‘Our spark has gone’: The marriages ruined by Ozempic. 1/2

Emily* realised her marriage was over the day she was propositioned by a younger male colleague. They had happily worked side by side for years, but she never assumed a man like Julian* – tall, handsome and in his late 20s – would find her attractive.

Six months on Wegovy, a weight-loss jab, changed that.Emily, 35, felt herself being looked at by the opposite sex for the first time in years.

According to research from academics in Sweden, Emily's case is far from unique.In fact, people who undergo rapid weight loss are twice as likely to divorce as the general population. Although the study – which came out earlier this year – focused on people who had been fitted with gastric bands, the lead researcher believesthat the rise of GLP-1s will trigger an even larger divorce trend.

"Very similar mechanisms could occur with Ozempic as with surgery, with regards to changes in relationships," says Professor Per-Arne Svensson, from the University of Gothenburg. "People who embark on the weight-loss journey usually have a lot of other life changes as well. That means that they are probably becoming more social andtrying to live a healthier life. If the partner is not really on the train there, and if they don't follow this person along in this change, that might be something that causes tension."

Emily was initially surprised when she felt Julian gently massage her lower back during after-work drinks. "But I found it really hot, and even though I went home shortly afterwards,

I couldn't get the thought out of my head thatI had felt completely dead from a sexual perspective for a very long time," she recalls.

Later that night, as she watched her husband, John*, get undressed for bed, Emily realised the spark had completely gone from their marriage. She no longer had any urge to sleep with him.

While the era of weight-loss drugs has been heralded as a boon for people who have struggled to have sexual relationships for confidence, less research has been done into themarriages that have been damaged by one person changing their body shape, their attitude to food, and sometimes, their entire personality.

"It could also be that you have a person who is stuck in a bad relationship," adds Professor Svensson, "but doesn't have the self-confidence to break it off because they worry about who would date them, if not their current spouse."

Emily and John got married when they were in their early 30s,and both put on a significant amount of weight in the first few years of their relationship. While Emily was keen to try injectable GLP-1s once they arrived in the UK,John was resistant. Over time, she found herself blossoming. She was delighted to buy new clothes, go out with friends and exercise for the first time in years. Her husband, by contrast, reminded her of the rut she had been in.

"We never had sex," says Emily. "I suspect it was because we found ourselves unattractive, and with time, it became a habit to never touch each other in a sexual way. For a long time, I told myselfit didn't matter because we were good companions, but once my perspective changed, I realised that wasn't true."

Emily's divorce was made easier by the factthat the couple chose not to have children. But for Fiona*, 39, who has three young sons, the prospect of separation is out of the question. Still, she worries that her marriage is no longer as healthy as it was, ironically,because her husband is himself far healthier.

Luke* started taking Ozempic six months ago. He began putting on weight around the birth of their first son. While Fiona stayed trim throughout the baby-making years, he gained about 15kg (2.4st) in total. She supported Luke when he decided to try GLP-1s, but she never expected him to undergo an entire personality change while he was on them.

At first, she was mostly bothered by the obvious differences from their former lives.The couple loved good food and sharing a bottle of wine on weekends, and Fiona missed having a partner with an interest in those things.

Their marriage also felt increasingly unfair. Before Luke began taking medication, Fiona would deal with the boys' bedtimes while he would cook dinner and clean the house. Now, she comes downstairs to an empty kitchen and a husband mutely watching television with a tonic water.

More concerning is his sudden apathy for life. "Luke was one of those people who was up for anything," she says. "If I suggested a last-minute trip away, he'd always tell me to just book it because life is too short not to try new experiences – but that side of him has vanished.It's like the sparkle has gone out of his eyes, and I find I really miss my funny, teddy bear of a husband, even if he was a bit overweight."

Giles Yeo, a biologist, believes that while the physical changes that accompany weight-loss drugs are well-documented,research has paid less attention to the mental shift that can also occur. " [Weight-loss drugs] make you feel full," he says, "but whatwe don't focus on as much is the way they also raise the hurdle for what you need to eat to feel good, and how these hurdles can be raised for other things too. Food is one of the greatest pleasures of life, and if GLP-1 drugs ultimately dampen that pleasure for you,then they will probably dampen the pleasuresfor many other things too, making so much of what was once desirable feel uninteresting."

Within a few months of taking GLP1-s, Nick, 55, noticed that his wife, Caro, had lost many of the habits that made her who she was– the nightly glass of wine, the anxious nail-biting and the late-night online shopping – but also the delicious meals, the raucous parties in the garden and the general zest for life that had always drawn him to her.

"The best way I can describe it is thatshe became emotionally flat," says Nick. "We also always had a pretty good sex life for middle-aged people with kids, but she just lost interest in that. Even though she blamed it on menopause,I'm pretty sure it was the weight-loss drugs."

Studies have linked GLP-1s to anincreased risk of erectile dysfunction for men, and while the picture for women is more complicated, a2025 clinical review argued that libido can decrease for both gendersbecause the same reward pathways that drive eating also drive sexual motivation. Interestingly, this is often masked by the confidence boost of weight loss, which tends to increase sexual availability even when the underlying desire has dropped.

Unlike Nick, Robin, 47, found his wife, Jess, became far more extrovertedwhen she went on GLP1-s. After largely working from home and dedicating herself to her husband and children, Jess became almost euphoric in the first few months after losing weight. She bought herself an entirely new wardrobe, made a new set of friends and went into the office at least three days a week.

Robin felt jealous for the first time in his marriage, and – unsure if it was because he felt rejected by a woman who had always seemed delighted to put her feet up on the sofa with her husband, or because his wife now looked so different to how she had before – he found himself secretly checking her phone when she was asleep.

Soon, he discovered Jess was meeting male colleagues and old male friends from university for drinks, and while he never found out anything hugely incriminating, he worries that the trust they had built over the past 20 yearshad been damaged.

"Mostly, I feel really sad," he says. "I never would have thought that a weekly injection that I have no control over her taking would have such an impact on my marriage – and my life.I just hope that one day soon she decides to go off them."

Economic growth was weaker than expected in the second quarterthough underlying drivers were mostly solid. At the same time,inflation in June held well above the Federal Reserve’s goaland complicated the central bank’s policy path, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.

Gross domestic product, a broad measure of goods and services, increased just 1.5%for the April-through June period, according to Bureau of Economic Analysis numbers adjusted for seasonality and inflation.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for a growth rate of 1.8%, following the 2.1% increase in the first quarter.

A separate report showed that the personal consumption expenditures price index, which is the Federal Reserve’s primary forecasting gauge,fell a seasonally adjusted 0.1% for the month, putting the annual inflation rate at 3.7%. The readings were in line with forecasts.

Excluding food and energy, core PCE posted a monthly increase of 0.1% and an annual level of 3.3%, against respective forecasts for 0.2% and 3.3%.

While the Fed technically uses the headline PCE number as its gauge for setting policy,most officials consider core inflation as a better indicator of longer-run trends.

Stock market futures were positive following the report while Treasury yields were sharply higher.

The reports come a day after adivided Fed voted 9-3 to hold its benchmark borrowing rate in a range between 3.5%-3.75%, where it has been all year.

Inflation has taken the primary focus for Fed policymakers as labor market indicators have stabilized this year, with the three dissenting votes coming from regional presidents who have expressed concerns about higher prices and the failure to make progress toward the prices side of the central bank’s mandate.

GDP: Better than the headline

While the GDP number was below expectations,the miss appeared to come from a decline in federal government spending and inventories. Other parts of the economy appeared strong.

Key areas of the economy continued to show improvement:Personal spending rose 2.1% after eking out a 0.4% gain in the first quarter, while a key indicator of underlying demand called final sales to private domestic purchasers posted a robust 3.9% increase.

However, inventories fell 0.7% and federal spending was off 0.3%, subtracting from the top-line reading.

Gross private domestic investment rose 0.5% while exports also increased 0.5% and imports declined 1.5%. Exports generally add to GDP while imports subtract.

Inflation: About as expected, but still too high

On the inflation readings, the figures were close to expected though still well above the Fed’s 2% target.

Inflation numbers had been easing heading into 2026 but accelerated after the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran in late February, setting off a surge in energy prices that Fed officials worry will bleed over into the broader economy.

Energy goods and services prices tumbled by 5.9% in June, helped by a temporary ease in the Middle East fighting that sent gasoline down 9.2%. Housing inflation also moderated, rising just 0.2%. Goods prices overall declined by 0.6% while services increased just 0.1%.

On a quarterly basis, the PCE index surged 5.1% on headline and 3.4% for core.

Spending held up for the month, with personal expenditures rising 0.3%, in line with expectations. Personal income was up 0.2%, which was below the 0.3% estimate.

However, consumers dipped into their savings to make ends meet. The personal savings rate declined to 2.7%, the lowest in four years.

The Satanic Hazing Rituals of the IDF

There was a massive mutiny in Sde Teiman as soldiers rebelled against the removal of satanic symbols related to their hazing practices. Here is what this tells us about the IDF and Israeli society.

A large number of IDF soldiers in the infamous Sde Teiman camp, known for torturing detainees, stormed out of the base today, and many refused to return. Why? Were they protesting torture? As if. They were protesting that signs signaling their sadistic hazing rituals, carrying seemingly satanic imagery, had been torn down. That led to the largest act of insubordination in recent IDF history.

Here is what this means.

A Tradition of Cruelty and Sadism

This isn’t new. Back in August 2018, a fresh recruit to the Maglan commando unit, named Ili Hayut, jumped out of a Humvee and was never the same. It was just ten days into his service at Maglan. At the end of the camouflage training, the commanders announced the traditional ritual: gather thorn branches and place them in a massive pile and then jump onto them from a vehicle. He broke a vertebra in his neck and was left paralyzed.

This tradition is not in the training manuals or in any brochure. But it is part of the IDF way of life.

He remembers waiting after that in agony for an evacuation that did not come. The hospital was just seventeen minutes away. But it took two hours and ten minutes. They dropped him off the stretcher. He had to ask the ambulance crew to turn on the siren.

The jump was filmed. When his parents asked for the commander’s phone, the segment was gone. A laboratory told the family it had been deleted in a way that could not be recovered.

What about the investigation? There wasn’t one for a year and a half, until the Military Police opened the investigation. In March 2021 the Military Advocate General closed the case with no criminal charges. Because of course it did. Officers received reprimands and had their promotions delayed by a year or two.

The Maglan commander spoke to Ili at his bedside. He told him, it was “a tradition of many years in the unit. And a tradition that is, let’s put it this way, idiotic.” That is one way to put it.

A commission was formed to look into it and its head promised Hayut he would investigate how widespread the practice was in other units. Of course, nothing happened. Hayut, said:

“I wasn’t surprised that it wasn’t done, because the cover-up culture was here from the start. I only want to prevent the next case.”

US Intel Chiefs Back Trump's Claim China Interfered In American Elections

The heads of four U.S. intelligence and national security agencies have backed key elements of President Donald Trump’s claim that China engaged in election interference by targeting American voter-registration data.

A fact sheet released July 30 by the White House Government Transparency Task Force says China and its proxies bought, stole, or hacked voter data belonging to as many as 220 million Americans, including some information that was not publicly available.

The fact sheet pairs that finding with the intelligence community’s official definition of election interference, which includes a foreign power’s targeting of voter data.

It notes that, for a foreign country’s actions to amount to “election interference,” they do not have to change the actual results.

“That definition includes a foreign power’s targeting of voter registration infrastructure or data,” the task force states, citing declassified documents produced by the U.S. intelligence community.

The fact sheet was approved by the heads of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the Department of Homeland Security, according to the White House.

Representatives from those agencies—as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation—also coordinated with the White House before Trump’s July 16 address and “approved the factual statements” drawn from intelligence documents used in the speech, the task force states.

Election Interference Defined

In his speech, Trump said China has long been meddling in U.S. elections, including that it was “working to influence” the results of the 2020 presidential election, in which President Joe Biden was ultimately declared the winner.

Trump did not explicitly claim that China managed to change the 2020 result, and neither did the heads of U.S. intelligence agencies.

The spy chiefs did say in the fact sheet that voter-registration data is itself part of election infrastructure and could be manipulated in ways that affect election results, for instance by preventing groups of voters from casting their ballots.

“Adversaries could alter data to potentially prevent individual voters or groups of voters from voting, causing delays on election day or forcing voters to use provisional ballots,” the task force states, citing intelligence community documents.
