‘These Are Not Aliens’: L.A. Marzulli’s Shocking Warning About UFO Disclosure

L.A. Marzulli is sounding the alarm over what could become one of the greatest spiritual deceptions of the last days.

During a recent appearance on Daystar, Marzulli discussed UFO disclosure, the Nephilim, fallen angels and what he calls an ongoing “seed war” stretching from Genesis to the present day.

“The whole thing is a seed war, which is still going on today,” Marzulli said.

His argument centers on Genesis 6, where the “sons of God” took human women as wives and produced the Nephilim.

Marzulli shares how these beings were the offspring of fallen angels and human women, and that their existence helps explain some of the darkest and most difficult passages in the Old Testament.

“The Nephilim [are] the offspring of fallen angels [and] human women,” he said.

Marzulli also connected the biblical flood to the corruption of humanity, arguing that Noah’s family was preserved because his bloodline had not been altered.

“It says in the Scripture that Noah was pure in all his generations,” he said. “It doesn’t mean he was sinless, but there’s no corruption of his DNA.”

He further suggested that the spirits of the Nephilim continued after the flood.

“The disembodied spirits of the Nephilim become the demons that wander the earth,” Marzulli said. “They’re not fallen angels. Demons and fallen angels [are] two completely different things.”

Marzulli also insisted that Christians should not dismiss the rapidly growing conversation surrounding UFOs and alleged nonhuman intelligence.

He pointed to military testimony, congressional hearings and government disclosures as evidence that the subject has moved far beyond fringe speculation.

“What does the church do with that?” he asked. “What do you [who are] watching do with that? Because that information is groundbreaking.”

Marzulli believes the phenomenon is not extraterrestrial at all. Instead, he sees it as part of a Luciferian deception designed to reshape humanity’s understanding of creation, God and salvation.

“These are not space aliens,” he said. “These are fallen angels.”

According to Marzulli, the final stage of this deception could come during a moment of worldwide fear and instability.

He believes these entities may present themselves as humanity’s creators, claiming they engineered human life, started the world’s religions and have now returned to lead civilization into a new age.

“They will say that they created all life on this planet,” he warned. “They genetically manipulated early man. They started the world’s religions [and] world civilizations. Now they’re back at this critical juncture to usher mankind into a golden age.”

Marzulli believes such a claim could become the catalyst for a one-world political and religious system.

“This is how you get a one-world government and a one-world religious system,” he said. “It is the great deception. Absolutely.”

Yet his message was not one of panic.

“Greater is He that is in me,” Marzulli said, emphasizing that Christians must walk in discernment rather than fear.

His final warning to the church was clear: believers must understand the times, know the enemy’s strategies and remain firmly rooted in Jesus Christ.

“We know our enemy,” he said. “We should know exactly what he’s up to.”

In an age of increasing deception, followers of Jesus cannot afford to be captivated by spectacular claims without first testing them against Scripture.

As Jesus Himself warned, the last days will be marked by powerful signs capable of deceiving many. More than ever, the church must remain anchored in biblical truth, discerning the times while fixing its eyes on the One who has already secured the ultimate victory.

The newspaper that broke the Roswell UFO story is shutting down

Southern New Mexico’s news desert is becoming bigger.

The 123-year-old Roswell Daily Record, owned by Publisher Barbara Beck and General Manager SaraLei Fajardo, announced today that it is ceasing operations and beginning “an orderly liquidation” of its assets to pay its bills and other obligations, according to a statement from the newspaper.

Ownership said it is pursuing a sale or another sustainable arrangement that could keep the Record operating, but offered no guarantees.

The newspaper traces its roots to a semiweekly founded in 1891 and began publishing daily in 1903, according to the Library of Congress.

It became nationally known for its July 1947 front page reporting the alleged recovery of a “flying saucer” near Roswell, a story that helped make the city a UFO tourism destination.

The newspaper said its circulation is fewer than 12,000. It cut to three print editions a week in November 2024 and, in October 2025, ended in-house printing, shifting production to The Santa Fe New Mexican, according to the Record’s own reporting.

The Paper. reached out to the Roswell Daily Record for comment but had not received a response as of press time. They have not announced a timeline for a possible sale.

Cardinal Robert W. McElroy explained in a recent interview that he removed a prominent exorcist from his archdiocese because his ministry had become too public, and not because of the exorcist's opinion that UFO phenomena are often demonic.

McElroy, who has served as archbishop of Washington since 2025, told Catholic News Service (CNS) in an interview published last week that his removal of Monsignor Stephen J. Rossetti on June 3 was not an attempt to comment on the nature of UFOs and so-called extraterrestrials. Rossetti is a psychologist, author and priest of the Diocese of Syracuse, New York, who had served as an exorcist in the Washington archdiocese for 19 years.

"It wasn't touching on the question of UFOs," McElroy said of Rossetti's removal. "My major objection is that I think the traditional role of an exorcist is a very private one. It's a sacred one."

Rossetti went viral on social media last month when he claimed that "probably many, if not most, UFO sightings are in fact demons," noting that evil spirits often deceitfully present themselves as extraterrestrials to lead humans astray.

Clarifying that his remarks were "not de fide," but his "personal belief," he also exhorted his listeners to avoid unhealthy interest in such topics by keeping their focus on Jesus Christ.

McElroy, who has faced scrutiny and criticism for his views on Catholic social teachings and handling of clerical sex abuse cases, removed Rossetti for "linking UFOs to demonic presence," according to a June 3 statement from the archdiocese.

The statement also said that Rossetti's remarks and the social media use of his organization, the St. Michael Center for Spiritual Renewal, "gravely undermine the Church's very precise teaching on the devil, demons and exorcism."

Rossetti's organization, which offers help to those suffering spiritual affliction, has more than 146,000 followers on YouTube.

When Rossetti was removed, he expressed sadness at the archbishop's decision, but submitted to his clerical authority.

"I ask forgiveness for any ways that I have not been faithful to the teachings of the Church's Magisterium, particularly in the cited video on 'aliens and the demonic,'" he said.

"I believe it is of the utmost importance to be obedient to the Church and I will continue to endeavor to subject all that I do and the Center to be thus obedient."

The move prompted backlash among many Catholics on social media, and the archdiocese ultimately deleted the announcement from X. Father Dan Reehil, an exorcist with the Diocese of Nashville, also questioned Rossetti's removal last month.

"That, to me, is very bizarre, because who's to say that couldn't happen?" Reehil said of Rossetti's assessment about UFOs. "You know, does that contradict our faith? Absolutely not. Demons have appeared in many ways, shapes and forms for millennia."

"So, I find it an odd reason to can somebody, given that [Rossetti] is a very outstanding theologian.

He's a wonderful person, he's an amazing priest. He's an excellent exorcist, and he's been serving God in his church for decades," he added.

Speaking with CNS, McElroy said he believes the role of an exorcist shouldn't be as public as Rossetti had become.

"I think the more traditional approach of an exorcist is a private, within-the-life-of-the-Church ministry to help individuals who are in crisis and seem to be demonically possessed," he said. "It shouldn't go beyond that for people who are doing exorcism."

Rossetti's views about the occult nature of UFOs and alleged aliens have been echoed by other Catholic clergy, including Father Chad Ripperger, who serves as an exorcist in the Archdiocese of Denver and has done several high-profile interviews on the topic in recent months.

Ripperger told podcaster Shawn Ryan earlier this year that supposed alien encounters often resemble traditional demonic possession, and that the entities often attempt to undermine the idea of salvation through Jesus Christ, despite apparently being bound by His authority.

He cited accounts of unpleasant abduction scenarios that abruptly cease when the individual cries out to Jesus.

Vice President JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, also said of extraterrestrials earlier this year: "I don't think they're aliens. I think they're demons anyway."

Europe cannot play a meaningful role in resolving the Ukraine conflict while trying to exclude Russia from the process, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said, calling the bloc’s position a “dead end.”

Peskov was responding to remarks by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who argued that any future “security guarantees”for Kiev should bedetermined by Ukraine and its Western backers without Russia’s participation.

“Such statements demonstrate that the position taken by the Europeans is a dead end.If they insist on it, they will have no role in the settlement process,” Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.

Merz made the comments at a ‘Coalition of the Willing’ summit in Paris on Monday, where he pledged that Germany and Ukraine’s otherWestern supporters would continue supplying military aid to Kiev after any future ceasefire.

The group brings together several EU nations, as well as the UK, Norway, Iceland, and Türkiye. It has been discussing post-conflict security arrangements for Ukraine,including proposals to deploy a multinational force, despite Russia’s repeated rejection of foreign troops near its borders.

At last week’s NATO summit in Ankara, member states agreed to provide Ukraine with more than €70 billion ($80 billion) in military assistance this year and next. Germany pledged the largest national contribution.

Germany has been the EU’s biggest supporter of Ukraine since the escalation of the conflict in February 2022, providing around €55.5 billion in military aid, according to government data. German media have also reported that Berlin will finance the purchase of 50,000 attack drones for the Ukrainian military.

The latest pledges come as Ukraine has intensified drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure and residential areas in recent months amid continued setbacks on the battlefield, launching several hundred UAVs a day on average. Moscow has also reported a growing number of FPV drone attacks,including AI-guided models, targeting passenger buses and private vehicles.

The Kremlin has repeatedly saidthat any lasting peace settlement must address the root causes of the conflict, including Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization,protection of Russian speakers, and recognition of the territorial realities on the ground.

Who was David Brat?

Many Americans have forgotten the name. We haven’t.

In 2014, David Brat, then a little-known economics professor, stunned the political world by defeating House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a Republican primary in Virginia. At the time, most observers viewed the upset as an isolated event - a local revolt against an established leader who had lost touch with his district. In retrospect, it was something much larger. David Brat’s victory was an early warning shot. It signaled that a powerful populist movement was building within the Republican Party, one fueled by frustration, distrust of institutions, anger toward political elites, and a conviction among many voters that neither party was listening to them. Two years later, that same current helped propel Donald Trump to the presidency and fundamentally reshape the Republican Party.

As we watched with dismay the results of the New York Democratic congressional primaries, the memory of David Brat came floating back.

What happened in New York may prove to be a similar moment for Democrats. For years, political analysts have treated populism as primarily a Republican phenomenon. That was always a mistake. Populism is not an ideology. It is a political force. It can emerge from the left or the right. It thrives whenever large numbers of citizens conclude that the people running the country’s major institutions no longer understand or care about their concerns.

Today, both parties are confronting their own versions of that phenomenon.

The populism that has transformed the Republican Party often channels its frustrations toward immigration, globalization, cultural change, and government dependency. The populism now emerging within parts of the Democratic coalition directs its anger toward concentrated wealth, large corporations, and what it sees as entrenched political and economic power. The targets differ. The emotions do not. At its core, populism reflects a broad loss of confidence in elites – political, economic, academic, media, and corporate. Millions of Americans increasingly believe that the institutions that once commanded public trust are no longer delivering results, no longer accountable, and no longer responsive.

That sentiment has been building for years. The financial crisis damaged confidence in Wall Street. Endless political gridlock damaged confidence in Washington. Social media accelerated distrust of traditional news organizations. Rising housing costs, student debt, stagnant wages, and growing economic inequality left many younger Americans questioning whether the system works for them at all. When confidence in institutions erodes, voters look elsewhere.

They become more willing to embrace candidates who promise disruption rather than stability, confrontation rather than compromise, and sweeping change rather than incremental reform.

As former members of Congress who represented New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District from opposite political parties, we find this trend deeply troubling. American democracy has historically depended on a broad center. Progress came not because one side achieved total victory, but because competing interests eventually found common ground. The system was designed to reward coalition-building and compromise. Today, compromise is increasingly viewed as weakness.

Moderation is often treated as betrayal. Political incentives now favor outrage over persuasion and ideological purity over practical governance. That dynamic is affecting both parties.

The Republican Party has already experienced a dramatic populist transformation.

The Democratic Party may now be entering a similar period of internal upheaval.

Whether that process ultimately reshapes Democratic politics as profoundly as Trump’s movement reshaped the GOP remains to be seen. But the signs are increasingly difficult to ignore.

What concerns us most is that the underlying forces driving these movements are not going away. Neither party has yet found a convincing answer to the frustrations that fuel populism. Economic insecurity remains widespread. Institutional trust remains low. Political polarization continues to deepen. Younger voters are increasingly skeptical of traditional leadership. Social media amplifies anger faster than solutions. These are not temporary conditions. They are structural challenges.

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett shared her experience of receiving threats against her life and being swatted during a hearing before a House Appropriations subcommittee on Tuesday.

Barrett said statistics about an increase in threats to Supreme Court justices “sound abstract, but being on the receiving end of them is not.”

The threats “have required my children to think about and see things that children should not have to see or think about.”

Barrett recalled walking into her house with a bulletproof vest given to her by her security detail following the leak of the court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. She said she put down the vest on a table and turned around to see her 12-year-old son standing in the doorway, curious about what the vest was and why she had it.

“I didn't know how to respond because maybe I lack imagination,” Barrett said. “But I didn't expect that performing this service was going to put me in the position of explaining to my children what a bulletproof vest was and why I had to wear one.”

The justice also pointed to recent reports that she had been the target of a swatting incident, when people falsely report gunshots to provoke law enforcement officials to respond.

“I was very, very grateful that I had Supreme Court police outside my home because they were able to stop and meet with and explain to the county police that it had been a false alarm and so the police did not actually attempt to enter our home,” she said.

Members of the Supreme Court have not testified before Congress since 2019. Barrett and Justice Elena Kagan’s appearances in both House and Senate hearings Tuesday are focused on requesting more funding for security, as threats and incidents of harassment and intimidation aimed at the judiciary have risen.

The justices are making their rare appearance after the Supreme Court wrapped up its latest term late last month with major decisions on birthright citizenship, transgender rights, executive authority, campaign finance rules and mail-in voting – all topics that may come up in lawmakers’ questioning, in addition to the security funds request.

Field McConnell has been arrested and charged with three felonies of an unknown nature.

Remember that THEY can and do indict ham sandwiches. Their entire system is built and predicated on the presumption that a “person” is guilty until proven innocent. And it is hard to prove innocence.

Remember who or what is taking this action — Broward County, Florida, one of the most evil and corrupt County Governments in the United States Municipal Government flock of corrupt State and County franchises.

Remember that Field McConnell is a retired Air Force Lt. Colonel in his seventies — Vietnam Era, and that these charges, whatever they are, are said to stems from things that happened in the 1970’s — Ollie North Era.

Remember that a lot of good men, especially pilots, got drawn into CIA and DIA and other plots hatched during the take down in Vietnam and Iran Contra and other illicit “Ops” and also remember that many of those men actually believed — and had reasonable cause to believe — that they were working for our actual government and in the “National Security Interest” when in fact they were being ordered and/or induced under conditions of deceit to commit crimes.

Remember then, too, that the very Agencies responsible for ensnaring these men into committing crimes in the first place, then hold those same crimes as blackmail over guys like Field. This could very well be that kind of hypocritical pay back scenario, where Field wouldn’t go along with their current agenda, so they pulled out ancient dirty laundry on him.

Remember that Field McConnell’s principal contribution to the world so far has been to expose the “Senior Executive Service” — the SES, the most powerful and venal part of the British Territorial Government in the US and elsewhere.

That makes for a lot of very powerful enemies.

Remember that Field McConnell’s anti-child trafficking efforts are in competition–at least in some people’s warped minds– with Craig Sawyer’s campaign against the same evil.

And finally, to make sense of this all, you have to know some basic history and Who’s Who.

At the Federal level there are two (2) “governments” employed as subcontractors — (1) British Territorial and (2) Roman Papist Municipal.

Both are ultimately controlled by the Pope, but one is indirectly controlled by the Queen and the other is controlled directly as part of the Roman Municipal Government system.

This results in two “Congresses” — staffed by the same people wearing different hats.

It also results in a multiplicity of services of all kinds. There are two or more departments, bureaus, and agencies covering (and charging for) every possible function of government.

There is the actual Department of Defense run by the British Territorial Government, and then, there’s “the DOD” run by the Municipal Government. And there are rivalries between these entities. Competitions. Snake Oil Sales. Separate contracts with various agencies — both foreign agencies and interagency contracts.

This makes for a very complex mix of organizational alliances and at the same time, competitions and oppositions, as all these various groups have somewhat the same and somewhat different motivations. Wherever there is money to be made, you will find two or more of these groups in the bidding, cutting deals in the back rooms, and trying to push each other off the playing field.

My initial “intel” on this subject as it concerns Field is that the snakes in Broward County who make a lot of money off of smuggling everything from child prostitutes and white slaves to drugs to tigers to booze, cut a “deal” with Craig Sawyer, one of Field’s competitors in the new burgeoning anti-trafficking movement, and that’s why Broward County is picking on Field.

Well, if you have two competing groups engaged in anti-child trafficking operations, and you are Broward County, you obviously want to buy them off. And if one of them will take the bait and the other one won’t, you obviously want to make the payola flow toward the group that will work with you and attack the group that won’t make a deal.

So the Smart Money is that Field and his group of anti-child trafficking heroes wouldn’t make a deal with Broward County (and behind them, the British SES involved in all this crap) to protect the Pedogate monsters, but Craig Sawyer would.

Or maybe Craig Sawyer was simply seen as the lesser of two evils and benefited from being less competent.

Or maybe this is just more of the Standard Operating Manual for the Scumbags among us, and the Deep State is attacking Field, and blaming Craig Sawyer for it, in an attempt to destroy both at once.

These things get complicated. You have to be able to play 3-D chess.

What is certain is that news channels associated with Craig Sawyer’s group are taking “credit” for Field’s arrest. But, that could be a set up, too.

After all, how many infiltrators have tried to set relationships with me, so that they could blackball me by association? Take nothing for granted.

This all gives rise to the spectacle of: (A) competition between two shadowy former-agency/former-military groups leading to harm of everyone’s efforts to stop child-trafficking; (B) dirty dealing with the dirty quasi-government officials ruling as kingpins in Broward County to allow trafficking to continue in exchange for a cut of the action; (C) petty personal conflicts leading some selfish and small-minded people to betray the best interests of all concerned; (D) agreements by some parties to protect Pedogate criminals in exchange for carte blanch to prosecute lesser criminals in Broward County; (E) some mixture of all of the above.

What I can tell you for sure is that any prosecution of Field McConnell for crimes committed back in the 1970’s is dirty prosecution by dirty people.

And, at the end of the Food Chain, they are high-ranking dirty people, too.

Many men, especially pilots, get into very sticky situations in the course of their professional work. The filthy Agencies that do the dirty work as subcontractors of the Departments of the swamp-dwelling foreign “federal government” subcontractors — are always in need of transportation for themselves, for their agents, and for various kinds of cargo.

Do Laser Produced Plasmas Explain Some of the UAP Orbs?

Today, I received an interesting message in response to my previous essay (posted here) on ball lightning being a real phenomenon that can be explained by oxidation of aerosol clouds composed of silicon-based nanoparticles during stormy weather. The email read:

With the team you have assembled, I’m confident that the scientific method will prevail over anecdotal evidence, personal beliefs, opinions, intuition, and non-quantifiable methods. You are our best hope for a factual understanding of the UFO/UAP phenomenon.

I very much enjoy your series of posts on Medium.com. Your latest comments on the nature of ball lighting and an association with some UAPs were refreshing and enlightening.

With your experience in the Strategic Defense Initiative, I’m sure you will consider the possibility of some UAP orbs being plasmoids, either naturally or artificially produced.

In fact, the U.S. military has researched and even patented much laser/plasma research to include a system of laser-induced plasma to act as deterrent targets for enemy missiles.

Indeed, my MSc thesis in 1985 was titled: “Analytical Models for the Evolution of Strong Shock Waves Generated by High Irradiance Lasers in Solids and Fast Spark Discharges in Gases”.

As a result, I am very familiar with the physics of laser produced plasmas. Today, related devices are being employed by the military.

Over the past decade, the Laser-Induced Plasma Effect (LIPE) program, run by the Pentagon’s Joint Non-lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD), uses short pulses from high-energy lasers to strip electrons off the atoms or molecules in air and create plasma balls (as reported here, here, here and here).

The system uses a highly synchronized, two-step laser system to generate the plasma balls. The first step employs a femtosecond laser which shoots a brief burst of light that lasts 10^{-15} seconds and creates a localized ball of plasma at a targeted point in space.

The second step uses another laser which strikes the newly formed plasma ball and rapidly heats it. By manipulating the second interaction, it is possible to force the plasma to vibrate and generate prescribed sound waves.

The LIPE system acts as a highly versatile, scalable tool designed to deter and control targets. The system can manipulate plasma vibrations to mimic human speech.

This allows operators to beam specific voice commands (such as: “Stop or we will be forced to fire”) directly next to a trespasser from kilometers away. LIPE can pulse near-continuous 155-decibel acoustic frequencies and flashing lights to disorient crowds.

The same laser system can also be adjusted to affect skin cells slightly under a target’s clothing, generating an intensely uncomfortable sensation of heat to force compliance without burning.

Since the sensory effects are only generated at the focal point where the two laser beams meet, friendly troops or bystanders standing in the beam’s path remain unaffected.

In addition, the Navy holds patents on laser-induced plasma filaments for counter-directed-energy applications.

These can be projected up to hundreds of meters and can emit any wavelength of light. They could be tuned to appear as balls glowing in infrared, ultraviolet, or visible light.

There is also a Navy patent specifically for creating a plasma-based array that induces a hypersonic apparent speed and can be steered to raster a three-dimensional target geometry.

This behavior resembles the erratic, high-speed “orb” behavior reported in footage of some Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP).

But UAP are a mixed bag. While some sightings may be explained this way, others cannot.

Erratic multi-directional movement with no visible propulsion and unusual persistence could be triggered by laser-produced plasmas, since their motion is not constrained by aerodynamics.

In particular, laser-produced plasma balls may explain Navy FLIR-recorded UAP footage, especially because the research organizations which are developing this military technology have close proximity to naval aviation testing ranges where famous UAP sightings occurred.

However, the earliest Navy UAP footage dates back to 2004, which would require far more mature laser-plasma projection capability than what is publicly documented even regarding today’s programs.

Moreover, current laser-induced plasma projection is documented to have a range of up to hundreds of meters, while many reported UAP orbs are described (via radar or visual triangulation) as tens of kilometers away — well beyond current publicly known projection range.

At the same time, it is important to keep in mind that Rafael recently developed the Iron Beam laser weapon against long-range ballistic missiles or drones that reaches a range of up to 10 kilometers (as reported here, here and here).

The director of the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) in the Pentagon, Dr. Jon Kosloski, wrote a letter dated June 5, 2026 (as reported here) which describes reports of orbs, including an orange “mother orb” launching smaller red orbs, remaining stationary for several hours, a duration and behavior that does not match a laser-sustained plasma, since maintaining ionization that long would require continuous, huge power delivery to a fixed point. For that reason, 40% of the reported cases in that dataset remain unexplained by any known human-made technology.

A laser-induced plasma in air, especially at the ball-lightning scale, would not necessarily produce the shock-heating fireball and sonic boom that is unavoidable for any object moving faster than sound through air.

In summary, directed-energy plasma projection is a credible candidate explanation for a subset of the reported UAP orb sightings, particularly those near military testing areas, involving erratic motion without propulsion signatures within a range of hundreds of meters to a few kilometers.

The use of classified or restricted-access military hardware would naturally trigger UAP reports by outside witnesses and even by other branches of government without a need-to-know.

But laser produced plasmas cannot explain the full range of UAP reports, particularly the AARO-catalogued cases involving multi-hour persistence, long-range radar tracking, or coordinated “mother orb” launching behavior, which would demand either an implausibly huge and sustained power source or a fundamentally different mechanism.

This is why the UAP Science Advisory Council (https://uapsac.com/) needs to do more research before it can properly explain the AARO orb dataset. Better data to be collected by new sensors, as listed here, is mandatory.

Some UAP may be laser-produced plasma balls, meteor-triggered plasmoids, shock-heated hypersonic bodies, conventional drones, and sensor artifacts. But others may be of more exotic origin. We need better data in order to separate the wheat from the chaff.

“It’s Torture, and People Are Scared”: Patients Describe Trauma of Involuntary Psychiatric Care

A Clinical Nursing Research study finds that patients view involuntary psychiatric treatment as clinically ineffective, nurses are divided, and both report low professional support and family involvement during detention.

A new article published in Clinical Nursing Research explores involuntary commitment and treatment from the perspectives of patients and nurses in Quebec, Canada.

The current work finds that while nurses’ opinions are split on the clinical effectiveness of psychiatric coercion, patients overwhelmingly view this process as ineffective. Nurses and patients generally agreed that professional support and family involvement during psychiatric detention were “low.”

This research, led by Pierre Pariseau-Legault from the Université du Québec, additionally finds four major themes in how psychiatric detention is perceived by the participants: psychiatry as a waiting room, nurses as subordinates, emphasis on psychiatric drugs as “care”, and refusal of psychiatric treatment as resisting undignifying “care.”

The results paint a picture of psychiatric detention as offering little support to patients while causing additional distress. The authors frame this kind of “care” as convenient for medical and judicial institutions, but not helpful for patients. They write:

“Care practices come to be limited to the application of coercive power delegated by the state, including the forced administration of medication. The distress potentially induced by involuntary commitment and treatments in patients comes to be ignored in favor of compliance with the legal procedures associated with these exceptional measures. Consequently, care practices appear to serve the interests of medical and judicial institutions rather than benefiting the patients themselves.”

It's dreaded by even the most frequent flyers: the seat belt sign constantly dinging, belongings sliding across the cabin floor and seats shuddering through rough air.

And if you've noticed flights getting bumpier over the past few years, the data suggests you're right.

New research by the University of Reading has found that instability-generating wind shear in the jet stream has soared by 15 per cent since 1979.

Similarly, severe clear-air turbulence (CAT) on busy flight routes has also risen by 55 per cent.

In fact, Delta Air Lines is being taken to court by a group of passengers after a severe turbulence incident on July 30, 2025 left 25 people injured.

Meanwhile, on an easyJet flight earlier this year, the pilot was forced to declare an emergency and return the aircraft to the UK after facing a bout of serious turbulence.

In another incident, ten people were injured on a Cathay Pacific flight from Brisbane to Hong Kong in May after turbulence hurtled passengers and cabin crew into the ceiling of the plane.

But what is causing this rapid rise in rough and choppy journeys?

Pilot reveals what turbulence looks like from the cockpit

Former airline captain Emma Hendersontells the Daily Mail: 'Whether we like it or not, the main reason is climate change.'

She explains how, as the atmosphere warms, jet streams can be strengthened in some regions due to differences in temperature between air masses.

'Stronger wind shear within and around the jet stream creates more clear-air turbulence, which is particularly challenging because it cannot be seen on weather radar,' the pilot, who is now a professional public speaker, explains.

Clear-air turbulence (CAT) is increasing 'most noticeably' at cruising altitude, but, she notes, 'not all turbulence is increasing'.

'We have also seen an increase in thunderstorm activity in the UK recently and that brings with it a risk of more turbulence too,' Ms Henderson adds.

Turbulence could 'potentially' become more common in the future as global warming continues.

'Climate models suggest that if global temperatures continue to rise, clear-air turbulence could become more frequent and more intense on some major flight routes, particularly across the North Atlantic and North America,' the captain explains.

But it doesn't mean you will have to prepare for a bumpy flight every time you jet off on holiday – the aviation industry is adapting.

From improved turbulence forecasting to electronic flight bags that display live turbulence information for pilots, there are many ways airlines are utilising technology to help make journeys smoother.

Ms Henderson, who has decades of flying experience under her belt, explains: 'Pilots today have much more information than we did even 15 years ago.'

Even simple changes like 'more proactive seat belt policies' and ensuring cabin crew are 'often being seated earlier when turbulence is expected' help to make flights smoother and safer.

How the pilot actually flies the plane can also affect how much impact the aircraft might experience.

Things like changing the altitude or even slightly altering the route can create a more pleasant journey.

'Sometimes climbing or descending just 2,000 feet finds much smoother air,' Ms Henderson says.

The former captain explains how pilots can also 'reduce speed to the aircraft’s turbulence penetration speed, which reduces structural loads and often makes the ride feel less abrupt.'

When it is possible to do so, simply flying around the turbulence is another solution.

Thunderstorms are normally avoided completely because they contain severe turbulence, hail, lightning and strong vertical air currents,' Ms Henderson says. 'Pilots will happily deviate many miles around them.'

CAT, however, is more difficult to avoid 'because you can't see it'.

There are several regions that can be particularly bad for turbulence, including the North Atlantic jet stream, the Himalayas and the Andes, according to Ms Henderson.

She says passengers shouldn't be concerned about the rise in turbulence, but warns people to be 'respectful'.

'The biggest risk from turbulence isn’t the aircraft. It’s people inside the cabin who aren’t restrained,' Ms Henderson emphasises.

She adds: 'Almost all serious turbulence injuries involve passengers or crew being thrown against the cabin because they weren’t strapped in.'

Modern planes are equipped to deal with stronger forces than typical turbulence, and pilots are as keen as passengers to avoid a bumpy ride.

Overall, the pilot insists that turbulence is simply 'uncomfortable' rather than 'unsafe'.

How can passengers reduce the effects they may feel from turbulence?

Henderson says:

Keep your seat belt loosely fastened whenever you’re seated, even if the sign is off

Choose a seat over or just ahead of the wings if you’re particularly nervous, as this is usually the smoothest part of the aircraft

Avoid excessive alcohol if you’re prone to motion sickness

Stay hydrated

Look outside rather than focusing on objects moving around inside the cabin

Remember that turbulence feels dramatic because you’re inside a large, enclosed space, but aircraft are designed to flex. That movement is a sign they’re doing exactly what they’re designed to do

Listen to the cabin crew. They are responding to information from the flight deck, not simply reacting to how the cabin feels.
