JPMorgan Pledges $750 Billion to Boost US Homeownership, Housing Supply

The bank aims to help 500,000 customers buy homes and finance 1 million affordable housing units over the next decade.

JPMorgan Chase has pledged to invest $750 billion toward housing through 2035 as part of a broader initiative aimed at expanding homeownership in the United States.

The bank said on Monday that it plans to help 500,000 customers purchase homes, including 200,000 first-time buyers, by increasing its mortgage lending by more than 40 percent.

To support that expansion, JPMorgan said it will hire 850 additional home-lending advisers and develop new financing products for modular and manufactured homes.

The bank also said it intends to help finance 1 million affordable housing units nationwide. Its strategy will include working with state and local governments to streamline zoning and building codes, expand housing tax credits, and encourage public-private partnerships.

JPMorgan has also specifically set aside funding for housing projects in San Francisco. The bank said it is providing nearly $200 million in financing for a 342-unit residential development along the city’s waterfront.

“An affordable and resilient housing market is essential to driving economic growth and increasing opportunity,” Michelle Herrick, JPMorgan’s head of commercial real estate, said in a statement.

The $750 billion pledge represents a 40 percent increase in the amount of capital JPMorgan deployed toward housing over the previous decade, according to the bank.

The housing commitment is part of the bank’s broader American Dream Initiative, which also seeks to support small businesses, expand access to healthcare, and address other economic priorities.

Announced in March, the initiative is backed by JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, who has expressed concern that traditional markers of financial security, including homeownership, are becoming increasingly unattainable for many Americans.

“The American Dream is alive, but it’s slipping out of reach for too many people—and for future generations,” Dimon said in March. “This slows economic growth, hurts communities, and prevents many people from getting ahead.”

The initiative comes as elevated home prices and mortgage rates continue to edge on housing affordability.

The median price of a previously occupied home reached a record $440,660 in June, according to the National Association of Realtors. This marks the 36th consecutive month of year-over-year price increases.

Meanwhile, the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage rose to 6.66 percent for the week ending July 30, according to Freddie Mac, its highest level in a year.

The average rate on a 15-year fixed mortgage, commonly used by homeowners refinancing their loans, increased to 6.04 percent for the same week. The rate stood at 5.85 percent a year earlier.

Shell sells Dutch solar farms in retreat from renewables

August 3, 2026

Shell is selling every solar farm it owns in the Netherlands. The five sites, plus a combined wind and solar park at Pottendijk near Emmen, are going to the French oil company TotalEnergies.

The deal covers all of Shell’s wind and solar projects on land across Europe (its offshore wind farms are not included) and the company will not disclose what it is being paid.

The Dutch sites can produce up to 254 megawatts between them, enough to power tens of thousands of homes. They are at Moerdijk, Heerenveen, Emmen, and Sas van Gent and Koegorspolder near Terneuzen.

Some were built on land Shell had already used for oil and gas, and the company used them as proof it was changing. The Emmen farm stands on the site of an old gas treatment plant, part of a project Shell said could be an example for the rest of the country.

The sale needs approval from regulators and is expected to be completed at the end of 2026.

Retreating from transition

Wael Sawan, Shell’s chief executive, has shifted spending back towards oil and gas and away from low-carbon projects. TotalEnergies has moved the other way, buying renewable assets across Europe.

The Hague district court ordered Shell in 2021 to cut its emissions by 45% by 2030. The company dropped Royal Dutch from its name and moved its headquarters to London the following year, and won its appeal in November 2024.

Milieudefensie has taken that case to the Supreme Court and launched a second action last year over the company’s 700 oil and gas projects that are still in development.

Shell is not leaving Dutch renewable energy altogether. It keeps its stakes in North Sea wind farms, its Holland Hydrogen 1 plant at Rotterdam and its carbon capture work.

A reality television celebrity faces multiple felony charges after police arrested her Sunday in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a juvenile at a Hapeville hotel.

Sidney Favors, who also goes by Sidney Starr, was taken into custody following an incident at the Embassy Suites in the 3400 block of International Boulevard.

Police charged Favors with sodomy, sexual battery against a child under 16 and aggravated child molestation as a result of the investigation.

Wildfire breaks out in Limburg, train services halted

August 3, 2026

A large wildfire is burning in the Rosmolen nature reserve at Oostrum in northern Limburg, and has stopped trains on the line between Nijmegen and Venray.

The fire broke out at 11.45am. The Limburg-Noord safety region said it had scaled up its response because of the drought and asked people to stay away from the area and leave room for emergency services. Large numbers of crews and vehicles are at the scene.

Fire brigades from several provinces and regions have been sent in, regional broadcaster L1 reported. Crews are trying to stop the fire crossing the nearby railway line.

The blaze is burning in the treetops, which allows it to spread quickly and makes it difficult to put out.

Rail operator NS expects the line between Nijmegen and Venray to stay closed until 6pm.

The Netherlands is in an official water shortage after weeks without significant rain. Last week the fire service called in help from Germany, France and Belgium to tackle wildfires elsewhere in the country.

Louisiana AG Announces Investigation Into Fauci

"Fauci lied," Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill wrote on X on Aug. 1. "Louisiana and Missouri deposed Dr. Fauci. At the time, he claimed to not recall many key details of his own actions and now we are discovering contemporaneous records he kept."

President Volodymyr Zelensky has made clear he aims to ramp up diplomatic, economic, and military pressure on Moscow, while acknowledging that a short timeline is ideal but likely very difficult to achieve.

Speaking Monday at a gathering of Ukrainian ambassadors in the capital, Zelensky identified autumn 2026 as the target window. "We will try very hard to make this happen before winter, in the autumn," he said, according to Ukrainian national media.

But he quickly tempered expectations, adding: "We clearly understand who we are dealing with and that Putin hopes to continue dragging out this war."

According to Zelensky, the Kremlin is preparing for a prolonged conflict. "He is preparing mobilization at home and new strikes. We see Russia's true intentions, we are uniting our partners and putting pressure on the aggressor," he said in reference to Putin.

He said this campaign is to include continued reliance on allied military and economic measures, until Moscow has no realistic alternative but to negotiate.

Zelensky pointed to what his government calls "long-range sanctions" - Ukraine's term for strikes on Russian military and industrial infrastructure supporting the war, alongside conventional sanctions imposed by Western governments.

The objective, he said, is to bring all of these tools to "such a level of pressure that Russia is left with no alternative other than peace."

Doctors want more hospitals to offer late-term abortions

The Dutch association of gynecologist, the NVOG, and the healthcare inspectorate IGJ want more hospitals to carry out late-term abortions – between 22 and 24 weeks – saying access to the care is not currently assured for all women.

Abortion is legal in the Netherlands up to 24 weeks. Terminations up to 22 weeks usually take place in abortion clinics, while those between 22 and 24 weeks are carried out in hospitals, of which only a small number currently do so.

Sanne Gordijn, head of obstetrics at the UMCG in Groningen, one of the few hospitals already providing the care, said some women were travelling to Spain, Britain or parts of theUnited Statesbecause they could not get a termination here.

She told broadcaster NOS that a late abortion is emotionally difficult for staff and never becomes routine, which is why the work needs to be shared out. The risk of medical complications after 22 weeks is why the procedure takes place in hospital.

Amsterdam’s OLVG has said it has been asked to take part but that reports it has already begun doing so are incorrect.

Gordijn said the grounds for a termination are usually a combination of factors, that the pregnant woman’s need comes first, and that no distinction is made between medical and non-medical grounds.

The UMCG said staff and medical social workers discuss the situation with women, including alternatives such as adoption, and that psychological support is available. Just over 39,000 abortions were carried out in the Netherlands in 2024, of which 331 were between 22 and 24 weeks.

Abortion clinics have reported a rise in attacks and intimidation in recent years, and MPs voted last year to bring forward a review of the abortion law, on a motion from NSC and the ChristenUnie.

Poland has appealed a Belgian court ruling ordering it to pay for millions of Covid-19 vaccine doses it declined to accept under a controversial EU vaccine purchase deal.

The case stems from multibillion-euro contracts for Covid shots negotiated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen with manufacturers Pfizer and BioNTech during the pandemic. The agreements later became the focus of the so-called ‘Pfizergate’ scandal.

In a statement released on Monday, the Polish Health Ministry said the government had appealed the judgment and requested that its enforcement be suspended pending the court’s review. It argued that the lower court had failed to consider all the “relevant factual and legal circumstances” but did not disclose further details.

Pfizer sued Poland in 2023 after Warsaw stopped accepting deliveries, arguing that falling demand, an oversupply of vaccines and the economic impact of the Ukraine conflict amounted to force majeure. In April, the Brussels court ruled that Warsaw must accept roughly 64 million doses and pay about €1.3 billion ($1.5 billion), in addition to interest and legal costs.

Pfizer defended the ruling, telling Politico it reflected “the importance of the contractual obligations that underpinned a successful European pandemic response” and that the company had shown “significant flexibility” toward member states before pursuing legal enforcement.

Von der Leyen has faced scrutiny over her role in the vaccine deals, with opponents accusing her of concealing details of negotiations with Pfizer and AstraZeneca. She has come under particular criticism for refusing to disclose or preserve text messages she reportedly exchanged with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla during the talks. The controversy prompted a no-confidence motion in the European Parliament last year, which she survived.
