Trump slaps 50% tariffs on Canada
The US president has invoked an obscure law never tested in court to impose the new duties
US President Donald Trump has slapped 50% tariffs on a broad range of Canadian imports, citing what he called Ottawa’s “unequal treatment” of American cars, dairy products, and alcohol.
Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs was partly struck down by the US Supreme Court earlier this year. He invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to impose the new duties. The tariffs will take effect in 30 days and apply even to goods covered by the US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement (USMCA), the White House announced on Monday.
The move marks the latest escalation in a trade war that has intensified since Trump’s return to the White House. Washington has already imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, automobiles, and other imports. Ottawa has responded with counter tariffs and other retaliatory measures.
The new duties target a range of consumer and industrial products, including wine, hockey sticks, and cement. Key Canadian exports such as energy, potash, fish, and critical minerals are exempt, according to a White House fact sheet.
Washington argues that Canada unfairly taxes certain US-made vehicles, maintains protectionist barriers on dairy imports, and continues provincial boycotts of American alcoholic beverages. The administration said those measures amount to “discriminatory treatment” of US products.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the move, accusing Washington of violating the USMCA while leaving the door open to negotiations.
“This is the latest in a series of unilateral US trade actions that began with the US imposing a series of tariffs in direct violation” of the trade agreement, Carney said in a statement on Monday. “We stand ready to intensify those discussions in the coming weeks.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged Ottawa to respond in kind. “If these tariffs proceed, Canada should respond tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar,” he wrote on X.
Earlier this month, Trump threatened additional tariffs on Canada, claiming its poor forest management had blanketed parts of the US in wildfire smoke and that Canada should pay for its alleged “willful negligence.”
Announcing the new tariffs, the White House said Canada and China were the only countries to retaliate against the duties imposed last year. It also accused Ottawa of discriminating against US producers.
“Canada has taken US alcohol products off Canadian shelves,” US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said, adding that the new tariffs were intended to “hold Canada accountable for its retaliation and discrimination.”
Ottawa responded to Trump’s trade offensive in 2025 with 25% duties on about C$30 billion ($21.7 billion) worth of US goods. While Mark Carney later rolled some of those back, tariffs on American cars, steel, and aluminum remain in force.
The latest move is part of a sweeping tariff drive launched after Trump’s return to office in January 2025. He has imposed duties on imports from allies and rivals alike, targeting countries including China, Canada and Mexico, as well as steel, aluminum, and automobiles.

"A new and more dangerous version of McCarthyism is back in the United States," Díaz-Canel wrote on X one day after Secretary of State Marco Rubio, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent postured and essentially declared war on the radical left, Marxist groups, and foreign subversion networks.
Well, as a State Department report released on Monday showed, "For more than six decades, the Cuban regime has been the leading sponsor of radical leftism and Third Worldism in the United States."

Former Cuban intelligence agents cited in the State Department report allege that roughly 90% of ICAP personnel are connected to Cuban intelligence operations. So this basically means ICAP functions as the intake valve for the National Network on Cuba (NNOC), a deliberately loose coalition that links 77 left-wing activist organizations, nonprofits, and campaigns while minimizing legal exposure and clear command structures.

"Safeguard Our Homeland": FCC Moves To Ban Foreign Military-Grade Drone Imports
A little more than a week after we exposed military-grade interceptor drones being openly marketed on Facebook as dual-use technology by a Hong Kong-based company, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced a proposal to prohibit the importation and sale of foreign-produced military-grade drones in the U.S.
"Today, the FCC took additional action to safeguard our homeland. We have proposed banning the sale of foreign, military-grade drones, including those capable of swarming," Carr wrote on X, adding, "Another step to strengthening and securing America's drone supply chain."
Carr published a public notice in which the FCC is seeking comments on a proposal to prohibit the continued importation and sale of previously authorized foreign-made military-grade drones and critical components to buyers outside the U.S. government, including systems with swarming capabilities.
The notice stated that these dual-use drones "pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States or the security and safety of United States persons"…

A rural New York school district on the Seneca Nation reservation is set to become one of the first in the United States to place a lifelike humanoid robot in front of high school students.
The full package - robot plus the accompanying Optio AI tutor platform - cost the district $57,590, a discounted figure below the average New York teacher salary and well under the company's listed starting price near $95,000.
"The Realbotix educational robot will never replace teachers, staff members, or meaningful human interaction," the Salamanca City Central School District stated. Instead, they describe it as an instructional tool loaded only with district-approved curriculum, historical information about Salamanca, and content designed to encourage critical thinking rather than simply spit out answers.
The system reportedly operates offline with no internet connection, collects no personally identifiable information, records neither video nor audio, and transmits nothing back to the company. If asked something outside its knowledge base, it is programmed to reply "I don't know."
Realbotix CEO Andrew Kiguel called the deployment "a landmark moment for both AI and humanoid robotics." He added: "We are moving beyond lab demonstrations and pilots to deliver real, embodied AI directly into classrooms, supporting teachers, engaging students, and proving that advanced robotics can thrive in live educational environments. Superintendent Dr. Mark Beehler expressed enthusiasm for giving students "a safe, Salamanca-specific AI tutor" and educators customized tools. The pilot begins with students in the district's Woz ED AI and Robotics pathway - curriculum inspired by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak - and could expand to roughly 500 high school students if deemed successful.
Students will also interact with digital avatars of the robot on laptops for after-hours tutoring, homework help, and support in multiple languages.

Officials stress that the education division operates separately in staff, facilities, and technology, with a planned ownership separation, yet the connection has not gone unnoticed.

Federal, State, Local, and Tribal Law Enforcement Conduct “Operation Black Book” to Take Down Multi-State Cocaine Trafficking Organization as Part of Operation Take Back America
RAPID CITY, SD – United States Attorney Ronald A. Parsons, Jr. announced at a joint press conference held today in Rapid City, South Dakota, that a multi-agency law enforcement operation has resulted in the arrest of 14 individuals located throughout the Pine Ridge Reservation, Rapid City, and Box Elder, South Dakota, as well as in Colorado, as part of Operation Take Back America, with the goal of protecting our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.
Operation Black Book is a federal investigation into a multi-state cocaine trafficking organization responsible for importing kilograms of cocaine into western South Dakota, including to communities within the Pine Ridge Reservation. Through the investigation, law enforcement has thus far seized over 37 firearms, more than $61,000, and approximately five kilograms of cocaine intended for distribution in South Dakota.
The investigation was spearheaded by the FBI Badlands Safe Trails Task Force (FBI Task Force) in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration and IRS-Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI). The South Dakota National Guard Counter Drug Unit, South Dakota Highway Patrol, and Rapid City Police Department also assisted in the investigation. The FBI Task Force is comprised of investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs—Division of Drug Enforcement, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.
The first phase of the operation occurred in Colorado on June 16, 2026, resulting in the arrest of three individuals responsible for supplying the South Dakota drug trafficking organization with cocaine. The second phase of the operation began in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 21, 2026, and continued until the afternoon. By the end of the operation, law enforcement officers arrested 14 targeted fugitives.
The arrestees have all been federally indicted for Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance. Some members of the drug trafficking organization face additional federal charges related to financial crimes and firearms offenses for their conduct in furtherance of the drug trafficking organization. The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be considered. An indictment is merely an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

UK class action lawsuit isn’t costing AstraZeneca anything; it’s costing the taxpayer everything
AstraZeneca is defending itself against a class action lawsuit launched in 2023 involving 51 cases where claimants allege the vaccine caused Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (“TTS”), a rare blood-clotting condition.
“Those taking legal action have been diagnosed with vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia [“VIIT”],” The BMJ said. Lawyers for the claimants argue that VITT is a subset of TTS, although AstraZeneca does not appear to recognise the term.
The number of claimants was initially higher but decreased to 51 after 12 victims pulled out because they had taken the vaccine after 7 April 2021, when AstraZeneca added the risk of blood clots caused by its vaccine to a patient leaflet handed out at vaccination centres.
In April 2024, the company admitted in High Court documents that its vaccine can cause TTS in very rare cases, though it disputes generic causation and denies the product was defective.
Claimants are seeking damages totalling up to £100 million, with the first major case involving patient Jamie Scott.

New Jersey governor admits software glitch registered 6,600 non-citizens to vote and some actually voted.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill admitted a DMV software error registered over 6,600 non-citizens to vote.
The system was erroneously registering people even when they checked “no” on the citizenship question.
Roughly 400 of these non-citizens cast ballots before the error was caught.
All improper registrations have now been removed from the voter rolls.
The issue happened through automatic voter registration linked to motor vehicle transactions.
The governor described it as a software glitch but the scale has triggered widespread outrage and calls for investigation.

Two Men Charged with $52 million COVID-19 Tax Credit Fraud Conspiracy
A California man was arrested yesterday after a grand jury sitting in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania returned an indictment charging him with conspiracy, mail fraud and money laundering.
According to the indictment, Christopher Slater was part of a multi-state conspiracy to defraud the United States of more than $52.7 million by filing hundreds of false tax returns claiming Paid Sick and Family Leave Credit (SFLC) and Employee Retention Credit (ERC) credits. Congress authorized the SFLC tax credit to reimburse businesses for wages paid to employees who were on sick or family leave and could not work because of COVID-19. Congress authorized the ERC to incentivize businesses to keep employees on their payroll during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This indictment alleges that Christopher Slater orchestrated a multi-state fraud scheme that sought more than $50 million in taxpayer-funded pandemic relief funds,” said Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald of the Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division. “This brazen fraud is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The Fraud Division will continue to hold anyone accountable who steals from American taxpayers and abuses programs intended to provide relief during a national crisis.”
Slater allegedly conspired with others to recruit business owners, use their information to file false tax returns and then launder the proceeds of the fraud. In total, Slater allegedly caused at least 290 false tax returns to be filed for 35 businesses claiming over $52.7 million in COVID-19 tax credits, of which the IRS paid out over $32.2 million.
The indictment also charged Mark Keagel, of York, Pennsylvania, with money laundering, conspiracy and theft of government property. Keagel owned two defunct businesses whose information he allegedly passed on to one of Slater’s co-conspirators. According to the indictment, Slater’s associates filed false tax returns on behalf of Keagel’s businesses. In response, the IRS mailed approximately $3.6 million in fraudulent Treasury checks to Keagel, who then allegedly laundered those proceeds.
If convicted, Slater faces a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison for each of the seven mail fraud and mail fraud conspiracy counts. Slater and Keagel also face a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison for each of the money laundering and money laundering conspiracy counts. Keagel faces a sentence of up to ten years in prison for each count of theft of government property.

Attacks in the Strait of Hormuz; Israel kills 57 Palestinians in Gaza in one week; No more elections in Nicaragua, Ortega says
Killed and wounded: Over the past 24 hours, 10 Palestinians were killed, one due to wounds sustained in earlier attacks, and 42 were injured in Israeli attacks across Gaza, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The total recorded death toll since October 7, 2023 has risen to 73,293 killed, with 173,906 injured. Since October 11, the first full day of the so-called ceasefire, Israel has killed at least 1,168 Palestinians in Gaza and wounded 3,798, while 802 bodies have been recovered from under the rubble.
Israel continues escalated assault on Gaza: Israeli attacks on Gaza on Monday killed at least eight Palestinians and wounded more than 20 others.
An Israeli drone struck a civilian vehicle near Al-Ghafri Junction in Gaza City, wounding up to 14 people, including children, according to local reports.
Drop Site correspondent Mohamed Ahmed spoke to eyewitnesses to an attack on a makeshift shelter inside a hospital building, with a man describing its initial stages by noting that “children [were] having fun and playing football, and suddenly they started screaming.” The attack killed four Palestinians and wounded at least 16 others, according to WAFA. In Khan Younis, a separate Israeli drone strike hit a civilian vehicle near the British Hospital in al-Mawasi, killing three Palestinians and wounding others.
Israeli forces killed an entire family of six, including three children, in an overnight strike on a home in Gaza City as families slept. The house, which was engulfed in flames, was reportedly struck at least three times, hampering efforts to rescue survivors.
“From 13 to 20 July alone, our office has recorded that the Israeli military killed at least 57 Palestinians, including six children and eight women,” UN human rights office spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan said Tuesday, addressing Israel’s escalating attacks on Gaza.
Israeli attacks in the occupied West Bank:
Israeli settlers set fire to olive trees in the town of Beit Ilyan, northwest of occupied Jerusalem, as part of a series of attacks on Palestinians on Monday.
Israeli settlers also continued to raid the village of Al-Mughir, northeast of Ramallah, storming homes in the area.
Three Palestinians were injured after settlers attacked a home in the town of Raba, east of Jenin, assaulting a man and two of his sons.
France urges EU to ban imports from illegal Israeli settlements: France is calling on the European Union to halt all imports of products from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Monday.
A European Commission options paper has floated an import licensing system, higher tariffs, and even an outright ban on products from the West Bank, though the bloc remains split over whether and which measures to enact.
France, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, and Ireland have been pushing for the EU to restrict settlement trade, while Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and others oppose EU-wide action. A 2024 International Court of Justice opinion said states must avoid trade that sustains the settlements, which are illegal under international law.

Two Air National Guard commanders fired for ‘loss of confidence’
“When those standards are not met and that trust is broken, we must take appropriate action,” wrote the Wyoming Air National Guard’s top officer about the firings.
The top wing commander in the Wyoming Air National Guard and a senior group commander were fired from their positions July 17 by the unit’s commanding general, state officials said.
Col. Brian Diehl was relieved as the commander of the 153rd Airlift Wing, the state’s only flying wing. Col. Lawrence Sullivan was fired at the same time from command of the 153rd Operations Group, which directly oversees the daily flight operations for the Wyoming Air National Guard.
As is typical in relief announcements across the U.S. military, state officials released a brief statement attributing the firing to a “loss of confidence and trust in their ability to effectively lead and command” with no other details.
Diehl, according to an online resume, spent much of his flying career as an airlift pilot in the Wyoming Air Guard. The wing flies C-130Hs on a wide range of missions, from strategic airlift to firefighting missions in western U.S. states to Antarctic resupply flights. Diehl also had a string of mid-career assignments with Air Force special operations units, including command of an MQ-9A drone squadron, before returning to the Wyoming wing in 2023.
Sullivan took a notably different path to the Cheyenne-based airlift wing. According to a de-listed biography available on an internet archive, Sullivan enlisted in the Army in 1988 and commissioned in 1991 as a helicopter pilot. He transferred to the Air Force in 1998, where he spent close to two decades flying Air Force search and rescue helicopters in the New York Air National Guard. He joined the 153rd in 2024.
The Wyoming Air Guard’s senior officer, Brig. Gen. Barry Deibert, did not specify why the two commanders were relieved, but included a statement that “Air National Guard leaders are held to the highest standards of professional conduct, responsibility and reliability. When those standards are not met and that trust is broken, we must take appropriate action to uphold our core values, ensure command integrity, and restore the high standards of professionalism and accountability that our Airmen, our state and our nation expect of us.”
Senior commanders are frequently relieved of command in every military service and the relief of more than one leader in a chain of command is not particularly unusual. Command reliefs occur for a wide range of reasons that can include on-the-job performance, personal misconduct, or particularly notable failings or mishaps among subordinates.
The 153rd Wing’s primary flying unit is the 187th Airlift Squadron, which flies C-130Hs, and was in both Diehl and Sullivan’s purview in their roles. As the operations group commander, Sullivan also oversaw a flight support squadron, an associated aeromedical evacuation squadron and an air traffic control squadron.
As wing commander, Diehl was the top commander over Sullivan’s ops group and the wing’s maintenance, logistics, security and medical units.
