Last month, Earth dropped to its coldest temperature in 14 years.
Antarctica’s Concordia research station recorded the frigid temperature of –119.4°F (–84.1°C) on July 18.
The remote research station recorded the bone-chilling temperatures twice overnight, at 6:25 am and again at 6:34 am.
These extreme sub-freezing reports are the coldest to be recorded anywhere on Earth since 2012, when temps at Russia’s Vostok Station in East Antarctica reached −119.6°F

Shell sells Dutch solar farms in retreat from renewables

Shell is selling every solar farm it owns in the Netherlands. The five sites, plus a combined wind and solar park at Pottendijk near Emmen, are going to the French oil company TotalEnergies.
The deal covers all of Shell’s wind and solar projects on land across Europe (its offshore wind farms are not included) and the company will not disclose what it is being paid.
The Dutch sites can produce up to 254 megawatts between them, enough to power tens of thousands of homes. They are at Moerdijk, Heerenveen, Emmen, and Sas van Gent and Koegorspolder near Terneuzen.
Some were built on land Shell had already used for oil and gas, and the company used them as proof it was changing. The Emmen farm stands on the site of an old gas treatment plant, part of a project Shell said could be an example for the rest of the country.
The sale needs approval from regulators and is expected to be completed at the end of 2026.
Retreating from transition
Wael Sawan, Shell’s chief executive, has shifted spending back towards oil and gas and away from low-carbon projects. TotalEnergies has moved the other way, buying renewable assets across Europe.
The Hague district court ordered Shell in 2021 to cut its emissions by 45% by 2030. The company dropped Royal Dutch from its name and moved its headquarters to London the following year, and won its appeal in November 2024.
Milieudefensie has taken that case to the Supreme Court and launched a second action last year over the company’s 700 oil and gas projects that are still in development.
Shell is not leaving Dutch renewable energy altogether. It keeps its stakes in North Sea wind farms, its Holland Hydrogen 1 plant at Rotterdam and its carbon capture work.

Wildfire breaks out in Limburg, train services halted

A large wildfire is burning in the Rosmolen nature reserve at Oostrum in northern Limburg, and has stopped trains on the line between Nijmegen and Venray.
The fire broke out at 11.45am. The Limburg-Noord safety region said it had scaled up its response because of the drought and asked people to stay away from the area and leave room for emergency services. Large numbers of crews and vehicles are at the scene.
Fire brigades from several provinces and regions have been sent in, regional broadcaster L1 reported. Crews are trying to stop the fire crossing the nearby railway line.
The blaze is burning in the treetops, which allows it to spread quickly and makes it difficult to put out.
Rail operator NS expects the line between Nijmegen and Venray to stay closed until 6pm.
The Netherlands is in an official water shortage after weeks without significant rain. Last week the fire service called in help from Germany, France and Belgium to tackle wildfires elsewhere in the country.

Doctors want more hospitals to offer late-term abortions

The Dutch association of gynecologist, the NVOG, and the healthcare inspectorate IGJ want more hospitals to carry out late-term abortions – between 22 and 24 weeks – saying access to the care is not currently assured for all women.
Abortion is legal in the Netherlands up to 24 weeks. Terminations up to 22 weeks usually take place in abortion clinics, while those between 22 and 24 weeks are carried out in hospitals, of which only a small number currently do so.
Sanne Gordijn, head of obstetrics at the UMCG in Groningen, one of the few hospitals already providing the care, said some women were travelling to Spain, Britain or parts of theUnited Statesbecause they could not get a termination here.
She told broadcaster NOS that a late abortion is emotionally difficult for staff and never becomes routine, which is why the work needs to be shared out. The risk of medical complications after 22 weeks is why the procedure takes place in hospital.
Amsterdam’s OLVG has said it has been asked to take part but that reports it has already begun doing so are incorrect.
Gordijn said the grounds for a termination are usually a combination of factors, that the pregnant woman’s need comes first, and that no distinction is made between medical and non-medical grounds.
The UMCG said staff and medical social workers discuss the situation with women, including alternatives such as adoption, and that psychological support is available. Just over 39,000 abortions were carried out in the Netherlands in 2024, of which 331 were between 22 and 24 weeks.
Abortion clinics have reported a rise in attacks and intimidation in recent years, and MPs voted last year to bring forward a review of the abortion law, on a motion from NSC and the ChristenUnie.

As you all know(not you) I am a Dutch anon and if I doxx myself with this post it's ok, it's already a mess atm. Anyway I bought 400 DJT's today and I thought it was a good idea to do that for $ 10.07. Sometimes it doesn't go in one time, but this time I looked at it live and thought 'wtf are they doing?! Are they going to do it in 17 times?!'. After it was done I started counting and indeed it was 17 times. It's not normal!
