of every voter, and that is they way it should be.

NASA Study Finds Near-Earth Asteroid Is Actually Comet

New research led by scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California has revealed the identity of a puzzling near-Earth object by precisely tracking its motion through space and using powerful observatories that image faint celestial objects.

This object has a dual personality: Past images hadn’t revealed obvious cometlike activity, suggesting it might be an asteroid, but its motion recently proved to be irregular like that of a comet.

The scientists detailed their findings in a study published in the journal Nature Astronomy.

The puzzle began on Aug. 28, 2025, when the object, provisionally known as the asteroid 1998 SH2, passed safely within 2 million miles (3 million kilometers) of our planet during its 4½-year orbit around the Sun.

Researchers looking to observe 1998 SH2 with NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN) planetary radar system had calculated its position using data from previous orbits and factored in the effects that the gravity of the Sun and planets would have on its path.

But when 1998 SH2 didn’t show up where they expected, they realized that something unanticipated had been influencing the object’s motion.

Object tracking

By using optical astrometry to precisely measure the object’s position in the sky, the researchers were able to identify the cause.

“After we measured the nongravitational perturbations affecting the motion of 1998 SH2 and recognized they weren’t compatible with the object being an asteroid, we suspected the object could be an active comet,” said Davide Farnocchia, a navigation engineer with NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at JPL and study lead.

Although 1998 SH2’s orbit around the Sun had been well-tracked from 1998 to 2016, the object had completed two solar orbits without additional observations by telescopes until the 2025 DSN attempts.

Analyzing all observations collected since the object’s discovery in 1998, researchers determined the perturbations to 1998 SH2’s motion and hypothesized that the object may be generating a small thrust by venting gas into space, causing it to deviate from its predicted path.

This venting results from the Sun heating ice mixed with rocky material, turning the ice into a gas. With regular comets, this activity forms a trademark bright tail and coma — the gas and dust surrounding a comet’s nucleus.

But when an object produces gas and dust in much smaller quantities, its tail and coma may not be detectable to most observatories.

The August 2025 close approach to Earth of 1998 SH2 provided the perfect opportunity for the paper’s authors to gather observational evidence of visible cometary activity.

They reached out to astronomers at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, a 3.6-meter (12-foot) optical/infrared telescope near the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, and the 1.5-meter (5-foot) European Southern Observatory’s Danish Telescope in La Silla, Chile, to observe. Astronomers at the powerful European Southern Observatory’s 8.2-meter (27-foot) Very Large Telescope on the Chilean mountain Cerro Paranal also tracked the object.

“The images we collected from these observatories showed a weak but clear tail, thus confirming that 1998 SH2 is, in fact, a comet,” said Olivier Hainaut, an astronomer with the European Southern Observatory and coauthor of the study.

“That’s how science works — you form a hypothesis, and you set out to test it. This data is exactly what was needed to confirm our hypothesis that 1998 SH2 was a comet.”

As an outcome of the investigation, 1998 SH2 will receive an additional comet provisional designation, P/1998 SH2.

Planetary defense implications

The research also sheds light on another, even more unusual, class of objects called dark comets.

Like 1998 SH2, dark comets exhibit significant irregularities, or perturbations, in their trajectory but lack other visible evidence of comet activity — there’s no coma, tail, or visible outgassing.

These enigmatic objects fall into two distinct populations: larger ones with orbits similar to those of Jupiter-family comets (short period comets with highly elliptical, or eccentric, orbits), and smaller ones that orbit closer to the Sun.

Since the 2016 discovery of the first dark comet, about a dozen more have been identified.

The paper’s authors suggest that many of the larger dark comets, which have orbits like 1998 SH2’s, could turn out to be regular comets if astronomers get the right opportunity to observe them with powerful telescopes capable of imaging incredibly faint objects.

And by analyzing the motion of all near-Earth objects using precision astrometry data, researchers may reveal more comets that were previously designated as asteroids if they exhibit cometlike nongravitational perturbations.

“This work shows the importance of continuously tracking near-Earth objects,” said Farnocchia. “Because of outgassing, the motion of comets is more significantly perturbed than that of asteroids.

Detecting these perturbations can be an important diagnostic tool for planetary defense that will help understand which objects may be comets rather than asteroids, how their orbits evolve, and how that influences their Earth impact risks.”

Hunting for near-Earth objects

NASA’s upcoming Near-Earth Object (NEO) Surveyor will collect data that can be used to support this effort.

The first space survey telescope to be built for planetary defense, this next-generation mission will seek out some of the hardest-to-find near-Earth objects, such as dark asteroids and comets that don’t reflect much visible light.

NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies, the Goldstone Solar System Radar Group, and NEO Surveyor all are managed by JPL and supported by the agency’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office in Washington.

Caltech in Pasadena manages JPL for NASA. The DSN receives programmatic oversight from the SCaN (Space Communications and Navigation) program office, also at NASA headquarters.

On 10 April 2010, a Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft operating Polish Air Force Flight 101 crashed near the Russian city of Smolensk, killing all 96 people on board.

Among the victims were the president of Poland, Lech Kaczyński, and his wife, Maria; the former president of Poland-in-exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski; the chief of the Polish General Staff and other senior Polish military officers;

the president of the National Bank of Poland; Polish government officials; 18 members of the Polish parliament; senior members of the Polish clergy; and relatives of victims of the Katyn massacre.

The group was arriving from Warsaw to attend an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the massacre, which took place not far from Smolensk.

The aircraft descended far below the normal approach path until it struck trees, rolled, inverted and crashed into the ground, coming to rest in a wooded area a short distance from the runway.[2]

Both the Russian and Polish official investigations found no technical faults with the aircraft, and concluded that the crew failed to conduct the approach in a safe manner in the given weather conditions. The Polish authorities found serious deficiencies in the organization and training of the Air Force unit involved, which was subsequently disbanded. Several high-ranking members of the Polish military resigned following pressure from politicians and the media.

Various conspiracy theories have been circulated alleging that the plane had been deliberately brought down by the Russians in an act of political assassination, and that the 2011 investigations constituted a cover-up and that the Polish government of the time — primarily controlled by the Civic Platform party as opposed to Lech Kaczyński's Law and Justice party — was complicit in or aware of the plot, or at least aided in the efforts to cover it up.[3]

These conspiracy theories are regularly promoted by Law and Justice, particularly by party leader Jarosław Kaczyński (twin brother of Lech Kaczyński) and deputy party leader Antoni Macierewicz.[4][5][6][7]

Following Law and Justice's return to government, a new investigation was opened into the disaster, chaired by Macierewicz; its 2022 conclusion alleged a Russian plot.[8][9]

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

The Republic of Mauritius has officially joined the global coalition committed to responsible space exploration, becoming the newest signatory and seventh African country to join the Artemis Accords.

NASA’s Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson contributed video remarks for a signing ceremony on Friday, in the island nation’s city of Ébène.

“We are honored to welcome Mauritius to the Artemis Accords community and look forward to working together in the years ahead,” said Anderson.

“Together, we are creating the foundation for future exploration while ensuring that space remains peaceful, accessible, and beneficial for all. America will return to the Moon and ignite the Golden Age of exploration and discovery.

Mauritius’ Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research Navindsing Jugmohunsing signed the Artemis Accords on behalf of the country.

Teodoro Valente, President of the Italian Space Agency since 2023, was Full Professor of Materials Science and Technology at Sapienza University of Rome and a distinguished scholar in the fields of composite materials and nanotechnology.

Throughout his career, he held numerous prominent positions in academia and research, including President of the National Interuniversity Consortium of Materials Science and Technology, Director of the Institute for Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials of the Italian National Research Council, and various roles at the European Commission.

Professor Teodoro Valente left a unique mark on his presidency. Over the course of three years, he made a substantial contribution to establishing space as a strategic sector of the utmost importance for Italy.

In his role, and in line with national policies and government guidelines, he promoted joint efforts across the research and industrial communities, helping to fulfil Italy’s international ambitions and strengthen the leadership of both the Agency and the entire Italian space system.

A raucous, soon-to-be-sleepy, post-lunch crowd?! What an honor!

Thank you so very much, it is a privilege to be back here at the Global SPACE and Air Chiefs’ Conference (did I get that right…I think GloSpACC may have a better sound to it, right?) Worth considering, anyway…

Notwithstanding, it is truly an honor to be among this distinguished group of colleagues…and you should all know, this will be my last public speech as the U.S. Space Force’s Chief of Space Operations as I head into retirement next month.

I only hope that my content today can live up to the expectations of such a finale. So much has transpired in the last four years, I’ve struggled to really capture the right message for today as it’s difficult to focus and prioritize just the right issues for this diverse audience.

In my struggle to find coherence and substance, I received some inspiration from an unlikely source…the American poet, Robert Frost. I recently rediscovered one of his poems that got me thinking…

However, recognizing that this international audience might not be familiar with an old American poem, I hope you will indulge me for a bit of recitation. In 1915, Frost wrote:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference

This last line is what was most inspirational… “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by…And that has made all the difference.” Now in my youth I read that as sage advice that I should not be afraid to take the less traveled path.

Now I’m older, and what I mean is I’m more experienced. And when I reread the poem, I was struck by the irony. You see, the title of that famous poem is “The Road NOT Taken.”

The subject of the poem is the other path…not the one he took, the less traveled by path…the “Road NOT taken” was the other path.

The poem’s subject, at least as the title would indicate, is about the road most traveled, the one he decided against…now this confused me, so I read the poem again, and then I found the lines which say…“though as for that, the passing there had worn them really about the same.”

What?! Both paths are worn the same? So here again my age, I mean experience, kicked in…this poem is not about taking a less traveled path…it’s about decision making and being brave enough to make the decision and move forward when you are not sure exactly where that decision will lead you.

Over the last four years as we established the U.S. Space Force and worked tirelessly to meet the challenges of a contested space domain, I, and many others, have had to make countless decisions with imperfect information and uncertainty about precisely where those decisions might lead our Service.

What I wouldn’t give in those moments to be able to see two paths diverging and be faced with a simple choice of picking one to follow, but the strategic pathways that we need to navigate remain opaque to our best capabilities in forecasting.

The complexity of problem solving and proceduralizing a new service, while attempting to characterize modern warfare that is rapidly changing around us does not lend itself to simple path selection choices.

So, my thesis question today for this accomplished group of military leaders…Are we bold enough to make the decisions that need to be made?

Do we know which decisions must be made, right or wrong? Where is forward action more important than the path itself? On the other hand, is NOT making a decision a legitimate choice for us?
